BACKGROUND: If alcohol consumption mitigates psychological and physiological aspects of the response to stressors, then alcohol consumption might be elevated for individuals exposed to high occupational stressors. Frequency of work stressors and reaction to those stressors were studied in relation to several alcohol-related outcomes. METHODS: During the period 1993-1995, 1979 transit operators underwent medical examinations for commercial driver's license renewal. Questionnaire and interview data concerning occupational stress factors and alcohol-related outcomes were available for 1386 (70.2%) of the operators. RESULTS: A positive association was found between the two job stressor-related measures and each of six alcohol-related outcomes. Of these 12 associations, ten were statistically significant. Individuals experiencing high self-reported frequency of job stressors and a higher perceived severity of those job stressors were more likely to drink and more likely to be heavy drinkers. They reported more consequences of alcohol consumption, reported increased consumption since beginning work as transit drivers, and were more likely to report drinking to deal with work stress. They also drank more, but this effect was not significant for either job stress measure. There was virtually no association between either stressor-related measure and alcohol dependency (CAGE). CONCLUSIONS: Together with other published findings, these results suggest increased alcohol-related outcomes in the presence of work stressors. This conclusion has potential implications for worksite health promotion and job design. Because our findings are cross-sectional, further research is needed to clarify the causal nature of the work stressor-alcohol association. Further research also is needed to clarify the role of individual differences and context.  相似文献

AIM: To find out how the frequency of drinking one to two drinks, three to four drinks and five or more drinks of alcohol per drinking occasion predicts injury mortality in 16 years of follow-up among the Finnish 15-69-year-old male population. DESIGN: Three alcohol surveys conducted in 1969, 1976 and 1984 were pooled and linked with mortality information from the national cause of death register. METHOD: Cox proportional hazard models were used for analysing the survival time data. FINDINGS: Drinking at the level of one to two drinks, regardless of frequency, did not elevate the risk of fatal injury, nor did drinking at the level of three to four drinks. Drinking five or more drinks at a time significantly increased the risk of fatal injury in graded relation, compared with those who never drank at that level. The risk was highest for those who drank five or more drinks at a time at least weekly (RR = 5.78, 95% CI = 2.80-11.94), when adjusted for possible confounders. CONCLUSIONS: We found that besides the total volume of consumption, a drinking pattern that involves drinking occasions when consumption exceeds four drinks of alcohol at a time leads to a significant increase in the risk of fatal injury among Finnish men. The risk is highest among those who have the highest annual number of heavy drinking occasions. The finding does not support the hypothesis that alcohol tolerance would lower the risk of fatal injuries among frequent heavy drinkers.  相似文献

Alcohol consumption is associated with decreased antiretroviral adherence, and decreased adherence results in poorer outcomes. However the magnitude of alcohol's impact on survival is unknown. Our objective was to use a calibrated and validated simulation of HIV disease to estimate the impact of alcohol on survival. We incorporated clinical data describing the temporal and dose-response relationships between alcohol consumption and adherence in a large observational cohort (N=2,702). Individuals were categorized as nondrinkers (no alcohol consumption), hazardous drinkers (consume > or =5 standard drinks on drinking days), and nonhazardous drinkers (consume <5 standard drinks on drinking days). Our results showed that nonhazardous alcohol consumption decreased survival by more than 1 year if the frequency of consumption was once per week or greater, and by 3.3 years (from 21.7 years to 18.4 years) with daily consumption. Hazardous alcohol consumption decreased overall survival by more than 3 years if frequency of consumption was once per week or greater, and by 6.4 years (From 16.1 years to 9.7 years) with daily consumption. Our results suggest that alcohol is an underappreciated yet modifiable risk factor for poor survival among individuals with HIV.  相似文献

Health care personnel who have been infected on the job with HIV have had a difficult time collecting benefits from workers' compensation programs. Under the exclusive remedy provision of the current workers' compensation law, employees cannot sue their employers to recoup damages for occupational illness or injury. However, they can receive benefits for the same occupational disability under State law. Patti Miller Tereskerz, of the Health Care Worker Safety Research and Resource Center in Virginia, concludes that the exclusive remedy provision, which protects employers from liability, discourages employers from creating a safer work environment. Representative Pete Stark (D-CA) proposed the Health Care Worker Protection Act of 1997 requiring hospitals to adhere to certain safety standards or risk losing Medicare funding. If this Act becomes law, it would address most of the grievances and causes for present workers' compensation claims and employer responsibility.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: First, to test whether current injury is more closely related to acute intake than to usual consumption patterns, and second, to test whether repeated injury is more closely related to general consumption patterns than to acute intake. METHODS: Screening of alcohol consumption of 7,872 patients enrolling between January 1, 2003 and June 30, 2004 in an emergency department (ED) in Lausanne, Switzerland. General consumption patterns were measured as usual volume (in drinks per week) and binge drinking (5+ drinks for men; 4+ drinks for women) at least once monthly. Acute intake was measured through number of drinks in the 24-hour period prior to attending the ED. Separate logistic regression models of current injury and repeated injury on alcohol consumption patterns were estimated. RESULTS: Acute intake and binge drinking dominated the association with current injury, while general consumption patterns were predictive of repeated alcohol-related injury. CONCLUSIONS: Acute intake is associated with current injury in a dose-response relationship and with binge drinking. Because acute intake can be found among moderate volume drinkers as well as among chronic heavy drinkers, for current injury usual volume adds little predictive value over the effects of acute intake. Repeated injuries occur more often among chronic heavy drinkers, and thus general consumption patterns are more closely associated with injury "recidivism" than with acute intake. A screening question assessing prior injury may be a useful tool in the ED for distinguishing between chronic heavy drinkers and usually moderate drinkers with heavy drinking episodes, and thus prove helpful when creating preventive efforts tailored to different types of drinker.  相似文献

Aims   The aim of this study was to identify changes in patterns of alcohol consumption over a 20-year interval among older women and men, and to examine the associations between guideline-defined excessive drinking and late-life drinking problems.
Design, participants and measures   A community sample of 719 adults between 55 and 65 years of age who consumed alcohol at or prior to baseline participated in a survey of alcohol consumption and drinking problems and was followed 10 years and 20 years later.
Findings   The likelihood of excessive drinking declined over the 20-year interval as adults matured into their 70s and 80s. However, at ages 75–85, 27.1% of women and 48.6% of men consumed more than two drinks per day or seven drinks per week. At comparable guideline levels of alcohol consumption, older men were more likely to have drinking problems than were older women. Consumption of more than two drinks per day or seven drinks per week was identified as a potential conservative guideline for identifying excessive drinking associated with an elevated likelihood of drinking problems.
Conclusions   A substantial percentage of older adults who consume alcohol engage in guideline-defined excessive drinking and incur drinking problems. The finding that older men may be more likely than older women to experience problems when they drink beyond guideline levels suggests that alcohol guidelines for men should not be set higher than those for women.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To assess the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between alcohol consumption and risk of falls in older adults. DESIGN: Cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses. SETTING: Four U.S. communities. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 5,841 older adults enrolled in the Cardiovascular Health Study, an ongoing, population-based, prospective cohort study, participated. MEASUREMENTS: Self-reported alcohol consumption at baseline, self-reported frequent falls at baseline, and the 4-year risk of falls of participants who denied frequent falls at baseline. RESULTS: Cross-sectional analysis indicated an apparent inverse association between alcohol consumption and risk of frequent falls (adjusted odds ratio in consumers of 14 or more drinks per week=0.41; 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.14-1.17; P for trend=.06), but longitudinal analysis indicated a similar 4-year risk of falls in abstainers and light to moderate drinkers but a 25% higher risk in consumers of 14 or more drinks per week (95% CI=3-52%; P for trend=.07). Similar results were found in analyses stratified by age, sex, race, and physical activity. CONCLUSION: Consumption of 14 or more drinks per week is associated with an increased risk of subsequent falls in older adults. Cross-sectional studies may fail to identify this risk of heavier drinking, perhaps because older adults at risk for falls decrease their alcohol use over time or because heavier drinkers at risk for falls tend not to enroll in cohort studies. However, because this study relied upon annual reporting of falls, further prospective studies should be conducted to confirm these findings.  相似文献

AIM: To compare alternative survey methods for estimating (a) levels of at risk alcohol consumption and (b) total volume of alcohol consumed per capita in comparison with estimates from sales data and to investigate reasons for under-reporting. SETTING: The homes of respondents who were eligible and willing to participate. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 21,674 Australians aged 14 years and older. DESIGN: A 2001 national household survey of drug use, experiences and attitudes with weights applied for age, sex, geographic location and day of week of interview. MEASURES: Self-completion questionnaire using quantity-frequency (QF) and graduated-frequency (GF) methods plus two questions about consumption 'yesterday': one in standard drinks, another with empirically based estimates of drink size and strength. RESULTS: The highest estimate of age 14 + per capita consumption of 7.00 l of alcohol derived from recall of consumption 'yesterday' or 76.8% of the official estimate. The lowest was QF with 49.8%. When amount consumed 'yesterday' was recalled in standard drinks this estimate was 5.27 l. GF questions yielded higher estimates than did QF questions both for total volume (5.25 versus 4.54 l) and also for the proportion of the population at risk of long-term alcohol-related harm (10.6%versus 8.1%). With the detailed 'yesterday' method 61% of all consumption was on high risk drinking days. CONCLUSIONS: Questions about typical quantities of alcohol consumed can lead to underestimates, as do questions about drinking 'standard drinks' of alcohol. Recent recall methods encourage fuller reporting of volumes plus more accurate estimates of unrecorded consumption and the proportion of total alcohol consumption that places drinkers at risk of harm. However, they do not capture longer-term drinking patterns. It is recommended that both recent recall and measures of longer-term drinking patterns are included in national surveys.  相似文献

Background: Facial flushing responses to drinking, because of intolerance to alcohol, are observed in some people, especially Asians. This study examined the role of flushing responses in the relationship between alcohol consumption and insulin resistance (IR). Methods: Participants in this cross‐sectional analysis included 624 Korean men (80 nondrinkers, 306 nonflushing drinkers, and 238 flushing drinkers) who were free of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Data on the flushing response to drinking and alcohol consumption were collected from medical records. IR was estimated using the Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMAIR). On the basis of comparisons with nondrinkers, the risk of IR according to the quantity of alcohol consumed per week was analyzed among nonflushers and flushers. Results: After adjusting for age, exercise status, smoking status, BMI, waist circumference, blood pressure, high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides using a logistic regression model, we found a low risk of IR among nonflushers who consumed ≤4 drinks (1 drink = 14 g of alcohol) per week (OR = 0.3). In contrast, a higher risk of IR was associated with nonflushers who consumed >20 drinks per week (OR = 3.5). On the other hand, only a higher risk of IR was associated with flushers who consumed >12 drinks per week (>12 to 20 drinks: OR = 4.7; >20 drinks: OR = 3.5). Conclusions: The amount of drinking associated with the development of IR in flushers was lower than in nonflushers. Additionally, no positive effect of moderate drinking on IR was observed in flushers. The findings support acetaldehyde‐derived mechanisms in the development of alcohol‐related IR.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the effect of involuntary job loss on subsequent alcohol consumption by older workers in the United States. METHODS: Using longitudinal data from the 1992 and 1994 waves of the Health and Retirement Survey, the authors estimated multivariate models to assess the impact of involuntary job loss on subsequent alcohol use. Two outcomes were investigated: reported daily alcohol consumption and onset of drinking. The analysis sample included 207 workers who experienced involuntary job loss between survey dates and a comparison group of 2,866 continuously employed workers. RESULTS: After baseline alcohol consumption and a variety of socioeconomic and illness-related covariates were controlled, involuntary job loss was not associated (p>.05) with number of daily drinks consumed at follow-up. However, among those who did not consume alcohol at baseline, individuals who suffered involuntary job loss were twice as likely as continuously employed individuals to start drinking by follow-up (OR = 2.01; CI = 1.06-3.80). The majority of those who began drinking at follow-up reported drinking less than 1 drink per day. DISCUSSION: The findings provide evidence of a significant relationship between job loss and subsequent alcohol use among baseline nondrinkers. However, the magnitude of the changes in drinking was quite modest.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the association between alcohol consumption and incident congestive heart failure (CHF) both overall and after adjusting for incident myocardial infarction (MI). BACKGROUND: Moderate alcohol consumption has been associated with lower risk of CHF and MI. METHODS: The Cardiovascular Health study, a prospective cohort study of cardiovascular disease risk factors and outcomes, followed 5,888 subjects > or =65 years old for 7 to 10 years. Cox models were used to estimate the adjusted risk of CHF by reported alcohol consumption. RESULTS: There were 5,595 subjects at baseline at risk for incident CHF with alcohol data and 1,056 events during follow-up. Compared with abstainers, the adjusted risk of CHF was lower among subjects who reported consuming 1 to 6 drinks per week (hazard ratio [HR] 0.82, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.67 to 1.00, p = 0.05) and 7 to 13 drinks per week (HR 0.66, 95% CI 0.47 to 0.91, p = 0.01). Time-dependent adjustment for incident MI altered only slightly the association between moderate alcohol consumption and CHF (for 1 to 6 drinks per week, HR 0.84, 95% CI 0.65 to 1.04; for 7 to 13 drinks per week, HR 0.69, 95% CI 0.49 to 0.99). Baseline former drinkers had a higher risk of CHF than abstainers (HR 1.51, p < 0.01), but those who quit during the study did not have a higher risk (HR 0.83, 95% CI 0.66 to 1.03). CONCLUSIONS: Moderate alcohol use is associated with a lower risk of incident CHF among older adults, even after accounting for incident MI and other factors.  相似文献

Drinking and Reproductive Dysfunction among Women in a 1981 National Survey   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
This paper presents the first data available on drinking and reproductive dysfunction from a representative national sample of women. In this stratified household sample of 917 women (weighted n = 2552), dysmenorrhea, heavy menstrual flow, and premenstrual discomfort increased with drinking level and were particularly strongly associated with reported consumption of 6 or more drinks a day at least once a week. Women who consumed 6 or more drinks/day at least 5 times a week had elevated rates of gynecologic surgery other than hysterectomy, but hysterectomy was less common among women averaging 2 oz or more of ethanol/day, with age effects controlled. Lifetime rates of obstetric disorders showed significant elevations at upper levels of drinking (6 or more drinks/day at least 3 times a week for miscarriage or stillbirth and prematurity, and 6 or more drinks/day at least 5 times a week for infertility and birth defects). An unexpected finding was the high rates of menstrual disorders, hysterectomy, miscarriage or stillbirth, and prematurity among temporary abstainers (women reporting alcohol consumption in the past 12 months but not the past 30 days) who had previously drunk only infrequently.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between (1) two thresholds of excessive alcohol drinking, (2) binge drinking, and (3) impairments in functional status in older drinkers. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Ten internal medicine practices affiliated with an academic medical center. PARTICIPANTS: One hundred sixty-one persons aged 60 and older who reported drinking one or more drinks in the previous 3 months. MEASUREMENTS: Two commonly used thresholds of excessive drinking: (1) eight to 14 drinks per week for women and men (lower threshold) and (2) more than 14 drinks per week for women and men (higher threshold); a measure of binge drinking (> or =3 drinks per occasion for women or > or =4 drinks per occasion for men); and self-reported instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) and advanced activities of daily living (AADLs). RESULTS: Compared with older persons consuming seven or fewer drinks per week, those exceeding the higher threshold of excessive drinking were more likely to have impairments in IADLs (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 8.4) and, to a lesser extent, AADLs (AOR = 3.7); those exceeding the lower threshold were more likely to have impairments in IADLs (AOR 5 6.0) but not in AADLs (AOR = 1.7). Binge drinkers were also more likely to have impairments in IADLs (AOR = 3.0) but not in AADLs (AOR = 1.5). CONCLUSIONS: In this group of older men and women, drinking more than seven drinks per week was associated with impairments in IADLs and, to a lesser extent, AADLs. Drinking more than three drinks per occasion was associated with impairments in IADLs.  相似文献

The relationship between blood pressure and alcohol intake was examined in 2434 male and 1608 female London civil servants. These subjects had been selected from 24,000 office workers on the basis of responses to a health questionnaire. The men had an average blood pressure of 134/80 mmHg and consumed a mean of 62 g alcohol/week as beer, 28 g/week as wine or fortified wine and 18 g/week as spirits (a total of 11.8 drinks/week). The women had an average blood pressure of 133/79 mmHg and consumed 7 g alcohol/week as beer, 25 g/week as wine and 11 g/week as spirits (a total of 4.4 drinks/week). Twenty-five per cent of men and 24% of women had a casual diastolic pressure equal to or greater than 90 mmHg and were considered to have diastolic hypertension on the one occasion. There was no increase in either systolic or diastolic pressure in men until total alcohol intake exceeded 50 drinks/week. However, 1% of all men had hypertension associated with drinking alcohol and in those with hypertension, alcohol may have been the cause in between 4 and 9%. Defining 'hypertension' as a diastolic blood pressure of 90 mmHg or above on one occasion, 12-14% of people drinking more than 50 drinks of alcohol per week had hypertension associated with this intake of alcohol, and similarly, of those with both 'hypertension' and this level of intake, 36% could attribute their high blood pressure to their alcohol consumption.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Background: Binge drinking accounts for more than half of the 79,000 annual deaths in the United States that are owing to excessive drinking. The overall objective of our study was to examine the prevalence of binge drinking and consumption levels associated with suboptimal self‐rated health among the general population of adult drinkers in all 50 states and territories in the United States. Methods: The study included a total of 200,587 current drinkers who participated in the 2008 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey. We estimated the prevalence of binge drinking (i.e., ≥5 drinks on 1 occasion for men or ≥4 drinks on 1 occasion for women) and heavy drinking (i.e., an average of >14 drinks per week for men or >7 drinks per week for women), as well as the average number of binge episodes per person during a 30‐day period. Odds ratios were produced with multivariate logistic regression models using binge‐drinking levels as a predictor; status of suboptimal self‐rated health was used as an outcome variable while controlling for sociodemographic, health, and behavioral risk factors. Results: We estimate that 34.7 million adult drinkers in the United States engaged in binge drinking in 2008, including an estimated 42.2% who reported either heavy drinking or at least 4 binge‐drinking episodes in a 30‐day period. Binge drinking with such levels was associated with a 13–23% increased likelihood of reporting suboptimal self‐rated health, when compared to the nonbinge drinkers. Conclusions: Binge drinking continues to be a serious public health concern. Frequent binge drinkers or binge drinkers who consume alcohol heavily are especially at risk of suboptimal self‐rated health. Our findings underscore the importance of broad‐based implementation in health care settings of screening for and brief interventions to address alcohol misuse, as well as the continuing need to implement effective population‐based prevention strategies to reduce alcohol‐related morbidity and mortality.  相似文献

Background: While the validity of self‐reported consumption based on blood alcohol concentration (BAC) has been found to be high in emergency room (ER) samples, little research exists on the estimated number of drinks consumed given a BAC level. Such data would be useful in establishing a dose–response relationship between drinking and risk (e.g., of injury) in those studies for which the number of drinks consumed is not available but BAC is. Methods: Several methods were used to estimate the number of drinks consumed in the 6 hours prior to injury based on BAC obtained at the time of ER admission of n = 1,953 patients who self‐reported any drinking 6 hours prior to their injury and who arrived to the ER within 6 hours of the event, from the merged Emergency Room Collaborative Alcohol Analysis Project (ERCAAP) and the World Health Organization Collaborative Study on Alcohol and Injury across 16 countries. Results: The relationship between self‐reported consumption and averaged BAC within each consumption level appeared to be fairly linear up to about 7 drinks and a BAC of approximately 100 mg/dl. Above about 7 reported drinks, BAC appeared to have no relationship with drinking, possibly representing longer consumption periods than only the 6 hours before injury for those reporting higher quantities consumed. Both the volume estimate from the bivariate BAC to self‐report relationship as well as from a Widmark calculation using BAC and time from last drink to arrival to the ER indicated a somewhat weak relationship to actual number of self‐reported drinks. Conclusions: Future studies may benefit from investigating the factors suspected to be driving the weak relationships between these measures, including the actual time over which the reported alcohol was consumed and pattern of drinking over the consumption period.  相似文献

Inflammation and genetic susceptibility influence the risk of lung cancer. Previous studies suggest that the inflammatory response may depend upon ABO phenotype. The hypothesis that the association with lung cancer mortality risk of lifestyle and occupational factors previously linked to inflammation would depend upon ABO phenotype was tested in a long-term follow-up of 3,346 male subjects aged 53-74 yrs. During a 16-yr period, 170 (5.1%) of the male subjects died due to lung cancer; 84 (5.9%) of phenotype O, 70 (4.9%) of phenotype A and 16 (3.2%) of phenotype B/AB. In addition to cumulative tobacco consumption, high salt intake long-term occupational dust exposure, high fat intake and consumption of alcohol were significantly predictive of lung cancer mortality for phenotype O subjects. After multivariable adjustment, the hazard ratios associated with the first three of these factors were 2.31, 2.08 and 1.67, respectively. Compared with abstainers, the hazard ratios for males drinking 1-10 wine drinks x week(-1) and males drinking >10 wine drinks x week(-1) were 1.65 and 2.02, respectively. Among phenotype A subjects, only cumulative tobacco consumption was associated with lung cancer mortality risk. The predictive role of inflammation-related risk factors for lung cancer mortality was significantly stronger among males of phenotype O than A.  相似文献

Lowering alcohol intake reduces blood pressure and hence cardiovascular risk. However, abstainers have an increase in cardiovascular risk and the advice to reduce intake to low levels may not be sound. This review examines the effects of lowering alcohol consumption in terms of blood pressure and coronary heart disease (CHD). The relationship between both CHD and stroke and alcohol consumption, and the benefits and disadvantages of alcohol consumption in the general population, are discussed. Where available, the results of large meta-analyses are reported. It is concluded that the hypertensive patient over the age of 60 who drinks over 16 drinks per week should be advised to reduce his or her alcohol intake but a daily drink may be advisable and the patient should not stop drinking entirely. It is not suggested that the non-drinker should start drinking, but most hypertensives are over the age of 60 when community studies suggest that drinking alcohol does more good than harm.  相似文献

While emergency room (ER) studies have documented a strong association of alcohol and injury, less is known about the level of risk at which various quantities of alcohol or particular patterns of drinking place the individual for injury. Comparative risk function analyses are carried out in ER samples in seven countries that cover sites in 14 studies included in the Emergency Room Collaborative Alcohol Analysis Project (ERCAAP). Risk of injury is analyzed for the mean number of drinks consumed per day and the number of occasions in which 5 or more drinks were consumed at one time (5+) during the last year. All countries showed similar increases in injury risk to an average volume of about 2 drinks per day, with a leveling off of risk at higher average daily volumes, with the exception of Italy. Risk of injury increased to 12 or more 5+ days for the USA, Canada and Mexico, but leveled off after only 3 5+ days for Argentina and Spain. Poland showed increased risk to 30 5+ days. Similar risk curves were found for both males and females, although females were at lower risk of injury in all countries expect Spain and Poland. In low detrimental drinking pattern societies, risk curves showed higher risk for any drinking and any frequency of 5+ but at higher levels of each, risk levels decreased nearly to levels found for abstainers. Risk functions were also consistent across gender and age groups in low detrimental drinking pattern societies, with higher risk for males and those <30. For those countries with high detrimental drinking patterns, injury risk increased with volume and 5+ drinking primarily among males. This ER-based risk function analysis suggests that risk of injury increases proportionally with increased alcohol consumption at lower consumption levels, but a threshold effect is achieved at relatively low levels of mean daily consumption and higher consumption times. Risk may be culturally specific, dependent, in part, on the manner in which alcohol is used in the culture.  相似文献

Freshman medical students (96% of one class; n = 116) completed questionnaires on alcohol use at orientation, and again in April (n = 106) of that same year. Quantity/frequency and self-label ratings of alcohol use were employed to define normative ranges (in ethanol oz/wk). The confidentiality of student participants was protected. Males consumed five drinks per week over the summer and dropped to four per week during school; females consumed two drinks per week over both periods. Summertime and school year consumption rates were strongly correlated. Normative ranges of drinking converged from September to April, suggesting the emerging norms were the product of social experience with classmates. Class norms described a "cutpoint" separating acceptable range from excessive drinking (more than two drinks per day). The authors conclude that reliable "community norms" for medical students could be identified, the norms evolve over time, and they can be employed to determine the boundaries of acceptable drinking for research and screening purposes.  相似文献
