Sandfly captures from April 2001-September 2002 were compared to those from October 1996-September 1997 and October 1998-April 2000 in order to evaluate control procedures conducted in Recanto Marista in the county of Doutor Camargo, Paraná State, Brazil. Sandflies were captured with Falc?o traps twice a month, both in the domiciles and henhouses, from 10 PM to 2 AM. In 2001-2002, 199,821 sandflies were captured, with an hourly average of 1,625.5 insects; average captures in 1996-1997 and 1997-1998 were 1,641.9 and 806.7, respectively. Nyssomyia neivai was the most abundant species (90.4%) in all habitats. This species, together N. whitmani, Migonemyia migonei, and Pintomyia fischeri, accounted for 99.9% of all the specimens captured. The total hourly average sandfly captures increased, but 85% of these insects were captured in henhouses built with the purpose of attracting sandfly specimens, while the density decreased in other environments, especially intradomiciliary.  相似文献

Sandfly control measures were evaluated at the Da Barra Ranch, Lobato municipality, Paraná State, Brazil. The insects were captured with Falc?o traps in houses, a cattle corral, and a forest area from July to November 1999 and from February to June 2000. In December 1999 and January 2000 the following measures were taken to decrease the sandfly density in peridomiciliary areas and domiciles: (i) screens were placed on windows of buildings (domiciles, dormitory, cafeteria); (ii) all organic material was cleaned from the peridomiciliary area; and (iii) buildings were sprayed for insects. There were more Nyssomyia whitmani, Pintomyia fischeri, P. monticola, and Brumptomyia brumpti specimens in the former period, while N. neivai, Migonemyia migonei, and N. pessoai predominated in the latter. In the initial period most of the sandflies were captured in the forest and in the latter period in the houses. The sandfly control measures did not reduce the sandfly population on the Da Barra Ranch, but they led to significant proportional changes in the insect fauna composition.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To identify the sandfly fauna and some aspects of their behavior in forest and anthropic environments. METHODS: Sandfly captures were undertaken in farm (23 degrees 6' S; 50 degrees 22' W), in Southern Brazil. Falc?o light traps were set in forest, domicile and domestic animal shelters and mosquitoes were collected monthly, between 17h and 7h, from March 1997 to February 1998. RESULTS: A total of 3,655 specimens representing 13 species were captured. Nyssomyia whitmani and Nyssomyia neivai were the predominant species, with a total of 2,977 specimens (81.0%). Of these two species, a total of 2,552 (85.7%) specimens were captured in intradomiciliary and peridomiciliary environments, 2,332 (91.3%) of them in a pigsty. These two species predominated between 20h-21h when 90.4% of the specimens were captured. CONCLUSIONS: Five sandfly species, N. whitmani, N. neivai, Migonemyia migonei, Pintomyia pessoai and Pintomyia fischeri, potential vectors of cutaneous leishmaniasis, were captured. The importance of the two former species is emphasized, since both presented similar behavior in regard to seasonal period, hourly frequency and predominance in the anthropic environment. The results from sandfly collections in 10 municipalities in Paraná State, Brazil are reported. The captures were done using Falc?o traps in homes, domestic animal shelters and forested areas, from 1999 to 2002. A total of 13,653 sandflies were collected from 10 species of the genera Brumptomyia, Expapillata, Evandromyia, Migonemyia, Pintomyia, Nyssomyia and Psathyromyia. The species Nyssomyia neivai was predominant in five municipalities. N. whitmani predominated in the other five, in greater numbers than for N. neivai in the first five municipalities. High frequencies of sand flies were found in forests, homes, pigpens and henhouses. Investigations on the participation of domestic animals and phlebotomine fauna in the epidemiology of tegumentary leishmaniasis should be routine in health surveillance, especially where this disease is endemic.  相似文献

Sporadic cases of tegumentary leishmaniasis have occurred in Timóteo, Minas Gerais State, basically among the rural population. In order to study the region's sand fly population, New Jersey light traps were set in seven different neighborhoods. Specimens were gathered from June through October 1994, December 1994, and January through March 1995, with a total of 3,240 hours per trap. A total of 4,396 sand flies were captured, distributed among two genera and twenty species: Brumptomyia cunhai, Brumptomyia nitzulescui, Lutzomyia (Nyssomyia) whitmani, Lutzomyia (Nyssomyia) intermedia, Lutzomyia quinquefer, Lutzomyia lenti, Lutzomyia (Pintomyia) fischeri, Lutzomyia migonei, Lutzomyia sallesi, Lutzomyia termitophila, Lutzomyia aragaoi, Lutzomyia borgmeieri, Lutzomyia (Psathyromyia) lutziana, Lutzomyia (Sciopemyia) sordellii, Lutzomyia (Pintomyia) pessoai, Lutzomyia (Trichopygomyia) longispina, Lutzomyia misionensis, Lutzomyia (Psychodopygus) davisi, Lutzomyia lanei, Lutzomyia (Pressatia) sp. The species L. (N.) whitmani was the most frequent, with 52.12% of the total, followed by L. (N.) intermedia with 34.10%, and both may be involved in transmission of tegumentary leishmaniasis in the region.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To verify the influence of traps with electric light and hens as factors that attract sandflies and compare results between capture methods. METHODS: The study was conducted in the Palmital Farm, Southern Brazil. Sandfly collections were conducted with Falc?o traps and an electric aspirator, fortnightly, between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. in the presence or absence of light and hens in peridomiciliary areas, from September 1998 to June 1999. RESULTS: A total of 43,767 specimens from eight species of sandflies were collected: Nyssomyia whitmani, N. neivai and Migonemyia migonei constituting 99.9% of the total collected, with predominance of N. whitmani. The number of this species collected inside the hen's shed in the presence of hens (21,045) was greater than in their absence (10,434). In the presence of hens, with distinct intensities of light, a larger number of N. whitmani samples were collected with 3W light. In the presence of hens and light (3W), the number of N. whitmani collected with the electric aspirator (5,141) was superior to that collected with the Falc?o trap (1,675). In the absence of light, with or without the presence hens, there was no difference between the numbers of N. whitmani collected with the electric aspirator or the Falc?o trap. CONCLUSIONS: Hens and electric light together attract more N. whitmani to peridomicilary areas. The number of N. whitmani collected with an electric aspirator inside a hen's shed with the presence of hens and light is greater than those collected with a Falc?o trap in the same conditions.  相似文献

This paper analyzes the wealth of species, relative abundance, seasonal fluctuation, and nocturnal activity of sandflies. The field survey was conducted in a "capoeira" (secondary forest) area in the county of Pa?o do Lumiar, Maranh?o, where cutaneous and transmission of visceral leishmaniasis frequently occurs. Sandflies were captured by CDC-type light traps from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM, once a month, from March 1997 to February 1998. A total of 489 specimens were collected (251 males and 238 females), distributed among 10 species: Lutzomyia antunesi (45.19%), Lutzomyia whitmani (29.4%), Lutzomyia longipalpis (7.56%), Lutzomyia sordelli (6.34%), Lutzomyia flaviscutellata (4.5%), Brumptomyia avellari (4.09%), Lutzomyia evandroi (1.85%), Lutzomyia umbratilis (0.61%), Lutzomyia corossoniensis (0.41%), and Lutzomyia trispinosa (0.41%). The sandflies were present year round, with higher abundance during the rainy season. They were present in all intervals studied, with the highest frequency between 12:00 PM and 1:00 AM (31%).  相似文献

This study reports the results from sandfly captures at six sites in a rural area of Japurá, Paraná State, Brazil, showing the vector's presence indoors, outdoors, and in residual forest. Sandfly captures were performed with Falc?o traps from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. At sites 195, 223, 236, and 527, three captures were performed at different times from December 2007 to January 2009. At sites 175 and 218, captures were performed from January to December 2008. 8,453 sandflies were captured, with an average of 155.40 specimens per hour. Nyssomyia neivai was the predominant species. Most sandflies were captured in domestic animal shelters (75.91 per hour) and in ciliary forest (38.45 per hour) during the hottest and rainiest months, in the outdoor environment with accumulation of organic matter and inadequate disposal of household wastewater. The study emphasizes the need for regular outdoor cleaning around households and building domestic animal shelters far from residences.  相似文献

A two-year investigation was conducted in Itaguai, State of Rio de Janeiro, an area with cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis, in order to study the ecology of sandflies and their habits and role as parasitic vector for men and animals. Capturing took place at three sites: domiciliary (human bait, walls, and light traps); peridomiciliary (walls, from baits used simultaneously: humans, dogs, and chickens; and light traps); and sylvatic (human bait and light traps). A total of 10,172 sandflies were captured, belonging to 17 species of genuses Brumptomyia Fran?a & Parrot, 1921 and Lutzomyia Fran?a, 1924. L. intermedia was predominant, 100 m above sea level, as compared to L. migonei and L. fischeri. In a drier area 300 m above sea level L. migonei was prevalent, followed by L. longipalpis and L. fischeri. The species which presented the greatest endophily was L. fischeri, showing a certain degree of eclecticism regarding the biting site. L. intermedia and L. migonei proved to be more exophilic. L. intermedia was considered to be potentially the main transmitter of the disease because of its prevalence, anthropophily, and the fact it is known to be a vector of Leishmania (V.) braziliensis in other areas of the Southeastern region of Brazil. Tree felling around a chicken coop and periodic insecticide spraying at the Palmital farm in the county of Terra Boa in southern Brazil impacted the ecology of sand fly species. The most prevalent species (51.6%) before clearing the trees and insecticide spraying was Lutzomyia migonei (Fran?a, 1920), and it is now Lutzomyia (Nyssomyia) whitmani (Antunes & Coutinho, 1939) (89.8%). There was a highly significant difference between the proportions of L. whitmani reported by this paper (89.8%) and another publication before the tree felling and insecticide spraying (32,6%).  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To study the fauna, hours of activity and seasonality of phlebotomines in forest animal habitats in the Ingá Park, on the urban perimeter of the municipality of Maringá, Paraná State, Brazil. METHODS: Phlebotomines were collected on the urban perimeter using Shannon traps from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. and Falc?o traps from 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight, on two nights per month from October 1998 to September 2000. The Shannon traps were installed close to forest animal habitats and on the banks of the Moscados stream; the Falc?o traps were placed in shelters for captive birds, forest mammals and reptiles. RESULTS: The Shannon traps yielded 13,656 phlebotomines, with predominance of Lutzomyia whitmani (98.7%). The Falc?o traps yielded 4,040 phlebotomines, with L. whitmani again predominating (96.3%). L. whitmani was most frequently found between 12:00 midnight and 2:00 a.m. in the Shannon traps. This species was most frequently collected in the months of August (55.1%) in the Shannon traps, and in March 1999 (19.2%), November 1999 (15.9%) and August 2000 (20.6%) in the Falc?o traps. More phlebotomines were collected in Falc?o traps installed in shelters for captive mammals (84.0%). CONCLUSION: There was a clear predominance of L. whitmani in the Ing Park. The greatest frequency of L. whitmani was in August from Shannon traps, and in March and November from Falc?o traps. The peak activity of L. whitmani took place between 12:00 midnight and 2:00 a.m.  相似文献

This article presents a list of ten sandfly species from the genus Lutzomyia Fran?a, 1924 found in the counties of Aldeias Altas, Capinzal do Norte, Caxias, Codó, Coelho Neto, Timbiras, Timon and Tuntum in northeastern Maranh?o, Brazil. Presence of sandflies was associated with cases of visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis. Some 377 specimens were captured indoors with CDC light traps and 1491 specimens in the peridomicile. The species were: Lutzomyia cortelezii, Lutzomyia evandroi, Lutzomyia goiana, Lutzomyia intermedia, Lutzomyia lenti, Lutzomyia longipalpis, Lutzomyia longipennis, Lutzomyia squamiventris, Lutzomyia termitophila and Lutzomyia whitmani. The most abundant species was L. longipalpis (67. 4% and 70.2%) followed by L. whitmani (31.0% and 24.7%). L. longipalpis was captured both indoors and outdoors in all the months studied.  相似文献

An outbreak of American cutaneous leishmaniasis was reported in 2002 in Mariluz, northwestern Paraná State, Brazil. Of 38 humans who were investigated, four had healed lesions, ten showed lesions in the healing process, and 24 had active lesions. Of the 126 dogs, 20 (15.9%) presented suggestive lesions and 24 (19%) had positive serology. Parasites isolated from two patients and three dogs were identified as Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis serodeme I. The captured sand flies were identified as Nyssomyia whitmani, N. neivai, and Migonemyia migonei. Considering that the region where the cases occurred is similar to other old human settlements in Paraná State, the environmental alterations and remaining forests facilitate the maintenance of the parasite's enzootic cycle and transmission to humans and domestic animals, thereby maintaining the endemicity of American cutaneous leishmaniasis.  相似文献

Between July 1983 and December 1984 natural flagellate infections were found in 114 (1%) of 11,586 female phlebotomine sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) of 21 species. A further 1084 females of 17 other species were not infected. Identification of the organisms on a number of occasions confirms the exclusive parasite/vector relationship of Leishmania mexicana amazonensis/Lutzomyia flaviscutellata and Le. braziliensis braziliensis/Psychodopygus "wellcomei". Undescribed or unidentified Leishmania spp. were isolated from Lu. shawi, Lu. ubiquitalis, Lu. whitmani, Ps. hirsutus, Ps. paraensis Ps. "wellcomei", and trypanosomes from Lu. nordestina and Lu. trinidadensis. Flagellate infections were recorded in 8 of 21 species examined for the first time, and some were isolated directly from insects into cultures. Le. b. braziliensis was transmitted to a hamster by the bite of a wild-caught, naturally infected Ps. "wellcomei". 7 of the 35 infected Ps. "wellcomei" were allowed to oviposit and the eggs were reared to adults. Four produced Ps. wellcomei males only, confirming the r?le of this species as the major vector of Le. b. braziliensis.  相似文献

135 stocks of Leishmania major from man, reservoir hosts and sandflies were characterized using thin-layer starch-gel electrophoresis of 13 enzymes: MDH, 6PGD, GD, SOD, ASAT, ALAT, PK, PGM, ES, NH, PEPD, MPI, GPI. Homogeneity in this species was demonstrated by identical electrophoretic mobilities in nine enzymes. Polymorphism in four enzymes: 6PGD, GPI, PEPD, ES, gave six zymodemes among the collection. Stocks from sandflies and several species of burrowing rodents were indistinguishable from those from man in the same areas. Stocks of Leishmania from North-West India were identified as L. major. In some foci the distribution of zymodemes has some correlation with the presence of particular rodent reservoir hosts. The enzymic homogeneity of L. major throughout its geographical and host range appears to be correlated with the close association between L. major and sandflies of the subgenus Phlebotomus. The status of L. major as a distinct species is supported.  相似文献

Spatial distribution of mosquitoes around a bovine host was studied in November 1997 in northern Thailand (17 degrees 38'N. 99 degrees 23'E). Forty bamboo stakes were arranged 1 m apart, in 4 rays of 10, around a cow tethered in an open field. All mosquitoes found resting on the stakes were collected by aspiration between 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., sexed, and identified to species; and feeding status was categorized as fed or unfed. Collections were repeated over 8 nights, with and without the host cow. A total of 1,566 mosquitoes from 25 species (5 genera) was collected. Anopheles aconitus was the most abundant species (643 individuals), followed by An. peditaeniatus. Culex vishnui, and Cx. pseudovishnui. We found that the number of mosquitoes collected from the stakes was related to the presence of the cow host: the number of mosquitoes collected was unrelated to the compass point location of the bamboo stakes, with the exception of Mansonia uniformis; unfed mosquitoes preferred bamboo-stake resting sites that were closer to the host; the daily fed to unfed ratio of the dominant species was negatively correlated with the daily total number of mosquitoes collected; and fed and unfed mosquitoes clustered in interspecific heterogeneous groups around the host cow. Cluster analysis separated the species into 2 groups. The 1st consisted of 5 species with higher proportions of fed mosquitoes, whereas the 2nd, represented by 7 species, aggregated around the host within a distance of 1-4 m with lower proportions of fed mosquitoes. The interspecific variation in the distribution of unfed females was presumed to be due to a lack or feeding success. We discuss the significance of prebiting resting. In cases in which large numbers of mosquitoes are present, prebiting resting can be adaptive to avoid host defensive behavior triggered by attacking mosquitoes.  相似文献

Traditional morphometrics remains a useful tool for differentiating sandflies species, particularly closely related taxa. Within a single species, however, size variation among geographic populations might interfere with species distinction. In the past decades, a search for a metric property less prone to individual variations led to the use of ratios, and more recently to the use of size-free variables (after tentative size extraction). While morphometrics is continuously enriched with new, more efficient techniques describing shape, the question remains for the morphologist whether an efficient removing of within-species size variation is sufficient to produce stable, specific characters. Is a single species metrically recognizable in spite of its geographical variation? To address this question the intraspecific variation in 10 neotropical sandflies was examined within and between large South American ecogeographic regions: the Amazonian region, the Sub-Andean and the Chaco regions of Bolivia, and the Atlantic Coast of Brazil. Thus, the geographic stability of metric properties, as derived from measurements between landmarks, was investigated 10 times allowing a total of 29 inter-regional and 13 intra-regional conspecific comparisons. Metric proportions remained stable among conspecific populations of a single ecogeographic region. From one region to another, however, size-independent changes were significant and their amount was correlated with altitude. This could reflect an important role of some environmental changes in shaping the insects, and should be taken into account when using morphometrics to identify sandflies.  相似文献

The reservoir animals, sandfly vectors and strains of Leishmania from foci in the southern region of Israel were studied. The rodent host species are: Psammomys obesus, Meriones crassus and probably Nesokia indica. The vector species are Phlebotomus papatasi, which were caught at all collecting sites and Ph. sergenti, which were collected in the area of the Dead Sea and in the Central Arava. Strains of Leishmania major isolated from rodents, vectors and man were serologically and enzymologically identical with regard to their excreted factor (EF) serotypes, their malate dehydrogenase (MDH), glucose-phosphate isomerase (GPI) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) enzyme variant types, but exhibited three variant subtypes of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGDH). The distribution of the 6PGDH subtypes correlates with three different geographical locations. Scarcity of water is the main factor limiting the biotopes of the sandflies and the spread of leishmaniasis. The subjects discussed are the dependence of sandfly distribution on rodent-burrow depth in arid areas and the inter-relationship between the leishmanial subtypes, vectors and hosts.  相似文献

Parent and child heights and weights were measured.AnalysisMultilevel analyses were employed to consider the nested nature of the data: time points within families within waves.ResultsThe program had predicted effects on parental feeding practices, styles, and knowledge in the pre- to post-comparisons. Effects on child eating behavior were minimal; only the number of different vegetables tried showed significant pre-post differences.Conclusions and ImplicationsShort-term effects of this prevention program highlight the importance of family-focused feeding approaches to combating child overweight and obesity.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to detect phlebotomine sand fly vector species by using light traps, and thus determine the risk of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) transmission in rural areas of the Vi?osa microregion, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Sand flies were captured with Shannon-like and Falc?o light traps hung between 1830 and 2230 h on 22 nights. Four sampling points where CL transmission occurs naturally were chosen. A total of 888 sand flies was collected. The most abundant species was Lutzomyia intermedia. Shannon-like traps caught significantly more L. intermedia, perhaps because of a greater surface area on which the insects can land or because they reflect more light. The positive phototaxis observed in L. intermedia and L. whitmani may pose a greater risk of transmission of Leishmania in houses where an external light source is situated close to a light-colored wall that reflects light and that have adjacent bushes or trees and domestic animal shelters within 50 m.  相似文献
