AbstractAim: To determine the relationship between treatment need assessment scores of orthodontists, general practitioners, and pediatric dentists.Study design: Observational.Sample: Ten general dental practitioners, 18 orthodontists and 15 pediatric dentists reviewed 137 dental casts and recorded their opinion on whether orthodontic treatment was needed. Results: We found a high level of agreement between pediatric dentists, orthodontists and general practitioners (Kappa range 0.86–0.95). Between the groups, the amount of agreement was lower. Conclusions: Orthodontists, general dental practitioners, and pediatric dentists in this sample exhibit high levels of agreement on orthodontic treatment need. 相似文献

AbstractThe aim of this investigation was to establish a regime for orthodontic bonding to feldspathic porcelain, which ensures adequate bond strength (6–8 MPa) with minimal damage on debond and consisted of an ex vivo investigation measuring the effects of porcelain surface preparation and thermocycling on shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets.One-hundred-and-twenty feldspathic porcelain bonded crown surfaces were divided into 12 equally-sized groups to assess the effects of: (1) glaze removal, (2) application of hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acid, or omission of acid treatment, and (3) silane priming upon the bond strength of premolar brackets bonded with Right-on ? composite resin adhesive. Specimens were subjected to thermocycling and then to shear debonding forces on an Instron machine.Removal of the porcelain glaze, or use of hydrofluoric acid, prior to bonding were found to be unnecessary to secure the target bond strength. Hydrofluoric acid application was associated with increased porcelain surface damage. Thermocycling caused a significant reduction in shear bond strength to porcelain (P < 0?001). The best regime for orthodontic bonding to feldspathic porcelain was to apply phosphoric acid for 60 seconds, and prime with silane prior to bonding. Usually the porcelain surfaces could be repolished.Refereed Paper 相似文献

AbstractObjectives: To test the use of Moyers prediction method and Tanaka and Johnston’s equations for use in a Nepalese population and to construct new probability tables and prediction formulae based on the actual tooth sizes in a sample of the Nepalese population.Design: Cross-sectional.Source and setting: Dental, medical and nursing science students at the B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan, Nepal.Subjects and methods: The sample consisted of 100 Nepalese males and 100 females aged between 17 and 23 years. Subjects without any previous orthodontic treatment, fully erupted permanent teeth and with no dental anomalies were recruited. Dental study models were taken and measurements of the mesio-distal widths of teeth were carried out using digital caliper. The measured values were compared with predicted values derived from Moyers method and Tanaka and Johnston equations. Independent t tests were used to examine differences between genders. Correlation coefficients and linear regression equations were used to compare the actual Nepalese tooth widths with predicted valuesResults: Moyers method at 50% tends to underestimate the actual width of the canine and premolars in males by 0.3 mm and overestimate the width in females by 0.2 mm. The Tanaka and Johnston method tends to overestimate the actual width of the canine and premolars in both males (0.7 mm) and females 1.0 mm.Conclusion: The newly developed regression equations are more accurate for prediction of width of unerupted permanent teeth in a Nepalese population. Further studies are required based on larger sample size, to confirm the applicability of the new regression equations proposed. 相似文献

AbstractPrepared samples of light-activated composite were cured by transillumination of tooth tissue in healthy volunteers. Positioning of the samples and the direction of illumination was designed to simulate curing during direct bonding. The effectiveness of curing was investigated by determination of surface microhardness. The degree of polymerization of the specimens cured by transillumination was found to be reduced compared to the control samples cured by direct exposure to the light source. 相似文献

AbstractThe literature on the psychological effects of a cleft lip and/or palate is considered within the context of findings on facial abnormalities in general and the relationship between appearance and attitude formation. It is suggested that predictions from the general to the particular case of the cleft child are not always in the direction that might be anticipated, for there is little evidence of specific or severe psychological sequaelae to clefts. Nevertheless, there are indications of possible areas of difficulty and an outline for further research is put forward. 相似文献

The Conjoint Gold Medal was awarded to the candidate who scored the highest overall mark in Part II of the Membership of Orthodontics examination held by the Royal college of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong. It is the intermediate examination for the orthodontic specialty training pathway in Hong Kong. Part of this examination involved the presentation of a fully documented fixed appliance case and a multidisciplinary case, and three other cases with condensed case histories. This article described two surgical orthodontic cases presented during the 1999 and 2002 examinations by the award winners. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Continuing education (CE) is an essential professional activity. In the last decade, CE has been actively pursued by the medical profession in Australia and abroad. However, the uptake of CE in dentistry has been much slower and there is minimal Australian data on dental CE. METHODS: To determine the level of CE activity, in 1998, postal questionnaires were sent to all fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. The responses were analysed. RESULTS: There was a high response rate (90 per cent) but a moderate usable rate (54 per cent). The results show a biphasic distribution between high and low CE activity. The average amount of activity of those involved in CE was 116 hours per year, above the usually accepted minimum of 100 hours/year. Some groups, particularly members of the specialist divisions of oral and maxillofacial surgeons (215 hours) and periodontists (205 hours), have high levels of CE. However, approximately 25 per cent of college fellows reported little or no CE activity. The survey revealed that inactive fellows are more likely to be older and in general practice. Inactive fellows were also tardy in replying to the questionnaire. CONCLUSION: The high activity CE group needs to be recognised and encouraged to continue. Specific plans to help the low CE activity group should be developed. Although these findings relate directly to the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, they are presented as they have implications for the dental profession at large. 相似文献

This paper describes the clinical treatment of two cases presented by the recipient of the 2015 Bi-collegiate Membership in Orthodontics John Kay Williams Gold Medal of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Glasgow. The first case describes the management of an 11-year-old male with a class II Division 1 malocclusion with a 9?mm overjet complicated by an upper anterior odontome and moderate upper arch crowding. The second case describes a 14-year-old female with a class III malocclusion with a reverse overjet complicated by moderate lower arch crowding and previously removed upper permanent canines. 相似文献

A consensus conference organised by the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI) and the Association of Surgeons of Training (ASIT) was held at the Royal College of Surgeons of England on 2 September 2005. All Specialist Advisory Committees and specialist associations were represented, except for orthopaedic surgery. The future of both academic surgery and training were discussed. We concluded that the European Working Time Directive, and Modernising Medical Careers are likely to have an adverse effect on future of research in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Most surgeons were concerned about the future of training and the development of surgery in general. 相似文献
