Increased job opportunities in health professions make recruitment of students imperative. Effective recruitment requires a knowledge of what students value when making career decisions. This study of dietetic (n = 514) and other college students (n = 352) showed that achievement and economic security were the most important factors in their career selection regardless of major or race. Dietetic majors rated achievement, economic security, ability utilization, personal development, altruism, and working conditions significantly higher than did nondietetic students (p < or = 0.001). Economic security was rated significantly more important by dietetic and allied health majors than by other students. Many of the values important to students in this study are attainable through careers in dietetics and other allied health professions. The results of this study should be examined further with a larger sample of allied health majors to assist educators in recruiting and providing career counseling to students.  相似文献

Including hospice, as a concept of care, into existing allied health curricula is very important. Hospice should be integrated into the curricula of allied health programs. In addition to offering courses on hospice care, there are many novel ideas for exposing students to aspects of hospice care including grand rounds, self-instruction packets, journal clubs, honors program presentations, monthly forums, and clerkships. Federal funding is important to support and develop hospice training as well as other resources.  相似文献

This article describes and illustrates a conceptual model for nurses who wish to assist clients in attaining or maintaining sexual health. The Sexual Health Model for Nursing Intervention provides form and direction for nurses at all levels when they address client concerns or problems related to sexual health. Interactions between the nurse and the client are the foundation of all the components in this model. The four steps of the nursing process encompass all the other processes and approaches contained within the model. The communication, therapeutic, and teaching processes define the role and skills of the nurse. The adaptation of the PLISSIT model, contained within the processes, is a hierarchy of interventions that guide the nurse's activities. The use of the model can assist nurses in making an important contribution to client sexual health.  相似文献

The professional education process can be a psychologically stressful experience. Academic pressures associated with the study of difficult material, long hours of classroom instruction, and clinical practice often combine to intensify psychological stress associated with pressures of college life. This study offers an objective evaluation system that can be used to identify perceived sources of stress and corresponding coping strategies. Data is presented from one group of allied health students and is discussed in light of existing stress and coping data.  相似文献

More knowledge and skills related to health promotion/disease prevention are being required of health professionals. Allied health graduates entering the workforce will need academic preparation in these areas. This study assessed faculty perspectives on the status of health promotion content in allied health programs by a survey of 524 program directors. A questionnaire gathered information about perception of importance, level of representation, and method of delivery of health promotion content. Response rate was 41%. The majority of participants thought this content area was important for their programs and was highly or moderately represented in their curricula. Level of representation was significantly associated with requirement for accreditation. Programs in the Northeast were more likely to think health promotion was important and those in the West were more likely to have it integrated into their curricula. The most common delivery modality was guest lecture. Allied health is adopting health promotion curricular content, but further study is needed to assess programs and faculty expertise and identify strategies to ensure greater consistency of delivering material.  相似文献

Innovative interdisciplinary education in allied health has been developed in order to give students insight into role competencies of other professionals, improve the quality of health care while reducing costs, and facilitate the interdependent functioning of allied health care providers in meeting patient or client needs. The process of interdisciplinary course development requires the same communication and needs identification by faculty as is necessary for the provision of team care by practitioners. A retrospective account of interdisciplinary course development in a major health sciences center, together with materials developed for class presentation, may serve to encourage this type of activity elsewhere.  相似文献

The purpose of this article is to present a model for a course that teaches noncognitive skills to dietetic students in a workshop format. The course was developed by the Department of Nutrition and Medical Dietetics in consultation with the Counseling Service at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The behavior change project and dietary compliance workshop serve as the unifying focus of the course. Also stressed are the dietitian's role as a change agent, personality-type differences, and videotape feedback on interviewing and counseling. Attention to the varying roles of change agents helps students see the dietitian as a potentially powerful instrument of change. Discussing differences in personality types leads to a realization that there is more than one appropriate way to approach professional activities. The activities on dietary compliance and behavior change integrate all other aspects of the course by examining the multiple factors that affect whether clients change eating behaviors.  相似文献

Objective:  To quantify the financial impact of rural clinical placements on medical, nursing and allied health students in rural Australia.
Design:  The Careers in Health Tracking Survey provided data on whether students were employed, usual weekly hours of employment and a range of covariates, such as age, sex, course of study, marital status, dependants and rural or urban origin.
Participants:  A total of 121 students from a range of health professions completed the Careers in Health Tracking Survey while on rural placement at the Northern Rivers University Department of Rural Health.
Outcome measures:  Survey data.
Results:  Forty-one per cent of respondents were working immediately before their clinical placements. Nursing students worked the longest hours by far and were significantly more financially disadvantaged than both medical and allied health students ( P <  0.01). Scholarship support was unevenly distributed, with nursing and allied health students being relatively under-supported in relation to lost earnings.
Conclusion:  Recruitment of students can be an effective strategy to address the rural health workforce shortage throughout Australia. However, there are a number of financial disincentives for students to undertake rural clinical placements. Additional support for some disciplines is needed to provide equitable distribution of scholarship support to offset this financial burden. Establishing an employment scheme for students on rural clinical placements and a scholarship for income replacement where employment is not available would also alleviate income loss.  相似文献

The variety and complexity of evaluation designs, procedures and philosophies has proved confusing for educators and health practitioners. Many evaluation models do not provide for the scope of information needed by allied health programs and are inflexible in regard to the information needs of individual programs. The model presented here is based on the principles of "Systems Theory," which provides a comprehensive framework for the study of educational programs. Input, process, product and environment components are proposed as a method to study all aspects of program operations. With clearly definable rules for the evaluator and program decision-makers, the faculty can adopt and change the course of the evaluation as they work through the planning, implementation and recycling stages of the model. Use of the model should help programs identify information needs and bring existing evaluation efforts together under a comprehensive umbrella.  相似文献

Background: Growing requirements to train more dietetic students greatly increase the teaching burden on clinical supervisors. This may be reduced if students can develop basic nutrition assessment skills before they commence clinical placement. To test achievement of these skills by Australian dietetic students, a preclinical objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) was developed. Performance at this OSCE was then compared with the performance at first clinical placement. Methods: An OSCE was developed to test preclinical skills during the third year of a 4‐year dietetic degree. Learning outcomes relating to nutritional assessment skills were assessed via a 1‐h preclinical examination. Student application of these skills was then assessed after the first clinical placement, when performance was compared with the results at the preclinical OSCE. Results: One hundred and ninety‐three students completed the preclinical OSCE and first clinical placement during the period 2002–2007. A strong relationship was observed for individual student scores at the OSCE and the score achieved at the end of clinical placement (β = 0.66; 95% confidence interval = 0.46–0.86; P < 0.0001). This relationship was maintained even when outliers were removed. No specific year effect was apparent. Conclusions: A third‐year preclinical dietetic OSCE was found to be a valuable method of formative assessment for assisting dietetic students with the preparation for their first clinical placement. It aided the early identification of those students who are likely to do less well on their first clinical placement.  相似文献

This article describes a successful developmental program specifically designed for academically "high risk" students entering a two-year community college career program in allied health. The program consisted of providing an intensive three-week instructional program to students before they entered the allied health career program, and subsequently providing an ongoing support system of tutoring, counseling and career development activities. Participants attained higher levels of academic performance and retention than nonparticipants.  相似文献

In response to reports and trends suggesting a national shortage of health professionals, a survey was administered to graduates from Houston's High School for Health Professions, in part to measure their interests in pursuing higher education and careers in the allied health fields. Project administrators were concerned that only 82 of 1,028 survey respondents indicating a career choice (8.0%) expressed interests in allied health. The career choices, educational pursuits, perceptions regarding likelihood of career attainment, and factors influencing career attainment of these 82 respondents were examined. Ultimately, it is believed that many students are unaware of allied health professions, and that others simply do not perceive allied health disciplines as attractive career options. Results of this study are consistent with other reports suggesting that new strategies must be employed nationally to promote greater participation in allied health, especially by groups previously underrepresented in these professions.  相似文献

Under the auspices of the Kentucky Council on Higher Education, and with the aim of delineating issues in allied health education and making recommendations for alleviating the issues, an indepth, two-year study was completed in 1975. The primary recommendations pertained to the development of a statewide plan for allied health education that would result in an articulated statewide system permitting entry and exit of prepared personnel at a variety of levels and improving inter-institutional efforts to share educational resources. In the following four years a foundation was laid for developing the system. An articulated system of allied health education was developed in six disciplinary clusters to serve as a model for other states: clinical laboratory, dental auxiliaries, dietetics/nutrition, rehabilitation therapies, radiological science, and respiratory therapy programs. All levels of programs within each discipline cluster existing in Kentucky are included in the system. The study includes a design phase and an implementation phase. During the design phase, six discipline advisory groups developed articulation models for the programs in each discipline. Implementation phase accomplishments include signed transfer agreements, development of model and core curricula, design for graduate follow-up, publications, development of manpower models, and increased cooperation among project participants.  相似文献
