Intermittent exposure to the same stressor can lead to a gradual decline in physiological, neuroendocrine and behavioral stress responses (habituation). We investigated possible habituation of cardiac autonomic responsiveness and susceptibility to cardiac arrhythmias in male rats exposed to either intermittent social victory (VIC) or defeat (DEF) stress (10 exposures in each case). Electrocardiograms were recorded via radiotelemetry and the sympathovagal balance at the level of the heart was evaluated via time-domain measurements of heart rate variability, namely average R--R interval (average time interval between two consecutive heart beats, RR), the standard deviation of RR (SD(RR)) and the root-mean-square of successive R--R interval differences (r-MSSD). Values of these parameters were significantly lower in DEF as compared to VIC rats in the second part of the test period (from Minute 6 to Minute 15), suggesting a more pronounced sympathetic dominance in the former group of animals. Accordingly, the occurrence of the most frequent cardiac arrhythmias (ventricular and supraventricular premature beats) was higher in DEF rats. Habituation of cardiac autonomic responsivity was observed across repeated exposure to victory, both in terms of sympathovagal balance and susceptibility to cardiac tachyarrhythmias, whereas no habituation was found in repeatedly defeated animals. A possible explanation to this discrepancy could be the different degree of controllability characterizing the two social challenging situations.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to apply a behavioural stress paradigm for studying the neural mechanisms underlying stress-induced arrhythmias, and to test whether such arrhythmias could be suppressed by systemic administration of 8-OH-DPAT, a 5-HT1A agonist possessing central sympatholytic properties. The study was conducted on adult male rats instrumented for telemetric recordings of ECG, body temperature and locomotor activity. In the first experiment, rats were subjected to social defeat after either 8-OH-DPAT (100 µg/kg s.c.) or vehicle injection. In the second experiment, prior to vehicle/8-OH-DPAT administration, animals were pre-treated with zatebradine, a blocker of the pacemaker current. 8-OH-DPAT caused prolongation of basal RR interval, increase in locomotion and hypothermia. Subjecting vehicle-treated animals to social defeat caused shortening in RR interval, increase in locomotor activity and hyperthermia, and provoked the occurrence of premature ventricular and supraventricular beats; all these effects were substantially attenuated by 8-OH-DPAT. Zatebradine caused prolongation of RR interval. In zatebradine/vehicle-treated rats, the incidence of ventricular and supraventricular premature beats during defeat increased 2.5-fold and 3.5-fold, respectively. 8-OH-DPAT administered after zatebradine significantly reduced these stress-induced arrhythmias. We conclude that: i) pharmacologically induced prolongation of RR interval may contribute to an increased susceptibility to stress-induced cardiac arrhythmias, possibly due to the prolongation of the ventricular diastolic period with restored excitability; and ii) systemic administration of 8-OH-DPAT abolishes these arrhythmic events, likely by suppressing stress-induced cardiac sympathetic outflow.

Exposure to acute stress has been shown to increase the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in brain, blood and peripheral organs. However, the nature of the inflammatory response evoked by acute stress varies depending on the stressor used and species examined. The goal of the following series of studies was to characterize the consequences of social defeat in the Sprague Dawley (SD) rat using three different social defeat paradigms. In Experiments 1 and 2, adult male SD rats were exposed to a typical acute resident-intruder paradigm of social defeat (60 min) by placement into the home cage of a larger, aggressive Long Evans rat and brain tissue was collected at multiple time points for analysis of IL-1β protein and gene expression changes in the PVN, BNST and adrenal glands. In subsequent experiments, rats were exposed to once daily social defeat for 7 or 21 days (Experiment 3) or housed continuously with an aggressive partner (separated by a partition) for 7 days (Experiment 4) to assess the impact of chronic social stress on inflammatory measures. Despite the fact that social defeat produced a comparable corticosterone response as other stressors (restraint, forced swim and footshock; Experiment 5), acute social defeat did not affect inflammatory measures. A small but reliable increase in IL-1 gene expression was observed immediately after the 7th exposure to social defeat, while other inflammatory measures were unaffected. In contrast, restraint, forced swim and footshock all significantly increased IL-1 gene expression in the PVN; other inflammatory factors (IL-6, cox-2) were unaffected in this structure. These findings provide a comprehensive evaluation of stress-dependent inflammatory changes in the SD rat, raising intriguing questions regarding the features of the stress challenge that may be predictive of stress-dependent neuroinflammation.  相似文献

Plasma noradrenaline (NA), adrenaline (A), and corticosterone (CS) responses to social and nonsocial stressors were studied in male members of a strain of wild-type rats, widely differing in their level of aggression. The aggressiveness was preliminarily established by measuring the latency time to attack (ALT) a male intruder in a standard resident-intruder test. Animals were then provided with a jugular vein cannula for blood sampling during stress exposure. Implanted rats were randomly assigned to 3 experimental treatments: social stress (defeat experience, SD), nonsocial stress (presentation of a shock-prod, SP) and control (animals undisturbed in their home cages, CTR). A significant correlation was found between ALT and the amount of time spent in burying the probe in SP rats: the more aggressive the animal, the higher the rate of burying behavior. SD induced a much stronger effect on plasma NA, A, and CS concentrations than SP. A significant negative correlation was found between ALT scores and values of the area under the response time curve for NA and A, in both SD and SP situations: the more aggressive the animal, the higher the catecholaminergic reactivity to the stressors. On the contrary, no evidence of a correlation between aggressiveness and plasma corticosterone responses was found, neither in SD nor in SP rats. These findings in an unselected strain of wild-type rats confirmed that an aggressive/active coping strategy is associated with a high sympathetic-adrenomedullary activation and support the concept of individual differentiation in coping styles as a coherent set of behavioral and neuroendocrine characteristics.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to identify the frequency of cardiac dysrhythmias in two similar groups of hypertensive middle-aged males (age 45-66). They had previously been randomized either to a diuretic treatment (n = 42), or a beta-blocking agent (n = 41). A 24-hour ambulatory Holter monitoring, and serum potassium, was obtained in all patients, serum magnesium was measured in 35 patients. The mean number of ventricular premature beats (VPBs) and the frequency of complex arrhythmias (19 vs. 5) was significantly higher in the diuretic group (p less than 0.01). The serum potassium was significantly lower (p less than 0.001) in the diuretic group, and there was a significant (p less than 0.005) inverse correlation between the number of VPBs and the serum potassium in all treated patients. The patients with complex arrhythmias were older (p less than 0.01) than the remainder of the patients. No correlation between serum magnesium and VPBs or complex arrhythmias was found. This study demonstrates increased frequency of VPBs in older hypertensive males, treated with diuretics, and that hypokalaemia predisposes to increased cardiac arrhythmias. We conclude that in older mildly hypertensive men hypokalaemia should be avoided.  相似文献

The effects in male rats of serotonin depletion (using the neurotoxin 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine) on the cross-sensitization of an acute social stress (defeat by a larger resident male) by previous repeated restraint stress (10 days, 60 min per day) was studied. Previous restraint increased freezing responses during social defeat in sham-operated rats, but this was not observed in those with depleted serotonin (83% or more in different regions of the brain). In contrast, neither heart rate (tachycardia) nor core temperature responses (hyperthermia) were accentuated in previously restrained rats (i.e. neither showed heterotypical sensitization), and neither adapted to repeated restraint (there is a hypothermic core temperature response during restraint). Corticosterone levels, which did adapt, nevertheless did not show accentuated responses to social defeat in previously restrained rats, though samples could only be taken 60 min after defeat. c-fos expression in the central nucleus of the amygdala 60 min after social defeat was increased by previous restraint. No other areas examined in the hypothalamus (e.g., paraventricular nucleus) or brainstem (e.g., solitary nucleus) showed differences related to previous restraint. Serotonin depletion reduced the expression of c-fos in the frontal cortex, lateral preoptic area, medial amygdala, central gray, medial and dorsal raphe, and locus coeruleus after social stress, but this was not altered by previous restraint. These results show that serotonin depletion has selective effects on the cross-sensitization of responses in previously stressed rats to a heterotypical stressor.  相似文献

Male rats from six inbred rat strains (Spontaneously Hypertensive Rat, Wistar Kyoto, Brown Norway, Wistar Furth, Fischer 344, and Lewis) have been compared for their behavioral reactivity when placed in several nonsocial (elevated plus-maze, open field) and social (social interaction in aversive and neutral environment, resident–intruder test, chronic social stress) settings. In addition, a factorial analysis was performed to assess how the variables measured in these different tests related to each other. Besides significant strain-related differences in all tests, the factorial analysis showed that, in nonsocial environments, the strains contrasted essentially along two independent behavioral traits, the propensity to approach or avoid an aversive stimulus and general motor activity in novel environments (two indices of emotionality). In the social settings, marked interstrain differences were observed regarding the expression of aggressive behaviors but these differences were not related to the respective levels on the two nonsocial components of reactivity. Furthermore, large genetic differences were observed in variations of body weight induced by a chronic social stressor paradigm. The factorial analysis suggested a lack of relationship between the effect of social stressors on body weight and the measures of emotionality and general activity obtained in the nonsocial tests. Conversely, these variations were influenced by the levels of aggressiveness and sociability. Taken together, these results show (i) that the behavioral variability observed in rats, in social and nonsocial environments, is influenced by genetic factors and (ii) that the behavioral reactivity to social stimulations is a specific feature, dissociable from the levels of the different components of emotionality (approach/avoidance and general activity) as evaluated by the behavioral responses to nonsocial settings.  相似文献

The R-R interval varies with the cycles of respiration. The response of the variability in the R-R interval with respiration was examined during sinusoidal cycle exercise in 12 healthy young male subjects. Work rate varied sinusoidally between 30 W and 60% maximal oxygen uptake for an 8-min period. The higher the heart rate (HR), the smaller was the magnitude of the variation in R-R interval with respiration (ΔRR). When HR increased with an increase in exercise intensity, however, ΔRR tended to decrease more markedly at lower HR. On the other hand, since ΔRR generally increased linearly during the decrease in HR with a reduction in exercise intensity, ΔRR was greater during decreases in HR than during increases in HR at a similar HR. These results suggest that the contribution of the withdrawal of cardiac parasympathetic activity to increases in HR with increases in exercise intensity during sinusoidal exercise were greater at lower HR, and that the cardiac parasympathetic system was more activated during HR decreases than during HR increases at the same HR. From our findings it would seem that such complex parasympathetic HR regulaltion during sinusoidal exercise, which depends on the level of HR and the direction of the change in HR, may be influenced by factors other than the parasympathetic system, such as the cardiac sympathetic system.  相似文献

We addressed the questions (i) whether a social defeat triggers similar autonomic and behavioral responses in birds as is known from mammals and (ii) whether individuals that differ in coping style differ in their reaction to a social defeat. Adult captive male great tits (Parus major) from either of two different selection lines for coping style were used to test the effect of social defeat by an aggressive resident male conspecific on subsequent social and nonsocial behaviour, body temperature, breath rate and body mass. These parameters were measured 1 day before (baseline), immediately after and at Days 1 to 3 and 6 after the social interaction took place (Day 0). Social defeat decreased social exploration and increased body temperature substantially for at least 1 day in all birds. Breath rate and body mass were not affected. Birds belonging to the more aggressive and bolder line showed impairment in activity immediately after the social defeat. This is to our knowledge the first report showing that psychosocial stress in birds can have a similar impact as in rodents, but with a shorter recovery time. This might be due to species-specific differences in sensitivity to social stress, or to differences in the way social stress was induced.  相似文献

Heart rate (HR) is higher during dynamic arm exercise than during leg exercise at equal oxygen consumption levels, but the physiological background for this difference is not completely understood. The vagally mediated beat-to-beat R-R interval fluctuation decreases until the level of approximately 50% of maximal oxygen consumption during an incremental bicycle exercise, but the vagal responses to arm exercise are not well known. Changes in autonomic modulation of HR were compared during arm and leg exercise by measuring beat-to-beat R-R interval variability from a Poincaré plot normalized for the average R-R interval (SD1n), a measure of vagal activity, in 14 healthy male subjects (age 20 +/- 4 years) who performed graded bicycle and arm cranking tests until exhaustion. Seven of the subjects also performed the dynamic arm and leg tests after beta-adrenergic blockade (propranolol 0.2 mg kg-1 i.v.). More rapid reduction occurred in SD1n during the low-intensity level of dynamic arm exercise than during dynamic leg exercise without beta-blockade (e.g. 11 +/- 6 vs. 20 +/- 10 at the oxygen consumption level of 1.2 l min-1; P < 0.001) and with beta-blockade (e.g. 13 +/- 4 vs. 25 +/- 10 at the level of 1.0 l min-1; P < 0.05), and the mean HR was significantly higher during submaximal arm work than during leg work in both cases (e.g. during beta-blockade 81 +/- 12 vs. 74 +/- 6 beats min-1 at the level of 1.0 l min-1; P < 0.05). These data show that dynamic arm exercise results in more rapid withdrawal of vagal outflow than dynamic leg exercise.  相似文献

We examined whether the diving reflex without breath-holding (face immersion alone) increases vagal activity, as determined by heart rate variability. A group of 15 men [mean age 20 (SD 3) years, height 172 (SD 5)?cm, body mass 68 (SD 9)?kg] performed 12 trials at various breathing frequencies (5, 10, 15, 20, 30 breaths?·?min?1 and uncontrolled breath) with or without face immersion. The R-R intervals of the ECG and gas exchange variables were recorded during the 2?min of each trial. The subjects immersed their faces in 8–10°C water while breathing through a short snorkel. The subject sat in the same position either with or without face immersion. The mean R-R interval (RRmean), standard deviations (SDRR) and coefficient of variance (CVRR) of the R-R interval were calculated from the R-R intervals during 30–120 s. The face immersion significantly increased SDRR and CVRR (P<0.05), and increased RRmean (P<0.05) at 20 breaths?·?min?1. Face immersion itself had no effect on oxygen uptake, tidal volume, end-tidal O2 and CO2 partial pressures. The diving reflex without breath-holding increased the heart rate variability, indicating that face immersion alone increases vagal activity.  相似文献

Chronotropic effects of nitric oxide in the denervated human heart   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Nitric oxide synthase is expressed in the sino-atrial node and animal data suggests a direct role for nitric oxide on pacemaker activity. Study of this mechanism in intact humans is complicated by both reflex and direct effects of nitric oxide on cardiac autonomic control. Thus, we have studied the direct effects of nitric oxide on heart rate in human cardiac transplant recipients who possess a denervated donor heart. In nine patients, the chronotropic effects of systemic injection of the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor N G-monomethyl- l -arginine ( l -NMMA) (3 mg kg−1) or increasing bolus doses of the nitric oxide donor, sodium nitroprusside (SNP), were studied. Injection of l -NMMA increased mean arterial pressure by 17 ± 2 mmHg (mean ± s.e.m. ;   P < 0.001  ) and also had a significant negative chronotropic effect, lengthening the R-R interval by 54 ± 8 ms ( P < 0.001). This bradycardia was not reflex in origin since injection of the non-NO-dependent vasoconstrictor, phenylephrine (100 μg) achieved a similar rise in mean arterial pressure (18 ± 3 mmHg;   P < 0.001  ) but failed to change R-R interval duration (ΔR-R =−3 ± 4 ms). Furthermore, no change in levels of circulating adrenaline was observed with l -NMMA. Conversely, injection of sodium nitroprusside resulted in a positive chronotropic effect with a dose-dependent shortening of R-R interval duration, peak ΔR-R =−25 ± 8 ms with 130 μg ( P < 0.01). These findings indicate that nitric oxide exerts a tonic, direct, positive chronotropic influence on the denervated human heart. This is consistent with the results of animal experiments showing that nitric oxide exerts a facilitatory influence on pacemaking currents in the sino-atrial node.  相似文献

A single social defeat by a dominant conspecific induces long-term changes in several physiological and behavioral parameters in rats. These changes may represent an increased vulnerability to subsequent stress and stress-related pathology. Environmental factors, in particular possibilities for social interactions, could modulate these effects. Therefore, we assessed the influence of social environment on susceptibility for the long-term effects of social defeat. Socially housed males of an unselected strain of wild-type rats were equipped with radio-telemetry transmitters that recorded heart rate, temperature and activity. They were individually subjected to defeat and subsequently either housed alone or returned to their group. Behavioral and physiological responses to various novelty stressors were determined during a three-week period after the social defeat. Furthermore, changes in baseline behavior and physiology following defeat were studied in the rat's homecage. The results show a complex interaction between defeat and housing conditions. Depending on the parameters measured, effects were caused by both isolation alone, defeat alone or a combination of both defeat and isolation. Individual housing alone caused a characteristic hyperactive response to novelty stress. Though defeat did not affect behavioral responses, it amplified the physiological response to novelty and social housing did not attenuate this effect. However, social housing did reduce the effects of defeat on heart rate, temperature and activity in the home cage and completely prevented defeat-induced weight loss. Together these results indicate that social housing may indeed positively affect the animal's capacity to cope with stressors.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess cardiac autonomic and respiratory changes from stage 2 non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREM) to rapid eye movement (REM) sleep in subjects with idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) and controls. We tested the hypothesis that REM-related cardiorespiratory activation is altered in subjects with RBD. DESIGN: Retrospective case-control study. SETTING: University hospital-based sleep research laboratory. PATIENTS: Ten subjects with idiopathic RBD (2 women, mean age 63.4 +/- 6.2 years) and 10 sex- and age-matched controls (mean age 63.9 +/- 6.3 years). INTERVENTION: One-night polysomnography was used to assess R-R variability during NREM and REM sleep. MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: Spectral analysis of R-R interval and respiration were performed. Mean R-R interval, low-frequency (LF) and high-frequency (HF) components in both absolute and normalized units (LFnu and HFnu), and the LF/HF ratio were obtained from 5-minute electrocardiogram segments selected during NREM and REM sleep under stable conditions (stable breathing pattern, no microarousals or leg movements). Respiratory frequency was also assessed. Values obtained were then averaged for each stage and analyzed by 2 x 2 analysis of variance with group (RBD subjects and controls) as factor and state (NREM and REM) as repeated measures. RR interval, HF, and HFnu components decreased from NREM to REM in controls but did not change in RBD subjects (Interaction P < 0.05). LFnu (interaction P < 0. 001), LF/HF (interaction P < 0. 001), and respiratory frequency (interaction P < 0. 05) increased from NREM to REM sleep in controls but remained stable in RBD subjects. CONCLUSION: REM-related cardiac and respiratory responses are absent in subjects with idiopathic RBD.  相似文献

Autonomic function tests as related to age and gender in normal man   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary To obtain a comparative assessment of 5 different clinical autonomic function tests as related to age and gender in normal man, the beat-to-beat variation during deep breathing (BBV), orthostatic 30/15 R-R ratio, heart rate response to the Valsalva manoeuvre, blood pressure response to sustained handgrip and orthostatic blood pressure response were evaluated in 120 healthy subjects (60 women and 60 men) aged 22 to 92 yrs. Each of the functional parameters depending on cardiac parasympathetic integrity, i.e. the beat-to-beat variation, orthostatic 30/15 R-R ratio and Valsalva ratio, decreased (P<0.0001) progressively with increasing age. The blood pressure response to handgrip, which depends on the efferent sympathetic function, was unchanged, while the orthostatic response of systolic blood pressure, which depends on the function of the entire reflex arch, was augmented only minimally (P<0.001) with increasing age. No significant dependence on gender was noted, although blood pressure responses to handgrip tended to be slightly greater in men than women. Beat-to-beat variation expressed as the standard deviation of the mean R-R interval correlated with mean heart rate (P<0.05), while the coefficient of variation and the exspiration/inspiration ratio of beat-to-beat variation did not. The orthostatic 30/15 R-R ratio and beat-to-beat variation tended to be more closely interrelated (r=0.56 to 0.63) than any of these tests with the Valsalva ratio (r=0.51). The findings indicate that consideration of age may improve the diagnostic value of the orthostatic 30/15 R-R ratio. Beat-to-beat variation expressed as exspiration/inspiration ratio may serve as a simple, complementary test of parasympathetic cardiac integrity, and the handgrip test as a sympathetic screening procedure which is also applicable in the geriatric age group.Abbreviations BBV beat-to-beat variation - BP blood pressure - SDRR standard deviation of mean R-R interval expressed in mm - SDHR standard deviation of mean R-R interval as translated into beats per min - CVRR coefficient of variation of R-R intervals This study was supported in part by the Swiss National Science Foundation  相似文献

Repeated, intermittent exposure to psychostimulants or stressors results in long-lasting, progressive sensitization of the behavioral effects of a subsequent amphetamine (AMPH) challenge. Although behavioral sensitization has also been observed following a single drug pretreatment, the sensitizing potential of a single exposure to stress is not clear. Both drug- and stress-induced sensitization depend on an enhanced dopaminergic neurotransmission in the mesolimbic DA system. Apart from responding to rewards, this system is also involved in responding towards aversive social stimuli. Therefore, social stressors may be particularly effective in inducing cross-sensitization to stimulant drugs. We examined the time course of sensitization to the locomotor effects of the stimulant, AMPH, following a single social stressor: a social defeat. Wistar rats were exposed in a resident-intruder paradigm to an unfamiliar dominant male conspecific (Wild-Type Groningen), resulting in defeat. The locomotor effects of a subsequent AMPH challenge (0.25 or 1.0 mg/kg) were evaluated 3, 14, and 21 days later by scoring horizontal movement in an open field. AMPH had significantly larger locomotor-activating effects in animals that had been defeated 3 days earlier compared to nondefeated controls. However, this sensitized response was no longer present 14 or 21 days after defeat. Therefore, we conclude that social defeat induces short-lasting cross-sensitization to the locomotor effects of AMPH in rats, but is not sufficient for long-term sensitization. The transient enhancement of responses to dopaminergic drugs may be indicative of a temporary role of dopamine in the cascade of physiological and behavioral changes following social defeat.  相似文献

One prominent feature of adolescence is the high frequency of social behaviors, such as play. Engaging in these behaviors appears necessary for proper socio‐emotional development as social isolation during adolescence typically leads to behavioral dysfunctions in adulthood. The present experiments examined the effects of stress on social and nonsocial behaviors in group housed adolescent male rats. We found that acute restraint stress led to a complete inhibition of play (e.g., nape contacts and pins) and reduced social investigations in pre‐ (28 days), mid‐ (35 days), and late‐adolescent (42 and 49 days) animals. A follow‐up study, however, found that restraint‐induced suppression of play and social investigations was transient such that experimental animals engage in these behaviors at levels similar to those of controls 1 hr after termination of the stressor. We also found that exposure to repeated restraint stress throughout adolescence led to a decrease in social investigations, while leaving play largely unaffected. Interestingly, in all of the experiments, nonsocial behaviors (e.g., eating, drinking, grooming) were unaffected by restraint, suggesting these effects of stress are specific to social behaviors. Together, these data indicate that both acute and repeated stress significantly affect social behaviors during adolescence. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dev Psychobiol 52: 62–70, 2010  相似文献

It has been suggested that fish oil (FO) prevents weight loss caused by physiological stress such as cancer, injury, or cardiovascular disorders. Previously, we observed that a high-fat diet containing corn and coconut oil exaggerated weight loss caused by the mixed physiological and psychological stress of repeated restraint (RR). This experiment tested the effects of a high-fat diet containing FO as the predominant lipid source in rats exposed to the mixed physiological and psychological stress of either RR or sleep deprivation (SD). FO did not prevent stress-induced hypophagia or weight loss in RR or SD rats but exaggerated the negative effects of stress on body weight in SD rats by promoting loss of lean body mass. RR caused a reduction in body fat content irrespective of dietary treatment. In SD rats, both stress and FO independently reduced body fat mass. FO did not have any effect on adrenal and thymus weights during RR or SD and did not influence corticosterone levels after 1 h of RR or after 48 or 96 h of SD. In conclusion, our results suggest that high levels of dietary FO do not improve the response to stress in rats exposed to mixed stressors.  相似文献

INTRODUCTION

Noninvasive positive pressure has been used to treat several diseases. However, the physiological response of the cardiac autonomic system during bilevel positive airway pressure (Bilevel) remains unclear.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to evaluate the heart rate variability (HRV) during Bilevel in young healthy subjects.

METHODS

Twenty men underwent 10-minute R-R interval recordings during sham ventilation (SV), Bilevel of 8–15 cmH2O and Bilevel of 13–20 cmH2O. The HRV was analyzed by means of the parallel R-R interval (mean R-Ri), the standard deviation of all R-Ri (SDNN), the root mean square of the squares of the differences between successive R-Ri (rMSSD), the number of successive R-Ri pairs that differ by more than 50 milliseconds (NN50), the percentage of successive R-Ri that differ by more than 50 milliseconds (pNN50), the low frequency (LF), the high frequency (HF) and SD1 and SD2. Additionally, physiological variables, including blood pressure, breathing frequency and end tidal CO2, were collected. Repeated-measures ANOVA and Pearson correlation were used to assess the differences between the three studied conditions and the relationships between the delta of Bilevel at 13–20 cmH2O and sham ventilation of the HRV indexes and the physiological variables, respectively.

RESULTS

The R-Ri mean, rMSSD, NN50, pNN50 and SD1 were reduced during Bilevel of 13–20 cmH2O as compared to SV. An R-Ri mean reduction was also observed in Bilevel of 13–20 cmH2O compared to 8–15 cmH2O. Both the R-Ri mean and HF were reduced during Bilevel of 8–15 cmH2O as compared to SV, while the LF increased during application of Bilevel of 8–15 cmH2O as compared to SV. The delta (between Bilevel at 13–20 cmH2O and sham ventilation) of ETCO2 correlated positively with LF, HF, the LF/HF ratio, SDNN, rMSSD and SD1. Acute application of Bilevel was able to alter the cardiac autonomic nervous system, resulting in a reduction in parasympathetic activity and an increase in sympathetic activity and higher level of positive pressure can cause a greater influence on the cardiovascular and respiratory system.  相似文献
