Structural members made of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) have been attractive to engineers and researchers due to their superior mechanical properties and durability. However, existing studies were focused on the behavior of UHPC members reinforced with micro straight steel fibers at a volume fraction between 1 and 3%. There is a lack of studies on the influence of different types and amounts of fibers on the shear behavior of UHPC structural members. The objective of the study was to experimentally investigate the shear behavior of UHPC beams with macro hooked-end steel (MHS) fibers and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers, which are two of the most used fibers for high-performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composites. The shear behavior of ten large-scale non-prestressed UHPC beams was studied. The experimental parameters included the shear span-to-effective depth ratio, the fiber volume fraction, and the type of fibers. It was found that both MHS fibers and PVA fibers were effective in enhancing the shear performance of the UHPC beams whether the shear transfer mechanism was governed by arch action or beam action. Moreover, the measurement results of the average crack spacing imply the distinct difference in the fiber bridging effects of the MHS fibers and PVA fibers in the UHPC beams.  相似文献

Accumulating vast amounts of pollutants drives modern civilization toward sustainable development. Construction waste is one of the prominent issues impeding progress toward net-zero. Pollutants must be utilized in constructing civil engineering structures for a green ecosystem. On the other hand, large-scale production of industrial steel fibers (ISFs) causes significant damage to the goal of a sustainable environment. Recycled steel fibers (RSFs) from waste tires have been suggested to replace ISFs. This research critically examines RSF’s application in the mechanical properties’ improvement of concrete and mortar. A statistical analysis of dimensional parameters of RSFs, their properties, and their use in manufacturing various cement-based composites are given. Furthermore, comparative assessments are carried out among the improvements in compressive, split tensile, and flexural strengths of plain and RSF-incorporated concrete and mortar. In addition, the optimum contents of RSF for each strength property are also discussed. The influence of RSFs parameters on various strength properties of concrete and mortars is discussed. The possible applications of RSF for various civil engineering structures are reviewed. The limitations and errors noticed in previous review papers are also outlined. It is found that the maximum enhancement in compressive strength (CS), split tensile strength (STS), and flexure strength (FS) are 78%, 149%, and 157%, respectively, with the addition of RSF into concrete. RSF increased cement mortars’ CS, STS, and FS by 46%, 50.6%, and 69%, respectively. The current study encourages the building sector to use RSFs for sustainable concrete.  相似文献

The shear behavior of innovative engineered cementitious composites (ECC) members with a hybrid mix of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polypropylene (PP) fibers is examined. The overall objective of the investigation is to understand the shear behavior of ECC beams with different mono and hybrid fiber combinations without compromising the strength and ductility. Four different configurations of beams were prepared and tested, including 2.0% of PP fibers, 2.0% of PVA fibers, 2.0% of steel fibers and hybrid PVA and PP fibers (i.e., 1% PP and 1% PVA). In addition to the tests, a detailed nonlinear finite element (FE) analysis was accomplished using the commercial ABAQUS software. The validated FE model was used to perform an extensive parametric investigation to optimize the design parameters for the hybrid-fiber-reinforced ECC beams under shear. The results revealed that the use of hybrid PVA and PP fibers improved the performance by enhancing the overall strength and ductility compared to the steel and PP-fiber-based ECC beams. Incorporating hybrid fibers into ECC beams increased the critical shear crack angle, indicating the transition of a failure from a brittle diagonal tension to a ductile bending.  相似文献

Fiber reinforcement is currently most often used in floors, railway sleepers, prefabricated structural elements such as slabs, beams and tanks, and in small architecture elements. Designing elements or structures made of fiber-reinforced concrete requires knowledge of its basic mechanical parameters. In the case of concretes with metallic fibers, the literature can find many tests and standard guidelines regarding compressive, flexural, tensile strength and fracture energy. The properties of concretes with non-metallic fibers are slightly less recognized, especially concretes with new types of polymer fibers. Additionally, the lack of standardized methods of testing concrete with polymer fibers make their application much more difficult. In the article, the possibility of using the EN 14651 standard to assess the flexural tensile strength of concrete with the addition of 2.0 and 3.0 kg/m3 of synthetic fibers with different geometry and form was presented. There was a 5.5–13.5% increase in the flexural tensile strength depending on the mixture type. Moreover, in the case of fiber-reinforced concretes, the ductility was enhanced and the samples were characterized by significant residual flexural tensile strengths. Additionally, from the workability tests it was concluded that after the incorporation of fibers, the consistency class decreased by one, two or three. Nevertheless, the compressive strengths of concrete with and without fibers were very similar to each other, and varied from 58.05 to 61.31 MPa. Moreover, it was concluded that results obtained from three-point bending tests significantly differed from empirical formulas for the calculation of the flexural tensile strength of fiber-reinforced concretes with dispersed steel fibers present in the literature. As a result, the new formula determined by the authors was proposed for concrete with polymer fibers with a nominal fiber content ≤1.0% and slenderness of up to 200. It must be mentioned that the formula gave a very good agreement with studies presented in different literature positions. In addition, an attempt was made to evaluate the strengths of tested mixes in accordance with the Model Code 2010. However, it occurred that the proposed fiber-reinforced concrete mixtures would not be able to replace traditional reinforcement in a form of steel bars. Furthermore, in uniaxial tensile tests, it was not possible to determine the σ–w graphs, and received results for maximum tensile strength did not show the clear influence of fibers incorporation on concrete. Then, the fracture energy enhancement (from about 16 to 22 times) and dependencies: crack mouth opening displacement–deflection; crack mouth opening displacement–crack tip opening displacement; and crack tip opening displacement–deflection were analyzed. Finally, the results from flexural tensile tests were compared with measurements of the surface displacement field obtained through the Digital Image Correlation technique. It was concluded that this technique can be successfully used to determine the crack mouth and crack tip opening displacements with very high accuracy.  相似文献

This study examined the effect of adding synthetic fibers, that is, polypropylene (PP) and nylon (Ny), on explosive spalling and residual tensile mechanical properties of high-performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composites (HPFRCCs). Three different matrix strengths (100 MPa, 140 MPa, and 180 MPa), four different volume contents of the synthetic fibers (0%, 0.2%, 0.4%, and 0.6%), and three different exposure time (1 h, 2 h, and 3 h) based on the Internatinoal Organization for Standardization (ISO) fire curve were adopted as variables for this experiment. The experimental results revealed that the addition of synthetic fibers improved the resistance to explosive spalling induced by high-temperature, especially when PP and Ny were mixed together. For a higher matrix strength, greater volume content of the synthetic fibers was required to prevent explosive spalling, and higher residual strengths were obtained after the fire tests. An increase in the volume fraction of the synthetic fibers clearly prevented explosive spalling but did not affect the residual tensile strength. In the case of a higher matrix strength, a reduction in the strength ratio was observed with increased exposure time.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear performance of concrete beams with integrated shear reinforcements made of steel plates and rebar bent in an N shape (N-type rebar), and to evaluate the applicability of the current relevant design standards. For this purpose, four concrete beam specimens were manufactured. Four-point loading tests were performed with all the specimens. The experiments confirmed that both types of shear reinforcements had a shear-reinforcing effect (an about 60% increase in shear strength), but the N-type rebar did not exceed the nominal shear strength, probably because the rebar did not yield sufficiently. A sufficient number of steel-plate-type shear reinforcements yielded in the shear crack. When evaluating the shear performance of a new shear reinforcement, it is necessary to calculate the design strength by actually reflecting whether the shear reinforcements’ yields are due to the angle of the diagonal crack. Calculating the shear contribution based on the strain of the shear reinforcements and comparing this shear strength with those five design standards, the shear strength of the shear reinforcements were evaluated conservatively. It is considered that there will be no problem in structural safety even if the shear design is carried out according to the current design standards.  相似文献

Due to the sharp and corrosion-prone features of steel fibers, there is a demand for ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) reinforced with nonmetallic fibers. In this paper, glass fiber (GF) and the high-performance polypropylene (HPP) fiber were selected to prepare UHPC, and the effects of different fibers on the compressive, tensile and bending properties of UHPC were investigated, experimentally and numerically. Then, the damage evolution of UHPC was further studied numerically, adopting the concrete damaged plasticity (CDP) model. The difference between the simulation values and experimental values was within 5.0%, verifying the reliability of the numerical model. The results indicate that 2.0% fiber content in UHPC provides better mechanical properties. In addition, the glass fiber was more significant in strengthening the effect. Compared with HPP-UHPC, the compressive, tensile and flexural strength of GF-UHPC increased by about 20%, 30% and 40%, respectively. However, the flexural toughness indexes I5, I10 and I20 of HPP-UHPC were about 1.2, 2.0 and 3.8 times those of GF-UHPC, respectively, showing that the toughening effect of the HPP fiber is better.  相似文献

This study investigates the effects of adding different types of fibers to concrete mixes on the shear behavior of double-span fiber-reinforced concrete beams with or without shear reinforcement. As a part of the experimental study, a total of twenty-seven natural-scale double-span beams were tested. The beams, made of concrete with steel or basalt fiber, with fiber dosages of 78.5 and 5 kg/m3, were tested under shear force. The three tested series consisted of three beams with dimensions of 120 × 300 × 4150 mm, with various numbers of stirrups and contents of fiber reinforcement. During the tests, the shear capacity of the elements was determined. The values of support reactions, deflection in the middle of the span of both beam spans, deformations on the surface of the concrete member in the middle of the span in the compressive and tensile zone, and cracking (crack development and crack width) were also measured. The beams were tested using a digital image correlation (DIC) technique. Test results show that shear capacity increases in beams made of concrete with steel (1.87) or basalt fibers (1.23). Moreover, the failure mode changes from shear (brittle) to flexure-shear (less brittle). The experimental shear capacity of beams was compared with the theoretical values predicted by different design codes, i.e., fib Model Code 2010 and RILEM TC 162-TDF 2003. The results show that all the design codes underestimate the contribution of fiber-reinforced concrete beams to shear resistance and greatly overestimate the contribution of shear reinforcement.  相似文献

The need to promote sustainable civil infrastructure is one of the most important concerns in the construction industry. Geopolymer composites are one of the promising eco-friendly materials for the development of low carbon concrete. The main objective of this experimental investigation is to study the effect of hybrid fibres on the shear strength of flexural members made with ternary blend geopolymer concrete (TGPC). A total number of 27 reinforced concrete beams of size 100 mm × 150 mm × 1200 mm were cast and tested for shear. M55 grade of concrete was considered in this study. Crimped steel fibres and polypropylene fibres with an aspect ratio of 66 and 300, respectively, were used in this work. The main variables considered in this investigation involve two volume proportions of steel fibres, viz., 0.5% and 1% as well as four volume proportions of polypropylene fibres viz., 0.1%, 0.15%, 0.2% and 0.25%. The hybrid fibre-reinforced ternary blend geopolymer concrete (HTGPC) beams were compared with TGPC beams without fibres. From the test results, it was clear that incorporating hybrid fibres improved the shear strength and changed the type of failure of the beam from shear to flexure. Moreover, a method to predict the ultimate shear strength of HTGPC was proposed, and the estimated values were found to be the same as the test results.  相似文献

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) concrete is commonly used as the core material of commercial sandwich panels (CSPs). It is environmentally friendly and lightweight but has poor strength. Adding fibers can improve the microstructure of EPS concrete and reduce the weakening effect of EPS beads on the mechanical properties of concrete. An orthogonal experimental design (OED) was used in this paper to analyze the influence of length and content of polypropylene fiber (PF), glass fiber (GF), and carbon fiber (CF) on the physical and mechanical properties and micromorphology of EPS concrete. Among them, CFs have the most apparent impact on concrete and produce the most significant improvements in all properties. According to the requirements of the flexural performance of CSPs, the splitting tensile strength was taken as the optimization index, and the predicted optimal combination (OC) of EPS concrete with fibers was selected. The variations in the material properties, mechanical properties, and microstructure with age were analyzed. The results show that with increasing age, the dry density, compressive strength, and splitting tensile strength of concrete are markedly improved relative to those of the CSP core material and the control case (CC), and even the degree of hydration is improved.  相似文献

The concrete industry has long been adding discrete fibers to cementitious materials to compensate for their (relatively) low tensile strengths and control possible cracks. Extensive past studies have identified effective strategies to mix and utilize the discrete fibers, but as the fiber material properties advance, so do the properties of the cementitious composites made with them. Thus, it is critical to have a state-of-the-art understanding of not only the effects of individual fiber types on various properties of concrete, but also how those properties are influenced by changing the fiber type. For this purpose, the current study provides a detailed review of the relevant literature pertaining to different fiber types considered for fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) applications with a focus on their capabilities, limitations, common uses, and most recent advances. To achieve this goal, the main fiber properties that are influential on the characteristics of cementitious composites in the fresh and hardened states are first investigated. The study is then extended to the stability of the identified fibers in alkaline environments and how they bond with cementitious matrices. The effects of fiber type on the workability, pre- and post-peak mechanical properties, shrinkage, and extreme temperature resistance of the FRC are explored as well. In offering holistic comparisons, the outcome of this study provides a comprehensive guide to properly choose and utilize the benefits of fibers in concrete, facilitating an informed design of various FRC products.  相似文献

This work sheds light on the first steps towards using glass fiber waste for semi-structural applications. This work aims to improve the properties of random flax fiber composites by incorporating waste glass fibers (WGF) obtained from the fiber production line. The waste glass fibers were incorporated as a core structure between the flax layers to form a hybrid composite. Two routes of manufacturing viz. vacuum infusion and autoclave were used to identify the optimum route to incorporate the WGF in flax fiber composites. The quality of composites was investigated in terms of residual void content and thickness uniformity. Residual void content was identified to be directly proportional to the WGF content in the composites. With the increase in WGF content, the flexural and impact properties were increased by 47% and 117%, respectively, indicating a positive hybridization effect. Furthermore, a global warming potential indicator was identified to be small, indicating the eco-friendliness of these composites.  相似文献

Designing bending elements made of fiber composites requires knowledge of the residual strengths. Residual strengths determined according to PN-EN 14651, regardless of the type of matrix and the fibers used, are characterized by a very-high coefficient of variation, about 30%. The variability of this feature is so large that the normal distribution adopted in statistical analyses, which is consistent for compressive strength or tensile strength, may, in the case of residual strengths, result in a significant overdesign of the elements. Therefore, the article proposes a novel method of determining the residual strength with the use of centrally bent square plates simply supported at the perimeter. The coefficient of variation of this characteristic in the case of plate testing is about 8%.  相似文献

Due to their lightweight potential and good eco-balance, thermoplastic hybrid composites with natural fiber reinforcement have long been used in the automotive industry. A good alternative to natural fibers is wood fibers, which have similar properties but are also a single-material solution using domestic raw materials. However, there has been hardly any research into wood fibers in thermoplastic back-injected hybrid composites. This article compares the bond strength of an injection molded rib from polypropylene (PP) and wood fibers to different non-wovens. The non-wovens consisted of wood fibers (spruce) or alternatively natural fibers (kenaf, hemp), both with a polypropylene matrix. Pull-off and instrumented puncture impact tests show that, given similar parameters, the natural and wood-fiber-hybrid composites exhibit very similar trends in bond strength. Further tests using viscosity measurements, microscopy, and computed tomography confirm the results. Wood-fiber-reinforced thermoplastic hybrid composites can thus compete with the natural fiber composites in terms of their mechanical behavior and therefore present a good alternative in technical semi-structural applications.  相似文献

Perfobond rib (PBL) shear connectors, made up of the perforated steel plates with the penetrating rebars passing through the holes, are extensively adopted in steel-concrete composite structures for their excellent performance. The adequate understanding of mechanical properties for PBL connectors is of great significance for their reasonable design. In this study, a push out experiment, including 12 specimens with the parameters of concrete strength, diameter of penetrating rebars and the number of holes on perforated steel plate, was performed to explore the mechanical behavior of PBL connectors with steel fiber high strength concrete (SFHSC). The experimental results showed that the shear capacity of the PBL connectors increased with the increase in concrete strength, diameter of the penetrating rebars and the number of holes. Furthermore, a general prediction formula for the shear capacity of PBL connectors was developed, which considers the shear contribution of concrete dowels, concrete end-bearing, interfacial bonding between the perforated steel plates and concrete and the penetrating rebars as well as the enhancement effect of steel fibers. The prediction results of the equation are in good agreement with the experimental data and could provide a reference for the design of PBL connectors.  相似文献

The aim of the article is to analyze the influence of short coir, glass and carbon fiber admixture on the mechanical properties of fly ash-based geopolymer, such as: flexural and compressive strength. Glass fiber and carbon fibers have been chosen due to their high mechanical properties. Natural fibers have been chosen because of their mechanical properties as well as for the sake of comparison between their properties and the properties of the artificial ones. Fourth series of fly ash-based geopolymers for each fiber was cast: 1, 2, and 5% by weight of fly ash and one control series without any fibers. Each series of samples were tested on flexural and compressive strength after 7, 14, and 28 days. Additionally, microstructural analysis was carried out after 28 days. The results have shown an increase in compressive strength for composites with fibers—an improvement in properties between 25.0% and 56.5% depending on the type and amount of fiber added. For bending strength, a clear increase in the strength value is visible for composites with 1 and 2% carbon fibers (62.4% and 115.6%). A slight increase in flexural strength also occurred for 1% addition of glass fiber (4.5%) and 2% addition of coconut fibers (5.4%). For the 2% addition of glass fibers, the flexural strength value did not change compared to the value obtained for the matrix material. For the remaining fiber additions, i.e., 5% glass fiber as well as 1 and 5% coconut fibers, the flexural strength values deteriorated. The results of the research are discussed in a comparative context and the properties of the obtained composites are juxtaposed with the properties of the standard materials used in the construction industry.  相似文献

In the last decade, synthetic fiber, as a reinforcing specialist, has been mainly used in polymer matrix composites (PMC’s) to provide lightweight materials with improved stiffness, modulus, and strength. The significant feature of PMC’s is their reinforcement. The main role of the reinforcement is to withstand the load applied to the composite. However, in order to fulfill its purpose, the reinforcements must meet some basic criteria such as: being compatible with the matrix, making chemical or adhesion bonds with the matrix, having properties superior to the matrix, presenting the optimal orientation in composite and, also, having a suitable shape. The current review reveals a detailed study of the current progress of synthetic fibers in a variety of reinforced composites. The main properties, failure modes, and applications of composites based on synthetic fibers are detailed both according to the mentioned criteria and according to their types (organic or inorganic fibers). In addition, the choice of classifications, applications, and properties of synthetic fibers is largely based on their physical and mechanical characteristics, as well as on the synthesis process. Finally, some future research directions and challenges are highlighted.  相似文献

This study addresses the application of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers to improve the performance of lightweight cement composites with pozzolans. Blended cement mixes based on expanded glass granules were modified with PVA fibers (Type A: Ø40 µm, L = 8 mm and Type B: Ø200 µm, L = 12 mm). The following research methods were used to analyse the effect of the fibers on the structure of cement matrix and physical-mechanical properties of lightweight composite: SEM, XRD, DTG, calorimetry tests, and standard test methods of physical and mechanical properties. Results from the tests showed that a denser layer of hydrates was formed around the PVA fiber and the amounts of portlandite, CSH, and CASH formed in the specimens with PVA were found to be higher. PVA fibers of Type A accelerated hydration of the cement paste, slightly increased the compressive strength of the lightweight composite, but had no significant effect on the values of density, ultrasonic pulse velocity and flexural strength. The shrinkage of cement composite was significantly reduced using both types of PVA fiber and both types of PVA fibers increased the fracture energy of lightweight cement composite with expanded granules.  相似文献

The interfacial interface between fibers and matrix plays a key role for epoxy matrix composites and short recycled randomly arranged fibers. This study used short recycled carbon fiber (RCF) as a filler. Plasma treatment was used for carbon fiber surface treatment. This treatment was performed using radio (RF) and microwave (MW) frequencies at the same pressure and atmosphere. Appropriate chemical modification of the fiber surfaces helps to improve the wettability of the carbon fibers and, at the same time, allows the necessary covalent bonds to form between fibers and the epoxy matrix. The effect of the plasma treatment was analyzed and confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and wettability measurements. Composite samples filled with recycled carbon fibers with low concentrations (1 wt%, 2.5 wt% and 5 wt%) and high concentrations (20 wt% and 30 wt%) were made from selected treated fibers. The mechanical properties (impact toughness, 3PB) were analyzed on these samples. It was found that the modulus of elasticity and bending stress increase with the increasing content of recycled carbon fibers. A more significant change in impact strength occurred in samples with low concentration.  相似文献

An important goal to achieve sustainable development is to use raw materials that are easily recyclable and renewable, locally available, and eco-friendly. Sheep wool, composed of 60% animal protein fibers, 10% fat, 15% moisture, 10% sheep sweat, and 5% contaminants on average, is an easily recyclable, easily renewable, and environmentally friendly source of raw material. In this study, slump testing, compressive and flexural strengths, ultrasonic pulse velocity, sorptivity, and chloride penetration tests were investigated to assess the influence of wool fibers on the strength and transport properties of concrete composites. Ordinary Portland cement was used to make five concrete mixes incorporating conventional wool fibers (WFs) ranging from 0.5 to 2.5% and a length of 70 mm. The wool fibers were modified (MWFs) via a pre-treatment technique, resulting in five different concrete compositions with the same fiber content. The addition of WF and MWF to fresh concrete mixes resulted in a decrease in slump values. The compressive strength of concrete was reduced when wool fibers were added to the mix. The MWF mixes, however, achieved compressive strength values of more than 30 MPa after a 90-day curing period. Furthermore, by including both WF and MWF, the flexural strength was higher than that of plain concrete. In addition, adding fibers with volume fractions of up to 2% reduced the concrete composite’s sorptivity rate and chloride penetration depths for both WF and MWF content mixes. Consequently, biomass waste like sheep wool could be recycled and returned to the field following the circular economy and waste valorization principles.  相似文献
