We were interested to read the paper by Tim Mole (J Audiov Media Med 1990; 13: 83-6). With reference to the corneal changes detected with specular microscopy following trauma, for which our paper is cited (Brooks et al., 1988), we would point out that our studies showed red blood cells on the posterior surface of the corneal endothelium using the relief mode, not in the cornea. The major change we found in the corneal endothelium was subendothelial oedema, which usually cleared leaving a relatively normal endothelial mosaic following resolution of the hyphaema and immediate contusion effects.
