BackgroundSurgery is currently the only treatment option for patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). Recently, minimally invasive parathyroidectomy (MIP) has begun to replace traditional bilateral neck exploration (BNE).ObjectiveThe aim of this study is to compare the results of parathyroidectomies performed in our hospital over the past decade that were guided by intra-operative parathyroid hormone (IOPTH) sampling or frozen section (FS) analysis.Material and methodsData on 697 patients who underwent parathyroidectomies in the Department of Endocrine Surgery, Dokuz Eylul University between January 2005 and 2018 were included in this study. Patients with malignancies other than thyroid papillary microcarcinoma and parathyroid cancer were excluded from the study.ResultsThe concomitant use of neck ultrasound (US) and technetium 99m Sestamibi (99mTc MIBI) scintigraphy successfully localized the hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands in nearly 96% of cases. As compared with the IOPTH group, the operation time was longer in the FS group (p < 0.001), and the need for postoperative calcium (Ca) supplementation was higher (p < 0.001). The duration of hospitalization (days) was significantly higher in the FS group (4.2 ± 3.4 vs. 2.6 ± 1.9) as compared with that in the IOPTH group (p < 0.001). In addition, the recurrence rate in the FS group was significantly higher than that in the IPOTH group (p = 0.002).ConclusionIOPTH sampling is a safe and effective method when performed by experienced surgeons and with appropriate preoperative screening. This study emphasizes that IOPTH sampling. We believe that the success in parathyroid surgery is due to three factors: correct indication, accurate localization and experienced surgeon.  相似文献

Conclusion: When the parapharyngeal space is infected, concurrent involvement of other spaces is likely, and involvement of multiple deep neck spaces is a key risk factor for abscess formation.

Objectives: Deep neck infection is treated with antibiotics when abscesses have not yet been formed. However, in some cases, abscesses will form later and surgical drainage is warranted. This study retrospectively examined which cases were less likely to achieve cure, to clarify the limitations of conservative treatment for deep neck cellulitis.

Patients and methods: Subjects comprised 19 patients with deep neck cellulitis who initially underwent conservative treatment with antibiotics. Patients were divided into two groups: Group A (n?=?7), patients who recovered by conservative treatment; and Group B (n?=?12), patients who did not recover and underwent surgical drainage. Age, state of DM control, etiology, treatment, spaces infected, and duration of hospitalization were investigated.

Results: The number of infected spaces was one in all Group A patients, whereas Group B showed multiple infected spaces in all except two cases. In particular, among the 10 cases with parapharyngeal space infection, eight (80%) showed multiple lesions.  相似文献

IntroductionDeep neck infections (DNI) are potentially lethal processes and are susceptible to severe complications. This study shows an increment of the incidence and investigated the cause. More than 30% of cases are idiopathic, but they are commonly related to a dental or oropharyngeal infection.Material and methodsWe present 286 consecutive cases in a retrospective 11-year study. We analysed the clinical picture, antecedents and concurrent diseases, and diagnostic and therapeutic approaches that could be related to developing a DNI.ResultsA mayor increase in DNI incidence in our setting was seen in the last few years. The mayor complications were mediastinitis, septic shock with disseminated intravascular coagulation syndrome, necrotising fasciitis and acute respiratory failure. A lower cranial nerve palsy that develops into dysphagia and leukoencephalopathy are the most frequent sequela. We found 10% of aspiration pneumonia. Mortality in adults was 5.9% and in children, 6.2%.ConclusionsDeep neck infections constitute a medical and surgical emergency. Severe complications may arise in a short time. We must be vigilant to alarm symptoms such as dyspnea, stridor, pain in the floor of the mouth, sialohrrea, trismus, etc.Improvements in antibiotic therapy, diagnostic imaging and critical patient support modalities have decreased mortality and there is a better prognosis, with complications being identified and treated earlier.  相似文献

BackgroundDeep neck infection (DNI) is a life-threatening condition of the deep neck spaces with potential to obstruct the airway. Aspiration pneumonia (AP), which results from aspiration of colonized oropharyngeal or upper gastrointestinal contents, is a respiratory infection that affects the lungs, wherein the air sacs are filled with purulent fluid. The cooccurrence of these two diseases can cause severe damage to the respiratory system, leading to morbidity and mortality. However, the risk factors for concurrent DNI and AP have not yet been investigated. This study aimed to address this issue.MethodsA total of 561 DNI patients were enrolled in this study between June 2016 and December 2021. Among these patients, 26 had concurrent DNI and AP at the time of diagnosis. Relevant clinical variables were assessed.ResultsIn the univariate analysis, age > 60 years (OR = 3.593, 95% CI: 1.534–8.414, p = 0.002), C-reactive protein (OR = 1.005, 95% CI: 1.001–1.008, p = 0.003), involvement of ≥3 spaces (OR = 4.969, 95% CI: 2.051–12.03, p < 0.001), and retropharyngeal space involvement (OR = 4.546, 95% CI: 1.878–11.00, p < 0.001) were significant risk factors for concurrent DNI and AP. In the multivariate analysis, age > 60 years (OR = 2.766, 95% CI: 1.142–6.696, p = 0.024) and retropharyngeal space involvement (OR = 3.006, 95% CI: 1.175–7.693, p = 0.021) were independent risk factors for concurrent DNI and AP.The group with concurrent DNI and AP had longer hospital stays (p < 0.001) and lower rates of incision and drainage (I&D) open surgery (p = 0.020) than the group with DNI alone. There were no significant differences in pathogens (p > 0.05) between the groups.ConclusionsBoth DNI and AP can independently compromise the airway, and the concurrence of these two conditions makes airway protection more difficult. Age > 60 years and retropharyngeal space involvement were independent risk factors for the concurrence of DNI and AP. The group with concurrent DNI and AP had longer hospital stays and lower rates of I&D open surgery than the group with DNI alone. There were no differences in DNI pathogens according to concurrent AP status.  相似文献

Introduction: The significant pathogens in acute epiglottitis (AE) are poorly defined in the post Haemophilus influenza type b-vaccine era. Furthermore, there is a lack of clinical evaluations of antibiotic regimens in patients with AE. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of empiric intravenous ampicillin in the treatment of patients with AE.

Materials &; methods: All patients admitted with AE to the Ear-Nose-Throat Department, Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark, from 2001 to 2015 were included.

Results: In total, 103 (51 males) patients were included in the study. The median duration of hospitalization was four days. There was no statistical significant difference between patients initially treated with intravenous ampicillin (n?=?83) or other antibiotics (n?=?20) (p?=?.26). The antibiotic regimen was altered during admission in 11% of patients, without significant difference between antibiotic groups (ampicillin 10% vs non-ampicillin 15%, p?=?.44). Complications potentially related to insufficient antibiotic treatment were observed in four (5%) patients initially treated with ampicillin, but in none of the patients initially treated with antibiotics other than ampicillin (p?=?1.00). Throat swab cultures and blood cultures frequently yielded negative results.

Conclusions: Intravenous ampicillin is efficient as empiric antibiotic therapy for AE patients, leading to a quick recovery and low complication rates.  相似文献

Background: Deep neck infections (DNIs) are often clinically challenging, and may be life-threatening.

Objective: The present retrospective study aimed to identify panels of clinical, laboratory, radiological, and microbiological parameters that could identify patients with DNIs at higher risk of complications or long-term hospitalization.

Materials and methods: The investigation concerned 301 consecutive patients with DNIs treated at our institution between 2000 and 2014.

Results: The discriminatory power of a combination of two variables (unknown origin of the infection and the need for surgical treatment) in terms of deep neck infection complications occurrence featured an AUC (ROC) of 0.6701. The power of a panel of four variables (age, leukocyte count, need for surgical treatment, days elapsing from hospitalization to surgical procedure) to identify DNIs necessitating long-term hospitalization featured an AUC (ROC) of 0.7929.

Conclusion: Using the scale proposed by Hosmer and Lemeshow, the four-variable panel showed an amply acceptable, nearly excellent discriminatory power for long-term hospitalization.

Significance: Although this panel achieved promising results for prognostic purposes, other parameters potentially capable of predicting the outcome of DNIs and orienting treatment decisions need to be investigated.  相似文献

Arthritis may affect the larynx and produce symptoms such as hoarseness and vocal fatigue.ObjectiveThis paper aimed to evaluate the laryngeal manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis.MethodsThis is prospective study assessed 27 patients with rheumatoid arthritis with the aid of videolaryngostroboscopy, auditory-perceptual analysis of the speech using the GIRBAS scale, acoustic analysis and the Voice Handicap Index questionnaire.ResultsNineteen patients had laryngeal complaints, the main ones being intermittent dysphonia and sensation of a foreign body in the throat. The most frequent laryngoscopical finding was overlapping arytenoids. Three patients had low pitch, nine patients had mild dysphonia and roughness. Median acoustic measures were: F0, 198.39 Hz; Jitter, 0.815; Shimmer, 4.915; and NHR, 0.144. Regarding the Voice Handicap Index, the median score was zero in all domains. There was a statistically significant correlation between voice complaints and the domains of this index. Functional classes were significantly correlated to: overlapping arytenoids (p = 0.001), PPQ (p = 0.0257), Shimmer (p = 0.0295), APQ (p = 0.0195), and the VHI physical (p = 0.0227) and total domains (p = 0.0425).ConclusionLaryngeal complaints were reported by 70.4% of the patients and laryngoscopical alterations were observed in 48% of the subjects. Voice acoustic evaluation and self-perception were altered.  相似文献

ObjectivesSecondary solid tumors can occur after the treatment of hematological malignancies and are associated with a poor prognosis. We evaluated the survival outcomes of patients with second primary head and neck cancers according to the site of cancer origin, type of hematological malignancy, and age.Materials and methodsWe enrolled all patients who underwent surgery for second primary head and neck cancer and were previously treated for hematological malignancy between 1997 and 2020. We analyzed the survival outcomes of patients with second primary head and neck cancer, and compared them with 3126 de novo head and neck cancer patients diagnosed during the same period at our hospital.ResultsThe 5-year overall survival (OS) rate was significantly worse for second primary head and neck cancer patients than de novo cancer patients (52.0 % and 77.9 %, respectively; p = 0.04) and those results were similarly observed in second primary oral cavity cancer (33.3 % and 75.7 %, respectively; p < 0.01). Patients with myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukemia showed significantly worse 5-year OS rate than those with other types of hematological malignancies (p = 0.036). Multivariate analysis showed that bone marrow transplantation (BMT) was a risk factor for the recurrence of head and neck cancers (odds ratio = 6.635, p = 0.042).ConclusionPatients with second primary head and neck cancer, particularly of the oral cavity, had a worse prognosis than patients with de novo head and neck cancer. BMT predicts recurrence in second primary head and neck cancer patients.  相似文献

IntroductionRegional metastases of cutaneous head and neck squamous cell carcinoma occur in approximately 5 % of cases, being the most important prognostic factor in survival, currently with no distinction between parotid and neck metastasis.ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the prognostic features among patients with head and neck cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma exhibiting regional metastasis.MethodsA retrospective analysis of patients with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma who underwent parotidectomy and/or neck dissection from 2011 to 2018 at a single institution tertiary center was performed. Patient demographics, clinical, surgical and pathological information, adjuvant treatments, and outcome at last follow-up were collected. Outcomes included disease recurrence and death due to the disease. Prognostic value of clinic pathological features associated with disease-specific survival was obtained.ResultsThirty-eight cases of head and neck cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma with parotid and/or neck metastasis were identified. Overall, 18 (47.3 %) patients showed parotid metastasis alone, 12 (31.5 %) exhibited neck metastasis alone and 8 (21.0 %) had both. A primary tumor in the parotid zone (Hazard Ratio ? HR = 5.53; p = 0.02) was associated with improved disease-specific survival. Poorer disease-specific survival was observed in patients with higher primary tumor diameter (HR = 1.54; p = 0.002), higher depth of invasion (HR = 2.89; p = 0.02), invasion beyond the subcutaneous fat (HR = 5.05; p = 0.002), neck metastasis at first presentation (HR = 8.74; p < 0.001), number of positive lymph nodes (HR = 1.25; p = 0.004), and higher TNM stages (HR = 7.13; p = 0.009). Patients presenting with isolated parotid metastasis during all follow-ups had better disease-specific survival than those with neck metastasis or both (HR = 3.12; p = 0.02).ConclusionHead and neck cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma with parotid lymph node metastasis demonstrated better outcomes than cases with neck metastasis.  相似文献

Patients with head and neck cancer have to deal with the impact of treatment on its functional and aesthetic aspects, and its self-report enables improvements in clinical and social support.ObjectiveTo evaluate the quality of life of patients dealing with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck.MethodA prospective analytical study. Twenty nine patients with mean age of 57 years answered at three stages: onset, middle and end of treatment, the questionnaires: Quality of Life Core Questionnaire - Cancer 30 and the Quality of Life Questionnaire - Head and Neck, the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer. We used the Friedman test at: 0.05.ResultsThere were high mean values concerning physical, cognitive, social functions; improvements in general health and social function decline during treatment; and a significant difference in taste and smell (p = 0.020), swallowing (p = 0.040), cough (p = 0.013) and weight loss (p = 0.011).ConclusionThere was a significant reduction in the quality of life for some common symptoms resulting from cancer treatment, which was not seen in the evaluation of the aspects related to physical, cognitive and social functions, and general health.  相似文献

Deep neck abscess is very rare in neonatal period. We reported a deep neck abscess caused by methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus infection (MSSA) in a neonate. A 10-day male infant was admitted to our neonatal unit with the complaints of fever, irritability, and refused to food intake. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed as an abscess in the neck. Needle aspiration from abscess revealed pus. Antibiotics and drainage were applied. We also reviewed the neonatal deep neck abscess reported in English literature and clinical presentation, risk factors, causing microorganisms, treatment, complication and outcome of deep neck abscesses were discussed.  相似文献

ObjectivesThe study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics, diagnosis, and treatment of orbital cellulitis in children in Shenzhen, China, and to improve the experience of antibiotic therapy for the treatment of orbital cellulites.MethodsThis retrospective study reviewed data from 20 children admitted to Shenzhen Children's Hospital between January 2009 and December 2013, with a diagnosis of nasal orbital cellulitis, severe enough to warrant hospitalization. Thirteen subjects (65%) were male and 7 (35%) were female. The median age was 3.5 years (2 months–7.2 years). The relationship between serum C-reactive protein (CRP), white blood cell count, and length of hospitalization were analyzed. The patients were categorized into 2 groups according to treatment: Those treated with a combination of cefoperazone plus sulbactam sodium vs. those treated with other antibiotic treatment regimens.ResultsLevels of serum CRP (29.8 ± 22.0 mg/L) at the time of admission were positively correlated with length of hospitalization (6.3 ± 4.1 days, r = 0.46, P < 0.05). The length of time necessary for CRP levels to return to normal range after admission (3.4 ± 1.8 days) was also significantly correlated length of hospitalization ((6.3 ± 4.1)days) (r = 0.81, P < 0.01). The hospital days whose CRP can be decreased to normal within 3 days (4.3 ± 1.7 days) after antibiotic treatment were significantly shorter than the others (9.1 ± 5 days) (t = 2.61, P < 0.05). The length of hospitalization (4.3 ± 1.9 days) for patients (n = 12) receiving combined cefoperazone and sulbactam sodium antibiotic treatment was significantly shorter than the length of stay (9.3 ± 4.7 days) for those patients (n = 8) treated with other antibiotic regimens (t = 2.83, P < 0.05). Bacterial pathogens were identified in 4 patients (20%), including 3 cases of Staphylococcus aureus and 1 case of Streptococcus anginosus. Acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) were found in the three pus cultures.ConclusionEarly efficient antibiotic treatment over the first three days may shorten the course of nasal orbital cellulitis and potentially prevent the formation of orbital abscesses. Clinical factors that were significantly related to patient recovery included improved clinical signs and normalization of blood CRP levels. Our results also indicate that combined cefoperazone and sulbactam sodium is effective and should be recommended for the treatment of pediatric orbital cellulitis.  相似文献

IntroductionEndoscopic tympanoplasty is a minimally invasive surgery that may be performed via a solely transcanal approach. The use of endoscopes in otologic procedures has been increasing worldwide. The endoscopic approach facilitates the transcanal tympanoplasty, even in patients having the narrow external ear canal with an anterior wall protrusion.ObjectivesThe present study aimed to compare the surgical and audiological outcomes of endoscopic transcanal and conventional microscopic approach in Type 1 tympanoplasty.MethodsThe graft success rates, hearing outcomes, complications, and duration of surgery in patients who underwent endoscopic and microscopic tympanoplasty between October 2015 and April 2018 were retrospectively analysed.ResultsGraft success rates were 94.8 per cent and 92.9 per cent for the endoscopic and microscopic group, respectively (p > 0.05). Postoperative air-bone gap values were improved significantly in both groups (p < 0.001). The average duration of surgery was significantly shorter in the endoscopic group (mean 34.9 min) relative to the microscopic group (mean 52.7 min) (p < 0.05). The average hospitalization period was 5.2 h (range 3–6 h) in Group I whereas it was 26.1 h (range 18–36 h) in Group II (p < 0.05).ConclusionThe endoscopic transcanal tympanoplasty approach is a reasonable alternative to conventional microscopic tympanoplasty in the treatment of chronic otitis media, with comparable graft success rates and hearing outcomes.  相似文献

PurposeHead and neck paragangliomas are slow growing tumors where observation has become more widely accepted. Tumor growth rate as well as predictors of increased tumor growth were analyzed with the goal to identify factors to better predict disease progression and counsel patients.Materials and methodsMulti-institutional retrospective cohort study from 2011 to 2020.Results130 head and neck paragangliomas in 125 patients were analyzed. 38 were observed (30.4%), 16 radiated (12.8%), and 71 underwent surgery (56.8%). Surgical patients were significantly younger (p = 0.038) and with more genetically mediated paragangliomas (p = 0.026). Significantly more patients were asymptomatic in the observation group (p = 0.005). Of the 39 observed tumors, 43.6% (n = 17) grew with a tumor doubling time of 5.67 years. More than half of the observed paragangliomas had no growth. When examining symptoms postoperatively and at follow-up, the surgical cohort had significantly more worsening symptoms (p = 0.007) and new cranial neuropathies (p = 0.031).ConclusionsHead and neck paragangliomas have slow growth rates if they grow at all. Patients in the surgical cohort had more clinical symptoms at presentation and worsening postoperative symptoms.  相似文献

ObjectiveNasal obstruction is considered to be one of the risk factors for obstructive sleep apnea, together with a high arched narrow palate, elongated uvula, malocclusion, and tongue and tonsil size. The impact of nasal obstruction on sleep apnea is controversial, however, and its relation to sleep quality is rarely discussed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the independent effect of nasal obstruction on sleep quality.MethodsSixty-nine patients with nasal obstructive symptoms and without sleep apnea episodes were enrolled from September 2018 to August 2019, and compared before and after surgery with thirty-four patients who had benign diseases of the thyroid or parathyroid as a control group, to investigate effects of surgery. Sleep quality was evaluated using the Japanese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-J). All cases were reassessed at three months after surgery.ResultsThe postoperative PSQI scores in the nasal surgery group were significantly lower than the preoperative scores (p < 0.001). In contrast, there was no statistically significance difference between the pre- and postoperative PSQI scores in the neck surgery group. Difference of PSQI scores before and after surgery in the nasal surgery group was significantly higher than the neck surgery group.ConclusionsThis double-arm study suggests that reduction of nasal disfunction with nasal surgery contributes significantly to sleep quality, in patients who may not have noticed their impaired quality of sleep previously because of their long-term nasal symptoms.  相似文献

IntroductionRecurrent epistaxis is a common medical problem faced by ENT specialists, emergency physicians, and pediatricians. The facts that many treatment modalities are being searched and no single treatment method is universally accepted yet support this information.ObjectiveWe aimed to compare the clinical efficacy of topical antiseptic ointment, topical decongestant ointment and chemical cauterization treatments, which are frequently used in recurrent anterior epistaxis, both singly and in combination.Material-methodsBetween August 2017 and February 2018, 137 patients who were diagnosed with recurrent anterior epistaxis were randomly divided into 5 groups. group I received topical antiseptic ointment, group II received topical decongestant ointment, group III received chemical cauterization, group IV received topical antiseptic ointment + chemical cauterization and group V received topical decongestant ointment + chemical cauterization treatment. All patients were phoned 2 weeks and 1 month after the treatment and questioned about the presence (failure) or absence (success) of at least 1 episode of epistaxis. Patients with comorbid diseases were excluded. Treatment success was statistically analysed.ResultsThere was no significant difference (p > 0.05) between the groups in the success rate at 15th day after treatment. Group IV and group V had higher success rates at 30th day after treatment compared with group I and group II (p < 0.05). In group III 30th day treatment success was not different from the other 4 groups (p > 0.05).ConclusionAlthough the number of patients who improved with chemical cauterization (group III) was higher in our study, no significant difference was observed in single treatment modalities (group I?III) at 14th day and 30th day after treatment. Although no statistically significant difference was observed between combined treatments (group IVV) and single treatments (group I?III) in the 2nd week after treatment, combined treatments were significantly more effective in the 1st month.  相似文献

IntroductionThe mandibular advancement device (MAD) is a option to treat patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS).ObjectiveTo assess the influence of upper airway abnormalities on the success of and adherence to MAD in patients with OSAS.MethodsProspective study with 30 patients with mild to moderate OSAS and indications for MAD. The protocol included questionnaires addressing sleep and nasal complaints, polysomnography, and upper airway assessment. The analyzed parameters of patients who showed therapeutic success and failure and those who exhibited good and poor treatment adherence were compared.Results28 patients completed the protocol; 64.3% responded successfully to treatment with MAD, and 60.7% exhibited good adherence to treatment. Factors associated with greater success rates were younger age (p = 0.02), smaller cervical circumference (p = 0.05), and lower AHI at baseline (p = 0.05). There was a predominance of patients without nasal abnormalities among patients treated successfully compared to those with treatment failure (p = 0.04), which was not observed in relation to adherence. Neither pharyngeal nor facial skeletal abnormalities were significantly associated with either therapeutic success or adherence.ConclusionMAD treatment success was significantly lower among patients with nasal abnormalities; however, treatment adherence was not influenced by the presence of upper airway or facial skeletal abnormalities.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe rationale of the study was to examine the association between chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and COVID-19 hospitalization.Study designRetrospective cohort study.SettingCleveland Clinic hospital inpatient and outpatient.MethodsA retrospective chart review of patients that were tested for COVID-19 at Cleveland Clinic. The study took place between March 8, 2020 and May 15, 2020.ResultsFrom a total of 23,282 Patients that underwent SARS-CoV-2 testing, 996 COVID-19 negative and 998 COVID-19 positive patients were included in the analysis. COVID-19 positive patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) were at higher risk for hospitalization compared to patients without CRS (39.2% vs 25.7%, p = 0.0486). There was no significant difference between the two groups in relation to ICU admission, mechanical ventilation, and death, After adjustment for covariates, our multivariate analysis showed that patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) were approximately 3.46 (OR = 3.19, 95% CI (1.12–10.68)) times more likely to be hospitalized compared to patients that have no CRS.ConclusionOur results demonstrated that patients with chronic rhinosinusitis are associated with higher risk of COVID-19 hospitalization, albeit no increased risk of mortality.  相似文献

IntroductionTongue cancer is one of the most common subtypes of head and neck cancer. The aggressive effects of treatment cause aesthetic, psychosocial and functional deficits, especially dysphagia, which affects patient quality of life. Rehabilitation, which is essential for functional maximum recovery, helps patients deal with new and altered structures and has a positive impact on quality of life.ObjectiveTo verify the impact of speech therapy on swallowing quality of life in tongue cancer patients after treatment.MethodsThis parallel randomized clinical trial was conducted at a public hospital in Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil. Before and after the intervention, a quality of life questionnaire (the Deglutition Handicap Index) was employed, dysphagia severity was assessed with fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, and the Functional Oral Intake Scale carried out. The experimental group underwent four-week sessions of speech therapy over one month, while the control group received the institution’s usual follow-up.ResultsThirty individuals treated for tongue cancer were divided into a study and a control group. Deglutition Handicap Index scores decreased significantly (approximately 40 points) (p < 0.001) after the intervention in the study group. There was a significant correlation between improved quality of life, reduced dysphagia severity and increased in Functional Oral Intake Scale scores (p < 0.001).ConclusionAfter speech therapy, quality of life scores related to deglutition and dysphagia severity improved in patients treated for tongue cancer.  相似文献
