The purpose of this study was to determine whether urinary excretion of hydroxylysine (HO-Lys) is increased following prolonged, predominantly downhill running. Such an increase would be evidence of exercise-induced collagen damage. Each of ten young men performed a treadmill running test to determine VO2peak (an approximation of VO2max) followed by 60 min of intermittent running on -10% slope. Total urine excreted from 48 h pre-exercise to 96h post-exercise was collected in 8-h samples for measurement of HO-Lys. In addition, both urinary 3-methylhistidine (3-MeHis) excretion and serum creatine kinase (SCK) activity were measured as indicators of muscle tissue damage. In no sampling period was post-exercise HO-Lys excretion altered compared with pre-exercise (e.g., pre-exercise: 82.2 +/- 9.6 mumol.24 h-1, mean +/- SE; 51.0 +/- 3.7 mumol.g creatinine-1; post-exercise: 72.9 +/- 2.0 mumol.24 h-1; 47.0 +/- 1.5 mumol.g creatinine-1). SCK activity was increased (346%) 24 h post-exercise, but not immediately, 48 h, or 72 h post-exercise. 3-MeHis excretion was not altered following exercise. There were no strong associations between HO-Lys excretion and either of the markers of muscle damage. We concluded that no evidence of exercise-induced collagen damage was provided by urinary HO-Lys excretion.  相似文献

The release of muscle proteins after downhill running, which mainly includes eccentric muscle action, was compared in females (F; n=9) and males (M; n=9). They performed 20 min of downhill treadmill running with 16% decline with a target heart rate of 70% of the individual VO2peak, which was determined two weeks before. Blood samples were drawn before, 6 and 24 h after exercise to measure plasma levels of skeletal troponin I (sTnI), myosin heavy chain fragments (MHC), creatine kinase (CK), and myoglobin (Mb). Baseline levels before exercise were significantly higher in males compared to females for the cytoplasmic proteins CK and Mb, but the difference for MHC and sTnI was not significant. Both groups displayed marked and significant early (6 h) increases (P<0.05) for sTnI (median: F: 8.2 microg/L; M: 22.0 microg/L), Mb (median: F: 86.8 microg/L; M: 407 microg/L), and CK (median: F: 162 U/L; M: 339 U/L). A significant (P<0.05) but delayed (24 h) increase was found for MHC (median: F: 482 microU/L; M: 651 microU/L). The absolute values for all four parameters were significantly (P<0.05) higher in males compared to females; however, no difference was found for the relative increases and the time course of all parameters between females and males. We conclude 1) that there were no significant differences in the basal concentrations of predominantly bound proteins, and 2) that there were no differences in the relative muscle protein release between females and males before and after one bout of high-intensive eccentric exercise. The higher plasma concentrations of all measured muscle proteins in males are probably caused by the higher muscle mass compared to females.  相似文献

PURPOSE: Because it is believed that bone may respond to exercise differently at different ages, we compared bone responses in immature and mature rats after 12 wk of treadmill running. METHODS: Twenty-two immature (5-wk-old) and 21 mature (17-wk-old) female Sprague Dawley rats were randomized into a running (trained, P = 10 immature, 9 mature) or a control group (controls, P = 12 immature, 12 mature) before sacrifice 12 wk later. Rats ran on a treadmill five times per week for 60-70 min at speeds up to 26 m.min. Both at baseline and after intervention, we measured total body, lumbar spine, and proximal femoral bone mineral, as well as total body soft tissue composition using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). After sacrificing the animals, we measured dynamic and static histomorphometry and three-point bending strength of the tibia. RESULTS: Running training was associated with greater differences in tibial subperiosteal area, cortical cross-sectional area, peak load, stiffness, and moment of inertia in immature and mature rats (P < 0.05). The trained rats had greater periosteal bone formation rates (P < 0.01) than controls, but there was no difference in tibial trabecular bone histomorphometry. Similar running-related gains were seen in DXA lumbar spine area (P = 0.04) and bone mineral content (BMC; P = 0.03) at both ages. For total body bone area and BMC, the immature trained group increased significantly compared with controls (P < 0.05), whereas the mature trained group gained less than did controls (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: In this model, where a similar physical training program was performed by immature and mature female rats, we demonstrated that both age groups were sensitive to loading and that bone strength gains appeared to result more from changes in bone geometry than from improved material properties.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Borrelia infections, especially chronic neuroborreliosis (NB), may cause considerable diagnostic problems. This diagnosis is based on symptoms and findings in the cerebrospinal fluid but is not always conclusive. PURPOSE: To evaluate brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in chronic NB, to compare the findings with healthy controls, and to correlate MRI findings with disease duration. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixteen well-characterized patients with chronic NB and 16 matched controls were examined in a 1.5T scanner with a standard head coil. T1- (with and without gadolinium), T2-, and diffusion-weighted imaging plus fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) imaging were used. RESULTS: White matter lesions and lesions in the basal ganglia were seen in 12 patients and 10 controls (no significant difference). Subependymal lesions were detected in patients down to the age of 25 and in the controls down to the age of 43. The number of lesions was correlated to age both in patients (rho = 0.83, P<0.01) and in controls (rho = 0.61, P<0.05), but not to the duration of disease. Most lesions were detected with FLAIR, but many also with T2-weighted imaging. CONCLUSION: A number of MRI findings were detected in patients with chronic NB, although the findings were unspecific when compared with matched controls and did not correlate with disease duration. However, subependymal lesions may constitute a potential finding in chronic NB.  相似文献

Distance running performance is slower on hilly race courses than flat courses even when the start and finish are at the same elevation, resulting in equal amounts of uphill and downhill running. The physiological mechanism limiting performance on these courses is not known. We examined the effects of uphills and downhills with 11 trained male distance runners running three 30 min self-paced competitive races on a treadmill. Race courses consisted of five, 6 min stages. Percent grades were: course A (0, 0, 0, 0, 0), course B (0, +5, 0, -5, 0) and course C (0, -5, 0, +5, 0). Pace, oxygen consumption (VO2), heart rate (HR), blood lactate (LA), and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) did not change significantly (P greater than 0.05) over stages on the control course A. Pace changed inversely with percent grade on courses B and C. The increase in downhill running pace was inadequate to maintain a level VO2 during the race. LA increased on the uphill stages even though running pace decreased. The running paces for courses B and C were slower (P less than 0.05) than course A by 2.8% and 2.4%, respectively. Runners do not maintain constant energy expenditure when racing on hilly courses. Lactate accumulated on uphill stages even though pace decreased. Running pace increased on downhills but not enough to maintain a constant VO2.  相似文献

Little data are available directly comparing physiologic responses to endurance exercise in children and adults. To evaluate age related differences during maximal and submaximal treadmill exercise, physiologic parameters recorded during testing of 20 active prepubertal boys (aged 9-13 years) were compared with values obtained in nonathletic adult males aged 23-33 years. Maximum oxygen consumption (VO2 max) was 57.9 ml.kg-1.min-1 (6.9 SD) in the boys and 48.3 ml.kg-1.min-1 (4.9 SD) in the adults. Running economy examined both as VO2 at a treadmill speed of 9.6 kph and as the slope of linear regression of VO2 at four submaximal speeds was less in boys compared to men when values were expressed per kg body mass. Differences in running economy between the two groups disappeared, however, when related to body surface area. As expected, children had a higher stride frequency at a given treadmill speed, but running stride frequency was unrelated to economy with the two groups. Lower respiratory exchange ratios were observed at maximal and submaximal exercise in the children, which may reflect diminished anaerobic capacity or differences in substrate utilization. These results substantiate the high aerobic capacity previously observed in children and suggest that lower running economy in younger subjects may largely relate to a greater body surface are/mass ratio.  相似文献

PURPOSE: To characterize differences in cytokine responses to exercise of different intensities and durations between healthy and illness-prone runners. METHODS: Trained distance runners were classified as healthy (no more than two episodes of upper-respiratory symptoms per year; N = 10) or illness-prone (four or more episodes per year; N = 8) and completed three treadmill tests: SHORT (30 min, 65% VO2max), LONG (60 min, 65% VO2max), and INTENSE (6 x 3 min, 90% VO2max). Blood samples were collected pre-, post-, 1 h, 10 h, and 24 h after exercise, and interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12, and IL-1ra concentrations were determined. Repeated-measures ANOVA was used to assess changes in cytokine responses to exercise. Magnitudes of changes and differences between groups were characterized using Cohen's effect size (ES) criteria. RESULTS: Resting IL-8, IL-10, and IL-1ra concentrations were 19-38% lower (ES:0.38-0.96; small to moderate differences) in illness-prone runners. Similarly, postexercise IL-10 concentrations were 13-20% lower (ES: 0.20-0.37; small differences), and IL-1ra concentrations were 10-20% lower (ES: 0.22-0.38; small differences) in illness-prone subjects. In contrast, IL-6 elevations were 84-185% higher (ES: 0.29-0.59, small differences) in illness-prone subjects. Postexercise responses of IL-2, IL-4, and IL-12 were small and not substantially different between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Cytokine responses to controlled treadmill running differ between healthy and illness-prone athletes. Illness-prone distance runners showed evidence suggestive of impaired inflammatory regulation in the hours after exercise that may account for the greater frequency of upper-respiratory symptoms experienced.  相似文献

Hypoxia challenges left ventricular (LV) function due to reduced energy supply. Conflicting results exist whether high‐altitude exposure impairs LV diastolic function and thus contributes to the high altitude‐induced increase in systolic pulmonary artery pressure (sPAP) and reduction in stroke volume (SV). This study aimed to assess LV diastolic function, LV end‐diastolic pressure (LVEDP), and LA mechanics using comprehensive echocardiographic imaging in healthy volunteers at 4559 m. Fifty subjects performed rapid (<20 hours) and active ascent from 1130 m to 4559 m (high). All participants underwent echocardiography during baseline examination at 424 m (low) as well as 7, 20 and 44 hours after arrival at high altitude. Heart rate (HR), sPAP, and comprehensive volumetric‐ and Doppler‐ as well as speckle tracking‐derived LA strain parameters were obtained to assess LV diastolic function, LA mechanics, and LVEDP in a multiparametric approach. Data for final analyses were available in 46 subjects. HR (low: 64 ± 11 vs high: 79 ± 14 beats/min, P < 0.001) and sPAP (low: 24.4 ± 3.8 vs high: 38.5 ± 8.2 mm Hg, P < 0.001) increased following ascent and remained elevated at high altitude. Stroke volume (low: 64.5 ± 15.0 vs high: 58.1 ± 16.4 mL, P < 0.001) and EDV decreased following ascent and remained decreased at high altitude due to decreased LV passive filling volume, whereas LA mechanics were preserved. There was no case of LV diastolic dysfunction or increased LVEDP estimates. In summary, this study shows that rapid and active ascent of healthy individuals to 4559 m impairs passive filling and SV of the LV. These alterations were not related to changes in LV and LA mechanics.  相似文献

Maximal physiologic responses to treadmill running and deep water running using a flotation device were compared in 12 trained men and 12 trained women. Although the men had significantly higher ventilation volumes, VO2max (liters of oxygen per minute and milliliters of oxygen per kilogram per minute), there were no significant differences in maximal heart rates or respiratory exchange ratios between the sexes. Significantly lower ventilation volumes, VO2max (LO2.min-1 and mlO2.kg-1.min-1), and heart rates were obtained in response to maximal water running compared to treadmill running, regardless of gender. Neither the men's nor women's maximal respiratory exchange ratios were significantly different between modes. The analysis of variance indicated that there were no significant interactions for any of the maximal responses to the tests between the sexes. The magnitude of these differences is similar to that found between treadmill running and cycling ergometry and should not preclude deep water running as a training technique. Caution, however, is advised if the training intensity is to be prescribed on the basis of land-determined heart rates.  相似文献

Minimizing musculo‐skeletal damage and fatigue is considered paramount for performance in trail running. Our purposes were to investigate the effects of the foot strike pattern and its variability on (a) muscle activity during a downhill trail run and (b) immediate and delayed neuromuscular fatigue. Twenty‐three runners performed a 6.5‐km run (1264 m of negative elevation change). Electromyographic activity of lower‐limb muscles was recorded continuously. Heel and metatarsal accelerations were recorded to identify the running technique. Peripheral and central fatigue was assessed in knee extensors (KE) and plantar flexors (PF) at Pre‐, Post‐, and 2 days post downhill run (Post2d). Anterior patterns were associated with (a) higher gastrocnemius lateralis activity and lower tibialis anterior and vastus lateralis activity during the run and (b) larger decreases in KE high‐frequency stimulus‐evoked torque Post and larger decrements in KE MVC Post2d. High patterns variability during the run was associated with (a) smaller decreases in KE Db100 Post and MVC Post2d and (b) smaller decreases in PF MVC Post and Post2d. Anterior patterns increase the severity of KE peripheral fatigue. However, high foot strike pattern variability during the run reduced acute and delayed neuromuscular fatigue in KE and PF.  相似文献

BackgroundThe fluctuations within stride time series (i.e., stride time variability and complexity) during running exhibit long-range correlation. Detecting the breakdown of the long-range correlation was proposed for monitoring the occurrence of running-related injuries during running. However, the stride time fluctuations were only measured from the unilateral side. In addition, the reliability of the stride time fluctuations of within-subject repeated measures remains largely unknown, particularly during exhaustive running.PurposesThis study investigated between-side and between-day reliabilities of the stride time variability and complexity of right and left sides during an exhaustive running.MethodsThe stride time variability and complexity of bilateral sides were obtained while 24 healthy participants performed a 31-minute treadmill running at their individual anaerobic threshold speed. Seven of the 24 participants performed the treadmill running test twice at two different days 5–7 days apart. Limits of agreement (LoA) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were respectively used to assess the absolute and relative between-side and between-day reliabilities.ResultsThe stride time variability and complexity of right and left sides were highly symmetrical (LoA: (-0.500%, 0.459%) and (-0.052, 0.051), respectively; ICC: 0.94 (0.87, 0.97) and 0.98 (0.95, 0.99), respectively). The overall stride time variability and complexity revealed good between-day reliability (LoA: (-1.044%, 0.724%) and (-0.067, 0.115), respectively; ICC: 0.78 (0.45, 0.92) and 0.81 (0.48, 0.93), respectively). However, the segmented stride time complexity showed poor between-day reliability (ICCs<0.40).ConclusionThe findings demonstrated that the stride time series showed equivalent fluctuations between right and left sides and good between-day reliability in fluctuations during exhaustive running. Given the poor between-day reliability in the segmented stride time series, stride time series during exhaustive running could be collected from either right or left side and should be processed as an overall in the future.  相似文献

The effect of changes in baseline regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) values on the cerebral blood flow response during neuronal activation was studied with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Using a breath-holding challenge as a hypercapnic stimulus, rCBF alterations during photic stimulation under normo- and hypercapnia were determined in nine volunteers. With breath-holding, baseline rCBF in areas corresponding to the visual cortex significantly increased from 54 +/- 5 ml/100 g/min to 85 +/- 9 ml/100 g/min (P < 0.001). Despite this significant change in baseline flow values, the rCBF increase during visual stimulation was very similar under normo- and hypercapnic conditions (28 +/- 8 ml/100 g/min versus 26 +/- 8 ml/100 g/min, respectively). This study supports the notion that within wide physiologic variations, task-induced cerebral blood flow changes are independent of baseline rCBF values.  相似文献

BackgroundBarefoot running has gained popularity among physical activity practitioners, but there is a lack of information regarding the acute adaptations to this running technique without supervision. Information about acute adaptations can help to define the best way to insert barefoot running in the routine of runners willing to, and also provide orientation for those people who want to experience this technique.Research questionWhat acute adaptations can be observed among recreational runners exposed to barefoot running?MethodsSagittal 2D kinematics, plantar pressure, foot sensitivity and delayed onset muscle soreness were compared between conditions of shod and barefoot running in 13 recreational runners who performed two trials of 5 km treadmill running.ResultsWe found an acute effect of barefoot running on foot landing that changes from a rearfoot strike to a forefoot strike pattern. This change most likely contributed to the increase in neuromuscular recruitment of calf muscles (i.e. gastrocnemius and soleus) resulting in higher perception of delayed onset muscle soreness. Barefoot running also elicited higher stride cadence. Plantar pressure before and after running revealed higher pressure in the different foot regions after barefoot running. Foot sensitivity increased after running regardless of the footwear condition.ConclusionBarefoot running has acute effects on running technique including higher perception of delayed onset muscle soreness in the 48 h following the exercise.SignificanceOur results highlight the importance of following participants for days after a first session of barefoot running in order to properly manage the acute adaptation periods as well provide precise advices for those trying the barefoot technique.  相似文献

PURPOSE: Resistive exercise elicits a pressor response that results in a dramatic increase in blood pressure (BP) during the exercise. However, it is not known if the BP elevation persists after resistive exercise. METHODS: This study examined the effects of an acute resistive exercise session on 24-h ambulatory BP in sedentary (5 men, 6 women), resistance-trained (6 men, 6 women), and endurance-trained (4 men, 6 women) young subjects (age 22 +/- 3.2 yr) with normal BP. Two 24-h ambulatory BP recordings were made on each subject, one after two sets of resistive exercise on 12 weight machines and one after 48 h without prior exercise. RESULTS: Systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial BP and heart rate (HR) were not different in the hours after and for up to 24 h after the single resistive exercise session compared with the control day. There also was no difference in the ambulatory BP or HR response after the single session of resistive exercise based on the training status of the subjects. CONCLUSION: Thus, the elevated BP that occurs during resistive exercise does not persist in the 24 h after acute resistive exercise in sedentary, resistance-trained, or endurance-trained, young, normotensive men and women.  相似文献

PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between calculated doses to the neurovascular bundles (NVBs) and the penile bulb (PB) and the development of erectile dysfunction (ED) after low-dose-rate prostate brachytherapy (LDRPB) alone. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between September 1997 and June 1999, 84 men were treated with LDRPB alone. Inclusion criteria for this study were (1) no ED according to a self-administered questionnaire before PB, (2) treatment with PB alone (125I; 144 Gy), (3) postimplant CT scan of the prostate 1 month after PB, and (4) minimum of 24 months of continuous follow-up. Fifty men met all inclusion criteria. ED was assessed by a self-administered questionnaire completed before and at each follow-up visit after LDRPB. Radiation doses to the NVB and PB were calculated on the basis of axial postimplant CT images. Multiple variables (patient-related and dosimetric quantifiers) that may predict for the development of ED were examined by univariate analysis. RESULTS: Thirty of the 50 men (60%) were potent at last follow-up. The only patient-related variable that predicted for the development of ED was patient age (<65 vs. >65 years; p=0.03). The calculated mean maximum doses to the NVB and PB were 684 Gy (range, 195-1277 Gy) and 498 Gy (range, 44-971 Gy), respectively. The mean calculated doses to 50% of the NVB and PB were 158 Gy (range, 76-240 Gy) and 43 Gy (range, 19-101 Gy), respectively. The calculated mean maximum, mean minimum, and mean doses to 50% of the NVB or PB did not differ between those men who developed ED and those men who did not develop ED. None of the dosimetric variables examined predicted the development of ED after LDRPB. CONCLUSIONS: In our experience, higher calculated doses to the NVB or PB are not associated with ED after LDRPB.  相似文献

In a randomized, placebo-controlled study the effect of 10 weeks of supplementation with either 5.2 g of a concentrated fish oil triglyceride (Triomar™) enriched in omega-3 fatty acids (1.60 g/day EPA and 1.04 g/day DHA) or 5.2 g corn oil (serving as placebo) on maximal aerobic power, anaerobic threshold and running performance was assessed in 28 well-trained male soccer players (18–35 years). Supplements were given as 650-mg capsules. Capsule assignment was randomized to one omega-3 group ( n =15), given eight Triomar™ capsules per day, and one placebo group ( n =13), given eight capsules of corn oil per day. During the 10-week supplementation period the subjects maintained their usual diets and training regimes. Red blood cell (RBC) osmotic fragility, triglycerides and fatty acid composition in plasma were assessed before and after the supplementation period. The pre- and post-supplementation tests of maximal aerobic power, anaerobic power and running performance showed no significant difference between the two groups. Subjects in the omega-3 group had significantly reduced plasma triglycerides, rised EPA (175%) and DHA (40%) in the total lipid fraction of plasma after supplementation. RBC osmotic fragility did not change. In conclusion, the results do not support the hypothesis that endurance athletes can improve maximal aerobic performance by omega 3-fatty acid supplementation.  相似文献

PURPOSE: The study was undertaken to determine whether acute supplementation with zinc or vitamin E would modify neuroendocrine responses to physiologic stress. METHODS: Specifically, the effects of exhaustive running on blood glucose, lactate, ACTH, cortisol, growth hormone, prolactin, catecholamine, and interleukin 6 (IL-6) concentrations were determined in 10 eumenorrheic runners after supplementation with zinc (25 mg), vitamin E (400 IU), or placebo. Subjects ran at 65-70% of their VO2max, to exhaustion, on a treadmill during the follicular phase of their menstrual cycles over three cycles. RESULTS: There were no significant differences associated with supplementation for any of the hormonal and metabolic measures. Exercise, however, significantly (P<0.05) increased plasma lactate, ACTH, prolactin, and catecholamine concentrations, all of which peaked immediately after exercise (POST). Plasma cortisol concentrations were significantly (P<0.05) elevated at POST, and a further increase was noted 1 h after exercise. IL-6 concentrations rose linearly throughout exercise and reached peak values at POST. Exercise-induced changes were transient in that all measures returned to baseline within 24 h. CONCLUSIONS: Acute supplementation with zinc or vitamin E did not influence the effects of exhaustive running on metabolic and endocrine responses in women. The effects of chronic supplementation on neuroendocrine responses to exercise remain to be determined.  相似文献

AIM: The aim of this study was to compare the oxygen uptake (VO(2)) slow component (SC) during level and uphill running in endurance runners, and to identify associations between the SC and the following aerobic fitness indicators: peak VO(2), running speed associated with the peak VO(2) (Vpeak), running speed at the lactic threshold and the VO(2) fraction elicited at the lactic threshold. METHODS: Fourteen male endurance-trained runners underwent several 6-min bouts of level (LTR) and 10.5% uphill treadmill running. VO(2) SC was calculated as the difference between mean VO(2) during the 6th and the 3rd minutes. RESULTS: The highest mean values for the SC were 181.9+/-240.2 mL x min(-1) for level running at approximately 94% peak VO(2)2 and 105.4+/-154.6 mL x min(-1) for uphill running at approximately 90% peak VO(2). The SC observed during the last bout of the LTR correlated with peak VO(2) and with Vpeak (-0.71 and -0.76, P<0.05, respectively). CONCLUSION: The results show that for endurance-trained runners the magnitude of the SC is not affected by the treadmill gradient and that within a homogeneous sample of endurance-trained runners the SC does not correlate with indicators of aerobic fitness.  相似文献
