Although the association of Internet addiction (IA) with self-regulation has been widely observed in previous studies, its variance with age remains poorly understood. Using dual models of self-regulation, we aimed to test the effects of effortful control and impulsivity on IA and to explore the effect of the interaction between age stage and self-regulation on IA. In this study, 4313 students nested in 100 classes were surveyed using the Internet Addiction Test (IAT), the Dual-Modes of Self-Control Scale (DMSC-S) and a demographic questionnaire. Hierarchical generalized linear models (HGLMs) were then used to test our assumptions. The results indicated that the IA prevalence rate among the surveyed adolescents was 10.9%, and IA was found to be negatively related to the effortful control trait and positively related to the impulsivity trait. Compared with primary school students, middle school students were more likely to be Internet addicts; however, the prevalence of IA among college students was comparable to that among middle school students. A slopes-as-outcome model showed that the association between IA and effort control was stronger among junior high school students than among students in other grade levels, but no grade differences were found in the slopes for impulsivity. We integrate our results with the findings of previous studies and discuss possible theoretical implications.  相似文献

Given the rapid growth of mobile games, one of the main purposes of this study is to analyze the effect of online gaming on addiction by classifying it into PC online gaming and mobile gaming. This study aims to analyze the extent to which playing games after midnight affects addictive behavior. In addition, this study analyzes the impact of game genres, parental factors, the leisure environment and relationship satisfaction on game addiction. About 1556 students living in five major Korean cities were sampled. Online game playing time was an important predictor of game addiction, especially among those who played PC online games late at night. Among the game genres, RPG, simulation and casual games were positively associated with addictive behavior. While play and the leisure environment had little effect on game addiction, the extent of satisfaction with relationships with parents, friends, and teachers did have a significant influence. However, parental attachment and parental mediation did not impact game addiction.  相似文献

The multidimensional construct of impulsivity is implicated in all phases of the addiction cycle. Substance dependent individuals (SDIs) demonstrate elevated impulsivity on both trait and laboratory tests of neurobehavioral impulsivity; however our understanding of the relationship between these different aspects of impulsivity in users of different classes of drugs remains rudimentary. The goal of this study was to assess for commonalities and differences in the relationships between trait and neurobehavioral impulsivity in heroin and amphetamine addicts. Participants included 58 amphetamine dependent (ADIs) and 74 heroin dependent individuals (HDIs) in protracted abstinence. We conducted Principal Component Analyses (PCA) on two self-report trait and six neurobehavioral measures of impulsivity, which resulted in two trait impulsivity (action, planning) and four neurobehavioral impulsivity composites (discriminability, response inhibition efficiency, decision-making efficiency, quality of decision-making). Multiple regression analyses were used to determine whether neurobehavioral impulsivity is predicted by trait impulsivity and drug type. The analyses revealed a significant interaction between drug type and trait action impulsivity on response inhibition efficiency, which showed opposite relationships for ADIs and HDIs. Specifically, increased trait action impulsivity was associated with worse response inhibition efficiency in ADIs, but with better efficiency in HDIs. These results challenge the unitary account of drug addiction and contribute to a growing body of literature that reveals important behavioral, cognitive, and neurobiological differences between users of different classes of drugs.  相似文献

This study examined differences in stigmatizing attitudes toward individuals addicted to drugs among three immigrant generations of youth, and the role of adolescent drug use and friends’ drug use on the association. Data were derived from the 2005 cycle of the Ontario Student Drug Use Survey administered to students in grades 7–12 in the province of Ontario, Canada. A sample of 4078 students completed questionnaires that included a measure of stigma toward drug addiction. Results indicated some immigrant generational differences in negative attitudes toward individuals addicted to drugs, but much of this difference was explained by adolescents’ individual drug use and friendships with individuals who use drugs. The difference between second-generation immigrant youth and their third- and later-generation counterparts was not fully explained. This study highlights the need for greater research on adolescent stigma toward drug addiction given that stigma may reduce drug usage but also may reduce help-seeking among individuals with an addiction.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Cannabis is the most popular drug used in the European Union, closely followed by cocaine. Whereas cannabis impairs neurocognitive function in occasional cannabis users, such impairments appear less prominent in heavy users, possibly as a result of tolerance. The present study was designed to assess whether the impairing effects of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in heavy cannabis users would present in a wide range of neuropsychological functions or selectively affect specific performance domains. We also assessed the acute effects of cocaine on neurocognitive functions of heavy cannabis users.

EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH

Heavy cannabis users, who had a history of cocaine use (n = 61), participated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, three-way crossover study. Subjects received single doses of cocaine HCl (300 mg), cannabis (THC μg·kg−1) and placebo, and completed a number of tests measuring impulse control and psychomotor function.

KEY RESULTS

Single doses of cannabis impaired psychomotor function and increased response errors during impulsivity tasks. Single doses of cocaine improved psychomotor function and decreased response time in impulsivity tasks, but increased errors.

CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS

Heavy cannabis users display impairments in a broad range of neuropsychological domains during THC intoxication. Impairments observed in psychomotor tasks, but not in impulsivity tasks, appeared smaller in magnitude as compared with those previously reported in occasional cannabis users. Heavy cannabis users were sensitive to the stimulating and inhibitory effects of cocaine on psychomotor function and impulsivity respectively. The reduction in proficiency in impulse control may put drug users at increased risk of repeated drug use and addiction.  相似文献

Background: Considerable research has examined impulsivity between individuals, but less research has focused on whether impulsivity fluctuates within a person. Although previous research supports trait levels of impulsivity as a risk factor for increased alcohol involvement, it is unclear whether daily (i.e., state) fluctuations in impulsivity coincide with same-day drinking behaviors. The present pilot study tested (1) the extent to which impulsivity fluctuates within-person; (2) the influence of daily impulsivity on alcohol use outcomes across all days (i.e., whether drinking occurred, the number of drinks consumed, and intentions to drink) and on drinking days only (i.e., whether heavy episodic drinking occurred and the number of problems experienced); and (3) daily affect as moderators of these relationships.

Method: Participants were 24 young adult drinkers without postsecondary education who completed a baseline plus 14 follow-up daily surveys. Each day, participants reported their impulsivity, affect, and drinking behavior.

Results: Multilevel modeling revealed that 42.5% of the variability in daily impulsivity was due to within-person differences. Impulsivity was related to greater odds of heavy episodic drinking and more alcohol-related problems on drinking days. Positive affect moderated the relationship between impulsivity and alcohol-related problems, and the relationship between impulsivity and drinking intentions.

Conclusions: Findings suggest that changes in positive affect and impulsivity may be a risk factor for alcohol problems in a daily context. Future research examining within-person impulsivity and negative outcomes may benefit from considering positive affect.  相似文献

Internet addiction (IA) among adolescents is a serious public health problem around the world. However, there have been few studies that examine the association between IA and stressful life events and psychological symptoms among Chinese adolescent internet users. We examined the association between IA and stressful life events and psychological symptoms among a random sample of school students who were internet users (N = 755) in Wuhan, China. Internet addiction, stressful life events, coping style and psychological symptoms were measured by self-rated scales. The prevalence rate of internet addiction was 6.0% among adolescent internet users. Logistic regression analyses indicated that stressors from interpersonal problem and school related problem and anxiety symptoms were significantly associated with IA after controlling for demographic characteristics. Analyses examining the coping style with the IA revealed that negative coping style may mediate the effects of stressful life events to increase the risk of IA. However, no significant interaction of stressful life events and psychological symptoms was found. These findings of the current study indicate a high prevalence of internet addiction among Chinese adolescent internet users and highlight the importance of stressors from interpersonal problem and school related problem as a risk factor for IA which mainly mediated through negative coping style.  相似文献

Abstract

Background: Prior research demonstrated the relationship between birth order and adolescent risky behavior. The possible connection between the presence of siblings and birth order and underage alcohol abuse is unknown. Methods: Our study involves 10 years of data collection on underage alcohol intoxication in Dutch hospitals. A total of 2,234 patients were included in the current study. Results: Adolescents treated for alcohol intoxication less often have no siblings (6.7%) than the population has (14.8%). Furthermore, middle and youngest children are overrepresented in the patient population. Conclusion: The presence of older siblings is a risk factor for acute alcohol intoxication.  相似文献

Impulsivity and risk-taking propensity are neurobehavioral traits that reliably distinguish between smoking and non-smoking adults. However, how these traits relate to smoking quantity and nicotine dependence among older adolescent smokers is unclear. The current study examined impulsivity and risk-taking propensity in relation to smoking behavior and nicotine dependence among current older adolescent smokers (age 16–20 years; N = 107). Participants completed the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale‐11 (BIS-11), the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART), and self-report measures of smoking behavior and nicotine dependence. Results indicated a significant positive relationship between nicotine dependence and the Attention subscale (β = .20, t = 2.07, p < .05) and the Non-planning subscale (β = .19, t = 1.92, p < .06) of the BIS-11. Contrary to expectation, the results also indicated a significant negative relationship between performance on the BART and nicotine dependence (β = − .19, t = − 2.18, p < .05), such that greater risk-taking propensity was associated with less dependence. These data suggest that impulsivity and risk-taking propensity are related to older adolescent smoking but are separable traits with distinguishable associations with nicotine dependence among adolescents. These findings support the notion that impulsivity is related to heightened nicotine dependence, but suggest that the relationship between risk-taking propensity and nicotine dependence is more ambiguous and warrants further investigation.  相似文献

Use of alcohol and drugs during pregnancy is regarded as a serious problem in the medical field. The current study explored gender and ethnic differences in attitudes and behaviors related to sexuality and contraceptive use among European American, Mexican American and Native American female and male clients in drug recovery programs. The study also examined the relationship between sexual abuse, concern for pregnancy, concern for contracting sexually transmitted diseases and contraception use among women drug users. Results showed gender and ethnic differences in attitudes toward pregnancy, abortion and contraceptive use. In addition, both Mexican American and Native American women who had a high concern for pregnancy were more likely to use birth control when they reported sexual abuse than when they reported no abuse. In contrast, European American women with a high concern for pregnancy showed a tendency to use birth control less when they reported abuse than when they did not. The observed attitudinal and behavioral differences between genders and ethnic groups are discussed in relation to design of treatment program components to increase contraceptive use and decrease unwanted pregnancies among drug users.  相似文献

Background: This study examined whether lifetime heroin-use consequences mediate the relationship between trait impulsivity and three current mood outcomes: depression symptoms, stress levels, and perception of life events.

Method: Regular heroin users (N?=?163) were assessed using the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) to measure trait impulsivity; a standardized Drug History and Use Questionnaire to measure lifetime adverse consequences of heroin use; Beck Depression Inventory II to measure current depression symptoms; Stress subscale of the Depression Anxiety Stress scale; and Hassles and Uplifts scale to measure perception of life events.

Results: BIS-11 Attentional and Motor impulsivity were positively related to number of adverse heroin-use consequences, depression symptoms, and stress level, and negatively associated with positive perception of events. A greater number of heroin-use consequences was related to more depression symptoms, higher stress, more negative perception of events, injection heroin use, and earlier ages of first and regular heroin use. In six mediation models, lifetime heroin-use consequences partially mediated relationships between two trait impulsivity domains (Attentional, Motor) and current mood measures (depression symptoms, stress, perception of events).

Conclusions: The present findings suggest that current negative mood can be a response to the accumulated burden of heroin-use consequences, particularly in the presence of high trait impulsivity.  相似文献

Rationale

Impulsivity and craving are both associated with higher relapse rates and a worse prognosis in patients with a substance use disorder, but the relationship between these two phenomena has been largely ignored in the field of alcohol use disorders.

Objectives

The primary aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between different dimensions of impulsivity and different forms of self-reported craving. Additionally, the influence of the severity of alcohol dependence on impulsivity, craving, and on their relationship was exploed.

Methods

Impulsivity and craving levels were investigated in 87 abstinent alcohol-dependent (AD) patients using a broad range of self-report questionnaires and behavioral impulsivity measures. Alcohol use was measured by means of the timeline followback method.

Results

Higher scores of emotional craving (Alcohol Urge Questionnaire—AUQ) were significantly related to higher self-reported impulsivity (Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, version 11) and to higher cognitive impulsivity (information sampling task). Additionally, exploratory analyses suggest that these relationships are more pronounced in severe AD patients compared to less severe AD patients. No significant relationships were found between emotional craving (AUQ) and motor impulsivity (stop signal task) or delay discounting and between obsessive-compulsive craving (Obsessive Compulsive Drinking Scale) and measures of impulsivity.

Conclusions

Emotional craving is related to self-reported impulsivity and to cognitive impulsivity. These relationships seem to be more pronounced in AD patients with severe alcohol dependence. Further research is needed to explore the effect of this relationship on treatment outcome and relapse.  相似文献

Impulsivity and craving have been independently hypothesized to contribute to sustained drug use and relapse in addiction. The primary focus of this project was to determine the relationship between impulsivity and craving in 85 cocaine-dependent and 73 methamphetamine-dependent, non-treatment-seeking volunteers. Drug use was assessed with a 14-item, self-report drug and alcohol use questionnaire. Self report instruments utilized included the Barratt Impulsivity Scale (BIS) and the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), which probed “just before your last use of cocaine (for cocaine-dependent participants) or methamphetamine (for methamphetamine-dependent participants), how much craving did you experience?” The groups were similar with respect to recent use of cocaine or methamphetamine, alcohol, nicotine, and marijuana. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) did not reveal significant differences between cocaine and methamphetamine groups for total impulsivity or total craving. Simple linear regression revealed correlations between total impulsivity and total craving in cocaine (r2 = 0.05, p ≤ 0.03) and methamphetamine users (r2 = 0.09, p ≤ 0.008). Participants were separated into high impulsivity (HIBIS) or low impulsivity (LOBIS) subgroups using a median split. ANOVA revealed significantly higher craving in the HIBIS group versus the LOBIS group in methamphetamine users (p ≤ 0.02), but not in cocaine users. For both cocaine and methamphetamine groups, level of impulsivity and craving were found to be related to some drug use variables including years of alcohol use, severity of withdrawal, and craving level following drug use. Taken together, this study shows a marginal relationship between impulsivity and craving, which may further the understanding of motivational factors contributing to ongoing drug use and addiction in psychostimulant users.  相似文献

Several clinical data indicate that depression is frequently comorbid with psychostimulant (cocaine, amphetamines) addiction. This short review summarizes preclinical results and observations showing how reward processes are modified in animal models of depression, and which depression-like effects are induced in experimental animals withdrawn from chronic treatment with psychostimulants.  相似文献

Purpose

The present study examined the psychosocial factors associated with the initiation and persistence of Internet addiction among adolescents in Taiwan.

Methods

A total of 2315 students from 26 high schools were assessed in the 10th grade, with follow-up performed in the 11th grade, in Taipei, Taiwan. Self-administered questionnaires were collected in each year to assess the pattern of changes in Internet addiction and psychosocial factors.

Results

Of the 1602 students without an Internet addiction in the 10th grade, 253 (15.8%) had initiated Internet addiction by grade 11. Multivariate analysis results indicated that greater engagement in online activities (i.e., social network website use, online gaming), depression, and lower school bonding in grade 10 coupled with an increase in online activities, depression, and smoking from grades 10 to 11 predicted the initiation of Internet addiction. Of the 605 students with Internet addiction in the 10th grade, the addiction had persisted for 383 students (63.3%) in grade 11. An increase in the existence of depression and alcohol use from grades 10 to 11 predicted the persistence of Internet addiction.

Conclusions

Online activities, depression, and substance use were important predictors of youth initiation and of the persistence of Internet addiction.  相似文献

Depression is common among college students and higher levels of depression are associated with greater alcohol-related problems. However, depression is frequently not found to be directly associated with more alcohol use. This study examined whether various aspects of impulsivity (negative urgency, lack of premeditation, lack of perseverance, sensation seeking, and delay discounting) and drinking to cope with negative affect help to account for the relationship between depression and alcohol problems among emerging adult college drinkers who reported at least a minimal level of depressive symptoms. In this cross-sectional study, 143 emerging adult (between 18 and 25 years old) female (69.9%, n = 100) and male (30.1%, n = 43) college drinkers with at least minimal depressive symptoms completed measures of depression, alcohol use and problems, drinking to cope, and impulsivity. A multiple mediation analysis revealed that only negative urgency and drinking to cope partially mediated the depression-alcohol problems relationship. Moderated mediation analyses revealed that impulsivity-related constructs did not significantly interact with drinking to cope to increase alcohol problems. It appears that alcohol use is particularly problematic for students with elevated depression, and this is partly attributable to depression's association with negative urgency, in addition to its association with drinking to cope. Our findings suggest that students who suffer from depression may engage in problematic drinking behavior in part because negative affect is detrimental to their short-term impulse control and decision making, independent of maladaptive attempts to regulate affect through drinking to cope.  相似文献
