ObjectiveTo determine the relationship of motor skills and adaptive behavior skills in young children with autism.DesignA multiple regression analysis tested the relationship of motor skills on the adaptive behavior composite, daily living, adaptive social and adaptive communicative skills holding constant age, non-verbal problem solving, and calibrated autism severity.SettingMajority of the data collected took place in an autism clinic.ParticipantsA cohort of 233 young children with ASD (n = 172), PDD-NOS (n = 22) and non-ASD (developmental delay, n = 39) between the ages of 14–49 months were recruited from early intervention studies and clinical referrals. Children with non-ASD (developmental delay) were included in this study to provide a range of scores indicted through calibrated autism severity.InterventionsNot applicable.Main outcome measuresThe primary outcome measures in this study were adaptive behavior skills.ResultsFine motor skills significantly predicted all adaptive behavior skills (p < 0.01). Gross motor skills were predictive of daily living skills (p < 0.05). Children with weaker motor skills displayed greater deficits in adaptive behavior skills.ConclusionsThe fine and gross motor skills are significantly related to adaptive behavior skills in young children with autism spectrum disorder. There is more to focus on and new avenues to explore in the realm of discovering how to implement early intervention and rehabilitation for young children with autism and motor skills need to be a part of the discussion. 相似文献

This study evaluated the effects of therapeutic horseback riding on social functioning in children with autism. We hypothesized
that participants in the experimental condition (n = 19), compared to those on the wait-list control (n = 15), would demonstrate significant improvement in social functioning following a 12-weeks horseback riding intervention.
Autistic children exposed to therapeutic horseback riding exhibited greater sensory seeking, sensory sensitivity, social motivation,
and less inattention, distractibility, and sedentary behaviors. The results provide evidence that therapeutic horseback riding
may be a viable therapeutic option in treating children with autism spectrum disorders. 相似文献

ABSTRACTWhile an enormous amount of research has been done on the deficient conversation skills in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), little is known about their performance on presuppositions, a domain of knowledge that is crucial for successful communication. This study investigated the comprehension of four types of presupposition, namely existential, factive, lexical and structural presuppositions, in school-age Cantonese-speaking children with and without ASD. A group of children with ASD (n = 21), mean age 8.8, was compared with a group of typically developing children (n = 106). Knowledge of presuppositions was evaluated based on children’s ability to judge whether a given utterance was a correct presupposition of a preceding utterance. Children with ASD were found to show a deficit in the comprehension of presuppositions, even after controlling for differences in general language ability and non-verbal intelligence. The relative difficulty of the four types of presupposition did not differ between the two groups of children. The present findings provide new empirical evidence that children with ASD have a deficit in the comprehension of presuppositions. Future research should explore whether the deficit in the comprehension of presuppositions is related to the development of theory of mind skills in children with ASD. 相似文献

The current study experimentally evaluated the effects of therapeutic horseback riding on the behavior of children with autism using a multiple baseline across participants design and a waitlist control group for comparison purposes. Participants were observed weekly in an after-school program during four center-based activities and during therapeutic horseback riding lessons. We also conducted intermittent probes of behavior at home. Therapeutic horseback riding did not produce systematic changes in affect, responding to others’ initiations, spontaneous initiations, off-task behavior, compliance, problem behavior, or performance on two standardized measures. Three of four participants’ posture improved during therapeutic horseback riding. 相似文献

Asperger Syndrome (AS) and High Functioning Autism (HFA) are psychiatric conditions belonging to the Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASDs), characterized by social dysfunction and focused interest, in the absence of mental retardation. Previous reports suggest that AS/HFA may be associated with important psychiatric comorbidities. Among the psychiatric internalizing disorders, depression and anxiety are probably the most common disorders. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of mood disorders and identifying peculiar clinical features in subjects suffering from AS and HFA. 30 male patients with AS/HFA, 30 male patients affected by Major Depression (MD) and 35 male Typically Developing (TD) comparison were assessed with the CDI and the CDRS-R. Participants’ parents were invited to complete the CBCL and the P-YMRS. Moreover, the CGAS was rated by the clinicians. The evaluation of depressive symptoms showed that AS/HFA group reported higher depressive symptoms, as showed by CDI total, CBCL internalizing and CDRS-R total, compared to the TD group. No significant difference of depressive symptoms was found between the AS/HFA and the MD group, with the exception of CDRS-R total score. Moreover, linear regression analysis in the AS/HFA group between CGAS and depressive symptoms revealed that a higher level of depressive symptoms increased the risk of poorer global functioning. These results suggest that the depressive symptoms in AS/HFA patients may be associated with poorer global functioning, with a consequent impairment in their psychological profile and social adjustment, and should alert clinicians to the importance of assessing mood disorders in order to choose the appropriate treatment. 相似文献

Moebius sequence is a rare congenital disorder usually defined as a combination of facial weakness with impairment of ocular abduction. A strong association of Moebius sequence with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) has been suggested in earlier studies with heterogenous age groups. The primary caregivers of all children and adolescents with Moebius sequence aged 6–17 years known to the German Moebius foundation were anonymously asked to complete two screening measures of ASD [Behavior and Communication Questionnaire (VSK); Marburger Asperger’s Syndrome Rating Scale (MBAS)]. For those who reached the cut-off for ASD, well standardized diagnostic instruments (Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised, Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, WISC-III, and Kinder-DIPS) should be administered. Minimal diagnostic criteria for Moebius sequence were congenital facial weakness (uni- or bilateral) and impairment of ocular abduction (uni- or bilateral). Familiar cases should be excluded. The primary caregivers of 35/46 children and adolescents (18 males, 17 females, mean age 11.5 years) sent back completed questionnaires, but only 27 subjects met inclusion criteria. According to the primary caregivers, none of these subjects showed mental retardation. Two probands (both males 9 and 16 years old) reached the cut-off of the MBAS whereas the results of the VSK did not indicate ASDs in any of the patients. The 9 year old boy could be examined personally and did not meet diagnostic criteria of ASD. ASDs might be not as frequent as reported in previous studies on patients with Moebius sequence, at least not in patients without mental retardation. 相似文献

Psychopharmacotherapy can be an effective part of the treatment for individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). However debate continues over the potential benefits and costs of these treatments; additionally little is known about the pattern of psychotropic medication use in developing countries. We aimed to survey the use of psychotropic medication, their subcategories and its associations among a representative local sample of 345 Iranian pupils with ASDs. All required information about demographics as well as clinical and medication history of children was collected through interviews with the families. Overall, 80% of participants were currently using at least one psychotropic medication while, and up to 97% of the sample had at least one psychotropic medication claim during the last year. Antipsychotics were the most frequent medications (57.4%) while antidepressants were used by only a small proportion of participants (8.7%). Further analysis revealed no significant association between any psychotropic medication use on one hand and clinical and demographic characteristics on the other hand. Time differences, cross cultural variations, and also cost and availability of treatment options in developing countries are discussed as possible explanations for different patterns and more than expected rate of psychotropic medication use in pupils with ASD. 相似文献

The current studies evaluated variables affecting sharing exhibited by children with autism spectrum disorder. Study 1 evaluated the effects of manipulating item preference on the level of assistance needed to exhibit sharing behavior for 4 children with autism. Item preference clearly affected 2 participants’ percentage of independent sharing. Preference did not have as clear of an effect for a third participant. However, sharing a high-preference item generally required a higher level of prompting (e.g., vocal prompts) to share. The fourth participant's percentage of independent sharing was not influenced by preference, and his independent sharing behavior was similar across item preference. Study 2 assessed the effectiveness of a token reinforcement procedure as an intervention designed to increase independent sharing of high-preference items for the two participants who did not independently share those items during Study 1. Independent sharing increased for both participants when the token procedure was in place and decreased when it was removed. 相似文献

Challenging behaviors are extremely prevalent within the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) population. To date, numerous factors affecting the rates of challenging behaviors within the ASD population have been examined including age, gender, ethnicity, and intellectual functioning. Controversy has arisen in regard to the effect of gender on challenging behaviors rates in individuals with ASD with some researchers finding differences while others do not. The aim of the current study was to examine the gender effects of children and adolescents with ASD on challenging behavior rates in an effort to assist in clarifying this relationship. Three hundred ninety-one children ages 2 through 17 years participated in the current study and were assigned to one of four groups: male with ASD, male without ASD, female with ASD, and female without ASD. Differences in rates of challenging behaviors between the groups were examined using the Autism Spectrum Disorder-Behavior Problems for Children. Overall, gender was not found to have an effect on the rates of challenging behaviors among children and adolescents with or without ASD. The implications of this finding are discussed along with possible future avenues of investigation. 相似文献

In this experimental clinical study, a first attempt was made to examine the desire for social interaction in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Children with ASD and typically developing (TD) children completed both an explicit measure (self-report) and an implicit measure (Face Turn Approach–Avoidance Task) of the desire for social interaction. On the explicit assessment, children with ASD clearly displayed lower scores reflecting less desire for social interaction than TD children. On the implicit assessment, children with ASD showed a stronger tendency to pull both social and non-social stimuli towards them, which indicates a general automatic tendency towards approach, as compared to the TD children. Possible reasons for this dissociation between the explicit and implicit desire for social interaction are discussed and directions for future research are provided. 相似文献

This study determined differences in health care utilization and health care expenditures between children with and without autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and examined possible reasons for these differences. A retrospective longitudinal study of children aged younger than 18 years both with and without ASD was conducted using the 2008 database of the Ministry of the Interior registry of the disabled persons in tandem with the National Health Insurance Research Database. Propensity score matching for the covariates of age, sex, and parental monthly salary was used to match children at a ratio of 1:3 for observing health care utilization among children with and without ASD from 2008 to 2011. Generalized estimating equation analysis was performed to determine factors that affect health care utilization, such as physician visits, emergency room (ER) visits, hospitalizations, and health care expenditures. After matching was completed, the sample size comprised 3280 children with ASD and 9840 children without ASD. Among the children in the sample, most were boys (86.68%) between the ages of 6–11 years, and the average age of both samples was 9.8 years. After relevant factors were controlled for, the children with ASD yielded an average of 14.2 more annual physician visits and were more likely to visit the ER (OR = 1.12, P < .05) or be hospitalized (OR = 1.48; P < .05) compared with the children without ASD. Compared with the children without ASD, the children with ASD exhibited higher annual physician visit expenditures (NT$26,580 more), higher ER visit expenditures (NT$50 more), higher hospitalization expenditures (NT$5830 more), and NT$32,460 more total health care expenditures (all P < .05). Significant predictors of health care expenditures among the children with ASD were age, parental monthly salary, and severity of comorbidity. The most common reasons for physician visits or hospitalizations among the children with ASD were psychiatric illnesses, respiratory illnesses, and digestive illnesses. The children without ASD most commonly experienced respiratory, digestive, and nervous system or sense organ illnesses. Health care utilization among children with ASD is higher than that among children without ASD. The results of this study can serve as a reference for governmental agencies enacting relevant health care policies. 相似文献

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are common in the general childhood population, and are both serious and lifelong. Tremendous strides have been made in the treatment of these ASD in recent years, particularly with respect to psychological interventions. Given the considerable amount of time and cost involved in providing these interventions, parent training and involvement is a particularly appealing intervention option. This paper is a review and status report on evidence based methods that are available for training parents of children with ASD as therapists. Current trends and future directions are discussed. 相似文献

Recess plays an integral role in the social and emotional development of children given the time provided to engage in interactions with others and practice important social skills. Students with ASD, however, typically fail to achieve even minimal benefit from recess due to social and communication impairments as well as a tendency to withdraw. Implementation of evidence-based interventions such as peer-mediated social skills groups, are necessary to ensure recess is an advantageous learning environment for students with ASD. A multiple-baseline design across participants was used to determine if a functional relationship exists between a social skills instructional program combined with peer networks with school staff as implementers and increases in level of communicative acts for participants with ASD at recess. Results indicate all participants demonstrated an immediate increase in the number of communicative acts with the introduction of the intervention. Implications for practice are discussed. 相似文献

This study evaluated the effectiveness of the ‘most to least’ prompting (MLP) procedure on the teaching of advance movement exploration skills in water to children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Three 6-year old children with ASD, participated in the study and were taught 3 different aquatic skills, essential for movement exploration in water and swimming, in a one-to-one training format at three sessions per week. A multiple probe design across behaviors was used and was replicated across subjects to analyze the effects of MLP. The results of the study showed that MLP was effective in teaching advance movement exploration skills in water to children with ASD. Performing the exploration skills in water was continued after the training process during maintenance and generalization probe sessions. In addition, social validity results reflected that parents’ opinions were positive on the learning skills in terms of functionality, beginning swimming and participation in other aquatic settings for their children. The enjoyable intervention and appealing setting are recommended to increase the repertoire of leisure skills and level of physical activity for children with ASD. 相似文献

BackgroundBetter daily living skills (DLS) are associated with increased independence and positive functional outcomes in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).MethodThe present study aimed to investigate daily living skills (DLS) and the associated factors in 51 children with ASD and intellectual disability (ASD group) and 51 age- and gender-matched controls with intellectual disability (ID group). The severity of the autistic symptoms was measured with the clinician-rated Childhood Autism Rating Scale and the parent-reported Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC) in all children. The mothers also completed the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory and the Basic DLS Questionnaire.ResultsThe ASD group scored lower than the comparison group in the total DLS score, personal hygiene, dressing, safety and interpersonal skills, despite being comparable in the parent-reported quality of life. Regression analysis of the whole sample demonstrated that the child’s age, intellectual level, speech level, autism symptom severity and the monthly household income were independent correlates of the total DLS. Exploratory analyses for each group revealed differential effects of these variables: in the ASD group; a higher speech level and monthly income, while in the ID group; an older age, a higher intellectual level and monthly income and a lower ABC score emerged as significant predictors of higher DLS.ConclusionsDeficient DLS in Turkish children with ASD, given their IQ, suggest that lower level of adaptive skills is inherent in ASD, rather than culture-specific to US and Western Europe. 相似文献

Background
Previous research has found accumulating evidence for atypical reward processing in autism spectrum disorders (ASD), particularly in the context of social rewards. Yet, this line of research has focused largely on positive social reinforcement, while little is known about the processing of negative reinforcement in individuals with ASD.Methods
The present study examined neural responses to social negative reinforcement (a face displaying negative affect) and non-social negative reinforcement (monetary loss) in children with ASD relative to typically developing children, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).Results
We found that children with ASD demonstrated hypoactivation of the right caudate nucleus while anticipating non-social negative reinforcement and hypoactivation of a network of frontostriatal regions (including the nucleus accumbens, caudate nucleus, and putamen) while anticipating social negative reinforcement. In addition, activation of the right caudate nucleus during non-social negative reinforcement was associated with individual differences in social motivation. Conclusions
These results suggest that atypical responding to negative reinforcement in children with ASD may contribute to social motivational deficits in this population. 相似文献18.
A growing body of research provides effective interventions to address the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). However, adolescents with ASDs may face age-specific challenges necessitating the need for contextually relevant and effective interventions. This systematic review examined peer-reviewed intervention research for adolescents (ages 12–21) with ASD. Electronic database searches and ancestral searches were used to identify studies published between 1980 and 2011. 102 studies were identified. A variety of interventions were implemented in these studies to address a wide range of targeted skills and behaviors. Reviewed studies were categorized into seven domains based on the skills and behaviors targeted: (a) social skills; (b) communication skills; (c) challenging behavior; (d) academic skills; (e) vocational skills; (f) independence and self-care; and (g) physical development. Results indicate that effective interventions exist in each category. These results are discussed in relation to participant characteristics, intervention effectiveness, social validity, generalization and maintenance. Generalization, maintenance, and social validity data were gathered in only 34%, 43%, and 31% of the articles, respectively. Additionally, few studies investigated interventions addressing communication, vocational or academic skills. Recommendations for future research are provided. 相似文献

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of a program containing a combination of social skills training (SST) and parenting training (PT) for the enrichment of social interaction skills and reduction of parenting stress for children with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (HFASD) and their parents in Japan. Twenty-two patients with HFASD from second to fourth grade and their parents were assigned to a training group (TG) or treatment as usual (TAU) and compared. The children with HFASD and their parents who were assigned to the TG participated in the manualized program for over a period of five to six months. Subjects provided demographic and medical information and completed teacher and parent-rating scales for social competence (Social Responsiveness Scale-2: SRS-2) and parent-rating of parenting stress (Parental Stress Index: PSI) and mental health (General Health Questionnaire-28: GHQ-28). The participants exhibited some improvements pre-, middle-, and post-treatment, particularly regarding the GHQ, PSI and SRS-2, as reported by parents. However, the social skills improvement reported by teachers was not significant. At the three-month follow-up, parent-rated GHQ and PSI maintained improvement, and SRS-2 achieved the greatest improvement from the baseline rating. Although some findings indicate that a program combination of SST and PT might be useful for enhancing social skills and improving parental stress and mental health, some subscales did not show a sufficient effect. Future research should consider program contents and provide longitudinal follow-up data to test the durability of the treatment. 相似文献

This paper provides a systematic review of 24 studies that addressed the characteristics of friendship in school-age children with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The following questions were addressed: who are the participants, what methodologies have been employed, and what is our understanding of friendship in children with ASD. The results of this review indicate important differences in the manifestation of friendships in individuals with ASD as compared to typical children. While there is consistent evidence for several topographical differences in friendship characteristics, a number of gaps in our knowledge are evident. These include limited data on children who have intellectual disability, and on the perspective of nominated friends as well as circumscribed data on satisfaction with friendship relationships. In addition, there are a number of methodological limitations that restrict interpretation of extant research. Implications for future studies are discussed. 相似文献
