Objectives: This study investigated the perception that dental students have regarding the relevance of oral biology (OB) to dental education and dentistry in general. Moreover, this study analysed students’ attitude towards OB learning approaches and resources. Methods: A questionnaire based on a Likert scale was used to survey pre‐clinical/second (BDS2)‐ and final/fifth (BDS5)‐year dental students at the School of Dentistry of the University of Birmingham (United Kingdom). In comparison, a small group of postgraduate specialist registrars were surveyed to evaluate the attitudes of practising dentists. Results: The results show that all study groups expressed a high level of perceived relevance of OB to dentistry. Students’ perception of OB for dental education, clinical training and practice also scored high. More than 40% of undergraduate students and about 55% of the postgraduates indicated a perceived change in their attitude towards OB with time characterised by increased appreciation of the subject. Lectures were considered as the most important teaching approach, whereas ‘group poster projects’ ranked lowest. Of the different study resources, lecture handouts received the overall highest importance score. Conclusions: The results indicate that dental students considered OB relevant for dental education and dentistry and suggest a positive attitude towards the subject. This study also suggested that dental students prefer teacher‐centred/led teaching rather than student‐directed learning of OB. The article addresses the role of OB and science‐related research projects within the dental curriculum and discusses that close integration of basic sciences with dental education may enrich dental education and overall learning experience.  相似文献

This survey attempted to determine the impact of the periodontal course on oral hygiene and gingival health among 50 senior dental students. The course included the following: patient motivation, instruction in oval hygiene procedures and plaque control, scaling and curellage, temporary splinting and occlusal adjustment. Without advance notice, plaque deposits were scored using the Plaque Index and gingival health was determined using the Gingival Index. The results were collected at the beginning and at the end of the periodontal course (about 2 months). The results were analyzed using the paired t-test. No improvement of either oral hygiene or gingival health was noted at the end of the periodontal course. It seems that even some dental students, who should know the direct relationship between bacterial plaque and periodontal diseases and should be better motivated than the average patient, failed to demonstrate effective oral hygiene. It is difficult to expect an improvement of patient oral hygiene, when the patients have been motivated by students who are unable to perform satisfactory personal oral hygiene themselves. It is suggested that a greater emphasis be placed on patient motivation and instruction in oral hygiene throughout the dental curriculum.  相似文献

Objectives In Finland, a dental subsidization reform, implemented in 2001–2002, abolished age restrictions on subsidized dental care. The aim of this study was to investigate income-related inequality in the perceived oral health and its determinants among adult Finns before and after the reform. Materials and methods Three identical cross-sectional nationally representative postal surveys, concerning perceived oral health and the use of dental services among people born before 1971, were conducted in 2001 (n?=?2157), in 2004 (n?=?1814) and in 2007 (n?=?1671). Three measures of perceived oral health were used: toothache or oral discomfort during the past 12 months, current need for dental care and self-reported oral health status. Concentration index was used to analyse the income-related inequalities. Its decomposition was used to study factors related to the inequalities. Results The proportion of respondents reporting need for dental care decreased from 2001 to 2007, while no changes were seen in reports of toothache or self-reported oral health status. Income-related inequalities in reports of toothache and perceived need for care widened, while the inequality in self-reported oral health remained stable. Most of the inequalities were related to income itself, perceived general health and the time since the last visit to dental care. Conclusions It seems that the income-related inequalities in perceived oral health remained or even widened after the reform.  相似文献

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in oral self-care levels between Japanese dental hygiene students and general nursing students in 1999, and compare them with a similar study in 1990. METHODS: The examination was mainly based upon responses to a questionnaire titled "Hiroshima University--Dental Behavioural Inventory (HU-DBI)". Higher scores of the HU-DBI indicate better oral health attitudes/behaviour. RESULTS: The mean HU-DBI score of the 2nd-year dental hygiene students was significantly greater than that of the 2nd-year nursing students (9.56 and 6.65, respectively; p<0.001), and much higher than those of the 1st-year students at each course (dental hygiene course; 6.30, nursing course; 5.88). Except for the 2nd-year dental hygiene class, there were no significant differences in the HU-DBI score between the 1990 and 1999 subgroups of each class. About 1/3 of the 2nd-year nursing students reported a belief that they may eventually require false teeth, while 6% of the 2nd-year dental hygiene students held this belief. More than 60% of this study sample stated that they put off going to the dentist until they had toothache. The 2nd-year dental hygiene students were more likely to have this attitude than their 1990 peers. Flossing was not popular among the nursing students in either 1990 or 1999. CONCLUSION: Although the difference in the HU-DBI score across time was not major, the variation in HU-DBI and the favourable attitudes/behaviour toward oral health appeared to reflect the differences in schooling between student hygienists and student nurses.  相似文献

This paper discusses the problems involved in the selection of dental students and the need for some form of aptitude testing. It describes the situation in the United Kingdom both in the past and the present, and then describes in detail the situation in North America (both in the United States and Canada). The Dental Admission Test, its history and the research into its development are described with particular emphasis on the dexterity, perceptual and aptitude components of the test. More recent research into dexterity and aptitude testing of dental students is also covered. However, it is apparent that many questions remain unanswered.  相似文献

There is growing evidence to support the contention that interprofessional education (IPE) at both pre and post-qualification levels will improve professionals' abilities to work more effectively in a team and to communicate more effectively with colleagues and patients. This body of evidence, however, is primarily concerned with nursing, medical and associated professionals and students, and there are few studies that include dental students and particularly where learning occurs with the dental care professions (DCP). The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of dental and DCP students to IPE and to highlight some of the barriers to developing programmes for these students. It was also intended to examine the students' awareness of dental and DCP roles and responsibilities. Two questionnaires, the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) and a dental roles and responsibilities questionnaire, were distributed to all 5 years of dental students (n = 189) based at Queen's University Belfast (QUB), both years of the dental hygiene students (n = 8) also based at QUB, as well as to final year dental nursing students based at Belfast Institute of Further and Higher Education (BIFHE) (n = 64). The results indicated that dental and DCP students had a positive attitude to IPE as a means to improve teamwork and communication skills but there are potential obstacles as demonstrated by the differing perceptions of each of the three groups about the roles of the other. Some aspects of practice, involving personal care and advice to patients, were regarded by all groups as a shared role but the dental hygiene students regarded themselves as having a shared role in several tasks identified by dental and dental nurse students as the sole role of the dentist. Dental hygiene students in this study did not see their role as primarily to support the dentist but more as a partner in care. Professional identity and its development are issues that must be considered by dental and DCP educators developing IPE initiatives.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to describe self-reported oral health, oral hygiene habits, and frequency of visits to a dentist among pregnant women in Kuwait. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study with an anonymous structured questionnaire was distributed among 650 pregnant women during May-June 2003, when they were admitted to the maternity ward at the largest government maternity hospital in Kuwait City. The response rate was 93% (n=603). RESULTS: Every fourth respondent was in her first pregnancy, while 36% already had three or more children. Every fifth woman felt that her oral health was poor, and one-third of the women believed that they had periodontal problems currently. About two-thirds of the women were brushing more than once a day and almost all (94%) at least once a day. Over the previous 6 months, 40% had experienced dental pain. Half of the women had visited a dentist during pregnancy, mostly for dental pain. Most of the women had received no instructions concerning oral health care during their pregnancy. CONCLUSIONS: A large proportion of the pregnant women in this study had oral health problems; however, half of the women had not seen a dentist during their pregnancy.  相似文献

As part of a larger cross-country survey of dental students, students from the School of Dentistry, The University of Valparaiso, were invited to participate in a study to describe their use of information and communication technology (ICT). Information was derived from a 124-item questionnaire which included 14 socio-demographic items and 29 items asking about ICT use. ICT items were derived from a University of Birmingham, UK, battery. Data was collected in July and August 2004. A total of 162 of the 249 dental students participated in the study. The average age of students was 21.0 years (SD 2.4 years). The majority of participants (62.1%) were female. All participants had access to a computer, and 96.4% used the Internet. Most students had home Internet connections (73.4%). The most commonly used Internet sites on at least a weekly basis were: email (92.2%); and search engines (88.3%). However, a very few (21.1%) used the Internet to search for dental information for their studies on at least a weekly basis. Furthermore, although the majority (70.4%) found Internet use easy/very easy, 56.2% indicated that any search for information was easy/very easy. The majority (72.2%) indicated that the use of virtual education would not affect their class attendance. The final multivariate model explained 26% of the variance in ICT use, significant predictors for ICT use were gender, year of study, level of difficulty in using Internet, and place of Internet use. However, Internet use was mostly for non-dental purposes.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To investigate self-reported preventive practice of Iranian senior dental students in dental caries management. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: To obtain an estimated sample size of 250 subjects, seven state dental schools were selected based on a stratified random sampling approach. All the senior dental students (n = 327) were asked to voluntarily fill in a self-administered pre-tested questionnaire during the spring term in 2005. In the questionnaire two hypothetical patient cases (a high-risk and a low-risk patient) were presented and the students were asked to express their conceptions on a five-point Likert scale about including each of nine given alternatives in the patients' treatment plans. The respondents' self-reported oral self-care (OSC), preventive knowledge, attitude towards prevention and self-perceived competency in giving preventive care were also assessed. Chi-squared test and logistic regression model served for statistical analyses. RESULTS: A total of 270 students filled in the questionnaire (response rate = 82%). Acquiring high scores of preventive practice as assessed by patient cases was found to be more frequent among those reporting recommended OSC (P = 0.007) and those with higher attitude scores (P < 0.001). Also, those reporting being competent in giving preventive care had higher scores of preventive practice compared with the others (P = 0.02). In the regression model, recommended OSC (P = 0.05, OR = 1.9) and positive attitudes towards preventive dentistry (P = 0.001, OR = 3.3) showed significant association with acquiring highest scores of preventive practice. CONCLUSION: To improve their preventive practice in the future, more emphasis should be placed on the dental students' own oral health behaviour and attitudes related to it.  相似文献

This survey encompasses 3 comparable datasets of newly admitted dental students in 1972 (n=236), 1982 (n=197), and 1994 (n=108). The objectives of the survey were to describe selected socio-demographic characteristics of dental students and to analyze possible changes over time as well as possible changes in the reasons reported by the students for choosing dentistry as a career, their motivations and their expectations concerning the study and the profession of dentistry. The results showed that the ratio of women to men remained unchanged at 6:4 in all 3 cohorts of students and that the students were increasingly recruited from the 2 upper social classes. The motives for choosing dentistry mainly included altruistic motives, the desire for varied work with the opportunity to put theory into practice, economic rewards, and the implicit social status. Compared to the 1972 students, those in 1994 placed greater emphasis on social status as a motive, on the opportunity to work in the biological and scientific field, and on the ready availability of work outside Denmark. The students in all 3 years had strong altruistic motives for choosing dentistry, and it would seem that this stable continuity in the cohort of dental students would ensure the continuous controlled development of dentistry in the new millennium.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relative importance of dental and medical features in relation to perceived oral and general health in a sample of 31-year-old individuals. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The present study used information collected from the longitudinal Cardiff Survey, which commenced in 1981. The initial sample consisted of 1018 11-year-old Caucasian schoolchildren. Three hundred and thirty-seven individuals attended the latest examination in 2001 (aged 31 years). For every individual who attended in 2001, the following information was collected: perceived general and oral health recorded on a five-point Likert scale; self-reported medical history; SF-36v(2) questionnaire; assessment of dental features; and the Index of Complexity, Outcome and Need (ICON). RESULTS: Ninety-four and 82% of individuals reported good-excellent general and oral health, respectively. Females reported a higher level of physical health than males as measured using the SF-36v( 2). Four medical conditions were associated with perceived poor general health: mental [odds ratios (OR); 95% confidence limits (95% CI): 4.5; 1.1-18.4], gastrointestinal (OR 3.4; 95% CI 1.2-9.5) and genitourinary disorders (OR 7; 95% CI 1.6-30.2), and conditions that did not readily fit into a defined category or system (OR 12.8; 95% CI 3.9-42.3). The highest prevalence of dental factors was gingivitis followed by gingival recession and plaque. Photographically assessed dental factors associated with self-reported poor/fair oral health were fillings (OR 0.45; 95% CI 0.2-0.9), root caries/abrasion (OR 0.37; 95% CI 0.1-0.9) and gingivitis (OR 0.31; 95% CI 0.1-0.9). There was a statistically significant association between oral and general health. Of those individuals reporting fair-poor oral health (18%), the proportion also reporting fair-poor general health was 63.6%. Unexpectedly, per-unit increase in ICON score was also significantly associated with fair-poor general health (OR 0.97) with clinically relevant increases of 7 ICON units producing an OR of 0.82. CONCLUSION: The relative importance of the various dental and medical conditions has been identified. Further studies are required to explore the importance of ICON in perceived medical health and importance of the various conditions on oral and general health over different age groups.  相似文献

Objective : The purpose of this study was to identify sources of stress and to evaluate stress levels among Turkish dental students and also to investigate the role of year of study and gender on perceived stressors. Methods : This study included 308 dental students. Dental Environment Stress (DES) questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Spielberger State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) were used to collect data. Also, some factors considered to be effective on stress levels of dental students were questioned. Data were statistically analysed with Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney U tests. Results : The most stress provoking factors were fear of failing the year, completion of clinical requirements and amount of assigned work. Statistically significant differences were found between years of study and gender for many stressors. There was statistically significant difference between years of study and gender for mean DES scores but no statistically significant differences were found between years of study for mean BDI, STAI scores. There was statistically significant difference between genders for STAI‐1. Choice rank of dental school has affected stress levels of dental students. Conclusion : This study showed that perceived sources of stress of clinical students were very similar and stress levels of these students were lower than preclinical students, also gender was effective on stressors and stress levels.  相似文献

Objectives: The objectives of this study of final‐year dental students in 10 classes (1997, 2001—2009) were to examine their self‐reported oral health attitudes and behaviours and describe any trends in these attributes. Participants and methods: Students were surveyed in final semester via an anonymous questionnaire (34 behaviour questions; eight attitude statements). Distributions, trends over time and attitude–behaviour associations were examined. Results: Of 583 students, 459 responded (79%). All tooth‐brushed with fluoride toothpaste; 80% brushed ≥2/day. Overall, 85% flossed; over time flossing behaviour increased significantly (P < 0.05), and those flossing 1—2/day increased (P < 0.005). Over time, significant decreases occurred in those taught toothbrushing (P < 0.001) and flossing (P < 0.05), and in use of mouth rinses (P < 0.05) and tooth cleansing sticks/picks (P < 0.001). Almost all (96%) had received a dental examination; 77% attended a dentist 1—3/year. Between‐meal snacking was common (84%); 71% chewed gum. Although 18% had ever smoked, 5% currently smoked. Most strongly agreed they expected to keep most of their teeth for all their life (76%); their future needs for fillings would be minimal (61%); smoking could adversely affect their teeth or gums (85%); and regular dental attendance was important for their dental health (51%). Congruent attitudes and behaviours favouring oral health were widely held concerning dental attendance, flossing and smoking. Conclusions: Final‐year dental students showed well established, favourable oral hygiene attitudes and behaviours, with evidence to suggest this knowledge was developed whilst in dental school. Despite many ceasing smoking, 5% still smoked. All dental students should receive training in motivational counselling and tobacco cessation to ensure this is included in patient care.  相似文献
