The wrinkling and delamination of stiff thin films adhered to a polymer substrate have important applications in “flexible electronics.” The resulting periodic structures, when used for circuitry, have remarkable mechanical properties because stretching or twisting of the substrate is mostly accommodated through bending of the film, which minimizes fatigue or fracture. To date, applications in this context have used substrate patterning to create an anisotropic substrate-film adhesion energy, thereby producing a controlled array of delamination “blisters.” However, even in the absence of such patterning, blisters appear spontaneously, with a characteristic size. Here, we perform well-controlled experiments at macroscopic scales to study what sets the dimensions of these blisters in terms of the material properties and explain our results by using a combination of scaling and analytical methods. Besides pointing to a method for determining the interfacial toughness, our analysis suggests a number of design guidelines for the thin films used in flexible electronic applications. Crucially, we show that, to avoid the possibility that delamination may cause fatigue damage, the thin film thickness must be greater than a critical value, which we determine.  相似文献

Sterilization processes guarantee the sterility of dental instruments but can negatively affect instrument features by altering their physical and mechanical properties. The endodontic instrumentation can undergo a series of alterations, ranging from corrosion to variation in the cutting angle and then changes in the torsional properties and torsional fatigue resistance. This systematic literature review and meta-analysis aims to investigate alterations to the cutting efficiency of endodontic instruments that are induced by procedures for their disinfection and sterilization. Methodologies adopted for this investigation follow the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) guidelines. The following were used as search terms on PubMed and Scopus: “endodontic sterilization”, “endodontic autoclave”, “cyclic fatigue”, “torsional”, “cutting efficiency”, “sterilization”, “surface characteristics”, and “corrosion”. At the end of the selection process, 36 articles were identified, and seven of them are included in this systematic review. The results of a meta-analysis conducted for the use of 10 autoclaving cycles shows a standardized mean difference (SMD) of 0.80 with a p-value equal to 0.04 with respect to effect on cutting efficiency. The network meta-analysis, through direct and indirect comparison between the different autoclave cycles (0, 1, 5, 10, and 15 cycles), revealed that treatment involving 15 autoclave cycles produced the most robust results in terms of having the greatest effects in terms of altered cutting efficiency with a probability of 57.7% and a SUCRA (surface under the cumulative ranking) of 80%. The alterations in the effects on cutting efficiency appear to be triggered after five cycles of sterilization by heat (autoclave). In conclusion, the meta-analysis of the data indicates that the autoclave sterilization protocol must not be repeated more than five times to preserve cutting efficiency. Within the limitations of this review, we can therefore establish that sterilization by autoclaving alone results in steel and NiTi instruments becoming less efficient in cutting after five cycles, as measured by a reduction in cutting efficiency.  相似文献

Fluoride conversion coatings on Mg present many advantages, among which one can find the reduction of the corrosion rate under “in vivo” or “in vitro” conditions and the promotion of the calcium phosphate deposition. Moreover, the fluoride ions released from MgF2 do not present cytotoxic effects and inhibit the biofilm formation, and thus these treated alloys are very suitable for cardiovascular stents and biodegradable orthopedic implants. In this paper, the biodegradation behavior of four new magnesium biodegradable alloys that have been developed in the laboratory conditions, before and after surface modifications by fluoride conversion (and sandblasting) coatings, are analyzed. We performed structural and surface analysis (XRD, SEM, contact angle) before and after applying different surface treatments. Furthermore, we studied the electrochemical behavior and biodegradation of all experimental samples after immersion test performed in NaCl solution. For a better evaluation, we also used LM and SEM for evaluation of the corroded samples after immersion test. The results showed an improved corrosion resistance for HF treated alloy in the NaCl solution. The chemical composition, uniformity, thickness and stability of the layers generated on the surface of the alloys significantly influence their corrosion behavior. Our study reveals that HF treatment is a beneficial way to improve the biofunctional properties required for the studied magnesium alloys to be used as biomaterials for manufacturing the orthopedic implants.  相似文献

The fuel booster pump is one of the most vulnerable physical assets in an operating engine due to the harsh environmental and operational conditions. However, because of its high structural complexity and extreme operational conditions, the reliability design of the fuel booster pump becomes especially difficult, particularly by means of experiments. Thus, to overcome such a problem, advanced simulation techniques have become adequate solutions for the reliability assessment and analysis of a fuel booster pump at the design stage. In this paper, by considering the effects of the uncertainties of multiple design parameters, fatigue life distributions of the four key components (which are the sealing bolt, spline shaft, graphite ring, and inducer, respectively) in a fuel booster pump were first predicted by PoF-based reliability simulations. Then, through further sensitivity analysis on each key component, the design parameters most sensitive to the component mean fatigue life were detected from a total of 25 candidate parameters. These parameters include the “nominal diameter” and “preload” for the sealing bolt, “major and minor diameters of the small spline” for the spline shaft, “inside diameter” for the graphite ring, and “fuel pressure on the blade front surface” for the inducer, respectively. These sensitivity results were found to be in good agreement with the results from the qualitative cause analysis on each key component.  相似文献

Surface integrity induced by finishing processes significantly affects the functional performance of machined components. In this work, three kinds of finishing processes, i.e., precision hard turning, conventional grinding, and sequential grinding and honing, were used for the finish machining of AISI 52100 bearing steel rings. The surface integrity induced by these finishing processes was studied via SEM investigations and residual stress measurements. To investigate rolling contact fatigue performance, contact fatigue tests were performed on a twin-disc testing machine. As the main results, the SEM observations show that precision hard turning and grinding introduce microstructural alterations. Indeed, in precision hard turning, a fine white layer (<1 μm) is observed on the top surface, followed by a thermally affected zone in the subsurface, and in grinding only, a white layer with 5 μm thickness is observed. However, no microstructural changes are found after sequential grinding and honing processes. White layers induced by precision hard turning and grinding possess compressive residual stresses. Grinding and sequential grinding and honing processes generate similar residual stress distributions, which are maximum and compressive at the machined surface and tensile at the subsurface depth of 15 μm. Precision hard turning generates a “hook”-shaped residual stress profile with maximum compressive value at the subsurface depth and thus contributes as a prenominal factor to the obtainment of the longest fatigue life with respect to other finishing processes. Due to the high quality of surface roughness (Ra = 0.05 μm), honing post grinding improves the fatigue life of bearing rings by 2.6 times in comparison with grinding. Subsurface compressive residual stresses, as well as low surface roughness, are key parameters for extending bearing fatigue life.  相似文献

Most studies on the corrosion inhibition performance of organic molecules and (nano)materials were conducted within “carbon steel/1.0 M HCl” solution system using similar experimental and theoretical methods. As such, the numerous research findings in this system are sufficient to conduct comparative studies to select the best-suited inhibitor type that generally refers to a type of inhibitor with low concentration/high inhibition efficiency, nontoxic properties, and a simple and cost-economic synthesis process. Before data collection, to help readers have a clear understanding of some crucial elements for the evaluation of corrosion inhibition performance, we introduced the mainstay of corrosion inhibitors studies involved, including the corrosion and inhibition mechanism of carbon steel/HCl solution systems, evaluation methods of corrosion inhibition efficiency, adsorption isotherm models, adsorption thermodynamic parameters QC calculations, MD/MC simulations, and the main characterization techniques used. In the classification and statistical analysis section, organic compounds or (nano)materials as corrosion inhibitors were classified into six types according to their molecular structural characteristics, molecular size, and compound source, including drug molecules, ionic liquids, surfactants, plant extracts, polymers, and polymeric nanoparticles. We outlined the important conclusions obtained from recent literature and listed the evaluation methods, characterization techniques, and contrastable experimental data of these types of inhibitors when used for carbon steel corrosion in 1.0 M HCl solution. Finally, statistical analysis was only performed based on these data from carbon steel/1.0 M HCl solution system, from which some conclusions can contribute to reducing the workload of the acquisition of useful information and provide some reference directions for the development of new corrosion inhibitors.  相似文献

This work presents an optical non-contact technique to evaluate the fatigue damage state of CFRP structures measuring the irregularity factor of the surface. This factor includes information about surface topology and can be measured easily on field, by techniques such as optical perfilometers. The surface irregularity factor has been correlated with stiffness degradation, which is a well-accepted parameter for the evaluation of the fatigue damage state of composite materials. Constant amplitude fatigue loads (CAL) and realistic variable amplitude loads (VAL), representative of real in- flight conditions, have been applied to “dog bone” shaped tensile specimens. It has been shown that the measurement of the surface irregularity parameters can be applied to evaluate the damage state of a structure, and that it is independent of the type of fatigue load that has caused the damage. As a result, this measurement technique is applicable for a wide range of inspections of composite material structures, from pressurized tanks with constant amplitude loads, to variable amplitude loaded aeronautical structures such as wings and empennages, up to automotive and other industrial applications.  相似文献

The construction industry has extensively demanded novel green inhibition strategies for the conservation and protection of carbon steel-reinforced concrete structures. For the first time, the effect of Azadirachta indica leaf extract (Neem) as a potential corrosion inhibitor of carbon steel in reinforced concrete under corrosion in saline simulated media was evaluated. To assess the corrosion inhibition behavior of the Neem natural organic extract, three inorganic commercial inhibitors were tested to compare following the criteria established by Stratful for half-cell potential under a simulated chloride environment. Moreover, the effect of concrete integrity by the Neem treatment was recorded after different temperature conditions, slump, weight alteration, air content, compressive strength, and chloride-ions penetration. The results suggested that the Neem treatments did not alter the concrete integrity and the physicochemical parameters. We reached a promoted long-term corrosion protection of 95% after 182 days of evaluation. Thus far, our current results open up a new promising “green” road to the conservation of carbon steel in reinforced concrete for the construction industry.  相似文献

In this work, the wetting behaviors of lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) on corroded 316L, T91, and CLAM surfaces were studied. The wettability of LBE on virgin and corroded surfaces were tested at 450 °C by using the sessile-drop (SD) method after immersing the samples in LBE with saturated oxygen concentration for 400, 800, and 1200 h at 450 °C. Additionally, the morphology, as well as element distribution of the corrosion structure, were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The results showed that the virgin samples of three materials are non-wetting to LBE, and the formation of corrosion structures further reduces the wettability. Besides, the thickness of the corrosion layer formed on the 316L surface grew more slowly than the other two steel, which results in better corrosion resistance of austenitic steel 316L than that of ferritic/martensitic steels T91 and CLAM at 450 °C. Meanwhile, the morphology and distribution of corrosion products are important factors affecting the wettability of the steel surface. The formation of corrosion products with high roughness as well as disorder results in a significant reduction in surface wettability.  相似文献

Solder joint fatigue is one of the critical failure modes in ball-grid array packaging. Because the reliability test is time-consuming and geometrical/material nonlinearities are required for the physics-driven model, the AI-assisted simulation framework is developed to establish the risk estimation capability against the design and process parameters. Due to the time-dependent and nonlinear characteristics of the solder joint fatigue failure, this research follows the AI-assisted simulation framework and builds the non-sequential artificial neural network (ANN) and sequential recurrent neural network (RNN) architectures. Both are investigated to understand their capability of abstracting the time-dependent solder joint fatigue knowledge from the dataset. Moreover, this research applies the genetic algorithm (GA) optimization to decrease the influence of the initial guessings, including the weightings and bias of the neural network architectures. In this research, two GA optimizers are developed, including the “back-to-original” and “progressing” ones. Moreover, we apply the principal component analysis (PCA) to the GA optimization results to obtain the PCA gene. The prediction error of all neural network models is within 0.15% under GA optimized PCA gene. There is no clear statistical evidence that RNN is better than ANN in the wafer level chip-scaled packaging (WLCSP) solder joint reliability risk estimation when the GA optimizer is applied to minimize the impact of the initial AI model. Hence, a stable optimization with a broad design domain can be realized by an ANN model with a faster training speed than RNN, even though solder fatigue is a time-dependent mechanical behavior.  相似文献

Following striate cortex damage in monkeys and humans there can be residual function mediated by parallel visual pathways. In humans this can sometimes be associated with a “feeling” that something has happened, especially with rapid movement or abrupt onset. For less transient events, discriminative performance may still be well above chance even when the subject reports no conscious awareness of the stimulus. In a previous study we examined parameters that yield good residual visual performance in the “blind” hemifield of a subject with unilateral damage to the primary visual cortex. With appropriate parameters we demonstrated good discriminative performance, both with and without conscious awareness of a visual event. These observations raise the possibility of imaging the brain activity generated in the “aware” and the “unaware” modes, with matched levels of discrimination performance, and hence of revealing patterns of brain activation associated with visual awareness. The intact hemifield also allows a comparison with normal vision. Here we report the results of a functional magnetic resonance imaging study on the same subject carried out under aware and unaware stimulus conditions. The results point to a shift in the pattern of activity from neocortex in the aware mode, to subcortical structures in the unaware mode. In the aware mode prestriate and dorsolateral prefrontal cortices (area 46) are active. In the unaware mode the superior colliculus is active, together with medial and orbital prefrontal cortical sites.  相似文献

This study focuses on the dynamic compression performance of corroded steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) exposed to drying–wetting chloride cycles by a 37 mm diameter split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system. Three steel fiber contents (0.5%, 1.0%, 2.0%, by volume) were incorporated into concrete, and samples were subjected to drying–wetting cycles for different corrosion durations (30 days, 60 days, 90 days) after 28 days age. The sample damage mode, stress–strain curve and the dynamic compression performance of corroded SFRC were compared with plain concrete. Through the experimental data, strain-rate effect, fiber reinforcement effect and the corrosion duration influence on the impact compression property of SFRC were identified. The dynamic increase factor results of these samples were compared with the existing models in previous published literature. An empirical dynamic increase factor profile characterization model considering fiber content, corrosion duration and strain-rate is proposed.  相似文献

An experimental methodology was developed for estimating a very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) life of the aluminum alloy AMG-6 subjected to preliminary deformation. The analysis of fatigue damage staging is based on the measurement of elastic modulus decrement according to “in situ” data of nonlinear dynamics of free-end specimen vibrations at the VHCF test. The correlation of fatigue damage staging and fracture surface morphology was studied to establish the scaling properties and kinetic equations for damage localization, “fish-eye” nucleation, and transition to the Paris crack kinetics. These equations, based on empirical parameters related to the structure of the material, allows us to estimate the number of cycles for the nucleation and advance of fatigue crack.  相似文献

More than two decades ago, my coauthors, Raymond Bradley and Malcolm Hughes, and I published the now iconic “hockey stick” curve. It was a simple graph, derived from large-scale networks of diverse climate proxy (“multiproxy”) data such as tree rings, ice cores, corals, and lake sediments, that captured the unprecedented nature of the warming taking place today. It became a focal point in the debate over human-caused climate change and what to do about it. Yet, the apparent simplicity of the hockey stick curve betrays the dynamicism and complexity of the climate history of past centuries and how it can inform our understanding of human-caused climate change and its impacts. In this article, I discuss the lessons we can learn from studying paleoclimate records and climate model simulations of the “Common Era,” the period of the past two millennia during which the “signal” of human-caused warming has risen dramatically from the background of natural variability.

Clearly, there is a cautionary tale told by the hockey stick curve in the unprecedented warming that we are causing, but the lessons from the paleoclimate record of the Common Era (CE) go far beyond that. What might we infer, for example, about the role of dynamical mechanisms relevant to climate change impacts today from their past responses to natural drivers? Examples are the El Niño phenomenon, the Asian summer monsoon, and the North Atlantic Ocean “conveyor belt” circulation. Are there potential “tipping point” elements within these climate subsystems? How has sea level changed in past centuries, and what does it tell us about future coastal risk? Are there natural long-term oscillations, evident in the paleoclimate record, that might compete with human-caused climate change today? Can we assess the “sensitivity” of the climate to ongoing human-caused increases in greenhouse gas concentrations from examining how climate has responded to natural factors in the past? Also, can better estimates of past trends inform assessments of how close we are to critical “dangerous” warming thresholds? In this article, I seek to address such questions and offer thoughts about ways forward to more confident answers.  相似文献

Specialised modelling and simulation methods implementing simplified physical models are valuable generators of insight. Template-based geometric simulation is a specialised method for modelling flexible framework structures made up of rigid units. We review the background, development and implementation of the method, and its applications to the study of framework materials such as zeolites and perovskites. The “flexibility window” property of zeolite frameworks is a particularly significant discovery made using geometric simulation. Software implementing geometric simulation of framework materials, “GASP”, is freely available to researchers.  相似文献

The present study aims to evaluate the stress corrosion behavior of additively manufactured austenitic stainless steel produced by the wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) process. This was examined in comparison with its counterpart, wrought alloy, by electrochemical analysis in terms of potentiodynamic polarization and impedance spectroscopy and by slow strain rate testing (SSRT) in a corrosive environment. The microstructure assessment was performed using optical and scanning electron microscopy along with X-ray diffraction analysis. The obtained results indicated that in spite of the inherent differences in microstructure and mechanical properties between the additively manufactured austenitic stainless steel and its counterpart wrought alloy, their electrochemical performance and stress corrosion susceptibility were similar. The corrosion attack in the additively manufactured alloy was mainly concentrated at the interface between the austenitic matrix and the secondary ferritic phase. In the case of the counterpart wrought alloy with a single austenitic phase, the corrosion attack was manifested by uniform pitting evenly scattered at the external surface. Both alloys showed ductile failure in the form of “cap and cone” fractures in post-SSRT experiments in corrosive environment.  相似文献

AISI 316L stainless steels are widely employed in applications where durability is crucial. For this reason, an accurate prediction of its behaviour is of paramount importance. In this work, the spotlight is on the cyclic response and low-cycle fatigue performance of this material, at room temperature. Particularly, the first aim of this work is to experimentally test this material and use the results as input to calibrate the parameters involved in a kinematic and isotropic nonlinear plasticity model (Chaboche and Voce). This procedure is conducted through a newly developed calibration procedure to minimise the parameter estimates errors. Experimental data are eventually used also to estimate the strain–life curve, namely the Manson–Coffin curve representing the 50% failure probability and, afterwards, the design strain–life curves (at 5% failure probability) obtained by four statistical methods (i.e., deterministic, “Equivalent Prediction Interval”, univariate tolerance interval, Owen’s tolerance interval for regression). Besides the characterisation of the AISI 316L stainless steel, the statistical methodology presented in this work appears to be an efficient tool for engineers dealing with durability problems as it allows one to select fatigue strength curves at various failure probabilities depending on the sought safety level.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between mental health (posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety disorder, and burnout) and intention to resign, and influencing factors regarding nurses involved with COVID-19 patients in A Prefecture as subjects. The design is a cross-sectional questionnaire-based study. Methods are conducted between August 4 and October 26, 2020. Basic attributes (gender, age, years of experience, etc.) were examined. Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, Impact of Event Scale-Revised, Maslach Burnout Inventory, “intent to resign,” were used to collect data from nurses working at hospitals treating patients with COVID-19 in Japan. As a result, between 20% and 30% of nurses involved with patients with COVID-19 are in a state of high mental distress. Regarding the associations between psychiatric symptoms and intention to resign, “I want to quit being a nurse” was affected by “cynicism” and “professional efficacy”; “I want to change hospitals/wards” was affected by “cynicism”; and “subthreshold depression,” “anxiety disorder,” and “burnout” affected “I want to continue working as a nurse.” The increase in the number of patients with COVID-19 was a factor affecting mental health and intention to resign. When the number of patients increased, anxiety disorders and intention to resign also increased. Damage from harmful rumors increased the severity of every psychiatric symptom. To prepare for a pandemic such as COVID-19, it is necessary in normal times to construct psychological support systems and community systems to prevent damage from harmful rumors.  相似文献

Ketogenic diets appear promising for obesity, diabetes, cancer, and other illnesses. Because older patients are more likely to contend with such illnesses and because of a paucity of dietary outcomes among these patients, we examined ketogenic diets in older patients. This multisite study focused on patients (≥65 years of age) on a ketogenic diet. Medical records were identified with the keywords “keto,” “ketogenic,” and “Atkins.” Records were reviewed in detail with extraction of direct quotations to substantiate observations. We report on 200 consecutive patients with a median age of 70 years. Reasons for diet included weight loss, diabetes, and cancer; the majority remained on the diet for >1 month. In 134 (67%: 95% confidence interval: 60, 73%), the ketogenic diet appeared beneficial: 93 of 117 (79%) who sought weight loss lost weight (“She has lost 15 pounds and plans to lose another 8”); 36 of 67 (54%) who sought glucose control appeared to achieve the latter (“He has gone on a ketogenic diet and has been able to bring his sugars down significantly”); and 5 of 8 (63%) who sought improved cancer outcomes appeared to derive them (“He attributes part of the control of his cancer and increased QOL to adopting the keto for cancer diet”). Adverse events occurred in 30 patients (15%): dyslipidemia (n = 14), constipation (n = 9), sub-therapeutic international normalized ratio (n = 3), pancreatitis (n = 2), diarrhea (n = 1), and fatigue (n = 1).Trials that test ketogenic diets for a variety of illnesses should enroll older adults.  相似文献

Typical non-metallic inclusions in two industrial low-carbon steels for oil pipelines were investigated as three-dimensional objects on film filters after electrolytic extraction and filtration of metal samples. A method of soft chemical extraction using a 10%AA electrolyte was used to study the initial corrosion process in the steel matrix surrounding various non-metallic inclusions. To determine and compare “corrosive” inclusions and their influence on the initial stages of corrosion of the adjacent layer of the steel matrix, quantitative parameters (such as the diameter of the corrosion crater (Dcr) and pit (Dpit), and the relative dissolution coefficient of the metal matrix (KD) around various inclusions) were determined after chemical extraction. It was found that CaO-Al2O3-MgO oxides and TiN inclusions did not cause an initial corrosion of the steel matrix surrounding these inclusions. However, tensile stresses in the steel matrix occurred around CaS inclusions (or complex inclusions containing a CaS phase), which contributed to the initiation of corrosion around these inclusions.  相似文献
