Diurnal cycle in salivary cortisol levels in common marmosets   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A noninvasive method of saliva sampling was used to assess the diurnal cortisol rhythm from 0900 to 1700 hr in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus). The levels of cortisol were highest in the morning and declined significantly over the day. Individual marmosets varied in the magnitude of the cycle, and the greatest individual variability occurred in the morning levels. The decrease in cortisol levels was more rapid after than before the midday feeding period in subordinate marmosets (aged 53-63 months) compared to dominant marmosets (aged 79-80 months), and overall, the levels of cortisol were higher in the subordinate marmosets. We found no effect of sex on cortisol levels across the cycle.  相似文献

Whereas psychosocial risk factors increase the risk for disease, psychosocial resources reduce this risk. To examine a possible pathway for these effects, the relations between saliva cortisol levels and psychosocial factors were studied in a random sample of 257 men and women aged 30 to 64 years. Saliva samples were collected at home on waking, 30 min after waking, and in the evening. A flatter diurnal rhythm of cortisol, that is, lower deviations between awakening and evening cortisol levels, was related to high levels of psychosocial risk factors (cynicism, depression, and vital exhaustion), whereas a steeper diurnal rhythm was related to psychosocial resources (social support and coping), general health, and well-being (all p < .05). Our results support earlier suggestions that the capacity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal-axis to dynamically respond to stress is 1 pathway for observed effects of psychosocial factors regarding risk for disease development.  相似文献

In two separate studies, specimens of saliva from 57 individuals over the age of 65 years (mean age, 76.7 years) and 37 persons under the age of 40 years (mean age, 28.8 years) were examined for concentrations of IgA as functions of volume, total protein, and electrolyte conductivity; some were also tested for IgG and IgM content. The results show that older persons have higher concentrations of these solutes in their saliva than do younger controls. This suggests that the ability to secrete IgA into saliva does not diminish significantly with aging.  相似文献

Both attachment insecurity and maternal depression are thought to affect infants' emotional and physiological regulation. In the current study, Strange Situation Procedure (SSP) attachment classifications, and cortisol stress reactivity and diurnal rhythm were assessed at 14 months in a prospective cohort study of 369 mother–infant dyads. Maternal lifetime depression was diagnosed prenatally using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI). Insecure‐resistant infants showed the largest increase in cortisol levels from pre‐ to post‐SSP; the effect was even stronger when they had depressive mothers. Disorganized children showed a more flattened diurnal cortisol pattern compared to nondisorganized children. The aim of this study was to observe the influence of physical exercise and training on saliva cortisol concentrations in women. Three groups of adult women were studied: one group of sedentary controls (n = 7) and two groups of sportswomen who competed in either handball (n = 14) or swimming (n = 10) at a national level. These sportswomen gave six saliva samples during a day that included exercise which was part of their annual training programme. We noticed a significant increase in saliva cortisol concentration after exercise in the handball players (6 p.m. vs 7.30 p.m. P < 0.05) which did not appear in the swimmers or the sedentary group. There was no difference between the sedentary group and the swimmers for each sample of the day. These results showed that the type of sport played seemed to influence the concentration of saliva cortisol, the type of stress involved, the respective haemodynamic conditions of swimming and running and thermal stress also playing a part. Moreover, it seemed that the level of performance influenced the secretion of cortisol in the saliva.  相似文献

The diurnal rhythm of mitotic activity in cells of the interalveolar septa of the lungs of 20-day rat fetuses corresponds to the rhythm in the adult. In rats aged 1, 3, and 10 days the curve of diurnal fluctuations of mitotic activity has a maximum in the evening and a minimum in the morning. After the 17th day of postnatal development the definitive diurnal rhythm with a maximum of the number of mitoses in the morning and the minimum in the evening is established in the lung tissue. The mean diurnal mitotic activity, although very high in the fetus, falls sharply immediately after birth. Summary Eight healthy male college students were selected and eight noise exposure conditions were planned. The noise exposure time of all the experiments was 14 h. Measurement of the TTS growth at 4 kHz was investigated during these 14 h. Saliva collected every 3 h was also examined for cortisol throughout the 24-h period. The exposure noises used in this experiment were pink noise and pure tone of 3 kHz. The time patterns of trapezoidal noise were as follows. The rise and decay times were 1 s respectively and the peak level was 1 s for the (A I type), being 500 ms and 1.5 s respectively for the (A II type).Three measurement were made:TTSUnder intermittent noise exposure at 80 dB(A), exposure of 20% of the on fraction induced significant TTS growth, but exposure of 13% of the on fraction did not induce TTS growth. Under exposure at 75 dB(A), exposure of 66% of the on fraction did not induce TTS growth. Under pure tone exposure of 3 kHz at 75 dB(A), exposures of 20% and 30% of the on fraction did not induce TTS growth. There was a significant difference between the TTS induced by a steady state of 73 dB (A) (Leq of Exp. 2) and that of Exp. 2.Urinary 17-OHCS LevelDuring the noise exposure period (14 h), there was a statistically significant difference between the urinary 17-OHCS level of the control condition and that of Exp. 3. The decrease in responsiveness of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenocortical (HPA) system is marked over the first months of life. Seventy-eight healthy infants (44 girls), 7 to 15 weeks old, were given a laboratory mock physical examination. Salivary cortisol samples were collected pre- and postexamination and at home. Behavioral state during the examination and home sleep/wake activity were measured. Subjects younger than 11 weeks showed an increase in pre- to postexamination cortisol, while older subjects did not. Further, there was no decrease in behavioral distress to the examination with age. Infants who showed an early-morning peak (EMP) in home cortisol levels were significantly older and were likely to be those who slept through the night. However, the presence of an EMP was not associated with a lack of cortisol response to the examination. The decrease in cortisol responsiveness witnessed around the age of 3 months is presumably due to other processes associated with age, and not with the expression of the day–night rhythm in basal cortisol. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Cortisol levels in plasma were measured in 122 depressed patients at 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. on the first day and at 8:00 a.m., 4:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. on the second day after oral administration of dexamethasone. Some of the patients were studied before and after medication so the total number of plasma cortisol level examinations came to 173. All patients had to describe the state of their sleep with the help of a questionnaire. The temperature and pulse of 92 patients were taken hourly from 7:00 a.m. to 11:11 p.m. for two consecutive days where the total measurements came to 34. 27 patients out of these had their blood pressure taken. A control group of 65 healthy persons without somatic and psychic disorders was tested at the same time. We found out that plasma cortisol levels in patients with disturbed sleep were higher compared to the group with good sleep. It was also noticed that younger patients and males had higher plasma cortisol level. Patients with disturbed sleep had higher Mesors (midline-estimating statistic of rhythm, ‘Mesor’) of temperature, pulse and systolic blood pressure. Healthy persons had significantly lower pulse Mesors compared to patients with good and disturbed sleep. The percentage distribution of suppressors and nonsuppressors showed no differences by sex, age and sleep disturbances.  相似文献

This study examined psychosocial influences on hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity in 105 4-year-old children transitioning to primary school. Measuring before, during, and after school transition over a period of up to 12 months, salivary cortisol was assessed on awakening and early evening. Parents reported child temperament and teachers recorded adaptive behavior. Whilst cortisol at awakening and early evening increased from baseline to school transition, effects were not significant. A significant decrease occurred between transition and follow-up and from baseline to follow-up for both awakening and evening cortisol. Poorer effortful control was associated with high morning and steeper diurnal slope of cortisol at transition whilst surgency/extroversion was associated individually with greater morning and evening cortisol at transition and adaptation. Greater increase in internalizing social isolation during the first 6 months of school in more surgent/extrovert children predicted higher morning and evening cortisol at follow-up. This study is the first to explore these adaptive relationships over a 12-month period and supports social isolation over time as a key element in developmental endocrine activation.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine adrenocortical activity (basal, diurnal variation, and responses to social stressors) in adolescents at risk for psychopathology. Salivary cortisol levels were examined in normally developing and at-risk youth with internalizing and externalizing symptoms ranging from subclinical to clinical levels. Adolescents showed expected patterns of diurnal variation, with high early morning cortisol levels and a pattern of decline throughout the day. Females showed higher midday and late afternoon levels than males, and these patterns interacted with risk status. Internalizing problems sometimes were associated with gradual rather than steep declines in basal cortisol production. Both immediate and delayed cortisol reactivity to a social performance stressor were associated with internalizing symptoms. There was no evidence of relations between externalizing problems and underarousal of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) system. These and other results suggest that gender is an important moderating factor linking psychopathology. development, and context with HPA axis functioning in adolescence.  相似文献

We studied the relationship between the phase and the amplitude of the circadian temperature rhythm using questionnaires that measure individual differences in personality variables, variables that relate to circadian rhythms, age and sex. The ambulatory core body temperature of 101 young men and 71 young women was recorded continuously over 6 days. The temperature minimum (Tmin) and amplitude (Tamp) were derived by fitting a complex cosine curve to each day's data for each subject. Participants completed the Horne-Ostberg Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), the Circadian Type Inventory (CTI) and the MMPI-2, scored for the Psychopathology-5 (PSY-5) personality variables. We found that the average Tmin occurred at 03.50 h for morning-types (M-types), 05.02 h for the neither-types and 06.01 h for evening-types (E-types). Figures were presented that could provide an estimate of Tmin given an individual's morningness-eveningness score or weekend wake time. The Tmin occurred at approximately the middle of the 8-h sleep period, but it occurred closer to wake in subjects with later Tmin values and increasing eveningness. In other words, E-types slept on an earlier part of their temperature cycle than M-types. This difference in the phase-relationship between temperature and sleep may explain why E-types are more alert at bedtime and sleepier after waking than M-types. The Tmin occurred about a half-hour later for men than women. Another interesting finding included an association between circadian rhythm temperature phase and amplitude, in that subjects with more delayed phases had larger amplitudes. The greater amplitude was due to lower nocturnal temperature.  相似文献

Hormone analysis is a valuable tool for understanding how physiology and behavior interact. Cortisol in hair has recently been examined as a measure of longer-term hormone output. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between other androgens in hair and anthropometric measures. In a child sample (n = 114, mean age: 8.5 years, 66 females) levels of cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and testosterone were assayed in the 0–3 cm section proximal to scalp. The 3–6 cm segment within a subsample of female participants (n = 35) was examined and compared. Results showed that testosterone strongly correlated with DHEA, and moderately correlated with cortisol (0–3 cm only). Higher hormone concentrations were present in the 3–6 cm segment. Finally, there was a weak positive association between DHEA and height. The replication of previously identified associations between androgens, particularly testosterone-DHEA, and with developmental measures suggests hair may offer a valid method of hormone measurement for DHEA and testosterone.  相似文献

Although humans are diurnal in behaviour, animal models used for the study of circadian rhythms are mainly restricted to nocturnal rodents. This study focussed on the circadian behaviour of a rodent from South Africa that has a preference for daylight, the four-striped field mouse, Rhabdomys pumilio. In order to characterise the behavioural pattern of daily activity, locomotor rhythms were studied under different light regimes using an automated data recording system. Under conditions of natural daylight, which include dawn and dusk transitions, R. pumilio exhibited activity restricted to the daytime period. Activity was concentrated around morning and evening with a decrease during mid-day. A similar diurnal preference pattern of behaviour was recorded under a light-dark cycle of artificial illumination. Under conditions of constant darkness, the four-striped field mouse exhibited a free-running circadian rhythm of locomotor activity with activity concentrated during the subjective day. Free-running rhythms varied greatly between individuals, from slightly less to slightly more than 24 h (range = 23.10 to 24.80 h). Under conditions of constant light, the mice were more active during subjective day, but the free-running rhythm in all individuals was consistently longer than 24 h (range = 24.30 to 24.79 h).  相似文献

With salivary assessment of steroid hormones increasing, more work is needed to address fundamental properties of steroid hormone levels in humans. Using a test-retest design and radioimmunoassay assessment of salivary steroids, we tested the reliability of testosterone, cortisol, and progesterone levels across two weeks, as well as the effects of oral contraceptives, menstrual cycle phase, and time of day on steroid hormone levels. Testosterone and cortisol were found to be highly reliable in both sexes. Progesterone was found to be reliable after collapsing across sex. Oral contraceptive use was associated with lower levels of testosterone, but did not affect cortisol. Contrary to expectations, oral contraceptives also did not affect progesterone. Menstrual cycle was found to affect levels of progesterone, but not testosterone or cortisol. Time of day had an effect on cortisol, on progesterone only at one testing time, and no effect on testosterone. We explored the interhormone correlations among testosterone, progesterone, and cortisol. All three hormones were positively correlated with one another in men. In women, progesterone was positively correlated with testosterone and cortisol, but testosterone and cortisol were uncorrelated.  相似文献
