A tumor composed of astrocytoma and sarcoma
Summary A brain tumor is described composed of the following types of tissue: Astrocytoma of first degree malignancy — sarcoma — astrocytoma of second degree malignancy. The case history and the microscopic anatomy permit the conclusion that the tumor has probably arisen in this order. The measurements of the late mitotic phases confirm the previously reported finding, namely that these phases persist for a relatively longer period of time in a mesenchymal than in a gliomatous tumor. The histochemistry suggests phagocytotic activity of tumor cells in the border zone of both tumor types, pointing to an interchangeable function of the two types of cells.
