The current paper applied the theory of planned behavior (TPB; Ajzen and Fishbein 1988) to understand how impulsive personality traits and attitudes concerning e-cig use relate to the likelihood of electronic cigarette (e-cig) use. Seven hundred fourteen participants (mean age = 34.04, SD = 10.89, 48.6% female) completed cross-sectional measures of e-cig use attitudes (CEAC) and the Short UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale. A structural path analysis suggested that urgency and deficits in conscientiousness were significantly related to e-cig attitudes (CFI = 0.99, TLI = 0.99, RMSEA = 0.02; urgency: β = 0.32, p = .001; deficits in conscientiousness: β = ?0.48, p < .001). E-cig attitude scores were significantly higher for e-cig users than non-users, β = 0.85, p < .001. There was no significant direct path from impulsive personality traits to e-cig use. Findings provide initial support for a model in which impulsive traits are related to e-cig use through positive e-cig attitudes.  相似文献

Research into Internet gaming disorder (IGD) literature largely uses cross-sectional designs and seldom examines gaming context-related factors. Therefore, the present study combined a cross-sectional and longitudinal design to examine depression and the gamer-avatar relationship (GAR) as risk factors in the development of IGD among emerging adults. IGD behaviors of 125 gamers (64 online gamers, Mage = 23.3 years, SD = 3.4; 61 offline gamers, Mage = 23.0 years, SD = 3.4) were assessed using the nine-item Internet Gaming Disorder Scale Short Form (IGDS-SF9; Pontes and Griffiths Revista Argentina de Ciencias del Comportamiento, 7, 102–118, 2015a; Computers in Human Behavior, 45, 137–143, 2015b). The Self-Presence Scale (Ratan and Dawson Communication Research, 2015) and the Beck Depression Inventory (Beck et al. 1996) were also used to assess gamers’ levels of GAR and depressive symptoms, respectively. Regression and moderation analyses revealed that depression and the GAR act as individual risk factors in the development of IGD over time. Furthermore, the GAR exacerbates the IGD risk effect of depression.  相似文献

The present study investigates reciprocal associations between positive parenting, parental monitoring, CU traits, and ODD in children assessed at age 3 and again at age 6. Data were collected from a sample of preschoolers (N = 419; 51.58 % female) through diagnostic interviews and questionnaires answered by parents and teachers. Structural equation modeling revealed a bidirectional relationship between poor monitoring and ODD, with poor monitoring at age 3 predicting ODD at age 6 (β = 0.11, p < 0.05), and ODD at age 3 predicting poor monitoring at age 6 (β = 0.10, p < 0.05). While poor monitoring at age 3 predicted CU traits at age 6 (β = 0.11, p < 0.05), CU traits at age 3 predicted positive parenting (β = 0.09, p < 0.05) and ODD (β = 0.13, p < 0.05) at age 6. Results have important implications for early targeted parenting interventions for CU traits and ODD.  相似文献

Purpose

Community treatment orders (CTOs) are widely used internationally despite a lack of evidence supporting their effectiveness. Most effectiveness studies are relatively short (12-months or less) and focus on clinical symptoms and service data, while a little attention is given to patients’ social outcomes and broader welfare. We tested the association between the duration of CTO intervention and patients’ long-term social outcomes.

Methods

A sub-sample (n = 114) of community-based patients from the Oxford Community Treatment Order Evaluation Trial (OCTET) were interviewed 48 months after randomisation. Multivariate regression models were used to examine the association between the duration of the CTO intervention and social outcomes as measured by the social network schedule, Objective Social Outcomes Index, Euro-Qol EQ-5D-3L (EQ-5D), and Oxford Capabilities Questionnaire for Mental Health.

Results

No significant association was found between the duration of CTO intervention and social network size (IRR = 0.996, p = .63), objective social outcomes (B = ?0.003, p = .77), health-related quality of life (B = 0.001, p = .77), and capabilities (B = 0.046, p = .41). There were no between-group differences in social outcomes when outcomes were stratified by original arm of randomisation. Patients had a mean of 10.2 (SD = 5.9) contacts in their social networks, 42% of whom were relatives.

Conclusions

CTO duration was not associated with improvements in patients’ social outcomes even over the long term. This study adds to growing concerns about CTO effectiveness and the justification for their continued use.

Important attention has been given to the assessment of patients’ perspectives on treatment, especially as outcomes have been typically evaluated by clinicians. This study examined the association between patient and clinician ratings on perceived improvement and symptomatology changes for an older adult population participating in an ongoing psycho-educational program. Pre-post measures including depression (GDS), anxiety (BAI) and general well-being (GWBS) were collected in a sample of 34 older adults (age = 71.32 ± 6.46 years). Post-testing data included perceived improvement rated by patients, and clinician assessment of depressive symptoms (CS-GDS). Results indicate significant correlations between pre-post changes of the GDS and patients’ PIQ (r = ?0.37, n = 31, p < 0.05), but not on symptomatic changes of the BAI (r = 0.012, n = 32, p > 0.05) or the GWBS (r = 0.12, n = 31, p > 0.05). Relationships between patients’ PIQ and post-ratings on GDS (r = -0.74, n = 33, p < 0.05) and CS-GDS (r = -0.48, n = 32, p < 0.05) are also significant. Results imply that pre-post improvement in depressive symptoms is associated with a patient’s perceived improvement and that clinician and patient ratings on depression symptoms post-treatment were both inversely correlated to patients’ perceived improvement. Findings suggest that the PIQ is a good indicator to assess symptomatic change by patients and clinicians although they are possibly placing attention on different aspects of treatment outcome, as indicated by differences on sub-scales of the PIQ. Clinicians possibly place a strong focus on assessments of depression symptomatology. Future studies may integrate simultaneous assessments of instruments exploring aspects other than depression, especially those examining representations of illness in older adults.  相似文献

Authors investigated a relationship between the frequency of alcohol consumption, spirituality, and coping with everyday life events in a cross-sectional, community-based sample of 320 adults in Ukraine, the country with one of the highest alcohol consumption levels in the world. Face-to-face interviews with participants took place in rural and urban locations across Eastern, Southern, and Central Ukraine. Results of the ordinary least-squares regression suggest that a higher frequency of alcohol consumption was related with the lower use of positive reappraisal (β = ?.27, p < .001), higher use of escape-avoidance (β = .23, p < .01) and confrontive (β = .15, p < .05) coping strategies, lower spirituality (β = ?.20, p < .001), and younger age (β = ?.11, p < .05). On the whole, current findings suggest that specific coping behaviors, younger age, and lower spirituality are involved in higher frequency of alcohol consumption among Ukrainian adults.  相似文献

HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) occur in approximately 50% of HIV-infected individuals, yet available diagnostic criteria yield varying prevalence rates. This study examined the frequency, reliability, and sensitivity to everyday functioning problems of three HAND diagnostic criteria (DSM-5, Frascati, Gisslén). Participants included 361 adults with HIV disease and 199 seronegative adults. Neurocognitive status as defined by each of the three diagnostic systems was determined via a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. Everyday functioning was evaluated through self-report and clinician ratings. Results of logistic regressions revealed an association of HIV serostatus with Frascati-defined neurocognitive impairment (p = .027, OR = 1.7[1.1, 2.7]), but not DSM-5 or Gisslén-defined criteria (ps > .05). Frascati and DSM-5 criteria demonstrated agreement on 71% of observations, Frascati and Gisslén showed agreement on 80%, and DSM-5 and Gisslén criteria showed agreement on 46%, though reliability across the three criteria was poor. Only Frascati-defined neurocognitive impairment significantly predicted everyday functioning problems (p = .002, OR = 2.3[1.4, 3.8]). However, when both neurocognitive and complaint criteria were considered, the DSM-5 guidelines demonstrated significant relationships to everyday functioning, serostatus, and also increased reliability overtime compared to neurocognitive criteria alone (all ps < .05). A subset (n = 118) of the HIV+ group was assessed again after 14.0 (2.2) months. DSM-5 criteria evidenced significantly higher rates of incident neurocognitive disorder compared to both Frascati (p = .003) and Gisslén (p = .021) guidelines, while there were fewer remitting neurocognitive disorder diagnoses when Gisslén criteria were applied to the study sample compared to Frascati (p = .04). Future studies should aim to identify gold standard biological markers (e.g., neuropathology) and clinical outcomes associated with specific diagnostic criteria.  相似文献

This study investigated if training and practice-based coaching in an evidence-based program was associated with higher observed treatment integrity (adherence and competence) and if these treatment integrity components were associated with teacher report of child behavioral outcomes in the BEST in CLASS efficacy trial. Participants were 462 children (M = 4.32 years, SD = 0.53; 65% male; 17.0% Caucasian, 66.0% African-American, 5.0% Hispanic, and 12.0% other) identified as having problem behavior and their 185 teachers (M = 12.09 years teaching experience; 99% female; 47.0% Caucasian, 48.0% African-American, 1.0% Asian/Pacific Islander, 3.0% Hispanic and 1.0% other). Teachers and focal children were randomly assigned to the intervention (teacher n = 92, children n = 230) or control condition (teacher n = 93, child n = 232). Results of a multilevel mediation analysis indicated that the BEST in CLASS intervention had a positive effect on teacher report of child problem behavior (SSIS-RS) and externalizing problems (C-TRF), as well as having a positive effect on teachers’ adherence and competence of delivery of the intervention. There was an indirect effect through competence of delivery for externalizing problems, but not problem behavior. No indirect effects for adherence were found. Implications of these findings and directions for future research are discussed.  相似文献

Background

Anxiety and depression are common among patients with acute illness and their families. In oncology, psychosocial services addressing these symptoms are increasingly part of regular practice. Less is known about psychiatric distress among patients with acute neurological injury (ANI) and their family caregivers. To highlight this inequity in psychosocial intervention across medical services, we compared anxiety and depressive symptomatology shortly following diagnosis among patients facing incurable cancer or ANI and their family caregivers.

Methods

Recruited from the same hospital, participants were patients within 8 weeks of receiving a diagnosis of incurable cancer (N = 350) and their family caregivers (N = 275; total patient/caregiver dyads = 275) and patients hospitalized in the Neuroscience ICU in the past 2 weeks (N = 81) and their family caregivers (N = 95; total dyads = 75). Participants reported anxiety and depressive symptoms using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Symptomatology was compared across illnesses using independent samples t-tests and multiple regressions controlling for differences in sample demographics.

Results

Patients with ANI (M = 6.90) reported greater anxiety symptoms than those with cancer (M = 5.31, p < .001), while caregivers for patients with ANI (M = 5.45) reported greater depressive symptoms than caregivers for patients with cancer (M = 3.81, p < .001). Results remained when controlling for demographic differences between samples.

Conclusion

This is the first cross-comparison of psychiatric distress in patients and family caregivers affected by two distinct, life-threatening illnesses early in the illness trajectory. Findings support the priority of addressing psychiatric distress among patients with ANI and their family caregivers, as has been emphasized in the psychosocial oncology field.

We evaluated swallowing function in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) with or without dysphagia symptoms using different evaluation parameters and compared the results with those of healthy subjects. A total of 36 patients with MG and 25 healthy volunteers were included in the study. The subjects were classified into three groups; patients without dysphagia (group 1), patients with dysphagia (group 2), and healthy participants (group 3). The presence and severity of dysphagia, the oropharyngeal, pharyngeal, pharyngoesophageal, and esophageal phases were assessed using a screening test, manometric test, electrophysiologic studies [electroneuromyography (EMG)], fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES), and barium swallow pharyngeal esophagography (BSPE), respectively. There was a significant difference between group 1 and group 3 in terms of BSPE (p = 0.001) and manometry tests (p = 0.001). A significant difference was found in all methods between group 2 and group 3 (p = 0.001, for all). In the comparison of the patient groups, although the number of patients with dysphagia in group 2 was significantly higher in the clinical tests (p = 0.007), FEES (p = 0.001), and EMG (p = 0.043) than in group 1, no difference was detected for BSPE (p = 0.119) and manometry (p = 0.644). Swallowing functions in patients with MG may be affected even without symptoms. This condition should be considered in their follow-up.  相似文献

To assess the prevalence of depression and its associated factors among patients with stroke in Bangladesh. We conducted a cross-sectional study among 164 post-stroke patients attending two hospitals in Dhaka city between January and June 2011. Depression was measured using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. Factors associated with depression were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression. Results: The prevalence of depression was 70 and 32 % had severe depression. The mean ± sd age of the participants was 58.91 ± 7.03 years. Multivariate regression analysis revealed that factors significantly associated with depression were living in a joint family (OR = 13.5, 95 % CI = 1.3–145.7, p = 0.032), those unable to perform daily activities by themselves (OR = 14.9, 95 % CI = 2.0–108.1, p = 0.008) and those with comorbid dysphasia (OR = 9.5, 95 % CI = 1.0–86.9, p = 0.046) and hypertension (OR = 5.2, 95 % CI = 2.3–15.4, p = 0.012). Depression is a significant health problem among post-stroke patients in Bangladesh. This leads to careful management of depression for social support to achieve better patient outcome.  相似文献

Background

The correlation between noninvasive (oscillometric) blood pressure (NBP) and intra-arterial blood pressure (IAP) in critically ill patients receiving vasoactive medications in a Neurocritical Care Unit has not been systematically studied. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between simultaneously measured NBP and IAP recordings in these patients.

Methods

Prospective observational study of patients (N = 70) admitted to a neurocritical care unit receiving continuous vasopressor or antihypertensive infusions. Paired NBP/IAP observations along with covariate and demographic data were abstracted via chart audit. Analysis was performed using SAS v9.4.

Results

A total of 2177 paired NBP/IAP observations from 70 subjects (49% male, 63% white, mean age 59 years) receiving vasopressors (n = 21) or antihypertensive agents (n = 49) were collected. Paired t test analysis showed significant differences between NBP versus IAP readings: ([systolic blood pressure (SBP): mean = 136 vs. 140 mmHg; p < 0.0001], [diastolic blood pressure (DBP): mean = 70 vs. 68 mmHg, p < 0.0001], [mean arterial blood pressure (MAP): mean = 86 vs. 90 mmHg, p < 0.0001]). Bland–Altman plots for MAP, SBP, and DBP demonstrate good inter-method agreement between paired measures (excluding outliers) and demonstrate NBP–IAP SBP differences at extremes of blood pressures. Pearson correlation coefficients show strong positive correlations for paired MAP (r = 0.82), SBP (r = 0.84), and DBP (r = 0.73) recordings. An absolute NBP–IAP SBP difference of > 20 mmHg was seen in ~ 20% of observations of nicardipine, ~ 25% of observations of norepinephrine, and ~ 35% of observations of phenylephrine. For MAP, the corresponding numbers were ~ 10, 15, and 25% for nicardipine, norepinephrine, and phenylephrine, respectively.

Conclusion

Despite overall strong positive correlations between paired NBP and IAP readings of MAP and SBP, clinically relevant differences in blood pressure are frequent. When treating with vasoactive infusions targeted to a specific BP goal, it is important to keep in mind that NBP and IAP values are not interchangeable.

The involvement of apolipoproteins, such as the ApoE4 isoform, in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) highlights the fact that certain lipid carriers may participate in soluble β-amyloid (Aβ) transport. Our general aim was to characterize the soluble levels of the apolipoproteins apoE, apoA1 and apoJ/clusterin and their genotype status in patients with CAA. We analyzed the genotypes frequency of APOA1 (rs5069, rs670), CLU (rs11136000, rs1532278, rs7012010, rs9331888) and APOE (rs429358, rs7412) in a cohort of patients with CAA-associated intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) (n = 59) and compared the results with those from hypertension-associated ICH (n = 42), AD patients (n = 73) and controls (n = 88). In a subgroup of patients, we also determined the plasma concentrations of apoE, apoA1 and apoJ/clusterin. We found increased plasma apoJ/clusterin levels in CAA patients compared to AD patients or controls after adjusting for sex and age (CAA vs. controls, p = 0.033; CAA vs. AD, p = 0.013). ApoA1 levels were not altered between groups, although a strong correlation was observed between plasma Aβ(1-40) and apoA1 among CAA patients (r = 0.583, p = 0.007). Regarding plasma apoE concentration, a robust association between circulating levels and genotype status was confirmed (p < 0.001). Whereas the APOE4 frequency was higher in AD (p < 0.001) and CAA (p = 0.013), the APOA1 and CLU genotypes were not different among groups. In the CAA cohort, the risk-linked CLU variant (C) rs11136000 was associated with white matter hyperintensities (p = 0.045) and the presence of lobar microbleeds (p = 0.023) on MRI. In summary, our findings suggest that apoA1 may act as a physiological transporter of Aβ(1-40) and that apoJ/clusterin appears to be a chaperone related to distinctive lesions in CAA brains.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), ganglion cell layer (GCL) thickness, macular changes (central subfield thickness (CST), cube average thickness (CAT), cube volume (CV) in patients with migraine using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) and to assess if there was any correlation with white matter lesions (WML). In this prospective case–control study, RNFL, GCL thickness and macular changes of 19 migraine patients with aura (MA), 41 migraine without aura (MO) and 60 age- and gender-matched healthy subjects were measured using OCT device. OCT measurements were taken at the same time of the day to minimize the effects of diurnal variation. The average, inferior and superior quadrant RNFL thickness were significantly thinner in patients with migraine (p = 0.017, p = 0.010, p = 0.048). There was also a significant difference between patients with and without aura in the mean and superior quadrant RNFL thickness (p = 0.02, p = 0.043).While there was a significant thinning in CST and CAT in patients with migraine (p = 0.020), there were no significant difference in GCL measurements (p = 0.184). When the groups were compared to the control group, there were significant differences between MA and the control group regarding average, superior and inferior quadrant RNLF thickness (p < 0.001, p = 0.025, p < 0.001). On the other hand, there were significant differences between MO and the control group regarding average and inferior faces (p = 0.037, p = 0.04). When OCT measurements were evaluated according to the frequency of attacks, CST and GCL thickness were significantly thinner in patients who had more than four attacks a month (p = 0.024, p = 0.014). In patients with WML, only CV measurements were significantly thinner than migraine patients without WML (p = 0.014). The decreased RNFL, CST, CAT and CV of the migraine patients might be related to the vascular pathology of the disease. Because WML was not correlated with the same measurements except CV, we think that further studies are needed to evaluate the etiopathologic relationship between OCT measurements and WML in migraine patients.  相似文献

The objective of this study is to assess patients’ satisfaction with migraine treatment with frovatriptan (F) or zolmitriptan (Z), by preference questionnaire. 133 subjects with a history of migraine with or without aura (IHS criteria) were randomized to F 2.5 mg or Z 2.5 mg. The study had a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, cross-over design, with each of the two treatment periods lasting no more than 3 months. At the end of the study, patients were asked to assign preference to one of the treatments (primary endpoint). The number of pain-free (PF) and pain-relief (PR) episodes at 2 h, and number of recurrent and sustained pain-free (SPF) episodes within 48 h were the secondary study endpoints. Seventy-seven percent of patients expressed a preference. Average score of preference was 2.9 ± 1.3 (F) versus 3.0 ± 1.3 (Z; p = NS). Rate of PF episodes at 2 h was 26% with F and 31% with Z (p = NS). PR episodes at 2 h were 57% for F and 58% for Z (p = NS). Rate of recurrence was 21 (F) and 24% (Z; p = NS). Time to recurrence within 48 h was better for F especially between 4 and 16 h (p < 0.05). SPF episodes were 18 (F) versus 22% (Z; p = NS). Drug-related adverse events were significantly (p < 0.05) less under F (3 vs. 10). In conclusion, our study suggests that F has a similar efficacy of Z, with some advantage as regards tolerability and recurrence.  相似文献

Sleep-wake patterns are rarely examined in adolescents with borderline personality disorder (BPD) or bipolar disorder (BD). Within a developmental perspective, this study explores the sleep-wake cycle of adolescents aged 12–17 years with BPD or BD and healthy controls (HC) during periods with and without entrainment by school/work schedules. Eighteen euthymic BPD, six euthymic BD, and 20 HC adolescents wore wrist actigraphy during nine consecutive days to assess sleep-wake patterns. During school/work days, BPD adolescents spent more time awake when they were in bed compared to HC and BD adolescents (p = 0.039). On schedule-free days, BPD and BD youths spent more time in bed compared to HC adolescents (p = 0.015). BPD adolescents woke up over 1 h later compared to HC (p = 0.003). Total sleep time was more variable between nights in BPD adolescents compared to the HC group (p = 0.031). Future research should explore if sleep-wake pattern disruptions are a cause or a consequence of BPD symptomatology in adolescents. Addressing sleep-wake pattern during clinical assessment and treatment of BPD adolescents may potentially reduce their symptoms; this therapeutic effect still needs to be evaluated.  相似文献

To determine the clinical and demographic correlates of persistent, remitting, and new-onset impulse control behaviors (ICBs) before and after subthalamic deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) in Parkinson’s disease (PD). We compared the pre- and post-surgical prevalence of ICBs, classified as impulse control disorders (ICD), dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS), and punding in 150 consecutive PD STN-DBS-treated patients and determined the association with motor, cognitive, neuropsychological, and neuropsychiatric endpoints. At baseline (before STN-DBS), ICBs were associated with younger age (p = 0.045) and male gender (85 %; p = 0.001). Over an average follow-up of 4.3 ± 2.1 years of chronic STN-DBS there was an overall trend for reduction in ICBs (from 17.3 to 12.7 %; p = 0.095) with significant improvement in hypersexuality (12–8.0 %; p = 0.047), gambling (10.7–5.3 %; p = 0.033), and DDS (4.7–0 %; p < 0.001). ICB remitted in 18/26 patients (69 %) and persisted in 8/26 (31 %); the latter group was characterized by higher levodopa equivalent daily dose. Patients who developed a new-onset ICB during follow-up (n = 11/150) were characterized by younger age (p = 0.042), lower dyskinesia improvement (p ≤ 0.035), and a gender distribution with higher prevalence of women (p = 0.018). In addition, new-onset ICB was more common among patients with borderline, schizoid, and/or schizotypal traits of personality disorders; persistent ICB in those with obsessive–compulsive traits. PD-related ICBs exhibit a complex outcome after STN-DBS, with a tendency for overall reduction but with age, gender, dopaminergic therapy, and neuropsychiatric features exerting independent effects.  相似文献

Cognitive development in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex is highly variable. Predictors in the infant years would be valuable to counsel parents and to support development. The aim of this study was to confirm factors that have been reported to be independently correlated with cognitive development. 102 patients included in this study were treated at the ENCORE-TSC expertise center of the Erasmus Medical Center-Sophia Children’s Hospital. Data from the first 24 months of life were used, including details on epilepsy, motor development and mutation status. Outcome was defined as cognitive development (intellectual equivalent, IE) as measured using tests appropriate to the patients age and cognitive abilities (median age at testing 8.2 years, IQR 4.7–12.0). Univariable and multivariable regression analyses were used. In a univariable analysis, predictors of lower IE were: the presence of infantile spasms (β = ?18.3, p = 0.000), a larger number of antiepileptic drugs used (β = ?6.3, p = 0.000), vigabatrin not used as first drug (β = ?14.6, p = 0.020), corticosteroid treatment (β = ?33.2, p = 0.005), and a later age at which the child could walk independently (β = ?2.1, p = 0.000). An older age at seizure onset predicted higher IE (β = 1.7, p = 0.000). In a multivariable analysis, only age at seizure onset was significantly correlated to IE (β = 1.2, p = 0.005), contributing to 28% of the variation in IE. In our cohort, age at seizure onset was the only variable that independently predicted IE. Factors predicting cognitive development could aid parents and physicians in finding the appropriate support and schooling for these patients.  相似文献

Background

Social networks can influence physical activity, but little is known about how best to engineer online and in-person social networks to increase activity.

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to conduct a randomized trial based on the Social Networks for Activity Promotion model to assess the incremental contributions of different procedures for building social networks on objectively measured outcomes.

Methods

Physically inactive adults (n = 308, age, 50.3 (SD = 8.3) years, 38.3 % male, 83.4 % overweight/obese) were randomized to one of three groups. The Promotion group evaluated the effects of weekly emailed tips emphasizing social network interactions for walking (e.g., encouragement, informational support); the Activity group evaluated the incremental effect of adding an evidence-based online fitness walking intervention to the weekly tips; and the Social Networks group evaluated the additional incremental effect of providing access to an online networking site for walking as well as prompting walking/activity across diverse settings. The primary outcome was mean change in accelerometer-measured moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), assessed at 3 and 9 months from baseline.

Results

Participants increased their MVPA by 21.0 min/week, 95 % CI [5.9, 36.1], p = .005, at 3 months, and this change was sustained at 9 months, with no between-group differences.

Conclusions

Although the structure of procedures for targeting social networks varied across intervention groups, the functional effect of these procedures on physical activity was similar. Future research should evaluate if more powerful reinforcers improve the effects of social network interventions.

Trial Registration Number

The trial was registered with the ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT01142804).
