Part-time clinical nursing instructors can be an important asset to student learning when qualified. However, they are often expected to begin teaching without an orientation, knowledge of teaching skills, and experience. Additional hurdles for novice faculty include unfamiliarity with the academic culture, college and nursing program policies, procedures, and syllabi. Orientation to the clinical faculty role and having a mentor has been shown to bridge the knowledge gap for the novice part-time clinical nursing faculty.  相似文献

As a relatively new doctoral discipline, nursing appears to be following the research focus of other disciplines in its doctoral programs. One original intent of awarding doctoral degrees in nursing was to prepare faculty. This study sought to determine how many doctoral students in nursing identified the goal of a career as faculty in schools of nursing at the beginning of their doctoral program, and how many would choose faculty positions after being enrolled in a doctoral program for more than one year. The population included 785 doctoral students in nursing from 35 schools in the United States. A cross-sectional study design was used to compare newly enrolled doctoral students with students who had been enrolled for more than one year. Although first-year and more experienced students have similar career goals upon entering a doctoral program, the career goals of doctoral nursing students do change over time. More experienced students become less interested in faculty positions, especially in nondoctoral schools of nursing, and more interested in positions involving research and consultation. Within specific programs, students in EdD programs became more interested in faculty positions in doctoral universities. Students in DNS programs who changed their goals became more career goal oriented, thus compounding the shortage of doctoral faculty. These changes in career goals warrant examination.  相似文献

Perioperative nursing is in crisis because of the difficulty recruiting sufficient numbers of graduate nurses and the threat of nonnursing employees performing traditional nursing duties. The relative unpopularity of perioperative nursing as a career choice for graduate nurses is commonly attributed to little exposure to the specialty's theory and practice in undergraduate nursing education programs. This article discusses results of a longitudinal study's first phase to ascertain career preferences of undergraduate nursing students. Findings suggest that when students begin nursing programs, they consider perioperative nursing a favorable career option. Few studies regarding student nurses' attitudes toward perioperative nursing exist, making these results significant.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to describe deans' perspectives on the life and career relationships and experiences that were significant to them and that influenced them in the assumption of the dean's position. A developmental model guided this inquiry and was used to explain the development of these women's personal and professional identities. The study design was naturalistic. Data was collected by survey, life history interviews, and through document search of curriculum vitae. Field notes were recorded throughout the data collection period. Data were analyzed using Spradley's ethnographic analysis techniques consisting of domains, taxonomies, components, and themes. The study yielded the following themes: (1) a pattern of strong valuing by the participants of education and achievement; (2) a pattern of female relationships that provided the deans with role modeling of important leadership behaviors, support, encouragement, and information for making educational and career choices; (3) a pattern of early leadership behavior that included an enjoyment of, or a desire to be in charge. The conclusions of the study were: (1) the Erikson, Levinson Morgan, and Farber models were useful frameworks in studying these deans' life and career pathways; (2) people and relationships played an important role in the lives and the careers of the women studied; (3) the deans' early socialization experiences and relationships contributed to the development of leadership behaviors and positive ego development; (4) Through early family and educational experiences and relationships, the participants in this study developed strong values related to the importance of achievement and education.  相似文献

Nurses currently construct careers in a climate of continuing occupational and organizational change. A longitudinal project is in progress which is documenting the post-qualification histories of a cohort of registered general nurses, and studying the extent to which their careers represent occupational choice, a response to organizational constraints, or a combination of both. Three elements comprise the core of the research: questions which provide information on the cohort's career plans, charts which document their career histories and questions which explore the relationship between the two. The basis of the design is the first element, and this paper focuses on the problems encountered in designing the questions and routeing structures which enabled all cohort members to describe their plans for the future.
The importance of extensive pilot work is demonstrated in the development of options tailored for each potential career pathway and to allow expressions of uncertainty to emerge at points when appropriate to respondents. Of the 1164 members of the cohort, 1015 returned the questionnaire; a response rate of 87%. Findings are presented on the cohort's plans at qualification. The majority of respondents (86%) saw themselves as remaining in nursing and in clinical practice in the early post-qualification period. Eighteen per cent said they intended to practise abroad at some point, 30% foresaw a likelihood of working in the private sector, 59% wanted to take one or more English National Board courses and 42% expressed interest in obtaining an undergraduate or postgraduate degree.  相似文献

Background  

Nurses in Australia are often not educated in their pre registration years to meet the needs of primary care. Careers in primary care may not be as attractive to nursing graduates as high-tech settings such as intensive or acute care. Yet, it is in primary care that increasingly complex health problems are managed. The Australian government has invested in incentives for general practices to employ practice nurses. However, no policy framework has been developed for practice nursing to support career development and post-registration education and training programs are developed in an ad hoc manner and are not underpinned by core professional competencies. This paper reports on a systematic review undertaken to establish the available evidence on education models and career pathways with a view to enhancing recruitment and retention of practice nurses in primary care in Australia.  相似文献

A sample of 100 high school counselors in a southeastern state was surveyed to explore their perceptions of baccalaureate degree nursing as a career choice and the type and availability of resources used in counseling students toward careers in nursing. With a response rate of 31 percent, the findings indicate that counselors need more up-to-date, specific information about the requirements and scope of professional nursing practice.  相似文献
