Technical notes are known to be a popular method of publishing novel surgical techniques, up-to-date technological advances, and tricks of the trade in oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS). The British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (BJOMS) has a dedicated section for such papers, and this article explores the publication of technical notes over the last two years. In addition, comparison is made with previous reviews of technical notes in this journal a decade ago, to explore the progression of diversity and evolving topics of interest to the oral and maxillofacial surgery community.  相似文献

Evidence-based medicine relies on the integration of high-quality research with clinical expertise and patient values. The hierarchy of evidence allows the clinician to assign value to research based on the methodological quality of the study design and its applicability to the clinical question. Improvements in the quality of research in oral and maxillofacial surgery aim to strengthen evidence-based medicine and patient care. Analysis of the trends in maxillofacial surgery publications can identify the strengths and weaknesses of the current body of research, and direct researchers to areas that require improvement. The aim of this study was to review the proportion of the types of articles published in the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (BJOMS) and the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (IJOMS) between January 2010 and December 2019. These data were compared with a previously published review that summarised the proportion published in 2000 - 2009. The topics chosen for meta-analysis and the number of qualitative studies were also summarised. In total, 4931 articles were reviewed over the 10-year period. Compared with the previous 10 years, there was an increase in randomised controlled trials and meta-analyses, and a reduction in case series and case reports. Implantology and dentoalveolar surgery were the most common topics chosen for meta-analysis. Overall, the trend in the maxillofacial literature is towards a higher quality body of research.  相似文献

The management of salivary gland disease forms a considerable part of the work done by oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Fast track and one-stop head and neck lump clinics allow for early diagnosis of salivary gland tumours in most units, the emphasis being on outcome after operation for benign disease. There have been limited advances in salivary gland surgery in recent years. Most recent publications have compared outcome of new methods of treatment with conventional techniques. This article reviews papers related to diseases of the salivary glands published in the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (BJOMS) over a two-year period (2007–2008), and includes other relevant articles to bring readers up to date about salivary gland disease.  相似文献

In 2006, it was 50 years ago that the oral and maxillofacial surgery was officially recognized as a dental speciality in The Netherlands. During those five decades, oral and maxillofacial surgery significantly evolved, which is nicely reflected by the changes in the name of the scientific society supporting the speciality. Originally its name was The Netherlands Society for Oral Surgery and Surgical Prosthodontics, but in 1975 its name was changed into The Netherlands Society for Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery, and in 2006 into The Netherlands Society for Oral Medicine and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Esser is considered to be the first oral and maxillofacial surgeon in The Netherlands. In The Netherlands, 2 schools of oral and maxillofacial surgery are recognized: the Utrecht School with Tjebbes as its founder and the Groningen School with Hut as its founder. Because of the 50th anniversary of the speciality, a thematic issue of the Dutch Journal of Dentistry offers a review of the current status of and expected future developments in oral medicine, head and neck oncology, maxillofacial traumatology, growth and development disorders of the maxillofacial skeleton, temporomandibular joint disorders and reconstructive surgery in The Netherlands.  相似文献

Waldemar Wilhelm (1913-1994) was honored by the Asociación Colombiana de Cirugía Oral y Maxilofacial (Colombian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) as the Father of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Colombia. Born in Karlsruhe, Germany, Wilhelm graduated as a dentist from Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in 1936. He emigrated shortly thereafter to Colombia, receiving his dental license there in 1943. He completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery training at Nordwestdeutsche Kieferklinic, under the tutelage of Prof. Dr. Dr. Karl Schuchardt in Hamburg. In 1950, he settled in Bogotá, where he joined the Universidad Nacional School of Dentistry, opened Colombia's first oral and maxillofacial surgery department at Hospital San José, and trained the first maxillofacial surgeons in Colombia in 1958.  相似文献

Publication in peer-reviewed journals is often seen as a cornerstone of the academic and clinical career within medicine and surgery. As one of the largest circulations in oral and maxillofacial surgery, the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (BJOMS) offers trainees and consultants the opportunity to disseminate valuable information worldwide. The aim of this paper is to investigate the variation in publication rates of U.K. authors based upon their Deanery in order to identify potential hotspots. All volumes of BJOMS between 2011 and 2019 were hand searched to identify full articles authored by authors in U.K., these were categorised by Deanery and allocated a theme within OMFS. The results demonstrate that, of the 378 full length articles, over 30% of these were from two Deaneries: London and North West (West). Oncology, OMFS training and education, and craniofacial trauma were the three most common themes of publication amounting to 51.5% of total publications. There has been an unfortunate decrease in publications from U.K. Deaneries of almost 30% from 2011 to 2019 which begs the question of whether fewer publications are being accepted or if rates of submission have reduced.  相似文献

We searched the Medline database of 4 leading international journals of oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) for all articles containing the terms “undergraduate”, “medical student”, or “dental student” in the abstract, title, or keywords, from the earliest paper to 2013, to identify and review publications that related to the education of undergraduate medical and dental students. We found 130 articles, of which 22 (17%) met the inclusion criteria. Most were published by teams based in the United States, followed by those from the United Kingdom and Germany. The earliest was published in 1986. Since then, most have been published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (0.33/year) and the least in the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (0.11/year). Eleven original research articles concerned dental students and 4 concerned medical students. Three studies looked at both groups and compared them with their qualified counterparts. There is a relative paucity of articles relating to the education of undergraduates, particularly medical students, in OMFS journals, although the number has increased over the last decade. There is a need for more educational papers to be aimed at students interested in pursuing OMFS as a career.  相似文献

The aim was to evaluate the management strategies of Dutch oral and maxillofacial surgeons when performing invasive dental or oral surgery in patients using oral antithrombotic medication (OAM). In November 2009 a survey was mailed to all 213 members of the Dutch Society for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. A response rate of 57% was achieved with 79 surveys returned through mail and 38 surveys answered through the Internet. The results show that many different treatment strategies are advocated by Dutch oral and maxillofacial surgeons, regarding preferred international normalised ratio (INR) value and continuation or discontinuation of OAM prior to invasive dental or oral surgery. The risk of bleeding during or after an invasive dental procedure was overestimated. A need for a practice guideline on this topic was expressed by 73% of respondents.  相似文献

This retrospective observational study investigated the frequency of reporting ethical approval and informed consent in recently published oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) research involving human subjects. All research involving human subjects published in the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Journal of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery during January to June 2005–2007 were analysed for disclosure of ethical approval by a local ethical committee and obtaining informed consent from the subjects. 534 articles were identified; ethical approval was documented in 118 (22%) and individual patient consent in 135 (25%). 355 reports (67%) did not include a statement on ethical approval or informed consent and only 74 reports (14%) disclosed statements of both. Ethical documentation in retrospective and observational studies was scant; 12% of randomised controlled trials and 38% of non-random trials did not report both of ethical protections. Most recent OMS publications involving humans failed to mention ethical review or subjects’ consent. Authors must adhere to the international research ethics guidelines and journal instructions, while editors should play a gatekeeper role to protect research participants, uphold scientific integrity and maintain public trust in the experimental process and OMS profession.  相似文献

Full length articles such as prospective and retrospective studies, case series, laboratory-based research and reviews form the majority of papers published in the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (BJOMS). We were interested to evaluate the breakdown of these types of articles both by sub-specialty and the type of study as well as the proportion that are written by UK colleagues compared to overseas authors over a 2 year period (2010–11).  相似文献
