This article brings an overview of the influence of molecular medicine on pathophysiology, medical practice, and medical education. Various aspects of the growing impact of molecular medicine on clinical practice are discussed: diagnostic and predictive testing, gene and targeted therapy, and pharmacogenomics. Insufficient data from appropriate clinical studies and evidence-based medicine presently limit the applications of molecular medicine in clinical practice. Incorporation of conceptual and clinical aspects of molecular medicine in undergraduate and postgraduate curricula and a continuing education of medical professionals is an urgent imperative for the demands of medical care quality to be met in near future. The emphasis should be put on bedside-orientated molecular medicine. The prerequisite is translational research aimed to translate basic information into the improvement of healthcare of individual patients and the population as a whole.  相似文献

Health-care priorities are changing throughout the United States, and the quality of American medicine is dependent on the quality of medical education. While a surplus of doctors is anticipated, a shortage of minority doctors remains. Published data sources provide information on enrollment, distribution, and specialties of black Americans in medical education programs. These data provide understanding of the process that has created the shortage of blacks in medicine. The tabular data suggest that the proportion of blacks in medical education programs has remained very low over time, and in some cases, it has actually declined. Funding needs, recruitment efforts, and educational information are essential considerations in changing the racial make-up of medical education and health care.  相似文献

Patient education is widely regarded as an essential component of chronic disease care and effective health promotion. Internet is extremely useful medium in this respect. Web-based information is seldom the subject of systematic investigation for its accuracy and appropriateness for patients. Objective of this study was to evaluate of web-based diabetes patient education material for well-accepted evaluation criteria and core education concepts. Out of 214 web-sites retrieved from meta search engine, 53 sites themselves provide patient information and so considered for evaluation. Data obtained was analyzed by cluster analysis and classified into four categories with respect to quality. Considerable variability in quality of diabetes patient education web-sites was found with respect to core educational concepts and HSWG criteria. Inclusion of evidence-based medicine concepts, role of family support, enhancement in customized content and easier feedback mechanism in the web-sites can be a significant development in the direction of patient-centered diabetes care.  相似文献

Redefinition of roles and functions in the healthcare systems of the future requires embracing to the value of continuing education. Within this framework healthcare professional education and continuing education, there are several core competencies described by Institute of Medicine (IOM) [A.C. Greiner, E. Knebel (Eds.), Health Professionals Education: Bridge to Quality, IOM, available at, May 2003] that form the foundation for practice for nurses and other healthcare professionals. An overarching sentence in the document says "All health professionals should be educated to deliver patient-centered care as members of an interdisciplinary team, emphasizing evidence-based practice, quality improvement approaches, and informatics" (p. 45). These IOM core competencies are: (1) Common value for respecting patients' differences, values, preferences and expressed needs. (2) Ability to cooperate, collaborate, communicate and integrate care using interdisciplinary teams. (3) Knowledge of and willingness to employ evidence-based practice principles. (4) Capability to apply quality and safety improvement approaches in care. (5) Understand, value and use informatics to all areas of health care, to reduce errors, manage knowledge and information, and make decisions and communicate. In enveloping these core competencies in basic and continuing education, it is necessary to build an evidence base for education itself, demand that faculty are prepared for the future. A crucial need is for healthcare professional students (including nursing students) learn interdisciplinary collaboration in the education of patients. A global strategy, using these competencies for preparing faculty is necessary; and some models already exist that can be further developed to meet future needs that are informatics driven in our increasingly technological future care systems.  相似文献

Tanzania is one of the countries most severely affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. A number of local AIDS education efforts have been launched over the past decade, several of which have yielded measurable, positive outcomes. Despite these successes, many barriers to effective dissemination of AIDS information exist, and large population groups still lack basic information on how to protect themselves from infection. Although effective school-based AIDS education programs are available, these have yet to be implemented consistently and persistently throughout the public school system, where the majority of adolescents can be reached.  相似文献
