The tuber of Icacina trichantha was extracted with 50% methanol and concentrated to dryness in vacuo to give a yield of 5.6% w/w. The extract induced sleep in rats treated with high doses (400–1000 mg/kg i.p.). The LD50 of the extract was 671 mg/kg i.p. It potentiated pentobarbitone sleeping time in rats dose-dependently and also induced significant local anaesthetic effects in guinea-pigs. The extract was able to give 80% protection to rats poisoned with pentylenetetrazole but failed to protect rats from strychinine poisoning. It induced significant dose-dependent analgesia in rats and showed significant muscle relaxant activity in mice.  相似文献

Plants are a potential source of bioactive compounds and offer a promising strategy for the treatment of neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. The inhibitory effect of 73 native and naturalized plants collected from the central region of Argentina on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was tested using microplate and TLC assays after solvent fractionation of complete ethanol extracts obtained from the plants. Organic fractions obtained from extracts of Achyrocline tomentosa (Asteraceae), Eupatorium viscidum (Asteraceae), Ruprechtia apetala (Polygonaceae) Trichocline reptans (Asteraceae) and Zanthoxylum coco (Rutaceae) presented strong inhibition of AChE (higher than 80%) at 1 mg/mL, with R. apetala and T. reptans being the most potent, showing complete inhibition of the enzyme. Their IC50 values were 0.0779 and 0.1118 mg/mL, respectively. Aqueous fractions did not show any inhibitory activity on the enzyme. These results suggest that the most effective extracts deserve further investigation with the aim of obtaining new molecules for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. As part of our screening of anti-AIDS agents from natural sources, extracts of 15 medicinal plants widely used in the folk medicines of North America and Europe were evaluated in vitro. Most of the extracts tested were relatively nontoxic to human lymphocytic MT-2 cells, but only the extracts of Hysopp officinalis and Dittrichia viscosa exhibited anti-HIV activity in an in vitro MTT assay. The 50% hydroalcohol extract of Hysopp officinalis and the aqueous extract of Dittrichia viscosa showed inhibitory effects against HIV-1 induced infections in MT-2 cells at concentrations ranging from 50 to 100 microg/mL and 25 to 400 microg/mL, respectively. Both extracts showed no appreciable cytotoxicity at these concentrations.  相似文献

We have investigated the effects of methanolic and alcoholic extracts from Amomi Semen on gastric secretion, as well as gastrointestinal propulsion or the prokinetic activities. The methanolic extract from Amomi Semen dose dependently decreased the volume output, acid output, and pepsin output in rat's gastric juice with increasing pH value, while the alcoholic extract had no influence on basal gastric acid secretion. Furthermore, the alcoholic extract improved the L-dopa to induce a delay of gastrointestinal transit in mice, while the methanolic extract did not improve it. However, both extracts had no influence on gastrointestinal transit in intact mice. These results suggest that Amomi Semen has an inhibitory effect on gastric acid secretion and that it has effects as the gastrointestinal prokinetics rather than propulsion. The present study pharmacologically elucidates a belief that Amomi Semen has been used in Chinese medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal dyspepsia, which includes hyperchlorhydria, stomachache, abdominal distention, anorexia, gastric atony, etc.  相似文献

To discover antimalarial substances from plants cultivated in Thailand 80%-EtOH extracts from selected plants were screened for in vitro antimalarial activity against the drug resistant K1 strain of Plasmodium falciparum. In total, 86 Thai medicinal plant samples representing 48 species from 35 genera in 16 families were screened and two species (Polyalthia viridis and Goniothalamus marcanii) were found to show notable antimalarial activity (IC50: 10.0 and 6.3 microg/mL). Marcanine A and 16-hydroxycleroda-3,13(14)Z-dien-15,16-olide were identified as the respective major active constituents in P. viridis and G. marcanii, respectively.  相似文献

Brazilian plant extracts belonging to 16 species of 5 different families (71 extracts) were tested against the stable DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate) free-radical. The ability to scavenge DPPH radical was measured in these experiments by the discoloration of the solution. Ginkgo biloba and rutin, commonly used as antioxidants for medical purposes, were used as standards. Based on our results, we can say that as a general rule the ethanol extracts of plants belonging to the Verbenaceae family showed lower EC(50) values than the other plant extracts. Among the partitions, the more polar ones (ethyl acetate and n-butanol) are those that generally have higher antioxidant activity (AA).  相似文献

Boiled extracts derived from 28 Indonesian medicinal plants were screened for their antibabesial activity against Babesia gibsoni in vitro. Of these extracts, the fruit of Brucea javanica was the most active in inhibiting parasite growth at a concentration of 10 microg/mL. Bioassay-guided fractionation of the fruit extract of Br. javanica led to the isolation of two new quassinoids, bruceantinol B and bruceine J, and the structures of these compounds were elucidated on the basis of their spectroscopic data and by chemical transformation to known compounds. In addition, the known quassinoids bruceines A-D, bruceantinol, and yadanziolide A were isolated. Antibabesial activities were also examined in vitro, and bruceine A and bruceantinol were shown to be more potent than diminazene aceturate, a drug (IC50 = 103 ng/mL) used clinically against B. gibsoni, with IC50 values of 4 and 12 ng/mL, respectively.  相似文献

Dichloromethane and methanol extracts of 13 Zingiberaceae species from the Alpinia, Costus and Zingiber genera were screened for antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. The antimicrobial activity of most of the extracts was antibacterial with only the methanol extract of Costus discolor showing very potent antifungal activity against only Aspergillus ochraceous (MID, 15.6 microg per disc). All the extracts showed strong antioxidant activity comparable with or higher that of alpha-tocopherol.  相似文献

Methanolic and aqueous extracts derived from 43 plant species, selected either from ethnobotanical or chemotaxonomical data, were screened for their antiprotozoal activity against Leishmania donovani and Trypanosoma brucei brucei. The cytotoxic activity against KB cells was also determined. Eight extracts had IC50 values of less than 10 microg/ml against Leishmania donovani. The most active was Triclisia patens with an IC50 value of 1.5 microg/ml against Leishmania donovani. Annona purpurea and Alstonia macrophylla had IC50 values below 10 microg/ml against Trypanosoma brucei brucei. Annona purpurea was the most cytotoxic against KB cells.  相似文献

Preliminary antimicrobial screening against Candida albicans and selected Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria of methanol extracts prepared from eight Mexican medicinal plants, noted for their antiseptic properties, was conducted. The significant activity exhibited for extracts of Ratibida latipalearis, Teloxys graveolens, Dodonaea viscosa, Hyptis albida, H. pectinata, H. Suaveolens and H. verticillata tends to support their traditional use as anti-infective agents. Only the extract of Hintonia latiflora was inactive. The antimicrobial activities of 44 pure natural compounds and two derivatives were determined. Of these, only 23 compounds were effective in inhibiting the growth of the tested organisms (MIC less than or equal to 100 micrograms/ml).  相似文献

The hexane, ethylacetate, n-butanol, and water extracts of 10 Korean herbal medicines were screened and compared for their antioxidant activities in a range of lipid peroxidation system using rat brain homogenates, antihemolysis assay of red blood cells, and other in vitro assays to determine their ability to scavenge superoxide and hydroxyl radicals. All of the 10 Korean herbal medicines have potent antioxidant activities. Among the four solvent extracts, the antioxidant activities of more-polar solvent extracts (BuOH and water extracts) were relatively higher than that of non-polar solvent extracts (hexane and EtOAC extracts). These results will be useful to further analyze those herbal medicines that contain the most antioxidant activity in order to identify the active principles.  相似文献

Of 30 Indonesian plant extracts tested for their human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) inhibitory activities, six were shown to be effective by assays using HIV-1-infected MT-4 cells: a methanol extract of mahoni (bark of Swietenia mahagoni) and water extracts of benalu teh (stems and branches of Loranthus parasiticus), kiules (fruit of Helicteres isora), supratul (fruits of Sindora sumatrana), sambiloto (leaves of Andrographis paniculata) and temu ireng (rhizoma of Curcuma aeruginosa). Their ED50 values ranged from 4.2 to 175 μg/mL. The samples also suppressed the formation of syncytia in co-cultures of MOLT-4 and MOLT-4/HIV-1 cells. The most potent inhibitor was a methanol extract of mahoni, which also showed a significant inhibition of HIV-1 protease.  相似文献

Terminalia sericea Burch. Ex. DC (Combretaceae) extracts are used to treat bacterial infections, diarrhea, and diabetes. Intermediate and polar extracts of the roots exhibited antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus anthracis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, while the petroleum ether extract was inactive. The extracts were mildly active against Bacillus anthracis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa but exhibited the highest activity against Staphylococcus aureus. They also exhibited antifungal activity against Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger. An 80% aqueous ethanol extract of the roots did not have any effect on blood glucose levels during an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), in mice (P>0.05). With the exception of the dichloromethane and petroleum ether extracts, all the intermediate and polar extracts were toxic to brine shrimps giving LC(50) (95% confidence intervals) values ranging from 5.4 (3.5-8.4) to 17.4 (11.4-26.5) microg/ml, while that of cyclophosphamide, a standard anticancer drug, was 16.3 (10.6-25.2) microg/ml. Further work is in progress to isolate and identify active compounds in the extracts.  相似文献

Extracts from the fruits, leaves and flowers of Cucurbita maxima Duschne were subjected to preliminary microbiological and pharmacological studies. The undiluted ethanol extracts of squash fruits exhibited complete inhibition against B. subtilis and only partial inhibition against E. coli. The extracts of squash flowers and leaves showed either minimal or an absence of antimicrobial activity against both organisms. In the pharmacological screening of the crude extracts of squash fruits and leaves, there was a decrease in motor activity, ataxia, temporary palpebral ptosis, hyperaemia, micturition and abdominal gripping in the test mice. The ethyl acetate extract of squash flowers caused a decrease in respiratory rate, analgesia, paralysis of the hindlegs, persistent skin folds, hyperaemia, diarrhoea, and exophthalamos.  相似文献

Skin infections are common diseases in developing countries, of which dermatophytoses are of particular concern in the tropics, especially in infants. Through ethnobotanical surveys and literature review 100 plants were detected as being used in Guatemala for the treatment of dermatophytoses. Of these, 44 plants were screened for in vitro activity against the most common dermatophytes (Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum canis, Microsporum gypseum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Trichophyton rubrum). Results showed that aqueous extracts from 22 of the plants tested inhibit one or more of the dermatophytes. The most commonly inhibited dermatophytes were E. floccosum (43.2%), T. rubrum (36.0%), and T. mentagrophytes (31.8%); the less inhibited were M. canis (22.7%) and M. gypseum (24.0%). Plants of American origin which exhibited anti-dermatophyte activity were: Byrsonima crassifolia, Cassia grandis, Cassia occidentalis, Diphysa carthagenensis, Gliricidia sepium, Piscidia piscipula, Sambucus mexicana, Smilax regelii, Solanum americanum and Solanum nigrescens. Fungicidal and fungistatic activities as well as the minimal inhibitory concentration were demonstrated. These results provide a scientific basis for the use of these plants for the treatment of dermatophyte infections in man.  相似文献

Lipids are important components in human nutrition; however, their increased intake contributes to the development of obesity and can lead to multiple long‐term complications. Pancreatic lipase (triacylglycerol acylhydrolase, EC 3.1.1.3) is a key enzyme for the absorption of dietary triglycerides. Interference with fat hydrolysis results in the reduced utilization of ingested lipids, therefore inhibition of lipases decreases fat absorption. Extracts from 106 species of medicinal plants, vegetables and fruits were screened for potential lipase inhibitory activity. p‐Nitrophenylpalmitate and 5‐bromo‐4‐chloro‐3‐indoxylpalmitate were used as substrates in an in vitro test with crude porcine pancreatic lipase. Bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva‐ursi), garden pea (Pisum sativum), Norway spruce (Picea abies) and large‐leaved lime (Tilia platyphyllos) extracts were the most active. Additionally, the activity of selected extracts with removed polyphenols was measured. Extracts of bearberry, garden pea and large‐leaved lime are a promising source for developing functional foods or isolating active compounds. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In the course of our search for plant natural products as antiviral agents, extracts of ten plants from the Iberian Peninsula were tested for antiviral activity against herpes simplex type I (HSV-1), vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) and poliovirus type 1. Aqueous extracts of five of these medicinal plants, namely Nepeta nepetella (150-500 microg/mL), Nepeta coerulea (150-500 microg/mL), Nepeta tuberosa (150-500 microg/mL), Dittrichia viscosa (50-125 microg/mL) and Sanguisorba minor magnolii (50-125 microg/mL), showed a clear antiviral activity against two different DNA and RNA viruses, i.e. HSV-1 and VSV. Only the medicinal plant Dittrichia viscosa was active against an additional virus, poliovirus type 1.  相似文献
