The primary purpose of this study was to examine pathways from prenatal cigarette exposure to physiological regulation at 2 months of age. Specifically, we explored the possibility that any association between prenatal cigarette exposure and infant physiological regulation was moderated by fetal growth, prenatal or postnatal environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure or maternal depressive symptomatology during pregnancy. We evaluated whether exposed infants who were also exposed to ETS after birth, were small for gestational age (SGA) or had mothers with higher depressive symptoms during pregnancy had the highest levels of physiological dysregulation. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) was obtained from 234 (166 exposed and 68 nonexposed) infants during sleep. As expected, cigarette-exposed infants had significantly lower RSA than nonexposed infants. This association was not moderated by prenatal or postnatal ETS exposure, or maternal depressive symptomatology during pregnancy. However, small for gestational age status did moderate this association such that nonexposed infants who were not small for gestational age had a significantly higher RSA than nonexposed small for gestational age infants and exposed infants. These findings provide additional evidence that prenatal cigarette exposure is directly associated with dysregulation during infancy.  相似文献

One of the major effects of cigarette smoking during pregnancy is bearing a child with lower birth weight. It has previously been demonstrated under experimental conditions in rats that exposure to reference cigarette smoke results in reduced birth weight (E. L. Carmines et al., 2003, Toxicol. Sci. 75, 134-147; C. L. Gaworski et al., 2004, Toxicol. Sci. 79, 157-169). The role of various smoke constituents on lower birth weight was evaluated by exposing time-pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats at the concentrations found in cigarette smoke. The rats were exposed for 2 h/day 7 days/week by nose-only inhalation. The target concentrations were designed to produce the same plasma levels of biomarkers as exposure to 2R4F reference cigarette smoke at a concentration of 600 mg/m(3) total particulate matter. The smoke constituents evaluated included carbon monoxide (CO), nicotine, and a mixture of aldehydes (acrolein, acetaldehyde, and formaldehyde). The smoke constituents were tested individually as well as in mixtures to evaluate potential interactions. Exposure to cigarette smoke during gestation produced a reduction in both maternal body weight gain and fetal weights. Exposure to nicotine reduced maternal body weight gain but had no effect on fetal weight. Exposure to CO had no effect on maternal body weight gain but reduced fetal weight to a degree comparable to cigarette smoke. Exposure to a mixture of aldehydes (acrolein, acetaldehyde, and formaldehyde) had no effect on either maternal body weight gain or fetal weight. Exposure to mixtures of nicotine and CO or nicotine, CO, and aldehydes did not demonstrate any interactions. The results of this study suggest that the observed reduction in fetal weight after exposure to cigarette smoke in rats is due to CO toxicity and not nicotine toxicity.  相似文献

We prospectively ascertained gestational cocaine use by neonatal urine and hair tests in 600 mother infant pairs in 3 nurseries in Toronto. The 37 (6.25%) babies who tested positive for cocaine and their mothers were compared to the 563 nonexposed with regard to pregnancy outcome and neonatal complications. Mothers using cocaine were not different in their ages, racial distribution, and obstetric history from those nonexposed. Cocaine-using women had significantly higher risk for vaginal bleeding (16% vs 6%, P < 0.05), hepatitis B carrier state (8% vs 0.8%, P < 0.005), and perhaps more urinary tract infections (8% vs 2.5%, P = 0.08). cocaine-using mothers were significantly more likely to smoke cigarettes (29% vs 10%, P < 0.001). Infants exposed to cocaine in utero were of lower birth weight (3162 ± 645 [SD] g vs 3391 ± 573, P < 0.05) and birth length (49.9 ± 2.9 cm vs 51.1 ± 3.1 cm, P < 0.05). Further stratification of babies exposed to cocaine by maternal cigarette smoking suggests that cigarette smoking accounted for most of this variability [birth weight of babies exposed to cocaine and cigarettes 2899 ± 7.50 g (and 50% of them weighed less than 2500 g), vs 3423 ± 612 (and only 8% less than 2500 g) in those exposed to cocaine only (P < 0.05). Babies exposed to cocaine in utero were significantly more likely to need initial medical support or resuscitation (52% vs 30%, P < 0.05). We conclude that gestational exposure to cocaine, ascertained by a sensitive biologic marker, is associated with substantial perinatal risks. It is probable that some of these risks are caused by clustering of other risk factors such as maternal smoking and hepatitis carrier state. Because routine clinical markers and urine testing often fail to distinguish fetal exposure to cocaine, more common use of the hair test should be considered, especially for babies with complicated perinatal courses.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: This experimental study investigated the protective effects of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on peroxidative changes in fetal lungs in the offspring of rats exposed to cigarette smoke. METHODS: Thirty fetal rats used for analysis, were divided into three groups as follows: control group (n = 10), whose mothers were exposed to fresh air; group I (n =10), whose mothers were exposed to cigarette smoke; and group II (n =10), whose mothers were exposed to cigarette smoke and given 10 mg/kg per day NAC. In groups I and II, smoke exposure was started 4 weeks before the pregnancy, and continued to the 14th day of pregnancy, and in Group II, NAC was administered intraperitoneally for 14 days. The mothers and their fetuses were decapitated on the 14th day of pregnancy. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) levels were determined in the lung tissues of fetuses to determine the oxidant-antioxidant balance. RESULTS: While tissue MDA levels in Group I were found significantly higher than the control group (129.7+/-65.4 versus 63.4 +/-15.4 nmol/100 mg protein, P <0.05), GSH levels were significantly lower (17.1+/-7.3 versus 45.4 + 8.1 nmol/mg protein, P <0.01). Furthermore, in Group II, MDA levels were significantly lower (56.9+/-20.6 versus 129.7+/-65.4 nmol/100 mg protein, P <0.05), and GSH levels were significantly higher (34.57+/-10.7 versus 17.1+/-7.3 nmol/mg protein, P <0.0001) when compared with Group I. No statistically significant difference was found in tissue MDA and GSH levels between Group II and the control group (P >0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that smoke exposure during pregnancy causes oxidative damage in fetal lungs. This smoke-induced damage might be prevented by NAC.  相似文献

Because of the growing concern that exposures to airborne pollutants have adverse effects on fetal growth and early childhood neurodevelopment, and the knowledge that such exposures are more prevalent in disadvantaged populations, we assessed the joint impact of prenatal exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and material hardship on the 2-year cognitive development of inner-city children, adjusted for other sociodemographic risks and chemical exposures. The purpose was to evaluate the neurotoxicant effects of ETS among children experiencing different degrees of socioeconomic disadvantage, within a minority population. The sample did not include children exposed to active maternal smoking in the prenatal period. Results showed significant adverse effects of prenatal residential ETS exposure and the level of material hardship on 2-year cognitive development, as well as a significant interaction between material hardship and ETS, such that children with both ETS exposure and material hardship exhibited the greatest cognitive deficit. In addition, children with prenatal ETS exposure were twice as likely to be classified as significantly delayed, as compared with nonexposed children. Postnatal ETS exposure in the first 2 years of life did not contribute independently to the risk of developmental delay, over and above the risk posed by prenatal ETS exposure. The study concluded that prenatal exposure to ETS in the home has a negative impact on 2-year cognitive development, and this effect is exacerbated under conditions of material hardship in this urban minority sample.  相似文献

Cigarette smoking is associated with a wide variety of adverse reproductive outcomes, including increased infant mortality and decreased birth weight. Prenatal exposure to tobacco smoke, of which nicotine is a major teratogenic component, has also been linked to the acceleration of the risk for different psychiatric disorders, including conduct disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Whether this increased risk is influenced by the direct effects of gestational nicotine exposure on the developing fetus remains uncertain. In this study we provide experimental evidence for the effects of prenatal nicotine exposure on measures of attention and impulsivity in adult male rats. Offspring of females exposed during pregnancy to 0.06 mg/ml nicotine solution as the only source of water (daily consumption: 69.6±1.4 ml/kg; nicotine blood level: 96.0±31.9 ng/ml) had lower birth weight and delayed sensorimotor development measured by negative geotaxis, righting reflex, and grip strength. In the 5-choice serial reaction time test, adult rats showed increased numbers of anticipatory responses and omissions errors, more variable response times, and lower accuracy with evidence of delayed learning of the task demands when the 1 s stimulus duration was introduced. In contrast, prenatal nicotine exposure had no effect on exploratory locomotion or delay-discounting test. Prenatal nicotine exposure increased expression of the D5 dopamine receptor gene in the striatum, but did not change expression of other dopamine-related genes (DRD4, DAT1, NR4A2, and TH) in either the striatum or the prefrontal cortex. These data suggest a direct effect of prenatal nicotine exposure on important aspects of attention, inhibitory control, or learning later in life.  相似文献

The extent of smoke exposure via mother's milk and passive smoking was investigated in a prospective, longitudinal matched-pair study by comparison between children, whose mothers smoked substantially throughout pregnancy and nursing period and children whose mothers did not smoke. Our preliminary results show that not only infants of smoking mothers but also those of smoking fathers show reduction of birth weight. Smoking mothers weaned their babies earlier than non-smokers. Cotinine concentrations in breast milk depended on the number of cigarettes smoked. The highest urinary excretion of cotinine (as expressed by ng cotinine/mg creatinine ratios) were observed in infants fully breast-fed by smoking mothers. After weaning the values were in the same range as those of formula-fed infants of smoking mothers (exposed to passive smoking only). In the group of non-smokers only small or undetectable amounts of cotinine were found. Thus it is demonstrated that both nursing and--to a lower degree--passive smoking contribute to the exposure of infants to nicotine and its metabolite cotinine.  相似文献

Groups of 80 female rats were exposed to cigarette smoke from three types (code 13 = high tar, low nicotine; code 27 = low tar, medium nicotine; code 32 = high tar, high nicotine) of cigarettes in Maddox-ORNL smoking machines, eight cigarettes per day, 7 days per week, for up to 24 months. An additional group received sham exposures and a fifth group served as untreated controls. The sham-exposed animals had significantly lower body weights than the untreated controls. The smoke-exposed animals had significantly lower weights than the sham-exposed controls; the weights were lower for the code 27 and code 32 animals than for the code 13 animals during the second year of exposure. The survival of the code 13 animals was similar to that for the sham-exposed and untreated control group; survival times of the code 27 and code 32 animals were shorter. Body weight and survival reflected the high- and low-nicotine dose groups indicated by in vivo dosimetry measurements. Smoke-induced histopathologic lesions consisted primarily of pulmonary smoke granulomas; the smoke granulomas were less severe in the code 27 exposure group than in the groups exposed to smoke from code 13 or code 32 cigarettes. Additional changes included pulmonary alveolar epithelial hyperplasia, and squamous metaplasia and basal cell hyperplasia of laryngeal and tracheal epithelium. One primary epidermoid carcinoma was found in the lung of a code 27 rat. The rats tolerated the chronic exposures relatively well and certain of the smoke-induced lesions allowed differentiation between the different types of cigarettes.  相似文献

Influences of exposure to standard- (containing nicotine and tar) and nicotine-reduced-cigarette smoke on the pharmacokinetics of theophylline (20 mg/kg, per os) and cimetidine (50 mg/kg, per os) were investigated in rats. Animals were exposed to standard- or nicotine-reduced-cigarette smoke for 8 min with a "smoking machine". In control rats, theophylline concentrations in plasma increased rapidly, peaked 2 h later, and then decreased gradually. Concentrations of theophylline in plasma of rats exposed to standard- and nicotine-reduced-cigarette smoke were suppressed in comparison with that of control rats, and the suppressive effect of nicotine-reduced-cigarette smoke was weaker than that of standard-cigarette smoke. The suppression of theophylline concentrations in plasma induced by exposure to cigarette smoke may be due to nicotine and other constituents of the cigarette smoke, even if the effects are slight. For cimetidine, no difference was found between drug concentration in plasma of rats exposed to nicotine-reduced-cigarette smoke and that of control rats; however, the drug concentration in plasma of rats exposed to standard-cigarette smoke was markedly suppressed. These results suggest that the suppression of cimetidine concentrations in plasma may be due solely to nicotine in cigarette smoke.  相似文献

Epidemiological studies have implicated wood smoke as a risk factor for exacerbating asthma. However, comparisons of findings in animal models with those in humans are currently not possible, because detailed clinically relevant measurements of pulmonary function are not available in animal studies. Brown Norway rats were immunized with ovalbumin and exposed to either filtered air or wood smoke at 1 mg particulate matter/m(3) for 70 days and challenged with allergen during the last 4 days of exposure. Baseline values for dynamic lung compliance were lower while functional residual capacity was increased in rats exposed to wood smoke compared to rats exposed to filtered air. IFN-gamma levels were reduced and IL-4 levels increased in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and blood plasma, inflammatory lesions in the lungs were 21% greater, and airway mucous cells/mm basal lamina were non-significantly increased in rats exposed to wood smoke compared to controls. Collectively, these studies suggest that the pulmonary function was affected in rats by exposure to wood smoke and this decline was associated with only minor increases in inflammation of the lung. Therefore, this animal model may be useful to elucidate the mechanisms of the decline in pulmonary function caused by environmental pollutants when asthmatics are exposed to allergen.  相似文献

Meconium samples collected from 115 neonates were analysed for nicotine, cotinine and trans -3-hydroxycotinine (OH-cotinine) by means of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to identify prenatal smoke exposure. The self-reported maternal smoking status during pregnancy was determined by means of a questionnaire and verified by measurements in urine prior to childbirth. The total sum of nicotine and its metabolites (Sum(tot)) of the first passed meconium samples was 1560 +/- 1024 pmol/g in newborns of smoking mothers. Smoking of less than five cigarettes was clearly detected. Sum(tot) remained constant in all meconium samples passed by a neonate in succession. However, the proportion of nicotine decreased with the time of passage after birth and the OH-cotinine proportion increased, whereas cotinine hardly changed. Nicotine or its metabolites were not detectable in meconium (detection limit < 20 pmol/g), when the mothers were only exposed to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) using the HPLC method. The hypothesis that the content of nicotine metabolites in meconium reflects long-term smoke exposure could not be confirmed in newborns whose mothers had quit smoking during the latter half of pregnancy. Determining Sum(tot) enables the intensity of continuous smoking during pregnancy to be estimated in all meconium samples passed by a newborn.  相似文献

Numerous epidemiological studies in the human population clearly indicate that smoking while pregnant has deleterious effects on fetal development as well as long-term adverse consequences on postnatal development and maturation of several organ systems. Low birth weight, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), behavioral disorders including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), externalizing and internalizing behavioral problems and conduct disorders in children have all been linked to prenatal exposure to tobacco smoke. The major pharmacologically active chemical found in tobacco smoke is nicotine, and prenatal exposure to nicotine has been shown to have significant effect on the development of multiple organ systems, including the nervous, respiratory, and cardiovascular systems. In this review, we define mainstream and sidestream smoke, summarize the major classes of compounds found in cigarette smoke, and describe how use of laboratory animal models can be used to assess mechanisms of toxicity and risk in the human population in general. We then discuss the association with smoking during pregnancy and the occurrence of reduced lung function, low birth weight, the incidence of congenital structural malformations, SIDS, ADHD, cognitive impairment, and mood disorders in children, and review pertinent experimental studies using a variety of animal models of developmental nicotine exposure, including, rats, mice, monkeys, lambs, and pigs that have increased our understanding of the pathophysiology of these disorders.  相似文献

A large cohort of children exposed to cocaine in utero (n=189) were followed prospectively from birth to 4 years of age and compared to nonexposed children (n=185) on the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals-Preschool (CELF-P), a measure of receptive and expressive language abilities. Children exposed to cocaine in utero performed more poorly on the expressive and total language measures than nonexposed children after controlling for confounding variables, including prenatal exposure to alcohol, marijuana, and tobacco, as well as medical and sociodemographic variables. Children exposed to cocaine had more mild receptive language delays than nonexposed children and were less likely to have higher expressive abilities. Also, maternal factors such as language ability, performance IQ, race, and education correlated with child language abilities. Prenatal cigarette and marijuana exposure were related to deficits in specific language skills. Children placed in adoptive or foster care who were cocaine exposed demonstrated superior language skills compared to children exposed to cocaine who remained in biological relative or mother's care. These findings support a cocaine-specific effect on language skills in early childhood that may be modified with an enriched environment.  相似文献

Annually, approximately two million babies are exposed to cigarette smoke in utero and postnatally through cigarette smoking of their mothers. Exposure to mainstream cigarette smoke is known to impair both innate and adaptive immunities, and it has been hypothesized that the effects of in utero exposure to cigarette smoke on children's health might primarily stem from the adverse effects of cigarette smoke on the immune system. To simulate the environment that babies from smoking mothers encounter, we examined the effects of prenatal mainstream and postnatal sidestream cigarette smoke on spleen cell responses. Results show that postnatal exposure of newborn Balb/c mouse pups to sidestream cigarette smoke through the first 6 weeks of life strongly suppresses the antibody response of spleen cells to the T-cell-dependent antigen, sheep red blood cells. The reduction in the antibody response seen within 6 weeks of postnatal smoke exposure is much quicker than the published data on the time 25 weeks) required to establish reproducible immunosuppression in adult rats and mice. Moreover, the immunosuppression is not associated with significant changes in T-cell numbers or subset distribution. While the postnatal exposure to cigarette smoke did not affect the mitogenic response of T and B cells, the exposure inhibited the T cell receptor-mediated rise in the intracellular calcium concentration. These results suggest that the early postnatal period is highly sensitive to the immunosuppressive effects of environmental tobacco smoke, and the effects are causally associated with impaired antigen-mediated signaling in T cells.  相似文献

About 1 million babies are born each year after prenatal cigarette smoke (CS) exposure from maternal smoking which does not include involuntary maternal exposure to passive smoke. While past emphasis has been on immediately obvious perinatal consequences (e.g., preterm delivery, and low birthweight), smoking during pregnancy has recently emerged as a possible risk factor for later onset disease outcomes in the prenatally exposed offspring. This review brings together those epidemiologic and toxicologic studies demonstrating a link between prenatal CS exposure and subsequent disease vulnerabilities in the progeny. While disorders such as obesity, and type 2 diabetes are included in this category, this paper focuses on two immunologically-related outcomes, cancer and asthma. The review defines the current state of knowledge in this understudied area of children's health, sheds light on the seriousness of such disease vulnerabilities, and reveals gaps that need to be filled to provide a better understanding of the extent and nature of the problem.  相似文献

1-Bromopropane (1-BP) exhibits neuroreproductive toxicities in adult rats and humans. Here, we determined the effects of exposure of rat dams to 1-BP during pregnancy and lactation on the growth and sexual maturation of their offspring. In Experiment 1, 40 rats were exposed to 0, 100, 400 and 800ppm 1-BP during pregnancy and lactation for 8h/day. Ten rats that were not placed in chambers throughout the experiment served to observe the effect of separation of dams from offspring. In Experiment 2, three groups of 10 pregnant rats each were exposed to fresh air in three chambers and 10 other rats were exposed to 800ppm 1-BP during pregnancy and lactation for 8h/day. After delivery, offspring of the exposed and non-exposed dams were swapped so that they were nursed by the opposite dams. In Experiment 1, the survival rate and body weight of offspring were lower than the non-exposed in 1-BP dose-dependent manner. In Experiment 2, the survival rate and body weight of offspring (Group A) nursed by exposed dams and those (Group B) of exposed dams were significantly lower than non-exposed groups. The body weight of Group A was lower than that of Group B, although the two groups showed a significant equal decrease in the survival rate. The number of dead offspring from Group A was significantly higher. Our results indicate that exposure to 1-BP during pregnancy and lactation has comparable effects on survival rate, but exposure during lactation has a more adverse effect on growth of offspring than that during pregnancy. Moreover, exposure during lactation is associated with reduced early survival of third generation (F2) rats.  相似文献

Epidemiological studies indicate that parental smoking increases the risk for smoking in children. However, the underlying mechanisms by which parental smoking increases the risk for smoking are not known. The aim of these studies was to investigate if preadolescent tobacco smoke exposure, postnatal days 21-35, affects the rewarding effects of nicotine and nicotine withdrawal in adult rats. The rewarding effects of nicotine were investigated with the conditioned place preference procedure. Nicotine withdrawal was investigated with the conditioned place aversion procedure and intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS). Elevations in brain reward thresholds in the ICSS paradigm reflect a dysphoric state. Plasma nicotine and cotinine levels in the preadolescent rats immediately after smoke exposure were 188 ng/ml and 716 ng/ml, respectively. Preadolescent tobacco smoke exposure led to the development of nicotine dependence as indicated by an increased number of mecamylamine-precipitated somatic withdrawal signs in the preadolescent tobacco smoke exposed rats compared to the control rats. Nicotine induced a similar place preference in adult rats that had been exposed to tobacco smoke or air during preadolescence. Furthermore, mecamylamine induced place aversion in nicotine dependent rats but there was no effect of preadolescent tobacco smoke exposure. Finally, preadolescent tobacco smoke exposure did not affect the elevations in brain reward thresholds associated with precipitated or spontaneous nicotine withdrawal. These studies indicate that passive exposure to tobacco smoke during preadolescence leads to the development of nicotine dependence but preadolescent tobacco smoke exposure does not seem to affect the rewarding effects of nicotine or nicotine withdrawal in adulthood.  相似文献

目的 研究1959-1961年自然灾害饥荒暴露与成年后微量白蛋白尿发生风险的相关性,探讨胎儿和儿童期营养缺乏是否为成年后白蛋白尿发生的危险因素.方法 2011年6月至2012年1月在福建宁德及武夷山地区进行普通人群筛查,共入组4 504例于1953-1964年出生的受检者.按照出生时间分为4个组.1959-1961年出生者为胎儿期饥荒暴露组,1956-1958年出生者为儿童早期暴露组,1953-1955年出生者为儿童晚期暴露组,1962-1964年出生者为非暴露组.使用多元Logistics回归分析分析不同饥荒暴露组与非暴露组成年后微量白蛋白尿的校正比值比(OR).结果 以非暴露组为对照组,经校正年龄、体质量指数(BMI)、收缩压、空腹血糖、吸烟、饮酒等因素后,结果显示女性受试者胎儿期、儿童早期和儿童晚期饥荒暴露者成年后发生微量白蛋白尿的风险较非饥荒暴露组显著升高,OR及95% CI分别为1.880(1.038~3.405)(P=0.037),3.446 (1.327~8.945)(P=0.011)和6.817 (1.698~27.366)(P=0.007).结论 胎儿期和儿童期饥荒暴露与女性成年后出现白蛋白尿的风险存在显著的相关性,且这种相关性是独立于血糖、血压、BMI、吸烟和体力活动水平而独立存在的.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed nose-only to cigarette smoke for 10 or 20 min/day for up to 17 weeks. Other animals, identified as sham controls, were handled identically except that cigarettes were not placed in the smoking apparatus. A series of in vitro assays were used to monitor the effects of cigarette smoke and stress on hepatic S15 enzyme activities. Smoke exposure had no effect on any of the biotransformation pathways beyond that resulting from stress associated with the smoke procedure. However, smoking did significantly reduce hepatic levels of glutathione after 16 and 17 weeks of exposure. Smoking also caused a dramatic reduction in weight gain over the various exposure periods. This same effect, but to a lesser degree, was also noted in the sham control animals. These results demonstrate the definite need to reduce the obvious trauma caused by restraining rats for forced, nose-only exposure to the smoke. Until this is accomplished, results of studies on the influence of smoking on rat biochemistry and physiology will be difficult to properly interpret.  相似文献

Prenatal exposure to active maternal tobacco smoking elevates risk of cognitive and auditory processing deficits, and of smoking in offspring. Recent preclinical work has demonstrated a sex-specific pattern of reduction in cortical cholinergic markers following prenatal, adolescent, or combined prenatal and adolescent exposure to nicotine, the primary psychoactive component of tobacco smoke. Given the importance of cortical cholinergic neurotransmission to attentional function, we examined auditory and visual selective and divided attention in 181 male and female adolescent smokers and nonsmokers with and without prenatal exposure to maternal smoking. Groups did not differ in age, educational attainment, symptoms of inattention, or years of parent education. A subset of 63 subjects also underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while performing an auditory and visual selective and divided attention task. Among females, exposure to tobacco smoke during prenatal or adolescent development was associated with reductions in auditory and visual attention performance accuracy that were greatest in female smokers with prenatal exposure (combined exposure). Among males, combined exposure was associated with marked deficits in auditory attention, suggesting greater vulnerability of neurocircuitry supporting auditory attention to insult stemming from developmental exposure to tobacco smoke in males. Activation of brain regions that support auditory attention was greater in adolescents with prenatal or adolescent exposure to tobacco smoke relative to adolescents with neither prenatal nor adolescent exposure to tobacco smoke. These findings extend earlier preclinical work and suggest that, in humans, prenatal and adolescent exposure to nicotine exerts gender-specific deleterious effects on auditory and visual attention, with concomitant alterations in the efficiency of neurocircuitry supporting auditory attention.  相似文献
