Hydrocolloids have been proposed as cholesterol-lowering agents, but their viscosity limits their use in human nutrition. A low level (1 %) of hydrocolloids (guar gum, (GG); xanthan gum, (XG); and konjac mannan) was investigated in rats fed 0.2 g/100 g cholesterol diets. Food intake and body weight gain were not altered by the diets. Bile flow and cholesterol bile flux were not modified by diet, whereas the bile acid flux was greater in rats fed hydrocolloid diets. The cecal pool of bile acids was greater than control rats only in rats fed the XG diet (+71%, P<0.001). The fecal excretion of neutral sterols was stimulated in rats fed the hydrocolloid diets; cholesterol apparent digestibility (60% in controls) was reduced to 30-36% in rats fed hydrocolloids. Bile acid fecal excretion was not altered by diet treatment. As a result, apparent steroid balance was about +40 micromol/d in controls and only +10 to +20 micromol/d in rats fed hydrocolloids. Both plasma cholesterol and triglycerides were significantly lower than controls in rats fed XG, but only cholesterol was lower in rats fed the GG diet. These effects were essentially found in the d <1.040 kg/L fraction. Liver cholesterol content was significantly lower than in controls in rats fed the GG or XG diets. Liver HMG CoA reductase was not affected by the hydrocolloid diets. In conclusion, a low percentage of viscous hydrocolloids lowers plasma cholesterol in cholesterol-fed rats. Inhibition of intestinal cholesterol absorption may be the primary mechanism.  相似文献

Dietary fiber from fenugreek blunts glucose and cholesterol after a meal and regulates the production of cholesterol in the liver. The mechanisms for these effects have not been fully elucidated. Fenugreek seeds contain 45.4% dietary fiber (32% insoluble and 13.3% soluble), and the gum is composed of galactose and mannose. The latter compounds are associated with reduced glycemia and cholesterolemia. Fenugreek's hypoglycemic effect has been especially documented in humans and animals with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. In addition, this dietary fiber has potential for widespread use in the food industry because its galactomannan composition has emulsifying and stabilizing properties. Flour supplemented with 8%-10% fenugreek dietary fiber has been used in the production of baked goods such as bread, pizza, muffins, and cakes. This application to flour allows for the production of functional foods that may be widely acceptable to consumers observing western diets.  相似文献

1. Adult male rats were maintained on diets containing 80 g methylcellulose/kg of low (25 cP), medium (400 cP) and high (1500 cP) viscosity. 2. After 10 d, the viscosity of stomach and caecal contents was found to have increased in proportion to that of the dietary fibre. Concentrations of volatile fatty acids in caecal digesta were lowest with the high-viscosity fibre but acetate was the major acid present with all three diets. Acetate was the only acid found in significant quantities in hepatic portal venous plasma and concentrations of this acid were unaffected by diet. 3. Concentrations of glucose in arterial blood were low with the medium- and high-viscosity diets while the content of liver glycogen was high. These effects of fibre were not directly on glucose absorption as the intestines were net removers of the hexose at the time of sampling. 4. Hepatic lipogenesis and plasma triacylglycerol concentrations were both higher in rats fed on the low-viscosity fibre. Plasma cholesterol concentrations, hepatic cholesterol synthesis and faecal bile acid excretion were not altered by dietary fibre viscosity. 5. We conclude that the effects of dietary fibre on carbohydrate absorption and storage and fatty acid synthesis are a function of the viscosity of the fibre in solution, high viscosity slowing the digestion and absorption of nutrients in the small intestine. Large-bowel microbial fermentation is not of direct significance to these events. In contrast, effects of fibre polysaccharides on sterol metabolism seem not to be related to their rheological properties.  相似文献

1. Male Wistar rats (approximately 100 g) were given fibre-free semi-synthetic diets containing either casein or albumin (168 g/kg diet) as the protein source with or without guar gum (75 g/kg diet) (casein, albumin, casein guar gum and albumin-guar gum groups). 2. Small intestinal length, weights of caecal tissue and contents and plasma enteroglucagon concentration were significantly increased in guar-gum-fed animals compared with the fibre-free groups. 3. Total caecal weight and plasma enteroglucagon concentration were higher in the albumin-guar gum group compared with the casein-guar gum group. The weights of caecal tissue and contents were significantly increased in rats given the fibre-free albumin diet compared with those consuming a similar diet with casein as the protein source, although daily food intake tended to be lower. 4. It is concluded that the effect of materials classed as dietary fibre may be significantly influenced by the non-polysaccharide component of the diet, and that such interactions may influence both the growth and endocrine activity of the gastrointestinal tract.  相似文献

This study seeks to improve the beneficial effects of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum L.) galactomannan (GM) in lowering the plasma lipid profile and weight. Three different combinations of diets were prepared with fenugreek GM--(a) fenugreek GM + water (GM); (b) fenugreek GM + sodium bicarbonate (GMB); and (c) fenugreek GM + bicarbonate + albumin (GMBA)--and their in vitro water retention capacity and in vivo lipid-lowering effect were studied. Distilled water and sodium bicarbonate were used as controls. The sodium bicarbonate significantly increased the in vitro water-holding capacity of fenugreek GM (49.1 +/- 8.7 vs. 21.6 +/- 0.9 g of water/g of dry weight, P < .01). Administration by oral intubation of the combination GMBA to male albino Wistar rats (250 mg/kg of body weight) over a 4-week period was the most effective in reducing body weight (-27.0 +/- 0.4%, P < .001). Within this period, the combinations GMBA and GMB brought about the most significant reduction in the levels of plasma total cholesterol (P < .005). The GMBA combination was also the most effective in reducing levels of plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P < .001) and the atherogenicity indices. GM, GMB, and GMBA brought about significant (P < .01, .001, and .001, respectively) increases in the plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, with the highest increase coming with GMBA. A significant increase in plasma triglycerides (P < .05) was brought about by the GMBA combination, probably resulting from the rapid reduction of body weight observed. Food intake was reduced by GM, GMB, and GMBA, while water intake increased in that order. The GMB combination significantly reduced transit time (P < .01) compared to GM. On the other hand, GMB and GMBA improved glycemic control, compared to GM. We conclude that albumin and sodium bicarbonate have the ability to improve some beneficial physiological effects of fenugreek GM. This finding could have applications in the areas of human obesity, weight loss, and the control of blood lipids.  相似文献

The present study investigated the digestion and cholesterol-lowering effects of the water-soluble NSP guar gum (GG) and sodium alginate (SA) in laboratory animals. Groups of five male Wistar strain rats were fed semi-purified cholesterol-free diets containing 0, 50 or 100 g NSP source/kg for 21 d which comprised a 14-d adaptation period followed by a 7-d balance period. Weight gain over the balance period and food conversion ratio decreased linearly with increasing NSP intake ( and respectively). DM digestibility decreased with increasing NSP intake and this effect was greater for SA-containing diets compared with GG-containing diets At the lower inclusion rate, 0.9-1.0 of the additional NSP was digested, but this value fell to 0.8 for both NSP sources at the 100 g/kg inclusion rate, implying that the capacity for near complete digestion of the test NSP had been exceeded. Intestinal tissue mass was increased in response to inclusion of both NSP sources. Caecal digesta pH decreased linearly with additional GG, but increased slightly with consumption of SA. Total caecal short-chain fatty acid concentrations (micromol/g caecal contents) increased markedly with 50 g GG/kg but did not increase further with 100 g GG/kg, and were slightly lower than control values in rats consuming SA. Plasma cholesterol concentration fell linearly with increasing NSP in the diet and the effect was similar for both GG and SA. Total output of faecal bile acids rose in rats fed 50 g GG/kg and 50 g SA/kg (59 micromol/7 d v. 24 micromol/7 d for control rats) with no further increase at the higher inclusion rate. These results show that SA has a strong hypocholesterolaemic effect in rats which is similar to that of GG, and that this effect is most likely to be mediated through an interruption in the entero-hepatic circulation of bile acids and not through increased hepatic supply of propionate from fermentation of the NSP in the large bowel.  相似文献

Six growing pigs (30-75 kg) were fed on semi-purified diets containing either 30 g maize oil/kg diet (LFM), 30 g soya-bean oil-tallow mixture (1:1, w/w)/kg diet (LFST) or 160 g soya-bean oil-tallow mixture (1:1, w/w)/kg diet (HFST) without and with the addition of guar gum (40 g/kg diet). Plasma glucose and insulin concentrations following twice daily feeding at 09.00 and 21.00 h were measured, during 24 h periods, in blood sampled from a permanent indwelling vena cava catheter. The source and level of dietary fat had no significant effect on pre-prandial plasma glucose or insulin concentrations except for insulin with diet LFST in the morning (P less than 0.05). Addition of guar gum to the diets had no significant effect on pre-prandial plasma glucose and insulin levels. The peak post-prandial plasma glucose and insulin levels were not significantly affected by dietary fat. The addition of guar gum, however, significantly reduced (P less than 0.05) the peak post-prandial plasma glucose concentration with diets LFM and LFST and also the peak plasma insulin concentration for all diets except for diet HFST in the morning. The time taken to reach the peak post-prandial plasma glucose and insulin concentrations was not significantly affected by dietary fat but it was increased by the addition of guar gum, although the differences were not always significant.  相似文献

Fenugreek (Trifolium foenum graecum) a leguminous herb, is extensively cultivated in India, Mediterranean region and North Africa. It is used for culinary and medicinal purposes and also for fodder in various parts of the world. The hypoglycemic effect of fenugreek seeds and leaves was tested in normal and diabetic subjects. Six protocols A, B, C, D, E and F involved the acute administration (single dose of 25 g of seeds, 5 g of gum isolate and 150 g of leaves) of whole fenugreek seeds, defatted fenugreek seeds, gum isolate, degummed fenugreek seeds, cooked fenugreek seeds and cooked fenugreek leaves to healthy subjects. The rise in plasma glucose after a dose of glucose or meal was prevented by fenugreek seeds. The serum insulin levels were also modified (P<0.05). The reduction in area under glucose curve was greatest with whole seeds (42.4%), followed by gum isolate (37.5%), extracted seeds (36.9%), and cooked seeds (35.1%) in that order. The degummed seeds and fenugreek leaves showed little effect on glycemia. Fenugreek seeds were also administered for 21 days to diabetic subjects. A significant imporvement in plasma glucose and insulin responses was observed in these subjects. The 24 hr urinary glucose output and serum cholesterol levels were also reduced (P<0.05).  相似文献

The effects of raw potato starch (RPS) and high amylose corn starch (HAS) on cecal digestion, lipid metabolism and mineral utilization (Ca and Mg) were compared in rats adapted to semipurified diets. The diets provided either 710 g wheat starch/100 g diet (control) alone or 510 g wheat starch/100 g diet plus 200 g resistant starch/100 g (RPS or HAS). Compared with rats fed the control diet, significant cecal hypertrophy (240% after 7 d of the fiber consumption) and short-chain fatty acids accumulation (especially propionic and butyric acids) occurred after both resistant starch diets. Apparent Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe and Cu absorptions were similarly enhanced by RPS and HAS (50, 50, 27, 21 and 90%, respectively). Cholesterol absorption was reduced to 14% of intake in rats fed RPS or HAS compared with 47% absorption in control rats. RPS and HAS were also effective in lowering plasma cholesterol (-31 and -27%, respectively) and triglycerides (-28 and -22%, respectively). There was no effect of the diets on cholesterol in d > 1.040 kg/L lipoproteins (HDL), whereas RPS and HAS depressed cholesterol in d < 1.040 kg/L lipoproteins (especially in triglyceride-rich lipoproteins). Moreover, there were lower concentrations of cholesterol (-50 and -40%, respectively) and triglycerides (-53 and -47%, respectively) in the livers of RPS- and HAS-fed rats. Thus, RPS and HAS have similar effects on intestinal fermentation, mineral utilization and cholesterol metabolism in rats.  相似文献

Because fatty acid (FA) metabolism of cats is unique, effects of dietary fish and vegetable oil supplementation on plasma lipids, lipoproteins, lecithin/cholesterol acyl transferase activities, and plasma phospholipid and esterified cholesterol (EC) FAs were investigated. Cats were fed a commercial diet supplemented with 8 g oil/100 g diet for 4 weeks using either high-oleic-acid sunflower oil (diet H), Menhaden fish oil (diet M), or safflower oil (diet S). When supplemented, diet M contained sufficient arachidonate (AA), but diets H and S were deficient. We hypothesized that diet M would modify plasma lipid metabolism, increase FA long-chain n-3 (LCn-3) FA content but not deplete AA levels. Also, diet S would show linoleic acid (LA) accumulation without conversion to AA, and both vegetable oil supplements would dilute dietary AA content when fed to meet cats' energy needs. Plasma samples on weeks 0, 2, and 4 showed no alterations in total cholesterol or nonesterified FA concentrations. Unesterified cholesterol decreased and EC increased in all groups, whereas lecithin/cholesterol acyl transferase activities were unchanged. Diet M showed significant triacylglycerol lowering and decreased pre–β-lipoprotein cholesterol. Plasma phospholipid FA profiles revealed significant enrichment of 18:1n-9 with diet H, LA and 20:2n-6 with diet S, and FA LCn-3FA with diet M. Depletion of AA was observed with diets H and S but not with diet M. Diet M EC FA profiles revealed specificities for LA and 20:5n-3 but not 22:5n-3 or 22:6n-3. Oversupplementation of some commercial diets with vegetable oils causes AA depletion in young cats due to dietary dilution. Findings are consistent with the current recommendations for at least 0.2 g AA/kg diet and that fish oil supplements provide both preformed LCn-3 polyunsaturated FA and AA.  相似文献

In adult male rats fed on a cholesterol-free synthetic diet, plasma cholesterol concentrations were lowest with oat bran, intermediate with cellulose and highest with wheat bran. Plasma triacylglycerols (TAG) were similar with wheat bran and cellulose but higher with oat bran. The concentrations and pools of caecal volatile fatty acids (VFA) were lowest with cellulose and equally higher with oat bran and wheat bran. Plasma VFA concentrations in the hepatic portal vein reflected those in caecal digesta and were unrelated to plasma cholesterol. Feeding oat bran after extraction with n-pentane gave plasma cholesterol concentrations similar to that found with wheat bran. Reconstitution of oat bran with extracted lipids did not restore the cholesterol-lowering effect. Addition of the extracted material to a wheat-bran diet had no effect on plasma cholesterol. Plasma TAG were higher with the oat bran and reconstituted-oat-bran diets than with wheat-bran or cellulose diets. However, extracted oat bran + safflower oil gave similar TAG concentrations to that with wheat bran. These extractions and additions did not change caecal bile acid or neutral sterol concentrations. Effects of these diets on plasma cholesterol were unrelated to their tocotrienol or tocopherol content. Addition of n-pentane to oat bran followed by evaporation of solvent gave plasma cholesterol concentrations that were significantly higher than untreated oat bran but lower than similarly treated wheat bran. It is concluded that oat bran affects cholesterol metabolism through a pentane-soluble component as well as non-starch polysaccharides. It appears that the activity of this lipid is not transferable by simple addition of the solvent extract to the whole diet.  相似文献

1. Simple gastric cannulas were surgically fitted to four pigs, initially of 30 kg live weight, to examine the effects of guar gum on gastric emptying. 2. Four semi-purified high-fat diets based on starch, casein, soya-bean oil and tallow were given to each pig. They contained 0 (control), 20, 40 or 60 g powdered guar gum/kg diet. The meals as fed contained 257 g dry matter (DM)/kg. 3. The contents of the stomach were evacuated, with rinsing, before feeding or 0.5, 1, 2 or 4 h after feeding. 4. The mean pH of the digesta was unaffected by guar gum until 4 h after feeding when the value increased as the amount of guar gum in the diet rose. 5. The only significant effects of guar gum on the emptying of digesta and its components (compared with the control diet) were to reduce the rate of emptying of (a) digesta 1 h after feeding (60 g/kg diet) and 4 h after feeding (40 and 60 g/kg diets), (b) dry matter and glucose 1 h after feeding (60 g/kg diet), (c) nitrogen 1 h after feeding (60 g/kg diet) and 4 h after feeding (40 and 60 g/kg diets). 6. When expressed on a half-time (T50) basis, the emptying of digesta and N (but not of DM and glucose) were significantly slower for diets containing 40 and 60 g guar gum/kg than for the control diet. 7. The apparent viscosity of the gastric digesta ranged between 0.5 and 23.7% of the values for the diets as consumed. 8. It was concluded that the effects of guar gum on gastric emptying of high-solid meals were small, and that this was unlikely to be an important aspect of the mechanism by which guar gum reduces postprandial blood glucose concentrations.  相似文献

Different classes of fibres differ in their potential to lower lipid levels. In order to examine how chemically diverse fibres differ in their hypolipidaemic activity, mucilages of varying chemical composition isolated from three different sources were administered to experimental animals and the metabolism of lipids and lipoproteins was studied. The mucilages used were a galactomannan isolated from fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) seeds, a glucomannan from Dioscorea esculenta tubers and an arabinogalactan from Colocasia esculenta tubers. Rats were fed these mucilages at a dose of 4 mg/100 g body weight per d for 8 weeks and the changes in the levels of total cholesterol and triacylglycerols in serum, liver and aorta were analysed. All these mucilages decreased lipid levels both in serum and tissues. Among these mucilages, glucomannan showed the most hypolipidaemic effect followed by galactomannan and arabinogalactan. Further, hepatocytes were isolated from the livers of mucilage-fed rats and the synthesis and secretion of lipoproteins were studied using metabolic labelling. There was a decrease in the synthesis and secretion of apoB-containing lipoproteins, mainly VLDL, by hepatocytes isolated from mucilage-fed rats when compared to control (P<0.05). This was further confirmed by pulse chase analysis. Among the different mucilages, mannose-rich glucomannan showed the most effect followed by galactomannan, and mannose-free arabinogalactan showed minimal effect. Comparison of relative viscosity and water-holding capacity showed that mannan-rich mucilages like galactomannan and glucomannan, which showed greater hypolipidaemic effect, had greater relative viscosity and water-holding capacity. The present results suggested that the hypolipidaemic effect of dietary fibre involves a decrease in hepatic production of VLDL and further that it varies with the nature of the fibre.  相似文献

The effects of corn oil, guar gum and cellulose on mucosal proliferation were investigated in rats. Animals were allocated to three groups and fed a fiber-free diet or diets containing 100 g/kg of cellulose or guar gum. Each group was subdivided to receive corn oil at 40 or 80 g/kg. The crypt cell production rate (CCPR) was determined after 28 d. Consumption of guar gum or corn oil led to greater CCPR in the ileum and cecum. In a second experiment, animals were allocated to two groups and fed diets containing either cellulose or guar gum (100 g/kg). Each group was again subdivided to receive either corn oil (80 g/kg) or minimal lipid (linolenic acid, 10 g/kg). The trophic effect of guar gum occurred even in the low lipid-fed group, indicating that guar gum exerts a positive effect on cell turnover independently of any interaction with luminal lipid. However, the highest CCPR occurred in animals fed guar gum and corn oil. Postprandial enteroglucagon and gastrin concentrations were highest in animals fed both guar gum and corn oil. Thus, corn oil and guar gum exert independent trophic effects on the intestinal mucosa. The combination of effects led to a three- to four-fold increase in colon mucosal CCPR.  相似文献

Ninety-six 14-d-old male broiler chicks were divided into three dietary groups and fed a corn-soybean meal diet, a barley diet with beta-glucanase and that diet without beta-glucanase. All diets contained 4 g cholesterol/kg. Average daily body weight gain, plasma total cholesterol concentration, LDL cholesterol concentration and digestibility of lipids and protein were lowest (P < 0.05) in the chicks fed the barley diet without beta-glucanase and highest (P < 0.05) in the chicks fed corn-soybean meal diet. Supplementation of the barley diet with beta-glucanase resulted in greater (P < 0.05) average daily weight gain, plasma total and LDL cholesterol concentrations and digestibility of lipids. Viscosity of small intestinal digesta was greatest in chicks fed barley, lowest in those fed the corn-soybean diet and intermediate in chicks fed enzyme-treated barley. Significant (P < 0.01) negative correlations occurred between viscosity of the small intestinal contents and average daily weight gain, plasma total and LDL cholesterol concentrations, and digestibility of lipids and protein. A lower concentration of insoluble beta-glucans in small intestinal digesta of the chicks fed barley supplemented with beta-glucanase compared with the chicks fed the unsupplemented barley diet reflects hydrolytic activity of the supplemental beta-glucanase in the diet.  相似文献

Methionine has been shown to increase plasma cholesterol in animals. In the present study, mechanisms were investigated by which methionine could alter cholesterol metabolism. In the first experiment, forty growing rats were fed four casein-based diets differing in methionine content (2.6, 3.5, 4.5 or 6.0 g/kg) for 14 d. In the second experiment, isolated rat hepatocytes were incubated in media supplemented with 50, 100 or 200 micromol/l methionine. Dietary methionine tended to increase plasma homocysteine concentrations in the rats (P=0.058). A weak positive correlation between circulating homocysteine and plasma cholesterol was observed (R2 0.27, P<0.01). Rats fed 3.5 g/kg or more of methionine had higher concentrations of cholesterol in their plasma, in lipoprotein fractions of density (rho; kg/l) 1.0061.063, and in liver than rats fed 2.6 g/kg methionine. Rats fed 6 g/kg methionine had a higher hepatic expression of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase and cholesterol-7alpha-hydroxylase than rats fed less methionine. The phosphatidylcholine:phosphatidylethanolamine ratio in rat liver increased with rising dietary methionine concentration; the relative mRNA concentrations of phosphatidylethanolamine N-methyltransferase and cystathionine beta-synthase remained unaffected. Hepatocytes incubated in media supplemented with 100 or 200 micromol/l methionine had a higher cholesterol synthesis than hepatocytes incubated in a medium supplemented with 50 micromol/l methionine; the LDL uptake in hepatocytes was independent of the methionine concentration of the medium. In conclusion, the present study suggests that dietary methionine induces hypercholesterolaemia at least in part via an enhanced hepatic cholesterol synthesis.  相似文献

To characterize further the effect of protein-mineral interaction on plasma cholesterol, four groups of rabbits were placed on cholesterol-free, semi-purified diets for 12 weeks. The diets were similar in proximate composition with either casein or soya-bean protein isolate as the protein source (250 g/kg). The dietary zinc content of the casein diets was increased to 22 mg/kg to equal that of the soya-bean diets. The copper content was set at 2 and 6 mg/kg. There were no differences in weight gain; all animals grew at a similar rate. When the dietary Zn content was equalized, the plasma and liver cholesterol responses were similar regardless of the source of protein. Differences in liver Cu and Zn were observed. As dietary Cu increased, Cu decreased and Zn increased in the liver. Hepatic Zn was also higher in soya-bean-fed than in casein-fed animals. No effects on plasma Cu and Zn were seen. The addition of Zn to the casein diet resulted in a similar plasma cholesterol to that of animals fed on the soya-bean diet, suggesting that casein-induced hypercholesterolaemia is due to a marginal Zn intake.  相似文献

Recent data concerning the effect of soybean 7S globulin subunits on the upregulation of LDL receptors in Hep G2 cells identified the alpha' subunit as the candidate responsible for this biological effect. In vivo evaluation of this subunit on cholesterol homeostasis was hampered by the lack of suitable amounts of alpha' chain. A novel separation procedure allowed us to investigate the effects of alpha' subunit administration on plasma cholesterol and triglyceride levels, as well as on the activity of liver beta-VLDL receptors of rats fed a hypercholesterolemic (HC) diet. Rats were divided into 9 groups fed the following diets for 28 d: standard diet; HC diet; HC diets + 5, 10, and 20 mg/(kg body weight. d) of alpha' subunit; HC diets + 50, 100, and 200 mg/(kg body weight. d) of soybean 7S globulin; HC diet + 200 mg/(kg body weight. d) clofibrate. The highest dose of the alpha' subunit decreased plasma cholesterol and triglycerides 36 and 34%, respectively, in rats fed the HC diet; 10-fold amounts clofibrate reduced plasma cholesterol and triglycerides 38 and 41%. The activity of liver beta-VLDL receptors of rats fed the HC diet with the highest dose of the alpha' subunit had a 96% increase in binding compared with the HC diet group, thus restoring the receptor activity to that of rats fed the standard diet. These results represent the first in vivo evidence of both the plasma lipid-lowering properties and the upregulation of liver beta-VLDL receptors induced by the soybean alpha' subunit.  相似文献

For a 28-d experimental period, rats were fed a nonpurified, cereal-based diet containing 9.1% supplemental beef tallow or fish oil or one of the following beef tallow:fish oil blends: 95:5; 90:10; 80:20 and 50:50. All diets provided between 21.3 and 22.7 g linoleic acid/kg. Higher fish oil intake was paralleled by elevated incorporation of long-chain (n-3) fatty acids in plasma total lipid, mainly at the expense of arachidonic acid. Significant inverse relationships were found between plasma total (n-3) fatty acid concentration and plasma triglyceride, cholesterol or free fatty acid concentrations. Fish oil intake did not lead to a shift of triglycerides or cholesterol from the plasma to the tissues (liver, heart, kidneys). Reduced plasma cholesterol concentrations in the fish oil-fed rats could not be explained by higher fecal excretion of neutral sterols and bile acids. In vivo lipid peroxidation, assessed by urinary malondialdehyde excretion, was enhanced when diets containing greater than 1.8% fish oil were fed.  相似文献

The formation of SCFA in rats fed fermented oat fibre concentrates was compared with that of rats fed native oat fibre concentrate. The cultures used were lactic acid bacteria consisting of Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus (V2), the exopolysaccharide-producing strain Pediococcus damnosus 2.6 (Pd) and L. reuteri (Lr). The materials were incorporated into test diets yielding a concentration of indigestible carbohydrates of 80 g/kg (dry weight). Rats fed the V2-fermented fibre-concentrate diet yielded higher caecal and distal concentrations of acetic acid (P < 0.01) than rats fed the native fibre concentrate. All the fermented fibre concentrates resulted in a higher propionic acid concentration in the distal colon (P < 0.05), while rats fed Pd-fermented fibre concentrate resulted in lower concentration of butyric acid (P < 0.05, P < 0.01) in all parts of the hindgut as compared with rats fed the native fibre concentrates. Butyrate concentrations ranged between 5-11 micromol/g (distal colon) and 6-8 micromol/g (13 d faeces). Higher proportions of acetic acid (P < 0.05; P < 0.01) were observed in the caecum of rats fed the fermented fibre concentrates. Rats fed Pd- and Lr-fermented fibre concentrates produced higher proportions of propionic acid (P < 0.05; P < 0.01) in the caecum. Changes in SCFA formation in the caecum, distal colon and faeces of rats fed the fermented samples compared with the native sample indicate that these microbes probably survive in the hindgut and that modification of the microflora composition with fermented foods is possible. This may be important for the gastrointestinal flora balance in relation to colonic diseases.  相似文献
