Introduction
Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are a major global clinical problem, causing substantial mortality and morbidity especially in hospitals. Healthcare professionals (HCPs) knowledges’, attitude and practices are crucial points to evaluate the hospital safety environment. Objective of the study was to investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of HCPs regarding the ADRs reporting system. Methods
A cross-sectional survey was conducted between January and February of 2013 in nine tertiary care hospitals (governmental and private) that provide highly specialized medical services in Riyadh, Qassim, and the Eastern region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A validated questionnaire was used to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of HCPs regarding the ADR reporting system. All statistical analyses were performed using SAS version 9.2.Results
In total, 480 questionnaires were distributed, and the response rate was 70% (n?=?336). Only 33% of the participants were aware of the National Pharmacovigilance Centre (NPC). Of those HCPs who were familiar with the NPC and their responsibility to report ADRs, most (50%) were pharmacists, followed by physicians (24%) and nurses (16%), and these differences were statistically significant (p?<?0.01). Twenty-seven percent of the participants were involved in reporting ADRs; among these HCPs, 62% were pharmacists, 26% were nurses, and 6% were physicians. Most participants (95%) favoured reporting ADRs caused by antibiotics and new/old drugs. The prominent factors discouraging ADR reporting included fear that the report might be incorrect (46%) and lack of time (44%).Conclusions
A significant lack of knowledge, positive attitudes, and practices regarding ADRs and reporting was observed in hospital HCPs. This finding represents an international concern, and urgent action is needed to promote drug safety and pharmacovigilance in this region. 相似文献3.

Introduction
Pharmacists have a unique opportunity to promote good health through assuring the quality use of medicines. One of the most important tools to achieve this is medication counseling. Counseling plays an important role in enhancing medication adherence and optimizing medication therapy. Therefore, for improving the quality of services delivered by community pharmacists, it is essential to assess the current situation of counseling services delivered to patients.Aims and objectives
To date, there is a paucity of data regarding the quality of counseling services delivered to patients in community pharmacies in Saudi Arabia. This study aims to fill this gap through evaluating the counseling skills and counseling content delivered by pharmacists in a sample of community pharmacies in Qassim region, Saudi Arabia. Methods
The study was conducted at eleven community pharmacies in Qassim region. A convenient sample of community pharmacies was chosen based on their willingness to participate. To gather information, a form was prepared based on the core and complementary drug use indicators for evaluation of drug use in healthcare settings developed by the WHO. The study was conducted through observing the counseling services performed by the community pharmacists who participated in the study. Results
Two hundred and thirty-five forms were completed in eleven community pharmacies. A total of 44.4% of the counseling skills was found to be performed adequately, while only 20.1% of the counseling contents were performed adequately. Conclusions
The overall standard of medication counseling services provided to patients to improve usage of their medications, and consequently, their well-being was poor. 相似文献4.

Background
Complementary and Alternative Medication (CAM) is commonly used among women with breast cancer to improve their quality of life (QoL). However, few studies examine the prevalence of CAM and its’ relation to the patients’ QoL among women with breast cancer. Methods
A cross-sectional study was conducted among 95 women with breast cancer at a tertiary hospital in Saudi Arabia. The outcome measure of interest was the QoL. The correlation was used to assess the association between CAM use and QoL. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were used to examine the factors that affect the use of CAM. The data was analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24.0.Results
CAM use was reported by 81.1% of the study participants. The most commonly used CAM therapy was spiritual therapy 70.5%, followed by honey 36.8%, olive oil 24.2% and 23.2% herbal therapy. We found that those who were undergoing cancer treatment had a significantly higher percentage of CAM usage as compared to those not undergoing cancer therapy (72.6% vs. 8.4%, P=0.008). With regards to QoL, there was a statistically significant difference between CAM users and non-CAM users in global health status (73.2% vs. 64.8%, P = 0.049).Conclusions
CAM therapy was commonly used among women in our study sample which was correlated with higher overall global QoL. As CAM is widely used, health care providers may need to discuss the use of CAM with breast cancer women and be up to date on the benefits and risk of CAM use through well-equipped training programs and workshops. 相似文献7.

Objective
Based on the theory on planned behavior, perception or attitude is found to be a well-established predictor of healthcare providers’ intentions to perform different behaviors. Also, improving knowledge was proposed to affect their practice as well. In Jordan, many studies have been conducted to evaluate healthcare providers’ knowledge and perception towards pharmacovigilance but no intervention or training was provided. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of an educational workshop on the knowledge and perception of healthcare providers towards pharmacovigilance in a Jordanian tertiary teaching hospital. Methods
An interventional study conducted in Jordan University Hospital on various healthcare providers to assess their pre- and post-knowledge and perception towards pharmacovigilance and adverse drug reactions (ADRs) reporting via questionnaire before and after an educational workshop. Results
Among the 200 invited healthcare providers, 150 attended the educational workshop (response rate 75.0%). Pre-workshop, healthcare providers showed an overall low knowledge score (7.8/19), where only 8.7% could define pharmacovigilance correctly. On the other hand, they showed a favorable perception score (33.6/39).Following educational workshop, knowledge scores significantly improved by 67.9% (P-value <0.05). A similar finding was obtained for perception scores, where perception scores significantly improved by 10.1% following workshop (P-value <0.05).Conclusion
Continuous efforts are needed to implement different strategies including education modules and the provision of appropriate training programs to increase awareness and improve perception towards pharmacovigilance among healthcare providers. Future study is needed to evaluate the impact of improving knowledge and perception on ADRs reporting practice. 相似文献8.

Background
Within the competitive pharmacy market environment, community pharmacies are required to develop efficient marketing strategies based on contemporary information about consumer behavior in order to attract clients and develop customer loyalty. Objectives
This study aimed to investigate the consumers’ preferences concerning the selection of pharmacy and over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, and to identify customer segments in relation to these preferences. Methods
A cross-sectional study was conducted between February and March 2016 on a convenient quota sample of 300 participants recruited in the metropolitan area of Thessaloniki, Greece. The main instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire with close-ended, multiple choice questions. To identify customer segments, Two-Step cluster analysis was conducted. Results
Three distinct pharmacy customer clusters emerged. Customers of the largest cluster (49%; ‘convenience customers’) were mostly younger consumers. They gave moderate to positive ratings to factors affecting the selection of pharmacy and OTCs; convenience, and previous experience and the pharmacist’s opinion, received the highest ratings. Customers of the second cluster (35%; ‘loyal customers’) were mainly retired; most of them reported visiting a single pharmacy. They gave high ratings to all factors that influence pharmacy selection, especially the pharmacy’s staff, and factors influencing the purchase of OTCs, particularly previous experience and the pharmacist’s opinion. Customers of the smallest cluster (16%; ‘convenience and price-sensitive customers’) were mainly retired or unemployed with low to moderate education, and low personal income. They gave the lowest ratings to most of the examined factors; convenience among factors influencing pharmacy selection, whereas previous experience, the pharmacist’s opinion and product price among those affecting the purchase of OTCs, received the highest ratings. Conclusions
The community pharmacy market comprised of distinct customer segments that varied in the consumer preferences concerning the selection of pharmacy and OTCs, the evaluation of pharmaceutical services and products, and demographic characteristics. 相似文献9.

Background
High satisfaction with, and adherence to, warfarin therapy are linked to better international normalized ratio (INR) control and good therapeutic outcomes. Objective
This study was conducted to identify the association between satisfaction with, and adherence to, warfarin therapy and the control of the INR within the target therapeutic range. Methods
A cross-sectional study was conducted from June 1 to August 31, 2016, at the Anticoagulation Clinic in the Cardiology Center at King Fahad Hospital, Qassim, Saudi Arabia. All adult patients included in the study were 18-years-old or older and were on warfarin therapy for 6?months or more. The data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a structured questionnaire. Results
A total of 298 patients were included. Of them, 194 patients (65.1%) were males and 152 (51.0%) were classified as satisfied with their warfarin therapy. Secondary educational level and above (P?=?.001) and being non-Saudi (P?=?.026) were identified as determinants of a high level of satisfaction. Ninety-five (31.8%) participants were classified as adherent to the therapy, and satisfaction with treatment was the only predictor of adherence (P?=?.009). One hundred thirty-six patients (45.6%) achieved their target INR range. Satisfaction (P?=?.038) and adherence (P?=?.023) were significantly associated with better INR control. Conclusion
Substantial efforts are needed to improve patient satisfaction and adherence to treatment through different strategies in order to achieve the target therapeutic goal for warfarin treatment. 相似文献10.

Background
Self-medication is a common practice among health sciences students in Saudi Arabia. It is known that inappropriate selfmedication may harm individuals due to increasing the risk of drug misuse or delaying a hospital visit by masking some symptoms. Thus, the aim of our study is to investigate and assess practices, awareness and attitudes toward analgesics self-medication among health science students in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Methods
This is a cross-sectional study in a form of electronic survey that was conducted among health sciences students from different universities in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 2016. Two hundred and seventy-two students responded to the questionnaire. The electronic questionnaire survey covered demographics, self-medication practice and the analgesics consumption, attitude and awareness about the safety of self-medication practice of analgesics. Results
Factors associated with high prevalence of self-medication were not significant except for age (P?=?0.04). Health sciences students had adequate knowledge about the safety of analgesics consumption itself and simultaneous use of analgesics with other drugs, significantly different by college; 80% for Pharmacy, 71% for Medicine, 61% for Nursing and Dentistry, and 25% for Applied Medical Sciences and pre-professional students (p?=?0.037).Conclusion
The occurrence of self-medication practices is distressingly high among health sciences students. It is necessary to educate the students about the side effects and drawbacks of irresponsible selfmedication. 相似文献11.
Background
The World Health Organization (WHO) has made the problem of solving antibiotic resistance one of its priorities. The present study was designed to determine knowledge and attitude towards antibiotic use in Alkharj, Saudi Arabia.Materials and methods
A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Alkharj, Saudi Arabia in the period of July 2017 to October 2017. A self-administered questionnaire included question on demographic characteristics, antibiotic usage, knowledge and attitude towards antibiotics use. The data were analyzed using Statistical Package For the Social Science (SPSS).Results
A total of 405 questionnaires were randomly distributed to the general public in Al-Kharj, Saudi Arabia. However, only 387 of the participants completed the questionnaire making the response rate 95.5%. The majority of the participants (64.3%) know antibiotics effective against bacterial infections while (46.8%) of participants believed that antibiotics can be used to treat viral infections. A significant positive correlation was noted between the respondents’ antibiotic knowledge score and their attitude score (r?=?0.523, p?=?0.000). Significantly higher mean knowledge score of antibiotics was observed among study participants who were married, employed, participants working in health sector, high educational and high monthly income groups. Mean attitude score was found to be significantly high for females, participants working in health sector, high educational and high monthly income groups. Conclusion
The participants who have good knowledge towards antibiotics use showed positive attitude towards antibiotics use. Some specific groups should to be targeted for educational intervention in terms of appropriate antibiotic use, such as those who have received a low level of education and are in receipt of a low monthly income. 相似文献12.

Background
Patients with uncontrolled type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) are at a high risk for Ramadan fasting and are exempt from fasting; however, most still insist on fasting. The aim of this study was to examine glucose level fluctuations in those patients during Ramadan fasting using a real-time continuous glucose monitoring system (RT-CGMS).Methods
This pilot study involved adult patients with uncontrolled T1DM (HbA1c?>?7%) who insisted on fasting during Ramadan in 2014 from Maternity and Children’s Hospital, Medina, Saudi Arabia. A Medtronic RT-CGMS was used to monitor the participants’ glucose levels for 3 consecutive days during fasting. Results
The study included 22 patients (mean age 22?±?6?years, duration of diabetes 10.9?±?7.2?years, HbA1c level 9.3?±?1.2). All participants were using the basal-bolus insulin regimen, except for one patient who was on an insulin pump. Sensor glucose (SG) profiles typically followed a pattern that was characterized by an exaggerated increase after iftar, which was sustained overnight, and a second rapid rise after suhoor, with a prolonged glucose decay over the daylight hours. The average SG was 199?±?104.1?mg/dl, which was lower during fasting 188.4?±?103.41?mg/dl than during the eating hours 212.5?±?103.51?mg/dl (P?=?0.00). There was a higher rate of hyperglycemia (48%) than hypoglycemia (10%).Conclusions
Patients with uncontrolled T1DM who fasted during Ramadan experienced a wide fluctuation of glucose levels between fasting and eating hours, exhibiting a greater tendency toward hyperglycemia. The long-term effects for this finding are not known and warrant further investigation. 相似文献13.

Background
Herbal medicine has been widely utilized by pregnant women despite the limited available evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of that practice. The current available studies, from different countries, estimated that the use of herbal medicine during pregnancy range from 7% up to 96%. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence, attitude, source of information, and reasoning behind the use of herbal medicine among pregnant women in Saudia Arabia. Methods
A cross-sectional study conducted using a convenience sample including pregnant women who visited the obstetric clinics at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A survey was administered in order to evaluate the prevalence and perception toward herbal medicine use among pregnant women in Saudi Arabia. Results
A total of 297 pregnant women completed the survey. The results showed that 56% of the respondents have used some type of herbal medicine during their pregnancy. Olive oil was utilized in 26% of the respondents followed by cumin 20% and garlic 15%. In addition, 37% of the respondents used herbal medicine by their own initiative, while 33% and 12% used herbal medicine based on recommendations from their families and friends, respectively. Furthermore, 19% of the respondents reported a positive attitude toward herbal medicine use during pregnancy. In addition, the percentage of women with positive attitude was marginally higher among respondents with lower educational level. Conclusion
The prevalence of using herbal medicine is considerably high among pregnant women in Saudi Arabia. Unfortunately, the majority of the users relied on informal sources to use herbal medicine during pregnancy. 相似文献14.

Objectives
To Describe the Saudi older adult (SOA) characteristics and Introduce the Saudi National Survey for Elderly Health (SNSEH).Methods
The SNSEH, a population-based nationally-representative survey, was used. Subjects were included in 2006–2007, using random-cluster sampling utilizing probability proportional to size approach, and followed-up to determine their vital status until June 2015. In the analyses, survey weights were incorporated. Parametric, non-parametric and logistic regression were used. Cox-proportional hazard regression was used to determine gender effects on mortality. Results
We included 2,946 SOA. The mean age was 70.1(SD?=?0.3). Around, 70% were illiterate. Almost 50% had monthly income of 2500 (2007-Saudi-Riyals). The most reported diseases were hypertension, diabetes and joints pain. The most reported medications were over the counter, antidiabetics and antihypertensive. The nine-years age-adjusted death hazard was 42% higher in SOA males. Conclusion
This is an introductory paper for a series of papers that describe SOA health. These efforts will help in guiding the development of a national healthcare model for SOA, evidence-based health policies and public intervention programs that address SOA health-related issues. 相似文献15.

Background
Diabetes is increasingly becoming a major health problem in Jordan and glycemic goals are often not achieved. Objective
To explore the patients’ perspectives regarding type 2 diabetes and its management in order to “fine-tune” future pharmaceutical care intervention programs.Method
Focus groups method was used to explore views from individuals with type 2 diabetes attending outpatient diabetes clinic at the Royal Medical Services Hospital. All interviews were recorded, transcribed and analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. Results
A total of 6 focus groups, with 6 participants in each one, were conducted. Participants in the present study demonstrated a great information needs about diabetes and the prescribed treatment. Medication regimen characteristics including rout of administration, number of prescribed medications and dosage frequency in addition to perceived side effects represented the major barriers to medication adherence. In addition to demonstrating negative beliefs about the illness and the prescribed medications, participants showed negative attitudes and low self-efficacy to adhere to necessary self-care activities including diet, physical activity and self-monitoring of blood glucose. Conclusion
Future pharmaceutical care interventions designed to improve patients’ adherence and health outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes should consider improving patients’ understanding of type 2 diabetes and its management, simplifying dosage regimen, improving patient's beliefs and attitudes toward type 2 diabetes, prescribed medications and different self-care activities in addition to improving patient's self efficacy to perform different treatment recommendations. 相似文献18.

Background
Coronary heart disease (CAD) is a multiple with several contributory risk traits, including type 2 diabetes and hypertension, which may share common genetic risk variants with the disease. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have yielded a wealth of information suggesting that CAD, the extent of contributory variants may differ according to genetic locus. The present study aimed at verifying whether the cyclin-dependent kinase 4 inhibitor B (CDKN2B) genomic region strongly associated with coronary artery disease (CAD)/myocardial infarction (MI) may also constitute risk for its risk factors type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and hypertension (HTN) in ethnic Saudi Arabs.Methodology
We genotyped eight CDKN2B SNPs for cardiovascular risk in a total of 4650 Saudi Arabs, (3049 male and 1601 female) by Taqman assay. Of these individuals, 3732 had primary hypertension and 2576 had type 2 diabetes mellitus. Results
Out of the eight studied SNPs, two, rs10757274_A [0.915 (0.840–1.00); p?=?0.042], rs1333045_T [0.92(0.84–1.00); p?=?0.048] were initially associated with type 2 diabetes but lost the association after multivariate adjustments for CAD, hypertension and MI, while rs10757274_A showed borderline association with hypertension. Conclusions
Our finding does not support the notion of a critical role for the CDKN2B gene locus as a HTN or T2DM cardiovascular risk in ethnic Arabs. The study also demonstrates the importance of replication studies in ascertaining the role of a genomic sequence in disease. 相似文献19.
