The aim of this concept analysis is to define women's body image in the context of mental health and to describe its antecedents and consequences. The analysis is grounded in a selective review delimited to literature about women's self-perceived body image. The psychological, social, and spiritual effects of a negative body image will be explored. Implications for mental health clinicians and researchers will be presented.

Emotional and psychological abuse are components of what are now more commonly accepted as aspects of domestic violence in addition to physical assault. Narcissistic abuse formulations of domestic violence are lesser known concepts and not recognised in UK health care in general, nor commonly in UK mental health services and by default mental health nursing. The effects on the individual who has experienced narcissistic abuse can be fatal or extremely debilitating, long lasting and individual recovery can be a complex process. This article will argue that the language and formulation of narcissistic abuse should be at the forefront of the multidisciplinary teams’, and in particular mental health nurses’ knowledge in order that victims can be directly supported or signposted to support to enable timely interventions and in-depth understanding.

Osteoporosis is a major public health problem as evidenced by the fact that it affects more than four million American women. It is a critical factor in virtually all of the 700,000 disabling hip fractures that occur yearly and it costs the economy almost $1 billion annually (Hodgson, 1982). The purpose of this article is to identify the major causes of osteoporosis and to present nursing interventions which diminish the devastating effects of this disease.

Emotional intelligence (EI) is necessary for the development of interpersonal and professional competence in nurses. We argue that the concept of emotional intelligence has particular relevance for mental health nursing leadership. In this critique, we examine the recent empirical evidence (2010–2014) related to emotional intelligence, in general, and nursing, specifically. Correlations between emotional intelligence and better overall health, increased work satisfaction, higher spiritual well-being, and decreased risk of job burnout are noted. We offer suggestions for mental health nurse leaders in developing successful project management teams and improving retention of current leaders. We also provide suggestions for future research.

The mental health of older adults contributes to their overall well-being. However, numerous studies have reported substantial prevalence of mental health problems, especially depression, in nursing home residents. Due to the poor quality of education and training provided to nursing home front-line caregivers, most of whom are nursing assistants, many residents experiencing depression are not recognized as such and consequently receive no treatment. Emphasizing the aging process and mental health components in education and training programs for nursing assistants could have a positive impact on the detection and treatment of depression in residents.

Cultures of performativity may contribute to organizational and individual arrogance. Workplace organizations have individuals who at various times will display arrogance, which may manifest in behaviours, such as an exaggerated sense of self-importance, dismissiveness of others, condescending behaviors and an impatient manner. Arrogance is not a flattering label and irrespective of the reason or the position of power, in the context of organizational behaviors, may not be useful and may even be detrimental to the work environment. Thus, it is timely to reflect on the implications of arrogance in the workplace. Advocacy and empowerment can be undermined and relationships adversely impacted, including the achievement of positive consumer outcomes. This paper provides an introduction to arrogance, and then discusses arrogance to promote awareness of the potential consequences of arrogance and its constituent behaviors.
