Firefighters receive significant training and are outfitted with state-of-the-art protective equipment. However, given the unpredictable nature of their work environment, injuries still occur. The National Burn Repository (NBR) was viewed as a resource for defining the epidemiology of these injuries on a national level and to identify predictive factors for outcomes in this population. The NBR was queried for the occupation of "firefighter" for the years 1990-2008. Records were screened for completeness, and 597 patients were identified for analysis. Data examined included demographics, %TBSA burn, length of stay (LOS), injury circumstance, and disposition. Multiple linear regression models were created to determine factors related to outcome measures. The majority of patients were white (84%) and male (96%). The mean age was 35 years. Most injuries were caused by fire/flame (73%). Only six deaths (1%) were reported. Most injuries were work-related (86%), and most patients were discharged home (92%). Inhalation injury was documented in 9% of patients. The mean LOS was 6.5 ± 11.3 days (median 2 days), and few patients had critical care requirements. The average %TBSA was 6 ± 11.7%. Patients with larger injuries had increased LOS. The presence of inhalation injury, elevated carboxyhemoglobin levels, and advancing age were significantly associated with larger burns. From the NBR data, most firefighter burn injuries were small, and few firefighter burn patients required critical care resources or had significant disability. Firefighters comprise a small number of burn center admissions each year, yet they are an important population to consider for burn prevention efforts.  相似文献

We sought to identify factors associated with the prognosis and survival of burn patients by analyzing data related to the prehospital treatment of burn patients transferred directly to the burn unit from the accident site. We also aimed to assess the role of prehospital physicians and paramedics providing care to major burn patients. This study included adult burn patients with severe burns treated between 2006 and 2010. Prehospital patient records and clinical data collected during treatment were analyzed, and the Injury Severity Scale (ISS) was calculated. Patients were grouped into two cohorts based on the presence or absence of a physician during the prehospital phase. Data were analyzed with reference to survival by multivariable regression model. Specific inclusion criteria resulted in a sample of 67 patients. The groups were comparable with regard to age, gender, and injury etiology. Patients treated by prehospital physicians (group 1, n = 49) were more severely injured than patients treated by paramedics (group 2, n = 18) in terms of total burn surface area (%TBSA) (32% vs. 17%, p = 0.033), ISS (25 vs. 8, p < 0.000), and inhalation injuries (51% vs. 16%, p = 0.013), and presented with a higher pulse rate, lower systolic blood pressure, and lower median pH. Age, gender, %TBSA, and ISS were significantly associated with survival in both groups. Survival at 30 days was associated with age, gender, the amount of intravenous fluids (in liters) received during the first 24 hours, and the final %TBSA. Variables found to be independently associated by multivariable regression model with 30 day mortality were age, female gender, and final TBSA. We identified prehospital prognostic factors affecting patient outcomes. Based on the results from this study, our current EMS system is capable of identifying seriously injured burn patients who may benefit from physician attendance at the injury scene.  相似文献

This retrospective review describes differences in social and demographic factors of women and men hospitalized for acute burns. These differences are examined using the framework of social capital to assess burn injury outcomes. Our TRACS-ABA registry was used to identify adult women admitted for the treatment of acute burns from 1998 to 2002. Each woman was matched by age (+/-5 years), %TBSA (+/-5%), and inhalation injury to a man hospitalized during the same period. Patient medical records were reviewed for sociodemographic data, burn etiology, hospital course, and discharge information. One hundred forty-five adult women hospitalized for burn injury during the study period were successfully matched by age, burn size, and inhalation injury to 145 men. The mean age of study patients was 46.4 +/- 18 years. The mean %TBSA burned was 13.0 +/- 18, and 15.5% had inhalation injury. There were no sex-related differences in any clinical outcomes evaluated. A surprising finding was that women were admitted to the hospital significantly later than men after injury (3.7 vs 1.2 days; P < .05). Days from admit to injury negatively correlated with %TBSA in women, but not in men. Women also differed from men in a number of sociodemographic factors. Social and demographic differences exist between men and women admitted for treatment of acute burn injury. These differences influence admission after burn injury. Additional efforts are needed to better measure and evaluate the role of social capital in burn injury epidemiology, management, and outcomes.  相似文献

The homeless are at an increased risk for traumatic injury, but little is known about the injury etiology and outcome of homeless persons who sustain burn injuries. In this study, we analyze patient and injury characteristics of homeless persons admitted to a regional burn center. This is a retrospective cohort study of patients admitted to our burn center between 1994 and 2005. A total of 3700 adult patients were admitted during the study period and, of these, 72 (1.9%) were homeless. The cohort of homeless patients was compared with domiciled adult patients admitted during the same time period, analyzing baseline patient and injury characteristics and injury outcomes. Overall, homeless patients had more extensive burn injuries than domiciled patients (17.8% vs 11.2%TBSA, P < .001) and overall longer lengths of hospital stay (22 vs 12 days, P < .001). The homeless population also had significantly higher rates of alcohol (80.6% vs 12.8%, P < .001) and drug abuse (59.4% vs 12.8%, P < .001), history of mental illness (45.2% vs 11.0%, P < .001), and injury by assault (13.9% vs 2.0%, P < .001). Homeless patients tended to have more severe injuries; higher rates of substance abuse and mental illness; increased incidence of assault by burning; and longer lengths of hospital stay. Hospitalization of a homeless patient following injury may provide a unique opportunity to address co-occurring substance abuse and mental illness and approach injury prevention to improve patients' outcomes and reduce injury recidivism.  相似文献

This study reviewed the use of an inpatient rehabilitation unit for burn survivors. We hypothesized that adult burn patients admitted earlier to inpatient rehabilitation have an equal or better functional outcome than those remaining in acute burn center for rehabilitation care. Functional Independence Measure (FIM) data were prospectively collected on our burn center admissions dating January 2002 to August 2003. National rehabilitation data were acquired from eRehabData and burn literature. A total of 217 adult patients survived until hospital discharge, with 21 (9.7%) discharged to inpatient rehabilitation (REHAB). REHAB had larger burn injuries, more inhalation injuries, higher incidence hand/foot burns, and longer length of stay (LOS). REHAB had lower FIM upon rehabilitation facility admission than national averages but greater FIM improvement during comparable rehabilitation LOS. Although our earlier rehabilitation admission strategy results in more frequent rehabilitation unit referrals, patients had shorter burn center LOS and greater FIM improvement compared with limited national burn patient functional outcome data currently available.  相似文献

Electrical injuries are uncommon, comprising 10% of our regional burn center admissions during a 9-year period. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence, type, and location of occupation-related electrical injuries in an attempt to focus our injury prevention and outreach efforts. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with electrical injuries admitted to our burn center from January 1992 through March 2000, with focused analysis on those patients admitted with occupation-related electrical injuries. Of the 95 patients admitted for electrical burns, 81% (n = 77) were occupational injuries. This rate of injury suggests that prevention efforts should be directed at work sites and partnerships should be developed between burn centers and businesses to reduce the incidence of injuries.  相似文献

One hundred fifty-nine consecutive patients with high-voltage burns were retrospectively reviewed to determine the ocular sequelae of these injuries. Five patients had ophthalmic changes (two had recurrent iritis, eight had cataracts, two had macular holes, and one had central retinal artery occlusion). All four patients with cataractous changes had characteristic anterior subcapsular opacifications, except for one patient who presented with a dense white opacified lens. All had bilateral lenticular changes in which the denser cataract developed earlier than the contact wound and ipsilateral to it. Central retinal artery occlusion has not been previously reported as a complication of electrical burns. Macular holes, formerly believed to be rare in these injuries, were found in two of the five patients. Ocular complications from electrical burn injuries are uncommon. Although a number of these ocular changes occur immediately after injury, many of the visually impairing changes develop days and even years after a severe electrical burn injury; thus, careful follow-up is mandated.  相似文献

In Turkey, burns represent a relatively small number of injuries overall, but they continue to be a major public health problem. Our aim in this study was to identify risk factors that affect outcome in burn patients hospitalized in the southern part of our country, with special emphasis on electrical burns. The database for 109 burn patients who were admitted to our burn center from April, 2000, through August, 2001, was retrospectively analyzed. Electrical injury was the cause of burn in 23 (21%) of the 109 cases. The burn causes differed among age groups and between the sexes, with males constituting 95% of the electrical burn patients. The mortality rate for the electrical burn group was lower than the rate for the rest of the burn patients (1/23 vs 17/86, respectively; P <.001); however, the opposite was true for complication rate (10/23 vs 5/86, respectively; P <.001), cost of treatment (8351 US dollars vs 5122 US dollars, respectively; P =.009), and length of hospital stay (39.9 vs 26.2 days, respectively; P < 0.001). The rate of electrical burn injury in Turkey has changed very little in the past two decades. This underlines the need for stronger efforts aimed at prevention, such as better public education and strict regulations regarding the distribution and use of electricity.  相似文献

Inhalation injuries occur in approximately one third of all major burns and account for a significant number of deaths in burn patients each year. Previous studies have examined ventilator-associated pneumonia in patients with inhalation injury, but no study to date has evaluated the incidence of bacterial contamination of the airways on admission in patients with inhalation injuries. Because pulmonary complications have been found to cause or directly contribute to mortality in as high as 77% of patients, with combined inhalation injury and thermal injury, early detection of community-acquired pneumonia may significantly alter treatment outcomes. The authors conducted a retrospective review of all burn patients with early intubation and inhalation injury admitted between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2006 who underwent bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) within 24 hours of admission. Seventy-four consecutive patients fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Age, sex, percentage of total body surface area (%TBSA), presence of alcohol, site of intubation, grade of injury, and BAL results were examined. Analysis revealed a patient population that was 67.6% male, with a 42.0 +/- 17.1-year-old mean age, 27.0 +/- 24.7 %TBSA average burn, 1.6 +/- 1.2 inhalation grade, 17.8 +/- 24.4 ventilator days requirement, 27.3 +/- 31.4 days of length of stay, and 21.6% mortality. BAL results were grouped into four categories: 1) No growth, 2) Normal flora, 3) <100,000 colony-forming units (cfu), and 4) >100,000 cfu. By this criteria, 13 patients (17.6%) had no growth, 22 (29.7%) had normal flora, 27 (36.5%) had <100,000 cfu, and 12 (16.2%) had >100,000 cfu on the initial BAL. Therefore, 53% grew pathogenic organisms and 16% had >100,000 cfu on BAL with initial bronchoscopy. The predominant organisms were gram-positive cocci, with Streptococcus viridans found in 15 patients (20%), Staphylococcus aureus in eight (11%), and Streptococcus pneumonia in four (6%). Analysis of the patients with the highest bacterial loads revealed that they were 75% female and had a trend toward an increased ventilator requirement and longer length of stay. Patients with combined thermal and inhalation injury requiring urgent intubation have a high incidence of bacterial bronchial contamination. Inhalation injury creates a damaged tracheobronchial mucosa and early intubation provides a portal for bacterial contamination. Further studies with a larger patient population and randomization to treatment and nontreatment of the BAL culture results may show statistically significant differences in ventilator days, length of stay, and mortality.  相似文献

Microalbuminuria is a known finding in inflammatory states. We hypothesized that urinary albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR) would correlate with injury severity and resuscitation demands after acute burns. This pilot study evaluated 30 adults admitted within 12 hours of injury with burns > or =10% total body surface area burn injury (TBSA). The urinary ACR was calculated for each patient at 7 to 12 hours, 19 to 24 hours, and 43 to 48 hours following burn injury. Microalbuminuria was defined as a urinary ACR > or =20 mg/g. Study patients (23 males, 7 females) had a mean age of 42.9 + 14.0 years and a median TBSA burn injury of 18.8%. Inhalation injury was present in 10 of the study patients, and all patients with inhalation injury had microalbuminuria at the time of admission. One study patient died. Median time from burn injury to resuscitation was 30 hours, and the median fluid requirement was 4.2 ml/kg/%TBSA. Microalbuminuria was not uniformly present in burn-injured patients during the first 48 hours after injury. ACR values early in the hospital course correlated with higher lactate concentrations early after burn injury. However, ACR correlated with neither injury severity nor resuscitation demands after burn injury during any studied time range. Microalbuminuria does not have apparent clinical utility in burn-injured patients, and other markers of injury severity and resuscitation demands should be sought.  相似文献

The spectrum of cement-related injuries encompasses contact dermatitis, abrasions, ulcerations, chemical burns, and burns from explosions during the manufacturing process. The purpose of this study was to compile cement-related conditions seen in two burn units (1999-2005), literature case reports and series (1950-2006) and the (1989-2001) National Burn Repository (NBR). There were 3597 admissions in two Midwestern burn units, of which 12 cases (0.8%) were cement burns. They occurred in men, aged 15 to 64 years with a burn range of 0.25 to 10% TBSA, exposure time of 1 to 6 hours, treatment delay of 1 day to 2 weeks, hospitalization (2-14 days). Literature review of 109 cases indicated that cement-related injuries were predominantly seen in men, aged 26 to 45 years; with a cement-exposure time of 1.5 to 4 hours, treatment delay (1 day to 5 weeks), hospitalization (10-33 days), and healing time (2-7 weeks). There were 52,219 burn admissions in the NBR, of which 44 (0.08%) were cement-related burns; 95% were men with a mean age of 41 years, 6% TBSA cement burn and an 8-day hospital stay. The demographic characteristics of the burn units and NBR cases were similar to those in the literature. This preventable injury occurred primarily in the working age male patient and was associated with long healing times. Public awareness and enhanced manufacturer package warnings and education may decrease future cement-related injuries.  相似文献

Pediatric upper extremity burns are common. Though current American Burn Association guidelines recommend burn unit referral for burns involving the hands or major joints, many minor injuries are treated in the emergency department (ED) or outpatient setting. Despite the large number of burn patients managed by primary care providers, no large studies have been performed to assess effectiveness. A retrospective 5-year review of the epidemiology and outcomes associated with pediatric upper extremity burns treated at an urban ED was performed. Two hundred sixty-nine patients were identified. The mechanism of burn, percentage of total body surface area (%TBSA) affected, plastic surgery consultations (for wound management recommendations and additional treatment), complications, and surgical interventions were examined. Mechanisms of burn included direct contact (47%), scald (29%), flame (12%), electrical (10%), and friction or chemical (1.5%). Fifty percent of patients suffered from burns over less than 1% TBSA; close to 95% had burns on less than 5% TBSA. Seventy-five percent of patients had second-degree burns, 21% had first-degree burns, and 2% had third-degree burns. Forty patients (15%) had a plastic surgery consult. Seven patients (3%) required skin grafting. Complications occurred in five (2%) patients and included two cases of hypertrophic scarring; two patients with flexor contractures, one case of compartment syndrome requiring fasciotomy, and one late infection. These results suggest that although significant burns are usually cared for in specialized burn centers, the majority of childhood burns to the upper extremity are relatively minor and often treated in the primary care setting. Most patients had small areas of injury and healed without complications. Contact burns are an ever-increasing proportion of childhood burns and should be seemingly preventable. Education to parents and primary care physicians should be reemphasized. It appears that minor upper extremity burns treated by our urban ED staff are handled appropriately and result in favorable outcomes.  相似文献

One of the leading causes of scald burn injury in children is from hot soup, particularly prepackaged instant soups. The purpose of this study was to determine the demographic, socioeconomic, and situational factors that contribute to the incidence of scald burns in children. A 20-item questionnaire was given to the caregiver of children who were treated for scald burn injury at a pediatric burn center from July 2006 to March 2007. Questions included demographics (child age, gender, siblings, ethnicity), socioeconomic status (income, education), factors contributing to the injury (type of soup, child supervision, type of container), and location of injury. The mean age of the 78 children sustaining burn injury and completing the survey was 4.8 +/- 0.6 years. The majority of patients were girls (51%), and the most frequently involved ethnic group was Hispanic (44%). Households had a mean of 3.0 +/- 0.3 children in residence, and an income of less than $29,000/year (59%). The highest educational level achieved was high school for 73% of the parents. Prepackaged soup (65%) with a narrow base heated directly in the original container (46%) using the microwave (51%) was implicated in the majority of burns. Soup scald burns, especially from prepackaged instant soups, appear to predominate in lower income families with multiple children. The majority of injuries occur when the caregiver heats the soup in the original container using the microwave. Prevention of these types of injuries will require a two-pronged approach: educating families with multiple children and changing the soup packaging.  相似文献

To evaluate the risk factors for nosocomial infection (NI) and mortality in a university hospital, 10-year data of burn patients were assessed retrospectively. The study was conducted at Erciyes University's Burn Center during 2000 and 2009. The records of 1190 patients were obtained. Overall, 131 (11%) patients had 206 NIs with an incidence density of 14.7 infections/1000 patient days. Burn wound infection (n = 109, 53%) was the most common NI. High (%TBSA burned) and late excision were found to be the most significant risk factors for the development of NI. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most frequent causative microorganism. However, the prevalence of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii has increased in recent years with a prevalence of 47% in 2009. The carbapenem resistance of P. aeruginosa has decreased in recent years, whereas that of A. baumannii increased and it had a prevalence of 94% in the last year. Conversely, the most important risk factors for mortality were advanced age, high %TBSA and having an underlying disease. Prevention of NI is an important issue in burn units to reduce mortality rates. Early excision and wound closure are important therapeutic approaches for the prevention of burn wound infection.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to determine the relationship among lipid concentrations, cytokine concentrations, and clinical outcomes of burn patients. Twenty-eight patients admitted within 24 hours of burn injury, segregated based on burn size, had blood samples drawn 24 and 48 hours after burn injury and then weekly for 3 weeks. Measurements included total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride, interleukin (IL)-6, soluble IL-2 receptor, and soluble necrosis factor p55 and p75 receptors. Infection, length of stay (LOS), and survival were monitored. Cholesterol and lipoprotein concentrations decreased by at least 40% in patients with burns >20% total body surface area and inversely correlated with IL-6. Lower cholesterol and higher IL-6 values correlated with higher infection rates and longer LOS. IL-6 was the strongest predictor for LOS. In conclusion, outcomes after burn injury are related to low cholesterol and elevated IL-6 levels.  相似文献

Fungal infections are increasingly common in burn patients. We performed this study to determine the incidence and outcomes of fungal cultures in acutely burned patients. Members of the American Burn Association's Multicenter Trials Group were asked to review patients admitted during 2002-2003 who developed one or more cultures positive for fungal organisms. Data on demographics, site(s), species and number of cultures, and presence of risk factors for fungal infections were collected. Patients were categorized as untreated (including prophylactic topical antifungals therapy), nonsystemic treatment (nonprophylactic topical antifungal therapy, surgery, removal of foreign bodies), or systemic treatment (enteral or parenteral therapy). Fifteen institutions reviewed 6918 patients, of whom 435 (6.3%) had positive fungal cultures. These patients had mean age of 33.2 +/- 23.6 years, burn size of 34.8 +/- 22.7%TBSA, and 38% had inhalation injuries. Organisms included Candida species (371 patients; 85%), yeast non-Candida (93 patients, 21%), Aspergillus (60 patients, 14%), other mold (39 patients, 9.0%), and others (6 patients, 1.4%). Systemically treated patients were older, had larger burns, more inhalation injuries, more risk factors, a higher incidence of multiple positive cultures, and significantly increased mortality (21.2%), compared with nonsystemic (mortality 5.0%) or untreated patients (mortality 7.8%). In multivariate analysis, increasing age and burn size, number of culture sites, and cultures positive for Aspergillus or other mold correlated with mortality. Positive fungal cultures occur frequently in patients with large burns. The low mortality for untreated patients suggests that appropriate clinical judgment was used in most treatment decisions. Nonetheless, indications for treatment of fungal isolates in burn patients remain unclear, and should be developed.  相似文献

Elderly burn patients suffer from greater morbidity and mortality than younger patients with similar burn extents. The purpose of this study was to identify risk factors for burn injuries in the elderly to develop an effective preventive program. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 20 elderly (> or =65 years of age) burn survivors on the circumstances surrounding their burn injury and on burn prevention. A control group of 20 nonburned elderly completed a similar survey only on burn prevention. The majority of burned subjects believed that their injury was preventable (85%). The home was the commonest location for burn injury (70%), and scalds (50%) and flame burns (25%) were the most common etiologies. Most subjects felt that a burn prevention program would be useful (95%) and television, news, and posters were the preferred sources of prevention information. Compared with the burn group, the control group had more risk factors for burn injury. However, the control group also took more active preventive measures. Burn prevention campaigns for elderly should focus on reducing flame and scald burns that occur in the home, preferably using television, news, and poster media.  相似文献

In 1997 a prospective study to identify pressure ulcer development and identify risk factors was conducted on 217 consecutive patients in the burn center. Weekly rounds were conducted, and the specifics of pressure ulcer development, demographics, concurrent injuries, comorbid conditions, risk factors, and patient outcomes were identified. An incidence of 4.1% was identified, with the most common locations being the sacrum, occipital area, and heel. All patients with pressure ulcers met criteria for a major burn injury. The patients had concurrent injuries or an infectious process, had more surgical procedures, and were older than the group that did not develop pressure ulcers. A lower Braden Scale for risk assessment and a later onset of ulceration was noted in this population compared with previous studies of nonburn patients. The results of this study have led to changes in our burn clinical pathways that target preventive strategies in high-risk patients.  相似文献

The inherent danger of illegal manufacture of methamphetamine is explosion and fire with the "cookers" presenting to burn centers for treatment. Recent studies have shown that methamphetamine burn patients required resuscitation volumes two to three times that of the standard Parkland formula and experienced a higher mortality rate. The purpose of this study was to compare the fluid resuscitation requirements and other characteristics of our methamphetamine-positive burn patients with a control group of methamphetamine-negative burn patients. A retrospective study of burn patients with methamphetamine-positive urine toxicology screens was conducted from August 1996 to April 2005. The data collected were age, sex, %total body surface area (%TBSA) burn, urine toxicology screen result, length of stay (LOS), ventilator days, weight, urine output, and fluid requirement during the first 24 hours along with fluid type, survival, and hospital charges. Methamphetamine-positive patients were matched to controls for %TBSA, age, and sex. Eleven methamphetamine-positive burn patients were well matched with 11 methamphetamine-negative controls. There was no difference in intubation rate, ventilator days, LOS, and there were no deaths in either group. There was no statistical difference between the two groups for the ratio of the 24-hour fluid resuscitation requirement divided by the estimate from the Parkland formula. Hospital charges were similar for the two groups. The largest volume of fluid infused was lactated Ringers (LR) and the slightly hypertonic fluid combination of LR + 50 mEq sodium bicarbonate + 3.4 mmol potassium phosphate. Both groups also received a dextran-40 (Rheomacrodex) infusion. In contrast to previous studies, our experience with methamphetamine-positive burn patients shows that they did not have an increased initial fluid requirement, a longer LOS, more days on the ventilator, higher hospitalization charges nor an increased mortality rate. The only apparent difference between our study and others is in the method of resuscitation. The slightly hypertonic fluid combination of LR + 50 mEq sodium bicarbonate +3.4 mM potassium phosphate was used for resuscitation along with Rheomacrodex. Prospective trials should be conducted on this fluid resuscitation strategy to determine wider applicability for all large burn patients.  相似文献

Low voltage electrical injury is associated with minor or no cutaneous burns and its symptoms rarely appear on initial examination. The purpose of this study was to determine the ability to return to work among patients with low voltage electrical injury. A retrospective hospital chart review was conducted among patients with low voltage electrical injury admitted to the outpatient burn clinic of a rehabilitation hospital between January 1, 2002 and March 21, 2006. Symptoms at follow-up visits and return to work status were compared between patients with electrical contact injuries and those with electrical flash injuries using Student's t-test and chi analysis with a P < 0.05 considered significant. Values are presented as mean +/- SD. Forty patients were treated for low voltage electrical injury, and all injuries occurred at work. There were 34 men (85%) and 6 women (15%) with a mean age of 37.3 +/- 11.2 years and a mean total body surface area burned of 13.0% +/- 17.6%. Most patients had neurological (92.5%), psychological (90.0%), and musculoskeletal (72.5%) symptoms, which were documented on average 303.7 days after injury. Twenty-five (62.5%) patients had electrical contact injury and 15 (37.5%) patients had electrical flash injuries. Patients with electrical contact injuries were younger (34.2 +/- 9.9 years vs 42.4 +/- 11.6 years, P = 0.030), complained of more psychological symptoms (25 vs 11, P = 0.006), more neurological symptoms (25 vs 12, P = 0.020), and more fatigue (10 vs 1, P = 0.022) than patients with electrical flash injuries. Twenty-three patients (57.5%, 14 electrical contact and 9 electrical flash) attempted to return to work on average 107.7 days after injury, but only 13 patients (32.5%, six electrical contact and seven electrical flash) successfully returned to work 59.38 days after injury. Of them 7 (53.8%) return to the same job, 5 (38.5%) returned to a modified job, and 1 (7.7%) to a new job. Low voltage electrical injury can significantly impact a patient's ability to return to work because of the psychological, neurological, and musculoskeletal symptoms, which are observed. Recognition of low voltage injury as a potentially permanent source of symptoms is important and has to date not been well established. More effective preventive measures should be implemented at work to reduce the risk of these injuries.  相似文献
