Mitomycin-C as adjuvant therapy in the treatment of sebaceous gland carcinoma in high-risk locations
Purpose: To report on the use of Mitomycin-C as adjuvant therapy to excision and cryotherapy in patients with sebaceous gland carcinoma (SGC) in high-risk locations.
Design: Retrospective, consecutive, case series.
Participants: Three patients with SGC of the upper palpebral conjunctiva or caruncle, but without clinical pagetoid spread.
Methods: Following excision and double freeze-thaw cryotherapy, patients with histology demonstrating SGC of the ocular surface were treated with topical Mitomycin-C (0.04%). Follow-up was conducted over an average of 30 months (range: 24–37 months).
Main outcome measures: Postoperative evidence of local recurrence, lymph node or distant organ metastasis.
Results: No patients had evidence of local recurrence or systemic disease.
Conclusions: Wide surgical excision with cryotherapy is the basis of treatment of SGC without pagetoid spread. The use of Mitomycin-C as adjuvant therapy remains controversial, although there is some rationale for its use in high-risk situations. 相似文献

Methods: The costs of the two forms of cataract surgery were assessed over a 12-month period. During this period 410 cataract operations were performed.
Setting: The cataract surgery was carried out in a dedicated day surgery unit in a teaching hospital.
Outcome measure: The direct, indirect and tangible costs were measured.
Results: Conventional extracapsular cataract surgery with posterior chamber lens implant costs $1000.85 and phacoemulsification with lens implantation costs $1231.00.
Conclusions: Although conventional extracapsular surgery generates slightly lower costs than phacoemulsification, the cost difference is small. In generating these figures, some assumptions must be made and the real difference may prove to be less than this. 相似文献

Background: This is the first report of cyclosporin-A ointment (CsA) adversely affecting epithelial herpes simplex virus keratitis in a corneal graft.
Methods: The details of this case were obtained from the patient's record at The Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute.
Results: Ceasing CsA ointment resulted in resolution of the epithelial HSV keratitis.
