This study examined the effects of menstrual cycle phase on ventilatory control. Fourteen eumenorrheic women were studied in the early follicular (FP; 1-6 days) and mid-luteal (LP; 20-24 days) phase of the menstrual cycle. Blood for the determination of arterial PCO(2) (PaCO(2)) , plasma strong ion difference ([SID]), progesterone ([P(4)]), and 17beta-estradiol ([E(2)]) concentrations were obtained at rest. Subjects performed a CO(2) rebreathing procedure that included prior hyperventilation and maintenance of iso-oxia to evaluate central and peripheral chemoreflex, and nonchemoreflex drives to breathe. Resting PaCO(2) and [SID] were lower; minute ventilation (V (E)), [P(4)] and [E(2)] were higher in the LP versus FP. Within the LP, significant correlations were observed for PaCO(2) with [P(4)], [E(2)] and [SID]. Menstrual cycle phase had no effect on the threshold or sensitivity of the central and/or peripheral ventilatory chemoreflex response to CO(2). Both (V (E)) and the ventilatory response to hypocapnia (representing nonchemoreflex drives to breathe) were approximately 1L/min greater in the LP versus FP accounting for the reduction in PaCO(2) . These data support the hypothesis that phasic menstrual cycle changes in PaCO(2) may be due, at least in part, to the stimulatory effects of [P(4)], [E(2)] and [SID] on ventilatory drive.  相似文献

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a noninvasive indicator of autonomic control. This study examines HRV changes across a normal menstrual cycle and proposes a novel piecewise function controlling for the effects of breathing on HRV spectral parameters. A resting ECG was collected from 13 women at five points in their menstrual cycle. Both heart rate and breathing rate increased across the cycle (p < .01) while time‐domain variability decreased (p = .04). Use of the piecewise function for breathing rate in HRV spectral analysis was confirmed by a substantial increase in model goodness‐of‐fit. HRV spectral parameters, controlled for breathing with the piecewise function, confirm that the decrease in variability is likely due to a parasympathetic withdrawal, since high frequency HRV decreases (p = .02).  相似文献

Summary Thermoregulatory responses were studied in seven women during two separate experimental protocols in the follicular (F, days 4–7) phase and during the luteal (L, days 19–22) phase of the menstrual cycle. Continuous measurements of esophageal temperature (T es), mean skin temperature ( ), oxygen uptake and forearm sweating ( ) were made during all experiments. Protocol I involved both passive heat exposure (3 h) and cycle exercise at ∼80% peak during which the environmental chamber was controlled atT a=50.0° C, rh=14% (P w=1.7 kPa). In protocol II subjects were tested during thirty-five minutes of exercise at ∼85% peak atT a=35° C and rh=25% (P w=1.4 kPa). The normal L increase in restingT es (≈0.3° C) occurred in all seven subjects. was higher during L than F in all experiments conducted at 50° C. During exercise and passive heat exposure, theT es threshold for sweating was higher in L, with no change in the thermosensitivity (slope) of toT es between menstrual cycle phases. This rightward or upward shift inT es threshold for initiation of sweating averaged 0.5° C for all experiments. The data indicate the luteal phase modulation in the control of sweating in healthy women is also apparent during severe exercise and/or heat stress.  相似文献

Sex differences in pain have been noted; women typically report more pain than men. Gonadal hormones may influence pain reports, and, moreover, such hormones may help to explain sex differences and menstrual cycle differences in pain. This study measured venipuncture and intravenous catherization pain during the follicular and luteal phases of the menstrual cycle in regularly menstruating women. Pain was also assessed in a group of men. Pain ratings were higher in women than men. In women, pain ratings did not differ between the follicular and luteal phases. Estradiol and progesterone increased from follicular to luteal phases. Within-phase analyses revealed that pain ratings were positively correlated with estradiol and progesterone during the luteal phase. Moreover, increases in estradiol and progesterone across the menstrual cycle were positively correlated with increases in pain. These findings suggest that variations in gonadal hormones during the menstrual cycle influence the experience of pain in healthy women.  相似文献

Fourteen adult female rhesus monkeys were observed for 1 complete menstrual cycle, five of them for 2 cycles. Changes in LH, FSH, estrogens and progesterone were monitored daily. Mean hormonal concentrations followed patterns previously demonstrated in primates, with a typical late follicular phase estrogen peak preceeding the ovulatory LH and FSH surges. Maximal sexual skin color intensity paralleled the midcycle increase in estrogens. The results indicate that food intake fluctuated with changes in hormonal secretion. A significant decrease in the amount of food consumed correlated well with the midcycle estrogen and gonadotropin surges. The amount of food consumed during the luteal phase was greater than that of the early follicular phase.  相似文献

The effects of menstrual cycle phase and hormones on women's visual ability to detect symmetry and visual preference for symmetry were examined. Participants completed tests of symmetry detection and preference for male facial symmetry at two of three menstrual cycle phases (menses, periovulatory, and luteal). Women were better at detecting facial symmetry during the menses than luteal phase of their cycle. A trend indicated the opposite pattern for dot symmetry detection. Similarly, change in salivary progesterone levels across the cycle was negatively related to change in facial symmetry detection scores. However, there was no clear evidence of a greater preference for facial symmetry at any cycle phase, despite an overall preference for facial symmetry across phases. These findings suggest a menses phase advantage and a low progesterone advantage in women's ability to detect facial symmetry. The results are discussed in the context of hormonal, evolutionary mate selection, and functional neurocognitive theories.  相似文献

Two hundred and two female rhesus monkeys were monitored for completion of meals and instances of food rejection during nonpregnant menstrual cycles and during pregnancy. Two prominent periods of increased food rejection were found. The first occurred midway through the menstrual cycle, around the expected time of ovulation. Incidence of food rejection during this periovulatory period was significantly greater than that observed during the early follicular or midluteal stages of the cycle. Food rejection also rose sharply during the third through the fifth weeks of pregnancy and then tapered off over the next month and a half. The feeding changes during early rhesus pregnancy are contrary to what has been described for rodents, but the pattern is consistent with the incidence of nausea and feeding changes reported for human pregnancies. The observations on rhesus females indicated a systematic relationship between levels of food intake and reproductive condition in primates. When feeding changes are compared to reports of endogenous estrogen and progesterone determinations, a positive correlation is noted between incidence of food rejection and levels of circulating estrogens.  相似文献

Objectives: To evaluate the effects of endogenous estrogens and progestins on the IGF-system during the normal menstrual cycle in healthy premenopausal women not using contraceptive drugs. Methods: Nine women had fasting blood samples obtained at 2–3 days intervals during a 5 week study period. Plasma levels of IGF-I, IGF-II, IGFBP-1, IGFBP-3, estradiol and progesterone were measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA) in each sample. IGFBP-3 was also evaluated by Western ligand blot (WLB) and immunoblot. Any differences between the menstrual phase (defined as day 1–5), follicular and luteal phases (separation based on plasma estradiol and progesterone values) were evaluated by the Friedman test. Results: A small but significant difference in plasma levels of IGF-I (P<0.01) and IGFBP-3 (P<0.05) measured by RIA between the three phases were seen with the highest levels found during the follicular phase. No change in plasma levels of IGFBP-1 and IGF-II was found and immunoblots did not reveal any alteration in the ratio of fragmented to intact IGFBP-3 during the menstrual cycle. A positive correlation between plasma levels of IGF-I and estradiol was seen in 8 out of 9 patients (P=0.012). Conclusions: The finding of a slight but significant higher level of plasma IGF-I in the follicular and luteal phases compared with the menstrual phase suggests plasma estradiol may influence the level of this growth factor. This hypothesis is further supported by the finding of a correlation between plasma levels of IGF-I and estradiol but not progesterone in individual patients at different times during the menstrual cycle.  相似文献

Seven healthy young women, 3 of whom had been taking oral contraceptives, were examined during the course of 2 menstrual cycles to assess their isometric strength, their endurance during a series of 5 fatiguing isometric contractions at a tension of 40% MVC, and their blood pressures and heart rates during those fatiguing contractions. Two sets of experiments were performed, one in which the subject's forearm temperature was allowed to vary as a function of T A , and one with the muscle temperature stabilized by immersion of the forearm in water at 37 C. During exposure to ambient temperatures, isometric strength and both the heart rate and blood pressure responses at rest and at the end of a fatiguing, sustained isometric exercise, were not significantly different during any phase of the menstrual cycle in any subject. In contrast, the isometric endurance in the women not taking oral contraceptives varied sinusoidally in all 5 contractions with a peak endurance midway through the ovulatory phase and the lowest endurance mid-way through the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. The isometric endurance of the women taking oral contraceptives did not vary during their menstrual cycle. After stabilization of the temperature of the muscles of the forearm in water at 37 C, the isometric endurance of the normal subjects showed a hyperbolic response with the maximal endurance at the beginning and end of their cycles, and the shortest endurance at mid-cycle. Here again, however, the isometric endurance of the women taking oral contraceptives did not vary after immersion of their forearms in the 37 C water.  相似文献

The relationship between change in hypoxic sensitivity in respiration, defined as increment in ventilation per drop of arterial O2 saturation , with the phase change from follicular to luteal and those in resting pulmonary ventilation , mean inspiratory flow (V T/T I), alveolar partial pressures of CO2 and O2 ( and , respectively) and body temperature was studied in 10 women. There was a significant relationship between % increase in hypoxic sensitivity and decrement of resting that occurred in the luteal phase. However, no significant relationships were observed between change in hypoxic sensitivity and those in the remaining parameters studied. The intersubject variation in % increase in resting during the luteal phase was not associated with that in % increase in hypoxic sensitivity. The results indicate that the contribution of increased hypoxic sensitivity to increasing during the luteal phase is variable among subjects. Reasons for the increase in hypoxic sensitivity with hypocapnia are discussed.  相似文献

Summary The whole body sweating response was measured at rest in eight women during the follicular (F) and the luteal (L) phases of the menstrual cycle. Subjects were exposed for 30-min to neutral (N) environmental conditions [ambient temperature (T a) 28°C] and then for 90-min to warm (W) environmental conditions (Ta, 35°C) in a direct calorimeter. At the end of the N exposure, tympanic temperature (T ty) was 0.18 (SEM 0.06)°C higher in the L than in the F phase (P<0.05), whereas mean skin temperature ( ) was unchanged. During W exposure, the time to the onset of sweating as well as the concomitant increase in body heat content were similar in both phases. At the onset of sweating, the tympanic threshold temperature (T ty, thresh) was higher in the L phase [37.18 (SEM 0.08)°C] than in the F phase [36.95 (SEM 0.07)°C;P<0.01]. The magnitude of the shift inT ty, thresh [0.23 (SEM 0.07)°C] was similar to the L-F difference inT ty observed at the end of the N exposure. The mean skin threshold temperature was not statistically different between the two phases. The slope of the relationship between sweating rate andT ty was similar in F and L. It was concluded that the internal set point temperature of resting women exposed to warm environmental conditions shifted to a higher value during the L phase compared to the F phase of the menstrual cycle; and that the magnitude of the shift corresponded to the difference in internal temperature observed in neutral environmental conditions between the two phases.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between endogen sex hormone levels and myocardial performance in two different phases of menstrual cycle. BACKGROUND: The relationships between cardiac performance and sex hormone levels in menstrual cycle have not yet been clearly identified. METHODS: Twenty-seven women at the age of 19-42 years (mean 24.11+/-6.02) with regular menstrual cycles (28-31 days) were enrolled in this study. Cardiac performance was evaluated by tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) derived myocardial performance index (MPI) in the menstrual and the luteal phases of the menstrual cycle. RESULTS: Left ventricular MPI were statistically significant between the menstrual phase and luteal phase of the menstrual cycle (Inferior 0.53+/-0.10 versus 0.44+/-0.09, P<0.001; Anterior 0.54+/-0.13 versus 0.45+/-0.10, P<0.008; Lateral 0.50+/-0.09 versus 0.44+/-0.12, P<0.03; Septum 0.54+/-0.07 versus 0.46+/-0.10, P<0.005; Global 0.52+/-0.06 versus 0.44+/-0.09, P<0.001). Right ventricle MPI between the two periods was also significantly different (0.49+/-0.10 versus 0.42+/-0.10, P<0.01). There was a moderate correlation between estrogen levels and global MPI (r=0.46, P=0.001), but no correlation was found between progesterone levels and global MPI (r=0.22, P=NS). CONCLUSION: We firstly demonstrated that endogen estrogen or progesterone improved the combined systolic and diastolic function in both left and right ventricle during luteal phases of menstrual cycle. Considering the previous studies and our results, estrogen may be responsible for this improvement.  相似文献

The effects of endogenous fluctuations in ovarian hormones during the female's menstrual cycle on heterosexual interaction was studied in groups of stumptail macaques. When 5 different trios of females were paired for 5 consecutive weeks with each of 5 males no aspect of male-female interaction changed as a function of phase of the menstrual cycle. Moreover, males usually preferred to copulate with the same female of each trio in consecutive tests, regardless of the ovarian condition of any of the females. It appeared that the most dominant females in the trios were sexually most preferred. Subcutaneous implantation of silastic capsules containing progesterone into the sexually most preferred females of each trio affected neither the males' sexual preference, nor the behavior of these females, nor the behavior of sexually non-preferred females in each trio. Likewise, progesterone in sexually preferred females had no effect on male-female interaction in pair tests. It is concluded that in stumptail macaques social factors are more important than ovarian hormones in regulating heterosexual interaction.  相似文献

This study investigated how trusting behavior varies in naturally cycling women, as a function of sex and attractiveness of players in a trust game, at three distinct phases of the menstrual cycle. Women acted more cautiously in an investment game at the preovulatory phase, compared to the menstrual and the mid-luteal phase. Reduced willingness to trust in strangers was particularly expressed toward male players at this time. The increase of estradiol levels from menses to the preovulatory phase was negatively correlated with trust in attractive male other players, whereas the increase of progesterone levels from menses to the mid-luteal phase was positively associated with trust in unattractive female other players. No particular contribution of a single hormone level could be identified for the generally reduced willingness to trust in strangers in the preovulatory phase. Thus, the results emphasize the impact of the menstrual cycle on interpersonal trust, although the exact mode of hormonal action needs to be further investigated.  相似文献

Summary This report describes a series of experiments testing the behavioral significance of orientation sensitive cells in the cat's visual cortex. Cats used for this purpose were raised with one eye (VE) viewing a field of vertical lines and the other eye (HE) viewing a field of horizontal lines. This experience simplified their cortical physiology, and is thus called environmental surgery. Cells with elongated fields were found to be activated monocularly: those driven by the VE had vertically oriented receptive fields, while those activated by the HE had horizontally oriented fields. These animals were tested, using one eye at a time, on a series of visual discriminations: a) flux discrimination, b) tests for selective response to vertical and horizontal lines, c) discrimination between two lines differing only in orientation, d) discrimination between mirror image stimuli, and e) evaluation of inter-ocular transfer on these discriminations. The threshold tests for orientation discrimination gave the clearest results: there were small but consistent differences in performance between the VE and HE which depended on the orientation of the lines being discriminated. There was also evidence that the animals responded to different parts of a stimulus with the VE and HE. As a group, the experimental cats showed less interocular transfer of visual discriminations than the normal controls. However, surprisingly, there was also evidence for much functional equivalence between the two eyes. Possible explanations for this are considered and it is suggested that an animal's ability to make pattern discriminations is not rigidly determined by the shape and orientation of its receptive fields.  相似文献

Summary Thermoregulatory responses to exercise in relation to the phase of the menstrual cycle were studied in ten women taking oral contraceptives (P) and in ten women not taking oral contraceptives (NP). Each subject was tested for maximal aerobic capacity ( ) and for 50% exercise in the follicular (F) and luteal (L) phases of the menstrual cycle. Since the oral contraceptives would have prevented ovulation a quasi-follicular phase (q-F) and a quasi-luteal phase (q-L) of the menstrual cycle were assumed for P subjects. Exercise was performed on a cycle ergometer at an ambient temperature of 24° C and relative air humidity of 50%. Rectal (T re), mean skin ( ), mean body ( ) temperatures and heart rate (f c) were measured. Sweat rate was estimated by the continuous measurement of relative humidity of air in a ventilated capsule placed on the chest, converted to absolute pressure (PH2Ochest). Gain for sweating was calculated as a ratio of increase inPH2Ochest to the appropriate increase inT re for the whole period of sweating (G) and for unsteady-state (Gu) separately. The did not differ either between the groups of subjects or between the phases of the menstrual cycle. In P, rectal temperature threshold for sweating (T re, td) was 37.85° C in q-L and 37.60° C in q-F (P < 0.01) and corresponded to a significant difference fromT re at rest. TheT re, andf c increased similarly during exercise in q-F and q-L. No menstrual phase-related differences were observed either in the dynamics of sweating or in G. In NP,T re, td was shorter in L than in F (37.70 vs 37.47° C,P<0.02) with a significantly greater value fromT re at rest. The dynamics and G for sweating were also greater in L than in F. The Gu was 36.8 versus 16.6 kPa · ° C–1 (P<0.01) while G was 6.4 versus 3.8 kPa · ° C–1 (P<0.05), respectively. TheT re, andf c increased significantly more in phase F than in phase L. It was concluded that in these women performing moderate exercise, there was a greater temperature threshold and larger gains for sweating in phase L than in phase F. Intake of oral contraceptives reduced the differences in the gains for sweating making the thermoregulatory responses to exercise more uniform.  相似文献

This study examined the association of menstrual cycle phase with stress reactivity as well as the hormonal and neuroendocrine mechanisms contributing to cycle effects. Fifty‐seven women underwent a modified Trier Social Stress Test during the early follicular, late follicular, and luteal phases of the menstrual cycle. Greater increases in cardiac index (CI) and greater decreases in vascular resistance index (VRI) during speech were observed in the luteal phase relative to other phases, while greater increases in epinephrine (EPI) was observed during the late follicular and luteal phases compared to the early follicular phase. Luteal phase estradiol predicted luteal EPI reactivity but not CI or VRI reactivity, while luteal phase EPI reactivity predicted luteal phase CI and VRI reactivity. Thus, cycle‐related changes in EPI reactivity may be a stronger determinant of cycle effects on hemodynamic reactivity than sex hormones per se.  相似文献

Summary Behavioral experiments show that the visual system of cat contains mechanisms which are selective for direction of stimulus movement. The cat's contrast detection threshold for a drifting grating is unaffected by the addition of a grating moving in the opposite direction; this same pattern of results is found for human observers. The convergence of cat and human psychophysical data suggests that man's brain may hold direction-specific neurons, similar to those known to exist in the cat brain. This research was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation  相似文献
