Background

Different limb training demands and limb preference may determine anthropometric and muscle force inter-limb asymmetries in Rhythmic Gymnastics (RG) athletes.

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of lateral preference of the lower extremity on anthropometric, range of motion, and isokinetic torque measurements of RG athletes.

Methods

Lower limb anthropometric measurements (girth, estimated anatomical cross-sectional area), hip, knee and ankle range of motion, flexor and extensor isokinetic torques (angular velocities = 60, 180, e 240 °·s−1) and bilateral asymmetry index were evaluated in 11 international level Rhythmic Gymnastics athletes (17.9 ± 4.0 years of age; 9.1 ± 5,1 years of experience; 26.8 ± 6.0 weekly training hours).

Results

The preferred limb showed larger thigh girth and anatomical cross-sectional area, higher ankle dorsiflexor range of motion, higher hip flexor torque at 60 °·s−1 and higher plantarflexor torque at 180 °·s−1 compared to the non-preferred limb.

Conclusions

The observed differences seem to be strictly related to lateral preference and rhythmic gymnastics training.

Purpose/Background

Strength asymmetries are related to knee injuries and such injuries are frequently observed among runners. The purpose of this study was to examine whether long‐distance runners have symmetric performance during knee isokinetic testing at two angular velocities.

Methods

Twenty‐three healthy and well‐trained male long‐distance runners performed open‐chain isokinetic trials for assessment of concentric quadriceps and hamstrings contractions at velocities of 60 °·s‐1 and 240 °·s‐1. Data were compared between the lower limbs at different velocities.

Results

Peak torque and total work were similar between the limbs. Asymmetry was observed for knee flexor power at 240 °·s‐1 (237 ± 45 W and 205 ± 53 W, in the preferred and non‐preferred limb, respectively). Asymmetry indexes for flexor power were different between the velocities tested (13.1% and 2.21% for 240 °·s‐1 and 60 °·s‐1, respectively).

Conclusion

A limb asymmetry was observed among runners for knee flexor power, mainly at higher angular velocities (240 °·s‐1). In addition, H/Q ratios were observed to be contraction velocity dependent.

Objectives

The aim of this study was to assess the mean platelet volume (MPV), an indicator of platelet activation in patients with infective endocarditis.

Subjects and Methods

Twenty-nine patients with infective endocarditis and 29 healthy subjects were studied. Plasma MPV values in patients and control subjects were measured on admission and after 2 weeks of specific treatment of infective endocarditis.

Results

The MPV was significantly higher among patients with infective endocarditis when compared with the control group (9.86 ± 1.1 vs. 8.0 ± 1.0 fl, respectively; p < 0.01). The MPV values of patients with infective endocarditis decreased significantly after treatment from 9.86 ± 1.1 to 7.86 ± 1.0 fl (p < 0.01). Total platelet counts increased significantly after treatment from 193.4 ± 96.5 × 109 to 243.7 ± 92.4 × 109 (p = 0.04).

Conclusion

MPV values were higher in patients with infective endocarditis and decreased significantly after treatment. Elevated MPV values indicate that patients with infective endocarditis have increased platelet activation and infective endocarditis treatment decreases this platelet activation by decreasing MPV.Key Words: Mean platelet volume, Infective endocarditis, Thrombus, Vegetation  相似文献

Background

In patients with severe aortic stenosis, left ventricular hypertrophy is associated with increased myocardial stiffness and dysfunction linked to cardiac morbidity and mortality. We aimed at systematically investigating the degree of left ventricular mass regression and changes in left ventricular function six months after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) by cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR).

Methods

Left ventricular mass indexed to body surface area (LVMi), end diastolic volume indexed to body surface area (LVEDVi), left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and stroke volume (SV) were investigated by CMR before and six months after TAVI in patients with severe aortic stenosis and contraindications for surgical aortic valve replacement.

Results

Twenty-sevent patients had paired CMR at baseline and at 6-month follow-up (N=27), with a mean age of 80.7±5.2 years. LVMi decreased from 84.5±25.2 g/m2 at baseline to 69.4±18.4 g/m2 at six months follow-up (P<0.001). LVEDVi (87.2±30.1 ml /m2vs 86.4±22.3 ml/m2; P=0.84), LVEF (61.5±14.5% vs 65.1±7.2%, P=0.08) and SV (89.2±22 ml vs 94.7±26.5 ml; P=0.25) did not change significantly.

Conclusions

Based on CMR, significant left ventricular reverse remodeling occurs six months after TAVI.  相似文献

Background

Kinesiology tape has been advocated as a means of improving muscle flexibility, a potential modifiable risk factor for injury, over time. The epidemiology and etiology of hamstring injuries in sport have been well documented.

Purpose

To compare the temporal pattern of efficacy of kinesiology tape and traditional stretching techniques on hamstring extensibility over a five day period.

Study Design

Controlled laboratory study.

Methods

Thirty recreationally active male participants (Mean ± SD: age 20.0 ± 1.55 years; height 179.3 ± 4.94 cm; mass 76.9 ± 7.57 kg) completed an active knee extension assessment (of the dominant leg) as a measure of hamstring extensibility. Three experimental interventions were applied in randomized order: Kinesiology tape (KT), static stretch (SS), proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF). Measures were taken at baseline, +1min, + 30mins, + 3days and +5days days after each intervention. The temporal pattern of change in active knee extension was modelled as a range of regression polynomials for each intervention, quantified as the regression coefficient.

Results

Hamstring ROM with KT application at +3days was significantly greater than baseline (129.18 ± 15.46%, p = 0.01), SS (106.99 ± 9.84%, p = 0.03) and PNF (107.42 ± 136.13%, p = 0.03) interventions. The temporal pattern of changes in ROM for SS and PNF were best modelled by a negative linear function, although the strength of the correlation was weak in each case. In contrast, the KT data was optimised using a quadratic polynomial function (r2 = 0.60), which yielded an optimum time of 2.76 days, eliciting a predicted ROM of 129.6% relative to baseline.

Conclusion

Each intervention displayed a unique temporal pattern of changes in active knee extension. SS was best suited to immediate improvements, and PNF to +30 minutes in hamstring extensibility, whereas kinesiology tape offered advantages over a longer duration, peaking at 2.76 days. These findings have implications for the choice of intervention, timing and duration to assist clinicians in both a sporting and clinical context.

Background

Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) repair and pulmonary valvotomy for pulmonary stenosis (PS) lead to progressive pulmonary insufficiency (PI), right ventricular enlargement and dysfunction. This study assessed whether pulmonary regurgitant fraction measured by cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) could be reduced with inhaled nitric oxide (iNO).

Methods

Patients with at least moderate PI by echocardiography undergoing clinically indicated CMR were prospectively enrolled. Patients with residual hemodynamic lesions were excluded. Ventricular volume and blood flow sequences were obtained at baseline and during administration of 40 ppm iNO.

Results

Sixteen patients (11 with repaired TOF and 5 with repaired PS) completed the protocol with adequate data for analysis. The median age [range] was 35 [19–46] years, BMI was 26 ± 5 kg/m2 (mean ± SD), 50% were women and 75% were in NYHA class I. Right ventricular end diastolic volume index for the cohort was 157 ± 33 mL/m2, end systolic volume index was 93 ± 20 mL/m2 and right ventricular ejection fraction was 40 ± 6%. Baseline pulmonary regurgitant volume was 45 ± 25 mL/beat and regurgitant fraction was 35 ± 16%. During administration of iNO, regurgitant volume was reduced by an average of 6 ± 9% (p=0.01) and regurgitant fraction was reduced by an average of 5 ± 8% (p=0.02). No significant changes were observed in ventricular indices for either the left or right ventricle.

Conclusion

iNO was successfully administered during CMR acquisition and appears to reduce regurgitant fraction in patients with at least moderate PI suggesting a potential role for selective pulmonary vasodilator therapy in these patients.

Background:

Physical exercise may modify biologic stress responses.

Objective:

To investigate the impact of exercise training on vascular alterations induced by acute stress, focusing on nitric oxide and cyclooxygenase pathways.

Method:

Wistar rats were separated into: sedentary, trained (60-min swimming, 5 days/week during 8 weeks, carrying a 5% body-weight load), stressed (2 h-immobilization), and trained/stressed. Response curves for noradrenaline, in the absence and presence of L-NAME or indomethacin, were obtained in intact and denuded aortas (n=7-10).

Results:

None of the procedures altered the denuded aorta reactivity. Intact aortas from stressed, trained, and trained/stressed rats showed similar reduction in noradrenaline maximal responses (sedentary 3.54±0.15, stressed 2.80±0.10*, trained 2.82±0.11*, trained/stressed 2.97± 0.21*, *P<0.05 relate to sedentary). Endothelium removal and L-NAME abolished this hyporeactivity in all experimental groups, except in trained/stressed rats that showed a partial aorta reactivity recovery in L-NAME presence (L-NAME: sedentary 5.23±0,26#, stressed 5.55±0.38#, trained 5.28±0.30#, trained/stressed 4.42±0.41, #P<0.05 related to trained/stressed). Indomethacin determined a decrease in sensitivity (EC50) in intact aortas of trained rats without abolishing the aortal hyporeactivity in trained, stressed, and trained/stressed rats.

Conclusions:

Exercise-induced vascular adaptive response involved an increase in endothelial vasodilator prostaglandins and nitric oxide. Stress-induced vascular adaptive response involved an increase in endothelial nitric oxide. Beside the involvement of the endothelial nitric oxide pathway, the vascular response of trained/stressed rats involved an additional mechanism yet to be elucidated. These findings advance on the understanding of the vascular processes after exercise and stress alone and in combination.  相似文献

Introduction

Early initiation of appropriate antimicrobial treatment is a cornerstone in managing pneumonia. Because microbiologic processing may not be available around the clock, optimal storage of specimens is essential for accurate microbiologic identification of pathogenetic bacteria. The aim of our study was to determine the accuracy of two commonly used storage approaches for delayed processing of bronchoalveolar lavage in critically ill patients with suspected pneumonia.

Methods

This study included 132 patients with clinically suspected pneumonia at two medical intensive care units of a tertiary care hospital. Bronchoalveolar lavage samples were obtained and divided into three aliquots: one was used for immediate culture, and two, for delayed culture (DC) after storage for 24 hours at 4°C (DC4) and -80°C (DC-80), respectively.

Results

Of 259 bronchoalveolar lavage samples, 84 (32.4%) were positive after immediate culture with 115 relevant culture counts (≥104 colony-forming units/ml). Reduced (<104 colony-forming units/ml) or no growth of four and 57 of these isolates was observed in DC4 and DC-80, respectively. The difference between mean bias of immediate culture and DC4 (-0.035; limits of agreement, -0.977 to 0.906) and immediate culture and DC-80 (-1.832; limits of agreement, -4.914 to 1.267) was -1.788 ± 1.682 (P < 0.0001). Sensitivity and negative predictive value were 96.5% and 97.8% for DC4 and 50.4% and 75.4% for DC-80, respectively; the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.0001).

Conclusions

Bronchoalveolar lavage samples can be processed for culture when stored up to 24 hours at 4°C without loss of diagnostic accuracy. Delayed culturing after storage at -80°C may not be reliable, in particular with regard to Gram-negative bacteria.  相似文献

Introduction

Although computed tomography (CT) is widely used to investigate different pathologies, quantitative data from normal populations are scarce. Reference values may be useful to estimate the anatomical or physiological changes induced by various diseases.

Methods

We analyzed 100 helical CT scans taken for clinical purposes and referred as nonpathological by the radiologist. Profiles were manually outlined on each CT scan slice and each voxel was classified according to its gas/tissue ratio. For regional analysis, the lungs were divided into 10 sterno-vertebral levels.

Results

We studied 53 males and 47 females (age 64 ± 13 years); males had a greater total lung volume, lung gas volume and lung tissue. Noninflated tissue averaged 7 ± 4% of the total lung weight, poorly inflated tissue averaged 18 ± 3%, normally inflated tissue averaged 65 ± 8% and overinflated tissue averaged 11 ± 7%. We found a significant correlation between lung weight and subject''s height (P <0.0001, r2 = 0.49); the total lung capacity in a supine position was 4,066 ± 1,190 ml, ~1,800 ml less than the predicted total lung capacity in a sitting position. Superimposed pressure averaged 2.6 ± 0.5 cmH2O.

Conclusion

Subjects without lung disease present significant amounts of poorly inflated and overinflated tissue. Normal lung weight can be predicted from patient''s height with reasonable confidence.  相似文献

Background

Gender-specific differences in cardiovascular risk are well known, and current evidence supports an existing role of endothelium in these differences. The purpose of this study was to assess non invasively coronary endothelial function in male and female young volunteers by myocardial blood flow (MBF) measurement using coronary sinus (CS) flow quantification by velocity encoded cine cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) at rest and during cold pressor test (CPT).

Methods

Twenty-four healthy volunteers (12 men, 12 women) underwent CMR in a 3 Tesla MR imager. Coronary sinus flow was measured at rest and during CPT using non breath-hold velocity encoded phase contrast cine-CMR. Myocardial function and morphology were acquired using a cine steady-state free precession sequence.

Results

At baseline, mean MBF was 0.63 ± 0.23 mL·g-1·min-1 in men and 0.79 ± 0.21 mL·g-1·min-1 in women. During CPT, the rate pressure product in men significantly increased by 49 ± 36% (p < 0.0001) and in women by 52 ± 22% (p < 0.0001). MBF increased significantly in both men and women by 0.22 ± 0.19 mL·g-1·min-1 (p = 0.0022) and by 0.73 ± 0.43 mL·g-1·min-1 (p = 0.0001), respectively. The increase in MBF was significantly higher in women than in men (p = 0.0012).

Conclusion

CMR coronary sinus flow quantification for measuring myocardial blood flow revealed a higher response of MBF to CPT in women than in men. This finding may reflect gender differences in endothelial-dependent vasodilatation in these young subjects. This non invasive rest/stress protocol may become helpful to study endothelial function in normal physiology and in physiopathology.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the effectiveness of monetary reinforcement to increase the frequency of self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG).

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS

Ten adolescents with poorly controlled diabetes enrolled in a 12-week program in which they earned monetary reinforcers based on SMBG frequency ($0.10 per test, with bonuses for ≥4 tests per day, and $251.40 maximum).

RESULTS

SMBG increased from 1.8 ± 1.0 to 4.9 ± 1.0 tests per day (P < 0.001) with 90% completing four or more tests per day. Mean A1C fell from 9.3 ± 0.9% to 8.4 ± 1.5% (P = 0.05). Adolescents and parents reported high satisfaction with procedures.

CONCLUSIONS

Reinforcing adolescents for SMBG may increase testing and improve A1C.  相似文献

Background:

Squats and lunges are commonly prescribed rehabilitation exercises used to improve performance across a wide spectrum of patient populations. However, biomechanical studies have mainly examined young, normal weight populations performing these exercises at a difficulty level potentially too challenging for obese individuals. Understanding how obesity and different levels of difficulty affect lower extremity biomechanics could help to inform rehabilitation approaches used for obese individuals.

Purpose:

The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the lower extremity kinematics and kinetics in obese and normal weight females during performance of progressively more difficult squat and lunge exercises.

Study Design:

Cross‐sectional study design

Methods:

Ten obese females (mean age, 37.4 years; BMI 39.2 ± 3.7 kg/m2) and ten normal‐weight, age‐matched female controls (38.1 years, BMI < 23 kg/m2) volunteered for the study. Each group performed two exercises, each in three different iterations: squatting at three standardized knee angles (60°, 70°, and 80°) and lunging at three standardized distances (1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 times tibial length). Three dimensional motion analysis using infrared markers and force plates was used to calculate range of motion as well as hip, knee, ankle and support moments (normalized for body weight). A repeated measures ANOVA model was used to determine between and within group differences.

Results:

Support moments were higher in obese females for squat 70° (p=0.03) and 80° (p=0.01). Ankle extensor moments were higher in obese females for squat 80° (p=0.04). During lunge at all levels (1.0, 1.1, and 1.2), hip extensor moments were higher in obese subjects (p=0.004, 0.003, and 0.007 respectively). Within group, the support moments were significantly higher during squat 80° than squat 60° (p=0.01) in obese females. A non‐linear relationship was found between hip moments and BMI during squat 60°, 70°, and 80°.

Conclusion:

During two commonly prescribed rehabilitation exercises (squat and lunge), there were significantly greater support moments in obese individuals compared to normal controls. The non‐linear associations between kinetic and anthropometric measures make the assessment of how best to approach exercise in obese individuals challenging.

OBJECTIVE:

To compare thoracic musculoskeletal static alterations in adolescents born prematurely with those born at term and investigate neonatal and post-neonatal variables associated with thoracic alterations.

METHOD:

This is a cross-sectional study with 57 adolescents aged 10-15 years born prematurely and 57 adolescents born at term paired by gender and age. Photographs of the head and thorax in the front, back, and right side views were studied using a computer program. The two groups were compared in regards to: elevation of clavicles, elevation of shoulders, protrusion of the head, and anteroposterior and mediolateral thoracic length. Factor associated with thoracic disorders were evaluated by linear regression analysis.

RESULTS:

The Preterm group had mean gestational age of 32.0±2.8 weeks and the birth weight was 1462±338 and 3342±430 g for the Preterm and Term adolescents, respectively. Preterm adolescents had higher elevation of the left shoulder (22.7±5.4o vs. 20.6±5.3o;sim, p=0.038) and the right shoulder (22.2±4.4o vs. 18.5±5.7o; p<0.001). Smaller protrusion of the head (27.8±6.1o vs. 32.4±7.9o; p=0.008), mediolateral thoracic length (22.9±2.3 cm vs. 25.1±3.1 cm; p<0.001) and anteroposterior thoracic length (19.7±2.2 cm vs. 21.1±3.4 cm; p<0.001) were found in preterm adolescents. By multiple regression analysis, factors associated with higher shoulder elevation were birth weight <1500 g (p<0.001) and mechanical ventilation during neonatal period >5 days (p=0.009).

CONCLUSION:

Adolescents born prematurely presented greater thoracic musculoskeletal static alterations compared to those born at term. Factors associated with these alterations were: very low birth weight and longer duration of mechanical ventilation in the neonatal unit.  相似文献

Objective

To evaluate the acute effects of insulin on airway reactivity and the protective effects of beclomethasone and ipratropium against insulin-induced airway hyperresponsiveness on isolated tracheal smooth muscle in a guinea pig model.

Materials and Methods

The trachea of each guinea pig was excised; one end of the tracheal strip was attached to the hook of the oxygen tube of a tissue bath and the other end was connected to a research-grade isometric force displacement transducer. The effects of varying concentrations of insulin (10−7 to 10−3M) and insulin pretreated with a fixed concentration of beclomethasone (10−6M) and ipratropium (10−6M) on the isolated tracheal tissue were studied by constructing cumulative concentration-response curves. Changes in tracheal smooth muscle contractions were recorded on a 4-channel oscillograph.

Results

The means ± standard error of the mean of the maximum amplitude of contraction with increasing concentrations of insulin and of insulin pretreated with fixed concentrations of beclomethasone and ipratropium were 35 ± 1.13, 22 ± 1.15 and 27.8 ± 1.27 mm, respectively.

Conclusion

The data showed that beclomethasone inhibited the contractile response of insulin to a greater extent than ipratropium. Thus we suggest that inhalational insulin pretreated with beclomethasone may be more efficacious than with ipratropium for the amelioration of potential respiratory adverse effects such as bronchoconstriction.Key Words: Airway hyper-reactivity, Inhaled insulin, Beclomethasone, Ipratropium, Tracheal muscle  相似文献

Background

An inadequate level of flexibility of the adductor muscles is one of the most critical risk factors for chronic groin pain and strains. However, measurement methods of adductor muscle flexibility are not well defined.

Purpose

To determine the inter‐session reliability of the biarticular and monoarticular adductor muscle flexibility measures obtained from passive hip abduction with the knee flexed over the edge of the plinth test (PHA) and the passive hip abduction test at 90° of hip flexion (PHA90°).

Study design

Clinical Measurement Reliability study.

Methods

Fifty healthy recreational athletes participated in this study. All participants performed the PHA and PHA90° on four different occasions, with a two‐week interval between testing sessions. Reliability was examined through the change in the mean between consecutive pairs of testing sessions (ChM), standard error of measurement expressed in absolute values (SEM) and as a percentage of the mean score (%SEM), minimal detectable change at 95% confidence interval (MDC95), and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC2,k).

Results

The findings showed negligible or trivial ChM values for the two adductor flexibility measures analyzed (<2°). Furthermore, the SEM and MDC95 were 2.1° and 5.9° and 2.2° and 6.2° for the measures obtained from the PHA and PHA90°, respectively, with %SEM scores lower than 5% and ICC scores higher than 0.90.

Conclusion

The findings from this study suggest that the adductor muscle flexibility measures analyzed have good to excellent inter‐session reliability in recreational athletes. Thus, clinicians can be 95% confident that an observed change between two measures larger than 5.9° and 6.2° for the flexibility measures obtained from the PHA and PHA90°, respectively, would indicate a real change in muscle flexibility.

BACKGROUND:

Accidental falls are a major health problem related to aging and affect one in every three elderly individuals over the age of sixty.

OBJECTIVE:

To evaluate and compare the muscle strength, gait kinematics parameters, and performance in functional tests between elderly subjects with and without a prior history of falls. In addition, the association between the history of falls and the variables that demonstrated differences between groups were tested.

METHOD:

62 elderly subjects participated in the study and were allocated to the group with falls history (FG; n=20; 68.0±6.9 years old) or the group without falls history (CG; n=42; 65.5±4.1 years old). Maximal strength, gait kinematics parameters, and functional tests were tested.

RESULTS:

The FG showed lower muscle strength in the knee flexors (51.45±8.6 vs. 62.09±19 Kg), lower average toe clearance during the swing phase (0.04±0.006 vs. 0.043 ± 0.005 m), and lower performance in the "8-foot up-and-go" test (5.3±0.7 vs. 5.8±0.7 s) (p<0.05). There were no associations between any variables and falls, but the increased time in the "8-foot up-and-go" test may double the likelihood of a fall occurring.

CONCLUSION:

Fallers have reduced lower limb strength, gait alterations, the worst performance in the dynamic balance test, and an increased risk of falls.  相似文献

Background

Reduced respiratory muscle endurance (RME) contributes to increased dyspnea upon exertion in patients with cardiovascular disease.

Objective

The objective was to characterize ventilatory and metabolic responses during RME tests in post-myocardial infarction patients without respiratory muscle weakness.

Method

Twenty-nine subjects were allocated into three groups: recent myocardial infarction group (RG, n=9), less-recent myocardial infarction group (LRG, n=10), and control group (CG, n=10). They underwent two RME tests (incremental and constant pressure) with ventilatory and metabolic analyses. One-way ANOVA and repeated measures one-way ANOVA, both with Tukey post-hoc, were used between groups and within subjects, respectively.

Results

Patients from the RG and LRG presented lower metabolic equivalent and ventilatory efficiency than the CG on the second (50± 06, 50± 5 vs. 42± 4) and third part (50± 11, 51± 10 vs. 43± 3) of the constant pressure RME test and lower metabolic equivalent during the incremental pressure RME test. Additionally, at the peak of the incremental RME test, RG patients had lower oxygen uptake than the CG.

Conclusions

Post-myocardial infarction patients present lower ventilatory efficiency during respiratory muscle endurance tests, which appears to explain their inferior performance in these tests even in the presence of lower pressure overload and lower metabolic equivalent.  相似文献

Objective

To evaluate the effect of luminous intensity on contrast vision under different ocular conditions.

Materials and Methods

Ninety eyes of 45 persons were included in this study as follows: 30 healthy eyes, 30 eyes with cataract simulation (using translucent glasses), and 30 myopic eyes. Contrast sensitivity was examined using 5 spatial frequencies (1.5, 3.0, 6.0, 12.0, and 18.0 cycles per degree) of sine wave contrast test optotypes for 4 light intensities (34, 68, 154, and 240 cd/m2).

Results

The mean linear contrast sensitivities averaged over the frequencies for each of the 4 light intensities were: healthy eyes: 59 ± 11, 72 ± 16, 79 ± 23, and 80 ± 19; myopic eyes: 52 ± 13, 67 ± 15, 73 ± 21, and 75 ± 18, and cataract simulation eyes: 15 ± 7, 21 ± 8.6, 28.7 ± 13, and 28.6 ± 13, respectively. The linear contrast sensitivities averaged over the light intensities for each of the 5 spatial frequencies were: healthy eyes: 78, 87, 117, 59, and 21; myopic eyes: 65, 84, 109, 54, and 29, and cataract simulation eyes: 37, 41, 28, 8, and 2.

Conclusions

The light intensity level had a positive effect on the contrast sensitivity of the examined eyes, except for eyes with cataract simulation, where even the maximum light intensity did not improve the contrast vision. This indicates that patients with cataracts require increased contrast of text rather than brighter illumination to improve the quality of their vision.Key Words: Contrast vision, Cataract, Myopia, Luminosity  相似文献

Objective

To assess exercise heart rate recovery (HRR) indices in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) for an assessment of their cardiac autonomic function.

Subjects and Methods

Thirty-five patients with diffuse or limited SSc and 35 healthy controls were enrolled. All subjects underwent exercise testing and transthoracic echocardiography. The HRR indices were calculated by subtracting the first- (HRR1), second- (HRR2) and third-minute (HRR3) heart rates from the maximal heart rate.

Results

The SSc and control groups were similar in age (45.2 ± 11.6 vs. 43.9 ± 10.0 years), had identical gender ratios (31 female/4 male in both groups) and similar left ventricular ejection fraction (66.5 ± 5.1 vs. 67.7 ± 5.9%). The mean HRR1 (21.8 ± 4.4 vs. 27.7 ± 4.3 bpm, p = 0.001), HRR2 (43.8 ± 6.3 vs. 47.6 ± 4.4 bpm, p = 0.004) and HRR3 (58.8 ± 10.3 vs. 63.6 ± 7.3 bpm, p = 0.031) values were significantly lower in the SSc group than in the healthy controls. HRR indices were similar in the limited and diffuse SSc subgroups.

Conclusions

The patients with SSc had lower HRR indices than normal subjects. Cardiac autonomic functions might be involved in SSc, even in patients without cardiac symptoms.Key Words: Cardiac autonomic dysfunction, Heart rate recovery, Scleroderma  相似文献
