The centerpiece of this article is an exemplar of an elderly woman who makes a startling revelation to a clinical nurse specialist who is making a consultative home visit related to a physical condition. The exemplar illustrates the uniquely powerful contribution of the nurse work of intentionality, presencing, mutuality, knowing, and caring in helping patients to heal. Newman's theory of Health as Expanding Consciousness provides the framework for a paradigm shift from a curative to a healing practice of nursing. 相似文献

In the 1990's communication becomes an ophthalmic practice issue. The present ophthalmic climate of cost containment, downsizing, budget cuts, and lack of appreciation of contributions, results in a low staff morale.Recognition of the effects of job satisfaction and productivity led one group to seek solutions. A communication task force was formed to identify problems and the appropriate interventions. 相似文献

Mind the theory/practice gap in nursing 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The theory/practice gap is a recurrent theme in the nursing literature. Numerous suggestions have been made about how this gap may be narrowed or even closed. However, there appears to have been little attempt to date to examine the ways in which research conducted into the hidden curriculum, and philosophical analysis of the concepts involved, might inform our understanding of the reasons for the existence of the theory/practice gap. This paper attempts to utilize some of the contributions from these areas of research, and as a result will argue that, while narrowing of the theory/practice gap may be a realistic goal, any attempt to close it completely will be doomed to failure. 相似文献

This discussion paper sets out some major concerns with the introduction of critical paths into the Australian health care system. It is argued that in their current form as devised in North America, critical paths may not be appropriate to our organisation of health care and may in fact be detrimental to the development of nursing practice. The discussion centres around the socio-political context of the development of managed care in North America, as well as research findings from the implementation of critical paths in an Australian hospital. 相似文献

The goal of holistic nursing is to enhance healing of the whole person from birth to death. The new American Holistic Nursing Association's (AHNAs) Standards of Holistic Nursing Practice defines the ways to accomplish this goal, describing the scope of holistic nursing practice and the level of care expected from a holistic nurse. Nurses can reduce the devastating effects of crisis and illness in individuals by using the AHNA standards of practice. As nurses integrate interdiciplinarity into their work and think at the intersections, the human story enfolds in a new way, and health moves into the domain of healing. 相似文献

Believing that the purpose of knowledge development and practice is compassionate action, in this article, we discuss how pragmatism can help us move toward that goal. Specifically, we show how pragmatic inquiry draws attention to the inseparability of practice/theory and the integral role practice experiences play in the ongoing development of theory. We demonstrate the utility of pragmatism to nursing by describing how we have explicitly approached theory development as a practical (and practice) activity of inquiry to attend to experiences of culture and diversity in family nursing. 相似文献
