BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to examine the importance of the somatometric components of elite male and female volleyball players in relation to their different game roles and levels of performance. METHODS: Two hundred and thirty-four male athletes (aged 24.7+/-4.4 years) and 244 female athletes (aged 23.1+/-4.4 years) from the Italian A1 and A2 volleyball leagues underwent anthropometric measurements during the 1992-1993 and 1993-1994 seasons. Somatotypes were estimated with the Heath-Carter method. RESULTS: Marked sexual dimorphism in somatotype was observed in the total sample. The average somatotype for men was 2.2-4.2-3.2 (SD 0.7-0.9-0.9), and for women it was 3.0-3.3-2.9 (SD 0.8-1.0-0.9). The somatotype was significantly different in players at different levels of performance (A1 vs A2 leagues), as it follows: 2.1-4.1-3.3 (SD 0.6-0.8-0.7) vs 2.3-4.3-3.0 (SD 0.7-1.0-0.8) in males; 2.9-3.1-3.0 (SD 0.8-1.0-0.9) vs 3.1-3.5-2.7 (SD 0.8-0.9-0.8) in females. The somatotype was also significantly different in players in different roles. In male sex the mean somatotypes for setters were 2.4-4.5-2.8 (SD 0.7-0.9-0.8), for centres they were 2.0-4.0-3.5 (SD 0.6-1.0-0.8), for spikers they were 2.2-4.3-3.0 (SD 0.6-0.9-0.7), for opposites they were 2.2-4.3-3.1 (SD 0.6-0.9-0.8). In female sex the mean somatotypes for setters were 3.1-3.6-2.5 (SD 0.8-1.0-1.0), for centres they were 2.8-3.1-3.1 (SD 0.8-0.9-0.7), for spikers they were 3.0-3.5-2.8 (SD 0.9-1.0-0.9) and for opposites they were 3.0-3.2-3.0 (SD 0.7-0.9-0.8). CONCLUSIONS: The physique of athletes in the A1 league is characterized by higher ectomorphy and lower endomorphy and mesomorphy. There is also a slight tendency of male players to a greater homogeneity in somatotype within the group at the maximum level of performance. Moreover somatotype differs in relation to game role in volleyball players of both sexes: the mesomorphic component is maximal in setters, while the ectomorphic component is maximal in centres.  相似文献

AIM: The aims of the present study were: a) to determine the anthropometric profile, body composition and somatotype of elite Greek female basketball (B), volleyball (V) and handball (H) players, b) to compare the mean scores among sports and c) to detect possible differences in relation to competition level. METHODS: A total of 518 female athletes, all members of the Greek first National League (A1 and A2 division) in B, V and H sport teams participated in the present study. Twelve anthropometric measures required for the calculation of body composition indexes and somatotype components were obtained according to the established literature. RESULTS: V athletes were the tallest (P<0.001) among the three groups of athletes, had the lowest values of body fat (P<0.001) and their somatotype was characterized as balanced endomorph (3.4-2.7-2.9). B athletes were taller (P<0.01) and leaner (P<0.001) than H players, with a somatotype characterized as mesomorph-endomorph (3.7-3.2-2.4). H athletes were the shortest of all (P<0.01), had the highest percentage of body fat (P<0.001) and their somatotype was mesomorph-endomorph (4.2-4.7-1.8). In comparison with their A2 counterparts the A1 division players were taller (P<0.001) and heavier (P<0.01), but at the same time leaner (P<0.001), and exhibited higher homogeneity in somatotype characteristics (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Anthropometric, body composition and somatotype variables of Greek female elite teamball players varied among sports; selection criteria, hours of training and sport-specific physiological demands during the game could explain the observed differences. More data are certainly needed to define the anthropometric profile of B, V and H female athletes internationally.  相似文献

Athletic amenorrhea: lack of association with body fat   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The most commonly tested hypothetical cause of athletic amenorrhea has been low body fat. Test results have conflicted because of mixed groups of athletes and methodologic problems. In this study, we measured body fat only in distance runners (greater than 53 km X wk-1) of the same somatotype who clearly had regular menses or secondary amenorrhea; this permitted more valid group comparison of body fat using hydrostatic weighing. The regularly menstruating group (N = 7) had 12 periods X yr-1 at intervals of 26.5 +/- 1.0 (SE) days with a duration of 4.1 +/- 0.4 days. In the athletic amenorrhea group (N = 7), menstrual periods had been absent for 1 to 10 yr (average = 3.9 +/- 1.3 yr); they were gynecologically evaluated to restrict the group to those with athletic amenorrhea. The groups were similar in a number of categories: weight, height, age, menarcheal age, weekly training mileage, days/week training, years of training, and maximum oxygen uptake. Percent body fat for the two groups was the same: 17.7 +/- 2.1% for the amenorrheic athletes and 17.4 +/- 1.2% for the regularly menstruating athletes (P = 0.91). These data do not support the idea that low body fat per se causes athletic amenorrhea.  相似文献

The physiological characteristics of 10 male elite sport parachutists (31.6 +/- 3.69 years of age) were determined and compared to 10 male non-sport parachutist controls (30.2 +/- 4.31 years) and other selected elite athletes. The typical sport parachutist was a highly educated (16.4 +/- 2.41 years), first born (9 out of 10), and, more often than not, single individual. During their mean 10.8 years of sport parachuting, these individuals made an average total number of 1,950 jumps (range 980 to 3,100) with a mean of 237.5 jumps during each of the last three years. Mean total free fall time was 22 h and 40 min. Compared to the non-sport parachutist control group, the elite sport parachutists were significantly higher (p less than 0.05) in aerobic power (47.4 +/- 9.04 vs. 37.2 +/- 4.67 ml X kg-1 X min-1), vital capacity (5.27 +/- 0.49 vs. 5.05 +/- 0.31 L), maximum heart rate (203.2 +/- 9.2 vs. 190.1 +/- 7.4 bpm), and back hyperextension flexibility (21.12 +/- 4.1 vs. 18.41 +/- 2.4 in). The elite sport parachutist were also significantly lower (p less than 0.05) in relative (%) body fat when compared to the control group (15.7 +/- 4.51 vs. 20.1 +/- 2.12%). The two groups were not significantly different (p greater than 0.05) with respect to resting heart rate, absolute body weight, dominant hand-grip strength, or lower back/hamstring flexibility as measured by the sit-and-reach test. Regarding somatotype, the elite sport parachutist can be classified as a balanced mesomorph. Compared to other selected elite athletes, the sport parachutists were lower in aerobic power and higher in relative body fat, yet with a summation of triceps, suprailiac, and abdominal skinfolds in the acceptable range for male athletes. The elite sport parachutists were approximately mid-range in absolute body weight and lower back/hamstring flexibility when compared to other selected elite athletes. Based on the findings of this study, there is evidence to suggest that some form of regular aerobic exercise along with a stretching and flexibility program is advisable for those individuals considering frequent participation and desiring peak performance in sport parachuting.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: A valgus lower limb alignment has been noted during noncontact anterior cruciate ligament injuries. A video drop-jump test can indicate an athlete's ability to control lower limb axial alignment in the coronal plane. HYPOTHESES: Female athletes have decreased knee separation distances on landing and acceleration; male athletes have a neutrally aligned lower limb position. A neuromuscular training program will significantly increase knee separation distance in female athletes. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 2. METHODS: The authors tested 325 female and 130 male athletes aged 11 to 19 years. The distance between the hips, knees, and ankles was measured during a drop-jump test. The separation distance between the knees and ankles was normalized by the hip separation distance. A neuromuscular training program (Sportsmetrics) was completed by 62 female athletes, and their jump-landing characteristics were reexamined. RESULTS: A marked decrease in knee separation distance was found on takeoff in 80% of female athletes and in 72% of male athletes. There was no difference between male and female athletes in the normalized knee and ankle separation distance during the landing and takeoff phases. The knee separation distance on landing was 23 +/- 9 cm in the female athletes and 22 +/- 8 cm in the male athletes. The normalized knee separation distance was 51% +/- 19% in the female athletes and 51% +/- 15% in the male athletes. After training, statistically significant increases were found in the female athletes in the knee separation distance on landing (29 +/- 8 cm, P < .0001) and in the normalized knee separation distance (68% +/- 18%, P < .0001). The trained female athletes had significantly greater knee separation distance and normalized knee separation distance than did the males (P < .0001). CONCLUSIONS: The majority of untrained female and male athletes demonstrated a valgus alignment appearance on the video test. After neuromuscular training, female athletes had improved knee separation distances and a more neutral lower limb alignment on landing and takeoff.  相似文献

This study comparatively assessed the somatotype characteristics of elite male Nigerian power athletes who comprised middleweight boxers (n = 23), weightlifters (n = 18) and wrestlers (n = 21), as well as a nonathletic group (n = 19). They were aged 24-35 years. Analysis of variance and Scheffe post hoc method were used to determine significant differences in the mean somatotype ratings of the groups. Among the groups, the nonathletes (4.02) were most significantly endomorphic (p less than 0.05). The weightlifters (5.12) and wrestler (5.04) were more significantly mesomorphic (p less than 0.05) than the boxers. (3.18) and nonathletes (3.06). The wrestlers' and weightlifters' dominance in mesomorphy confirms earlier reports on the salience of mesomorphy in performing strength-related skills.  相似文献

Central hemodynamics such as ascending aortic blood pressure (BP), wave reflection and myocardial perfusion are clinically important in the context of cardiovascular health. Ultra-endurance athletes may be at greater risk of cardiovascular abnormalities due to chronically increased physiological stress placed on the cardiovascular system. This study was a cross-sectional investigation that compared central hemodynamics in ultra-endurance athletes and matched controls. Forty-four athletes (36 males; aged mean+/-S.D., 34+/-8 years) undergoing ultra-endurance training (16.3+/-3.7 h/week) were compared to 44 matched recreationally active (1.2+/-0.9 h/week) controls (36 males; aged 34+/-8 years). Brachial BP was measured using an oscillometric device while central hemodynamics including ascending aortic BP, wave reflection (augmentation index, AIx), ejection duration, sub-endocardial perfusion (SEVR) and timing of the reflected wave (T(R)) were determined by applanation tonometry and pulse wave analysis. There were no significant (P>0.05) differences between groups in AIx (athletes and controls; 6+/-12% versus 6+/-13%, respectively), T(R) (athletes and controls; 165+/-22 ms versus 165+/-19 ms, respectively), brachial (athletes and controls; 51+/-9 mmHg versus 48+/-12 mmHg, respectively) or central pulse pressure (33+/-5 mmHg versus 31+/-7 mmHg). However, athletes had significantly increased SEVR (226+/-42% versus 198+/-46%; P<0.001) despite having a longer ejection duration (348+/-19 ms versus 339+/-18 ms; P<0.05). Furthermore, the amount of exercise training volume was significantly related to central (r=-0.46; P=0.002), but not brachial pulse pressure (r=-0.28; P>0.05). Ultra-endurance athletes had increased sub-endocardial perfusion capacity and the quantity of exercise training was associated with central rather than peripheral hemodynamics.  相似文献

PURPOSE: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine whether there is a correlation between left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism in adolescent athletes. METHODS: Seventy-five competitive soccer players (aged 15 +/- 1.2 yr) and 52 untrained control subjects (aged 15 +/- 1.6 yr) were examined with echocardiography (echo) and bioelectrical impedance analysis. The ACE genotype of all subjects was determined by PCR and correlated with left ventricular mass (LVM) indices. RESULTS: Allele frequencies were comparable between athletes and controls. Body surface area (BSA), fat-free mass (FFM), and all mean echo measurements were significantly greater in athletes than in controls. LVM and LVM indices for both BSA and FFM were all significantly greater in athletes than in controls (LVM 195.3 +/- 32 g vs 165.3 +/- 37.6 g; LVM/BSA 115.5 +/- 18.9 g x mq(-1) vs 95 +/- 18.2 g x mq(-1); LVM/FFM 3.5 +/- 0.5 vs 3 +/- 0.54, P < 0.001 for the three variables). Left ventricular hypertrophy was found in 17 (23%) athletes. There was no correlation between ACE I/D polymorphism and athletes with LVH as the II and DD genotype frequencies were identical (41%). However, in athletes with LVH, the presence of the D allele was associated with a greater LVM index than compared to homozygous II genotype (LVM = 145 +/- 7.6 g x mq(-1) in DD+ID group vs 135 +/- 2.9 g x mq(-1) in II group, P = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS: The results of the study show that significant changes occur in cardiac morphology and function in adolescent athletes. Interestingly, the ACE I/D polymorphism was associated with the degree of cardiac hypertrophy but not with the occurrence of LVH itself.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between somatotype components and maximal alactacid anaerobic power (MAAP) in trained subjects. The somatotype components (endomorphy: means = 2.66, S.D. = +/- 0.78; mesomorphy: means = 5.45, S.D. = +/- 1.12; ectomorphy: means = 2.46, S.D. = +/- 0.88) and total MAAP were measured in 40 male fencers (aged, means 21.79, S.D. = +/- 3.97) in order to determine the correlations. The results did not show any correlations between the parameters. It can be concluded that the MAAP of an individual does not depend on the somatotype; but it may also be assumed that MAAP show changes with the percentage of fibre type, enzymatic activity in these fibres involved by large muscle groups which are relatively related to musculo-skeletal development (second component of somatotype) and neuro-muscular properties of the subjects, all having a genetic basis.  相似文献

PURPOSE: Exercise-induced hypoxemia in highly trained athletes is associated with an increase in histamine release during exercise. The cells most implicated in blood histamine release are basophils. The aim of this study was to determine whether high-level endurance training induces modifications in histamine releasability from human basophils. METHODS: Seven young highly trained athletes (YA) [aged 26.1+/-1.3 yr (mean +/- SEM)] and seven master athletes (MA) (64.4+/-4.1 yr), all known to develop exercise-induced hypoxemia, were respectively compared with seven young untrained men (YC) (23.0+/-1.5 yr) and seven older untrained men (OC) (61.6+/-1.3 yr). During an incremental exhaustive exercise, blood samples for measurement of anti-IgE-induced histamine release from leukocytes were drawn at rest, VO2max, and recovery. RESULTS: Basophils from "leukocyte-rich" supernatant in YA and MA showed significantly higher histamine release induced by anti-IgE (1 microg x mL(-1) than, respectively, YC (P<0.01) and OC (P<0.05) at rest, VO2ax (P<0.01), and recovery (P<0.01). Basophils in YA and MA also showed a histamine release induced by anti-IgE that was higher at VO2max than at rest (respectively. P<0.01 and P<0.05), but this change was not found in the control groups. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the basophils in highly trained endurance athletes, both young and older, showed higher anti-IgE-induced histamine release than those of untrained men. This effect of high-level training seemed to be potentiated by exercise.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to characterise the VO2 kinetic response to moderate intensity cycle exercise in endurance-trained (END) and sprint or power-trained (SPR) track and field master athletes ranging in age from 45 to 85 years. We hypothesised that the time constant (tau) describing the Phase II VO2 on-response would be smaller in the END compared to the SPR athletes, and that the tau would become greater with increasing age in both groups. Eighty-four master athletes who were competing at either the British or European Veteran Athletics Championships acted as subjects, and were classified as either END (800 m - marathon; n = 41), or SPR (100 - 400 m and field events; n = 43) specialists. Subjects completed two 6 minute "step" transitions to a work rate of moderate intensity on a cycle ergometer and pulmonary gas exchange was measured breath-by-breath. Analysis of variance revealed that SPR athletes had slower VO2 on-kinetics (i.e., greater tau) compared to END athletes at each of the age groups studied: 46 - 55 yrs (END: 25 +/- 6 vs. SPR: 36 +/- 9 s; p < 0.10), 56 - 65 yrs (END: 25 +/- 5 vs. SPR: 35 +/- 10 s; p < 0.05), 66 - 75 yrs (END: 29 +/- 10 vs. SPR: 40 +/- 13 s; p < 0.05), and 76 - 85 yrs (END: 31 +/- 10 vs. SPR: 51 +/- 18 s; p < 0.05). The VO2 on-kinetics became slower with advancing age in the SPR athletes (p < 0.05 between 56 - 65 and 76 - 85 yrs) but were not significantly changed in the END athletes. The slower VO2 on-kinetics in SPR compared to END master athletes is consistent both with differences in physiology (e.g., muscle fibre type, oxidative/glycolytic capacity) and training between these specialist athletes. Master END athletes have similar tau values to their younger counterparts (approximately 25 s) suggesting that participation in endurance exercise training limits the slowing of VO2 on-kinetics with age in this population.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The causal effect of early febrile convulsions (FC) on later-onset temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) remains unclear. In this study, we sought to examine the hippocampal alterations in epileptic children with or without FC history by using MR spectroscopy and volumetry. METHODS: Fifty-five children ranging in age from 18 months to 15 years were enrolled in this study. Subjects were divided into three groups: the control group without either TLE or history of FC (n = 16), the TLE group with early history of FC (TLE + FC; n = 22), and the TLE group without FC history (n = 17). Measurement of hippocampal volume (HV) was performed on thin section T1-weighted images acquired with a 3D gradient echo MR image and normalized by the intracranial volume. Each individual subject had two measures of lateralization; one gives the smaller side of HV and the other the contralateral larger side of HV, assuming that the side with smaller HV is the possible primary site of seizure focus and the contralateral larger HV the secondary or normal site. Single-voxel proton MR spectroscopy of the hippocampi was performed, with metabolic ratio n-acetylaspartate (NAA)/choline (Cho) + creatine plus phosphocreatine (Cr) calculated and grouped separately as were with volumetry. RESULTS: The overall mean HV for the control group was 2.61 +/- 0.21 cm(3) at an average intracranial volume of 965 +/- 241 cm(3), and the asymmetry index for hippocampal volume was (2.32 +/- 1.58)%. The overall mean HV was 2.30 +/- 0.33 cm(3) for TLE + FC group and 2.34 +/- 0.33 cm(3) for TLE group. Mean HV differed significantly for the three groups (P < .01). When the small and large sides were analyzed separately, significant differences were found between control and TLE as well as between control and TLE + FC for the smaller side (P < .05), whereas for the larger side significant differences were found only between control and TLE + FC. In MR spectroscopic measurements, the mean NAA/(Cr + Cho) of bilateral hippocampi was 0.77 +/- 0.06 for control group, 0.62 +/- 0.12 for TLE + FC group, and 0.66 +/- 0.11 for TLE group. In terms of statistically significant difference between groups, spectroscopic results were similar to volumetric measurements, except that there was no significant interaction effect between groups and measures of asymmetrical indices (P = .272). CONCLUSION: Children with TLE and early history of FC tend to have lower hippocampal volumes and NAA/(Cr + Cho) ratios than do TLE children without FC history. The TLE + FC group seems to have increased vulnerability of the contralateral hippocampus as compared with TLE group. MR volumetry and spectroscopy are equally capable of showing the trends of hippocampal alternations in children with TLE with or without FC history.  相似文献

To evaluate the impact of different training levels on left ventricular (LV) filling dynamics, Doppler mitral flow was derived in 25 amateur endurance-trained athletes (amateurs) aged 31 +/- 9 years, with a personal marathon record > 200 min, and in 26 ultra endurance athletes (top athletes) aged 32 +/- 8 years, with a personal marathon record < 170 min, during bicycle exercise in supine position. In particular atrial filling fraction as the relative share of atrial contribution to LV filling was measured. During exercise (150 watt) atrial filling fraction increased significantly more in amateurs from 25% to 34% compared to top athletes from 25% to 29% (p < 0.001). Two min post exercise atrial filling fraction already reached baseline values in top athletes (25%), while it remained significantly elevated in amateurs compared to baseline values (29%, p < 0.001). Only ten min post exercise atrial filling fraction showed baseline values in amateurs (26%). Rate pressure product was not significantly different at all levels of exercise. Thus, while atrial filling fraction rose in both study groups during exercise, it returned earlier to baseline values in top athletes than in amateurs. This indicates a better cardiac adaptation to physical stress and a better diastolic performance during exercise in endurance athletes with a higher training level.  相似文献

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate growth hormone (GH) and ghrelin levels in response to physical exercise in athletes. METHODS: Two different exercise workloads were administered in two different groups of athletes. Group A athletes (19 males, 18 females; mean age +/- standard deviation: 25+/-6.7 years), performing a 60-90 min training session at approximately 80% of VO2max, were sampled for GH and ghrelin determinations before and immediately at the end of a training session on-the-field. Group B athletes (4 males; mean age: 28.2+/-7.2 years) performed two consecutive 30-min cycling sessions at 80% of individual VO2max at different time intervals between bouts (2 and 6 h) in two different days. GH and ghrelin concentrations were determined in blood samples collected at 15-min intervals during exercise and following 1 h of recovery. RESULTS: In group A athletes, GH levels increased after the training session (P<0.0001), with no differences between males and females. In male athletes, ghrelin levels significantly decreased after the training session (from 1 506.4+/-859 to 1 254.8+/-661.7 pg/mL, P<0.05), while no significant changes were found in females. No correlations were observed between GH and ghrelin levels at rest and after training. In group B athletes, GH levels significantly increased after the first exercise bouts (peak: 26.8+/-11.2 and 17.3+/-3.5 ng/mL, respectively), while the pattern of GH response was different after the second bout of exercise performed at 2-h or 6-h interval. In fact, peak GH concentration in response to the second bout (4.3+/-1.6 ng/mL) was lower (P<0.01) than that of the first bout when the interval elapsed was only 2 h, while a recovery of GH responsiveness was evident after the 6-h interval between the two exercise bouts (11.9+/-3.3 ng/mL). As far as ghrelin levels are concerned, no significant changes were observed during and after the two exercise bouts performed at the different time intervals. CONCLUSION: GH responses to prolonged exercise bouts (60-90 min) are associated with changes in ghrelin levels only in male athletes, while repeated exercise bouts of lower duration (30 min), capable to determine marked GH responses, are divorced from changes in ghrelin concentrations.  相似文献

PURPOSE: To study young adult elite athletes with age- and sex-matched sedentary controls to assess sex-specific differences for left ventricular (LV) and right ventricular (RV) volumes and mass as well as for LV contraction and relaxation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 23 male athletes (mean age 25 +/- 4 years, training 22 +/- 7 hours/week in rowing, swimming, or triathlon) and 20 female athletes (mean age 24 +/- 4 years, training 19 +/- 5 hours/week in rowing, swimming, or triathlon) and age- and sex-matched sedentary controls (21 male/17 female) underwent cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging (1.5 Tesla). Cardiac phase contrast imaging using a black-blood k-space segmented gradient echo sequence was used for analysis of cardiac contraction and relaxation and steady-state free-precession cine images were acquired for determination of cardiac volumes and mass. RESULTS: Male and female athletes showed similar increases in LV and RV volume and mass indices when compared to controls (ranging between 15% and 42%). No sex-specific differences in training effect on LV and RV volumes, mass indices, and ejection fractions, as well as LV to RV ratios of these volume and mass indices (parameters of balanced LV and RV dilatation and hypertrophy) were observed (all P for interaction >0.05). Similarly, no sex-specific differences in training effect on cardiac contraction and relaxation were found (all P for interaction >0.05). CONCLUSION: Young adult elite athletes do not show sex-specific adaptive structural and functional changes to exercise training in accordance with the benign nature of the hypertrophy associated with athlete's heart.  相似文献

Equations by Durnin and Womersley [(D-W), Br. J. Nutr. 32:77, 1974], Jackson and Pollock [(J-P), Br. J. Nutr. 40:497, 1978], and Lohman [(L), Human Biol., 53:181, 1981] for estimating body density (BD) purportedly overcome the problem of specificity by accounting for age and/or the curvilinear relationship between skinfolds (SF) and BD. Their equations were validated on 265 male athletes against percent fat measured by underwater weighing [(UWW); mean +/- SD = 9.2 +/- 4.4%]. Equations by Sloan [(S), J. Appl. Physiol. 23:311, 1967], Katch and McArdle [(K-M), Human. Biol. 45:445, 1973], and Forsyth and Sinning [(F-S), Med. Sci. Sports 5:174, 1973] were included as "linear regression models" to compare to the curvilinear models of J-P, D-W, and L. Differences between UWW and estimated mean values ranged from -1.1 to +5.9%; correlations ranged from 0.58 to 0.85; SEE ranged from +/- 2.41 to +/- 3.61% and total error (E) ranged from 2.38 to 6.97%. The seven D-W equations overestimated mean percent fat by from 3.9 to 5.9%. The K-M, S, and L equations overestimated by 1.3, 0.5, and 1.7%, respectively. The F-S equations overestimated by 2.4 to 3.8%. Of the 21 equations evaluated, only 3 by J-P gave estimates not significantly different from UWW percent fat. Regression analyses of the relationship between UWW (y) and estimated (x) percent fat values from those equations were: y = 1.037x - 0.08 +/- 2.38, E = 2.38, r = 0.84; 0.869x + 1.36 +/- 2.45, E = 2.51, r = 0.83; 1.107x - 1.14 +/- 2.51, E = 2.53, r = 0.82.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Pattern of energy expenditure during simulated competition   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
PURPOSE: To determine how athletes spontaneously use their energetic reserves when the only instruction was to finish in minimal time, and whether experience from repeated performance changes the strategy of recreational athletes. METHODS: Recreational road cyclists/speed skaters (N = 9) completed three laboratory time trials of 1500 m on a windload braked cycle. The pattern of energy use was calculated from total work and from the work attributable to aerobic metabolism, which allowed computation of anaerobic energy use. Regional level speed skaters (N = 8) also performed a single 1500-m time trial with the same protocol and measurements. RESULTS: The serial trials were completed in (mean +/- SD) 133.8 +/- 6.6, 133.9 +/- 5.8, 133.8 +/- 5.5 s (P > 0.05 among trials); and in 125.7 +/- 10.9 s in the skaters (P < 0.05 vs cyclists). The [OV0312]O(2peak) during the terminal 200 m was similar within trials (3.23 +/- 0.44, 3.34 +/- 0.44, 3.30 +/- 0.51 (P > 0.05)) versus 3.91 +/- 0.68 L.min-1 in the skaters (P < 0.05 vs cyclists). In all events, the initial power output and anaerobic energy use was high and decayed to a more or less constant value ( approximately 25% of peak) over the remainder of the event. Contrary to predictions based on an assumed "all out" starting strategy, the subjects reserved some of their ability to perform anaerobic work for a terminal acceleration. The total work accomplished was not different between trials (43.53, 43.78, and 47.48 kJ in the recreational athletes, or between the cyclists and skaters (47.79 kJ). The work attributable to anaerobic sources was not different between the rides (20.67, 20.53, and 21.12 kJ in the recreational athletes). In the skaters, the work attributable to anaerobic sources was significantly larger versus the cyclists (24.67 kJ). CONCLUSION: Energy expenditure during high-intensity cycling seems: 1) to be expended in a manner that allows the athlete to preserve an anaerobic energetic contribution throughout an event, 2) does not appear to have a large learning effect in already well trained cyclists, and 3) anaerobic energy expenditure may be the performance discriminating factor among groups of athletes.  相似文献

Weight-bearing exercise during adolescence may enhance peak bone mineral density (BMD) and reduce osteoporosis risk. The association of sports participation before and after menarche with areal BMD (by central DXA) was investigated in 99 female high school athletes (age 15.5+/-1.3 year). The frequency and duration of structured sports (school-based or other organized team) were assessed using an interviewer-assisted questionnaire. Overall, the average number of years of weight-bearing sport participation was 7.4+/-3.4 years; 72% of the athletes began sport participation before menarche. Training patterns and BMD were examined by tertiles of yearly weight-bearing sport participation (hours/year) before (WBpre), after (WBpost) menarche, and in total (WBtotal). After adjusting for chronological age, gynecological age, and BMI, compared to athletes in the WBtotal low tertile, athletes in the WBtotal high tertile had significantly greater BMD at the spine (p=0.009), total hip (p=0.03), trochanter (p=0.03), and total body (p=0.009). Similar patterns were found by WBpre or WBpost status, separately, with the exception of spine BMD which was significantly different across tertiles in WBpost only (p<0.01). While the number of years of participation was similar across tertiles of WBtotal, the number of months/year was significantly greater among athletes in the high tertile than athletes in the low tertile (9.2+/-3.4 month/year versus 5.0+/-2.9 month/year, respectively (p<0.001)). These results indicate that near year-round participation in structured weight-bearing sports during early adolescence may help young girls optimize bone mineral accrual during these critical years, and may decrease their risk of osteoporosis with advancing age.  相似文献

36 former Swiss elite athletes, all of them members of the National team in 1973, were re-examined in 1988 at an average age of 42 years, together with a control group of 23 normally active men. In 1988, maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) was 68 +/- 5 ml/kg.min in the 18 still active runners, 55 +/- 8 ml/kg.min in the 9 inactive former runners, 45 +/- 6 ml/kg.min in bobsledders, and 44 +/- 6 ml/kg.min in controls. In 1988, the 27 runners had modest but significantly more frequent radiological signs of degenerative hip disease than non-runners, while no influence of long-term physical training on the radiological state of the ankle joint was found. In 1988, runners tended to report themselves healthier; subgroup analyses revealed 1) that this superior self-rated health was confined to those runners still active in 1988 (p less than 0.05) and that VO2max in 1988 was associated with subjective wellbeing (p less than 0.05), and 2) that body fat content was the strongest negative predictor of self-rated health (p = 0.001). 22% of former elite athletes indicated chronic, sports-related complaints but nevertheless rated their health as good as their athletic counterparts free of complaints. 53% of the elite athletes felt that the "benefits" of their own sports career outweighed its "costs", and in two of five of all athletes even "by far". This attitude was neither significantly influenced by the existence of chronic sports-related complaints nor by radiological signs of degenerative hip disease.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

AIM: The purpose of the study was to examine whether an unaccustomed increase in training volume would result in characteristics changes in heart rate variability (HRV), in order to determine if this marker can be used to diagnose overtraining. METHODS: Nine experienced endurance athletes increased their usual amount of training by 100% within 4 weeks. Night ECG was recorded before (baseline) and after (OVER) this period of overload, and after 2 weeks of recovery (REC). RESULTS: We diagnosed overtraining in 6 subjects using both physiological and psychological criteria. No difference was noted in heart rate for night periods (56+/-12, 55+/-10 and 53+/-15 bpm, respectively; p>0.05). We found no significant changes of LF/HF (1.10+/-0.92, 0.96+/-0.57 and 0.59+/-0.43, respectively; p>0.05) or HF expressed in normalized units (54.81+/-20.12, 53.81+/-11.35 and 66.15+/-15.12%, respectively; p>0.05). CONCLUSION: In the conditions of the present study, HRV during sleep does not seem to be a valid marker of overtraining in male endurance athletes. Before concluding to the uselessness of this tool in the monitoring of the syndrome, longitudinal studies with elite or sub-elite athletes are needed to determine if spontaneously developed overtraining results in the same response.  相似文献
