Blood products are critical to health systems and donations by voluntary nonremunerated donors are recommended. Worldwide, however, only around 5% of those eligible to donate do so and around half of those never return to donate again. This review focuses on what deters first-time donors, what predicts their retention, and what interventions may promote retention of this group. A comprehensive search of relevant databases identified 9 studies investigating motives and deterrents of first-time donors, 14 studies investigating predictors for first-time donors (13 whole blood [WB] and 2 plasmapheresis), and 15 studies (in 14 published articles) detailing interventions conducted on first-time donors. Drawing on an established blood donation taxonomy, studies were classified by 2 independent raters. Interventions were also classified into traditional, behavioral, or social science interventions. With only 2 eligible studies among first-time plasmapheresis donors, analyses focused on WB donors. First-time WB donors reported benevolent and collectivistic motivations, as well as personal benefits to commence WB donation. Self-reported deterrents have typically not been examined. Intention predicted first-time donor retention with intention determined by attitudes and a sense of (perceived behavioral) control. However, anxiety, adverse events, and deferrals all deterred retention. Traditional interventions, such as reminders and incentives, are widespread yet had only a small effect on return of first-time donors. Although behavioral science interventions such as fluid loading are effective, the strongest effect for the return of first-time donors was found when individual psychological support was provided. The purpose of this analysis was to identify the factors associated with the commencement and continuation of first WB donations. The current review revealed that self-reported motivators are typically not effective, and most successful predictive factors identified have not been translated into interventions. Future work would do well to identify, manage, and meet donors' expectations along with developing more individualized donation experiences. Blood donor research should delineate donor career stages; addressing first-time donor retention will support stable panels for blood collection agencies.  相似文献

Studies of risk factors associated with reactions among autologous blood donors have been limited. Therefore, 2091 autologous and 4737 homologous donations were examined. Donors at greatest risk for reaction were autologous donors who had reactions at first donation; among 45 who made repeat donations for the same surgery, 17 (38%) had repeat reactions. The group least likely to experience reactions were the autologous donors greater than or equal to 66 years old; they experienced a 1.9 greater than or equal to percent (6/310) incidence of reactions. More reactions were seen in both autologous and homologous donors in the categories of first-time donor, female gender, decreasing age, and lower weight. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that all of these variables were independent predictors of donor reaction, with first-time donation (odds ratio, 2.4) and female gender (odds ratio, 1.9) being the strongest predictors of reaction. Donor room personnel should be alerted that autologous donors who react at first donation are very likely to react at subsequent donations. Contrary to common concern, elderly autologous donors are least likely to have reactions.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: To prevent donor loss and improve retention, it is important to understand the major deterrents to blood donation and to identify factors that can be effectively addressed by blood centers. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A 30-item self-administered questionnaire was completed in 2003 by 1705 first-time and 2437 repeat US donors who had not donated in 2 to 3 years. Asian, Hispanic, black, and white first-time and repeat donors rated the importance of deterrents to donation in their decision to not return with a 1 to 5 scale. Categorical analysis of variance methods were used to compare the importance of deterrents between first-time and repeat donors of different race or ethnicity. RESULTS: Not having a convenient place to donate was most commonly cited as an important or very important reason for not returning by 32 to 42 percent of first-time and 26 to 43 percent of repeat respondents. Although bad treatment and poor staff skills were less of a barrier than convenience, they were more important for minority donors. Other factors such as physical side effects, foreign travel, or length of the process appeared less important. CONCLUSION: Inconvenience is a major barrier to donating, suggesting that mobile collections and increased hours of operation might help recapture lapsed donors. The finding that lapsed minority donors were more likely to give bad treatment and poor staff skills as important reasons to not donate is disconcerting in light of the changing donor demographics and increased efforts to recruit these donors.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Automated red blood cell (RBC) apheresis offers the advantage of collecting 2 units of RBCs (2RBC) from one donation, but may expose donors to procedure-related risks. This study evaluated the relative safety of 2RBC compared to whole-blood (WB) donation with a focus on young donors.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Adverse reactions recorded at the collection site or requiring outside medical care were compared after 4,348,686 WB and 206,570 2RBC donations in 26 regional blood centers.
RESULTS: 2RBC donors were more likely than WB donors to be male (91.6% vs. 50.3%) and repeat donors (84.0% vs. 81.0%). The overall complication rate was higher for 2RBC than WB collections (627.9 vs. 435.1 per 10,000; odds ratio [OR], 1.44; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.41-1.47), but more than 96% of all reactions were minor in severity. For donors younger than 20 years, adverse events were equally or less common after 2RBC than after WB donation, but were more common after 2RBC for donors 20 years or older. The rate of major systemic complications was significantly lower for 2RBC than WB donations in all age groups (10.2 vs. 14.3 per 10,000 collections; OR, 0.71; 95% CI, 0.62-0.82). Overall, the need for outside medical care was similar for 2RBC and WB collections (3.4 vs. 4.2 per 10,000 donations, respectively), but significantly less likely after 2RBC donation for donors less than 20 years old (3.8 vs. 7.0. per 10,000 donations; OR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.32-0.89).
CONCLUSION: 2RBC collection procedures, as currently performed in the American Red Cross, are associated with fewer immediate adverse reactions in young donors and have a comparable safety profile in older donors. These data support the collection of 2RBC from young donors.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: There is a declining margin between US blood collections and transfusions. Donation patterns were examined to characterize returning first-time donors and predict the impact on blood availability of decreasing the number of nonreturning donors. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: First-time donors giving between 1991 and 1994 were followed for 3 to 6 years. The impact of decreasing the number of nonreturning donors in a 12-month period was projected using the Poisson distribution to model the donation patterns of 539,063 donors who gave in 1995. Repeat donors were classified as "returning first-time" (gave a first-time donation within 12 months of their index donation), "established" (gave a repeat donation), and "inactive" (didn't donate in the 12 months before their index donation). RESULTS: A total of 49 percent of first-time donors did not return within 6 years. Returning first-time donors tended to be US born, white, and had more than a high school education. In 1995, 30 percent of donors were first time, 31 percent were established, 7 percent were returning first time, and 32 percent were inactive, giving 1.5, 2.4, 1.9, and 1.7 donations in 12 months, respectively. Reducing nonreturning donors by 5 percent could increase blood collections by 2.7 percent. Similarly, 15 or 25 percent reductions in nonreturns could increase collections by 8.6 or 16.0 percent, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Most donors are not giving near the donation limit. A substantial increase in donations could be achieved by a relatively small decrease in donor nonreturn. Research is needed to understand why approximately half of first-time donors donate only once.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The potential effectiveness of various donation incentive programs may vary by demographics, first-time or repeat status, and collection site. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Attitudes toward future incentives were obtained from a 1998 anonymous survey sent to 92,581 US blood donors. Responses (encouraged, discouraged, no difference) to incentives were compared within demographic groups, donations sites, and between first-time and repeat community whole-blood (WB) donors using chi-square tests and logistic regressions adjusted for sample design. RESULTS: Incentives most likely to encourage donation return among all 45,588 WB respondents were blood credits (61%), cholesterol screening (61%), and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening (73% of men). Younger donors (< or = 25 years old) were 4 to 5 times more likely to be encouraged to donate if offered compensatory incentives (tickets to events, discounts or lottery and/or raffle tickets), gifts, or a token of appreciation than were those donors older than 55. This age effect influenced positive attitudes toward incentives in first-time donors and in donors giving at schools, universities, or military sites. Among all donors, up to 7 to 9 percent reported they would be discouraged to return if offered compensatory incentives. CONCLUSIONS: Blood credits and cholesterol and PSA screening would be well received at all donation sites. Gifts, compensatory incentives, and tokens of appreciation appeal more to younger donors. These data may allow blood centers to optimize recruitment by tailoring limited incentive resources more effectively.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The recruitment and retention of voluntary, nonremunerated blood donors continues to be a challenge in China. Understanding donor demographics and donor characteristics is crucial for any blood center in developing strategies to recruit potential donors. STUDY DESIGN and METHODS: The study population included all 29,784 whole blood donors from January 1 to December 31, 2003, at the Urumqi City Blood Center or one of its mobile blood collection buses. Demographic data, location, and frequency of donation and results of testing for transfusion-transmissible infection (TTI) were evaluated. RESULTS: The typical blood donor in Urumqi is male, less than 36 years of age, and Han Chinese; has at least a high school education; is a first-time donor; and donated at a mobile blood collection bus. The majority, 71 percent, were first-time donors. Among all donors, the seroprevalence rate of TTI was 3.5 percent for first-time donors, 2.7 percent for donors who donated twice, and 2.1 percent for donors who had donated three or more times. Han Chinese had lower seroprevalence rates of TTIs than ethnic minorities. Lower seroprevalence rates of TTIs were found among donors at mobile buses than at the blood centers. CONCLUSION: Similar to other donor populations, higher rates of TTIs were observed among first-time donors, and the prevalence decreased among repeated donors. One possible strategy for improving the safety of the blood supply might be for the blood center to recruit a cadre of donors who donate repeatedly, instead of relying on campaigns to recruit new donors from workplaces at each donation cycle.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Understanding blood donor motivations is crucial to improving effectiveness of donor recruitment and retention programs. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Data from a 1998 survey of 92,581 U.S. blood donors were used to evaluate factors influencing the decision to donate in various demographic groups. Data were weighted to adjust for response and sample design. RESULTS: Of 52,650 respondents, 45,588 gave whole-blood (WB) donations. BACKGROUND: There are no reports in the transfusion medicine literature that describe adverse reactions and donor arm injuries after whole-blood donation based on solicited information. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The present study solicited adverse reaction and donor arm injury information from 1000 randomly selected whole-blood donors approximately 3 weeks after the whole-blood donation. Two 16-gauge phlebotomy needles in use were also compared. RESULTS: Thirty-six percent of the donors had one or more adverse effects (AEs). The most common systemic AEs were fatigue (7.8%), vasovagal symptoms (5.3%), and nausea and vomiting (1.1%). The most common arm findings were bruise (22.7%), arm soreness (10.0%), and hematoma (1.7%). Men were half as likely as women to have an AE (23% AE vs. 48% AE, p < 0.0001). Repeat blood donors had fewer AEs than first-time blood donors (36% AE vs. 47% AE, p < 0.007), and African-American donors had numbers of AEs similar to those of Caucasian donors (31% AE vs. 38% AE, p = 0.30). The two phlebotomy needles did not differ in causing blood donor AEs. CONCLUSION: AEs after donation and complaints may be more common than previously thought. The postdonation interview is a good tool for defining the blood donor's experience. It can also be used to evaluate and potentially improve blood donor safety and comfort.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The need for blood products is constant and unremitting, yet only a small percentage of eligible individuals answer the appeal to donate. Further, most new donors never return to provide a repeat donation. The ongoing need to attract and retain new donors has led to the examination of psychosocial factors that may predict the likelihood of blood donation behavior. By use of regression techniques, prior studies have established that elements of the Theory of Planned Behavior (e.g., attitude, subjective norm, personal moral norm, and perceived control or self-efficacy) can predict intention to donate among nondonors. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Path analysis was used to further examine the utility of the Theory of Planned Behavior in predicting donation intention in a sample of 227 experienced donors who completed an online survey. Experiential measures relating to previous donations, including the experience of vasovagal reactions and overall donor satisfaction, were added to the model. RESULTS: The final model, which provided an excellent fit to the data, characterized 1) three direct pathways from attitude, subjective norm, and self-efficacy to donation intention and 2) four indirect pathways, wherein self-efficacy, personal moral norm, vasovagal reactions, and overall donor satisfaction influence donation intention through attitude. In total, 65 percent of the variance in donation intention and 50 percent of the variance in attitude is accounted for in this model. CONCLUSION: The Theory of Planned Behavior can be used to predict donation intentions among experienced donors. Further, the model's predictive utility is improved by considering the influence of previous donation experiences on donor attitudes.  相似文献

A growing body of evidence suggests that episodes of fainting can deter volunteer blood donors from returning to donate in the future. In contrast, relatively little is known about the effect of significantly more common mild reactions (e.g., faintness, dizziness, lightheadedness) on donor retention. In the present study, 1052 volunteer blood donors completed a standardized measure of subjective physiological reactions immediately after blood donation (Blood Donation Reactions Inventory), and individual scores were used to predict repeat donation behavior during a one-year follow-up. Results of a logistic regression analysis indicated that higher scores on the Blood Donation Reactions Inventory were associated with a significantly lower likelihood of repeat donation, and that novice donors who scored highest on the scale were less than half as likely to have returned to donate in the following year. These findings suggest that the Blood Donation Reactions Inventory is an effective method of assessing reactions that predict donor non-return, and therefore may be a useful addition to future studies aimed at enhancing donor satisfaction and retention.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The experience of unpleasant blood donation reactions (e.g., dizziness, nausea, and fainting) has been linked to negative attitudes about donation and decreased likelihood of repeat donation. Consequently, interventions to reduce the adverse effects of blood donation are important and likely to increase donor retention. Based on laboratory studies suggesting that social support attenuates both physical and psychological responses to stress, the present study hypothesized that the presence of a supportive person during the donation process may help reduce reactions.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A final sample of 65 men and women with fewer than three prior donations was randomly assigned to either donate blood as usual or donate with a supportive research assistant. Donors in the support condition were accompanied throughout the donation process by a female research assistant who provided encouragement, made reassuring remarks, and engaged in small talk. Donors in both conditions completed a series of questions to assess anxiety, experience of prefaint reactions, and willingness to provide a future donation.
RESULTS: Compared to standard donation controls, donors in the social support condition reported fewer prefaint reactions (F(1,61) = 9.15, p = 0.004, η2= 0.13) and greater likelihood of donating again within the next year (Z =−1.70, p < 0.05, one-tailed).
CONCLUSION: Relatively novice donors report reduced reactions to blood donation when accompanied by a supportive individual, suggesting that social support may be a simple strategy to enhance the donation experience and possibly increase donor retention.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Understanding factors that encourage different racial and ethnic groups to donate is crucial for donor recruitment and retention. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A 28-item self-administered questionnaire was completed in 2003 by 1862 Asian, 1479 black, 1641 Hispanic, and 2940 White US donors who had given whole blood within the past year. With a 1 to 5 scale, donors were asked to rate the importance of 17 factors in their last donation decision. Logistic regression was conducted to compare the odds of a factor being important or very important (score of 4 or 5) in one's decision to donate between race or ethnic groups, stratified by first-time and repeat status. RESULTS: More than 90 percent of each respondent group cited a desire, responsibility, or perceived duty to help others as an important or very important motivator. Being asked to donate at work was also an important motivator for all race and ethnic groups (56-70%). Getting the results of a health screen appealed to many (approx. 30% found it important or very important) and was most important to Black and Hispanic donors (odds ratios of 1.3-1.9 compared to White donors; p<0.003). CONCLUSION: Recruitment and retention programs should build on people's sense of social responsibility. Direct requests to donate are particularly effective motivators. Of a variety of incentives evaluated, offering more comprehensive health screens may motivate many donors, especially Black and Hispanic donors.  相似文献

Background: We conducted a donor survey to assess the occurrence of facial flushing and other symptoms during automated 2‐U red cell collections (2RBC) and plateletpheresis (PLT) procedures and evaluated the possible association of the reactions with angiotensin‐converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or with the collection technology. Methods: An online survey was developed using Zoomerang to capture details of the donors' experience and medication use after 2RBC or PLT donations in regional blood centers of the American Red Cross. Results: Between 12/16/09 and 4/19/10, 1,299 donors in five American Red Cross blood center regions completed an online survey (739 2RBC, 4.2% total registrations; 560 PLT, 2.3% total registrations). Facial flushing was reported by 29 donors, and was more likely associated with 2RBC than PLT procedures (3.0% vs. 1.3%, P = 0.03). Facial flushing with 2RBC donation was reported by eight of 72 (11%) donors on ACE inhibitors; and 14 of 667 (2%) donors who were not taking ACE inhibitors (P = 0.001). The incidence of facial flushing reactions with PLT donation was less than 2% whether donors reported ACEI inhibitor use or not. More than 95% of the donors reported their intent to donate again, regardless of symptoms. Conclusion: Facial flushing was more often reported by 2RBC donors taking ACE inhibitors than other donors [11% vs. 2%; P = 0.001]; and was uncommon among PLT donors, irrespective of ACE inhibitor use (<2%). All blood donors should be informed of the potential for common, minor side effects of the collection procedure and the possible but rare occurrence of more medically serious complications. J. Clin. "Life to Life," an 11-minute videotape based on social learning principles, was used by 10 blood centers in presentations to 4970 high school students one week before school blood drives. At each school, some students saw the videotape and others attended a blood center's customary presentation. Students also completed a brief questionnaire assessing donation attitudes, donation history, and intent to donate. The videotape accounted for a relative increase of 18.7 percent in donations even when other factors were not controlled for. Results were analyzed with logistic models and showed a consistently positive effect over all models used. For students who had never donated, the estimated odds ratio for actual donation (videotape:control) was 1.528. When the model included both type of presentation and ethnicity, the relative increase in donation over that after the blood centers' usual presentation was 69.8 percent for first-time donors. Among previous donors considered alone, the effect on donation was not significant. Whatever their donor history, students who viewed the videotape showed significantly more positive attitudes toward donation and had greater intention to donate than students who saw the blood centers' standard presentations. These results suggest that this videotape is a useful tool for recruitment of high school blood donors.  相似文献

The demand for blood products steadily increases. Concurrently, blood donor recruitment becomes more and more difficult. This study aimed to investigate effects of blood donation on blood donors, which could be helpful for blood donor recruitment and retention. In addition to cortisol measurements in saliva, three questionnaires quantifying mood (good/bad), vigilance (awake/tired), agitation (calm/nervous), actual strain and asking for donation-related effects perceived were distributed to 110 whole blood donors (DON). Results obtained were compared with 109 control subjects (CON) lacking the blood donation experience. Overall, 216 subjects completed the questionnaires. Sixty-eight percent of DON reported at least one effect perceived with blood donation. Exclusively, positive, negative or mixed effects were described by 26.5%, 23.5% and 17.6%, respectively. Among positive effects (i.e. physical/psychological well-being, feeling satisfied, happy, proud), no significant differences were observed between males and females (P = 0.07), whereas mixed or negative effects (i.e. vertigo, dizziness, tiredness, pain) were significantly (P = 0.03; P = 0.049) more associated with females. DON showed higher levels of well-being than CON as indicated by better mood (P = 0.004), higher vigilance (P = 0.015) and relaxation (P = 0.003). The latter even increased after donation with maximum values after 15 and 30 min. Despite significantly higher initial strain scores (P = 0.008), first-time donors maintained a better mood (P = 0.025) than repeat donors. DON showed a statistically better psychological well-being than CON, although the donation experience was perceived as stressful, especially for first-time donors. The results may facilitate donor recruitment and retention as blood donation may become less frightening and perhaps even attractive.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Committed repeat donors are vital to the continued success of blood collections, yet the effect of age of first-time (FT) donation on return behavior is poorly described. Sixteen-year-old donors are increasingly allowed to donate and have the highest rates of adverse events, which negatively impacts return behavior.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Annual cohorts of allogeneic FT donors from 2005 and 2006 were selected within the American Red Cross system and followed for 25 and 13 months, respectively. Return and total yield rates among different age groups were compared.
RESULTS: A total of 2.3 million FT donors from 2005 and 2006 gave 4.2 million donations during the study. Sixteen- to 19-year old FT donors made up 41% of the FT donor base in 2005 and 16-, 17-, 18-, and 19-year-olds, respectively, had initial return rates of 62, 52, 35, and 28% and yield rates of 2.0, 1.76, 1.51, and 1.41 over 13 months. Multivariate analysis of FT yield rates shows that younger (16 and 17 years) and older (50+ years) donors, males, blood group O donors, and those without any initial adverse reaction are most likely to return. Increasing severity of donor adverse reactions correlated with a reduction in yield and return rates.
CONCLUSION: FT 16-year-old donors had the highest return and yield rates despite the negative impact of increased adverse event rates. Donation at young age is critical to building a cadre of committed repeat donors but donor reactions must be addressed to ensure the donors' well-being and to sustain return behavior.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Donor retention is vital to blood collection agencies. Past research has highlighted the importance of early career behavior for long‐term donor retention, yet research investigating the determinants of early donor behavior is scarce. Using an extended Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), this study sought to identify the predictors of first‐time blood donors' early career retention. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: First‐time donors (n = 256) completed three surveys on blood donation. The standard TPB predictors and self‐identity as a donor were assessed 3 weeks (Time 1) and at 4 months (Time 2) after an initial donation. Path analyses examined the utility of the extended TPB to predict redonation at 4 and 8 months after initial donation. RESULTS: The extended TPB provided a good fit to the data. Post‐Time 1 and 2 behavior was consistently predicted by intention to redonate. Further, intention was predicted by attitudes, perceived control, and self‐identity (Times 1 and 2). Donors' intentions to redonate at Time 1 were the strongest predictor of intention to donate at Time 2, while donors' behavior at Time 1 strengthened self‐identity as a blood donor at Time 2. CONCLUSION: An extended TPB framework proved efficacious in revealing the determinants of first‐time donor retention in an initial 8‐month period. The results suggest that collection agencies should intervene to bolster donors' attitudes, perceived control, and identity as a donor during this crucial post–first donation period.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Vasovagal reactions occur in a small, but significant number of blood donors. These reactions may decrease return donation and disrupt blood collection activities. The purpose of this study was to define the contributory role of sex, age, weight, blood pressure, and pulse in vasovagal reactions with syncope in blood donors. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A retrospective case-control study involved 1890 blood donors with syncope from three large United States blood centers during 1994 and 1995. Case controls and random population controls were used in a logistic regression analysis to determine the significance of individual variables to syncopal reactions. RESULTS: Female donors, young donors, first-time donors, low-weight donors, and donors with low predonation blood pressure had higher absolute donation reaction rates than other donors. When each variable was adjusted for other variables by regression analysis, age, weight, and donation status (first-time or repeat donor) were significant (p<0.0001), and sex, predonation blood pressure, and predonation pulse were not. The most important variables, in descending order, were age, weight, and donation status (first-time or repeat donor). CONCLUSIONS: Donation-related vasovagal syncopal reactions are a multifactorial process determined largely by age, weight, and first-time donor status.  相似文献

BackgroundHigh-intensity donation is a risk factor for iron deficiency in blood donors. Interdonation intervals for whole blood (WB) donation and double unit red blood cell apheresis (2RBC) vary among countries. We retrospectively evaluated the course of haemoglobin (Hb) and ferritin values in men regularly donating WB 4 times a year or 2RBC twice a year (i.e., maximal frequency) over a period of 48 months.MethodsData of male donors with 16 WB or 8 2RBC consecutive donations were analysed. The minimum Hb levels for WB donation and 2RBC apheresis (collection of 360 mL RBC) were 135 and 140 g/L, respectively. There was no lower limit set for ferritin, and no iron was substituted.ResultsWe identified 294 WB (mean age 53 years, SD 11) and 151 2RBC donors (mean age 48 years, SD 9) who donated at a mean interval of 97 (SD 18) and 201 days (SD 32), respectively, between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2013. At baseline, Hb and ferritin values were lower in WB donors compared to 2RBC donors, with a mean Hb of 153 g/L (SD 13) versus 159 g/L (SD 8) and a mean ferritin of 44 μg/L (SD 52) versus 73 μg/L (SD 56; p < 0.001 for both parameters), respectively. Ferritin was below 15 μg/L in 40 WB (14%) and in 4 (3%) 2RBC donors. In WB donors, the mean Hb levels at baseline versus last donation showed no significant difference (153 vs. 152 g/L, p = 0.068), whereas the mean ferritin levels decreased significantly (44 vs. 35 μg/L, p < 0.001). The 2RBC donor group displayed a statistically different decrease in both the mean Hb levels (158 vs. 157 g/L; p < 0.05) and the mean ferritin levels (73 vs. 66 μg/L; p = 0.052). The lowest Hb was measured at the 11th WB donation (152 g/L; p < 0.05) and at the 4th 2RBC apheresis (157 g/L; p < 0.05). There was no deferral due to low Hb at any time. The lowest ferritin was shown at the 4th WB (37 μg/L) and at the 3rd 2RBC donation (60 μg/L), respectively. At the last visit, ferritin was below 15 μg/L in 23 WB donors (8%) and in 2 2RBC donors (1%).ConclusionsHigh-intensity male donors with an interdonation interval of 12 weeks for WB donation and 24 weeks for 2RBC apheresis maintain acceptable Hb levels and, after an initial decline, stable ferritin levels despite ongoing blood donation.  相似文献
