Cancrum oris in HIV infected children in Lesotho: report of two cases

Cancrum Oris (Noma) has been known to mankind since time immemorial. Its public health importance is lately being realised especially in Africa, where majority of the cases occur. It affects those whose immune systems are compromised and thus, it is no wonder that it is being reported in HIV infected individuals. This development could have serious implications regarding the impact of the HIV pandemic globally and in particular the African region where poverty is rife.     

Plunging ranula: a report of two cases

Plunging ranula, a rare differential diagnosis of cervicofacial masses is presented in two Nigerian patients. The authors highlight the pathophysiology and treatment methods of this condition. It is suggested that clinicians be aware of the various modes of presentation and natural history of the disease to facilitate prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment.     

Glomus tympanicum: a report of two cases

Two cases of glomus tympanium tumor of the middle ear stage 'type A' according to Fisch classification, are presented due to their rarity in this part of the world. These tumors were excised by end aural tympanotomy approach and there has been no recurrence in both patients to date.     

Thoracic endometriosis: a report of two cases

We describe two patients with recurrent hemopneumothorax associated with pelvic endometriosis. The first patient a 37-year-old nulliparous lady with recurrent bilateral hemopneumothorax. She had a past history endometriosis years earlier. Laparoscopy and biopsy confirmed widespread endometriosis including in the omentum. Recurrence of the hemopneumothorax stopped after danazol therapy suggesting thoracic endometriosis as the cause of hemopneumothorax. The second lady is 47-years old with 2 children. She first presented with hemopneumothorax associated with menstrual period but ultrasound of pelvis did not reveal evidence of endometriosis. However, when she presented with a second episode of hemopneumothorax one year later, she was confirmed to have endometriosis and no further recurrence after treatment with Gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue.     

Chordoid meningioma: a report of two cases

Although meningiomas are common rumors in adults, the chordoid variant is very rare. According to the World Health Organization Classification of Tumors of the Nervous System （Lyon, 2000）,chordoid meningioma together with another rare variant, lymphoplasmacyterich meningioma, usually contain abundant lymphoplasmacytic infiltration, and are associated even with hematological abnormalities, especially in young adults. Few cases of chordoid meningioma have been reported in detail until Couce and his colleagues reported a sizable series of forty-two cases. Even then, the clinical and pathological features of these tumors were not well characterized, because of variations in different papers. In the present article, we report two adult patients with chordoid meningioma.     

Bruns-Garland综合征——附2例报道

目的:讨论Bruns-Garland综合征的临床表现及诊断.方法:对2例Bruns-Garland综合征进行临床及辅助检查资料分析.结果:Bruns-Garland综合征好发于2型糖尿病老年患者,表现为慢性、亚急性起病的下肢近端肌萎缩、疼痛、无力.辅助检查没有特异性.结论:Bruns-Garland综合征容易误诊,通过仔细询问病史及体格检查并结合辅助检查,排除其它疾病后可以在疾病的早期阶段确诊.     

Perforated duodenal diverticulum: a report of two cases

Perforation is a rare complication of congenital duodenal diverticula. The case histories of 2 patients are reported. Operative treatment to excise the diverticulum and close the defect in the duodenum and to drain associated sepsis is required.
