Sialadenitis mimicking metastatic thyroid carcinoma

In the post-thyroidectomy patient who has received I-131 ablation for thyroid carcinoma, focal uptake on repeat total body images is usually interpreted as being indicative of functioning thyroid metastases. The differential of focal I-131 activity in such a patient has been described. This report adds to the differential by presenting a case of benign sialadenitis that caused focal neck uptake a year after ablation therapy with I-131.     

Intracranial adenoid cystic carcinoma mimicking meningioma: report of two cases

Two cases of intracranial adenoid cystic carcinoma mimicking meningioma are reported. In one, MRI showed not only a homogeneously enhancing extra-axial tumour attached to the dura mater of the posterior cranial fossa, but also surrounding dural enhancement, the dural tail sign. In the second, CT demonstrated a well-demarcated enhancing extra-axial tumour, indistinguishable from a sphenoid ridge meningioma extending into the orbit. The neuroradiological features of intracranial adenoid cystic carcinoma may thus closely resemble those of meningioma.     

Bone metastasis of glandular cardiac myxoma mimicking a metastatic carcinoma

Skeletal metastasis from a cardiac myxoma is rare. We describe an extremely unusual case of a cardiac myxoma metastasing to the femur in a 46-year-old female presenting with pain in the right hip. Radiographs showed an expansile lytic lesion with pathological fracture involving the neck and proximal shaft of the right femur. Histology revealed features of cardiac myxoma with heterologous glandular elements, which was initially mistaken for a metastatic mucin-secreting adenocarcinoma.     

Vertebral hemangioma mimicking a metastatic bone lesion in well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma

The authors report a case of abnormal accumulation of I-131 in a thoracic vertebra in a patient with a well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma. The presumptive diagnosis was metastatic bone disease. Further diagnostic work-up confirmed a benign bone lesion. Bone metastasis, when shown on I-131 whole-body scintigraphy, usually supports a change in the staging and therapeutic approach to a patient with thyroid carcinoma. The authors believe that, although an infrequent lesion, the differential diagnosis of abnormal accumulation of I-131 in the body of a vertebra in patients with well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma should raise the possibility of a benign hemangioma. Complete work-up of the suggested bone metastatic lesion should be performed before tumor restaging and I-131 therapy is recommended.     

Case report: Jejuno-jejunal invagination from metastatic renal cell carcinoma

Jejuno-jejunal invagination caused by metastatic renal cell carcinoma is a rare entity in the literature. We report a case of metastatic renal cell carcinoma that led to jejuno-jejunal invagination, which was diagnosed by multidedector CT examination.
