Amid the childhood obesity epidemic, understanding how organized sports participation contributes to meeting physical activity recommendations in children is important. Anthropometrics were measured in children (n = 111; 68% female, 9.1 ± 0.8 yr) before one 50-min soccer match. Time spent at different physical activity intensity levels was examined using Actigraph accelerometers. 49% of the match time was spent in sedentary activity (25.4 ± 5.7 min), while 33% of the match (16.9 ± 4.7 min) was spent in moderate-to-vigorous activity (MVPA; p < .001). 22.5% of the children were overweight/obese and spent more time in sedentary activity (+3.2 ± 1.2 min; p < .05) and less time in MVPA (-3.0 ± 1.0 min; p < .01) compared with the normal weight children. These data demonstrate that playing an organized sport such as soccer only meets a portion (~25%) of the 60 min of MVPA recommended and even less of this recommendation is met by overweight/obese children.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo determine the associations between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), adolescent screen time, and physical activity during the early COVID-19 pandemic.MethodsData (2016–2020) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study were analyzed. Linear regression analyses estimated associations between ACE score and screen time and physical activity in May 2020, adjusting for potential confounders.ResultsOf the 6749 adolescent respondents primarily aged 12–13, 81.6% reported a history of one ACE or more. In adjusted models, a higher ACE score was significantly associated with greater hours per day of screen time, with youth with ≥4 ACEs associated with 2.3 more hours of screen time per day compared to youth with 0 ACEs. In addition, the adjusted models found that a higher ACE score was associated with lower physical activity; youth with ≥4 ACEs averaged 0.8 fewer hours per week of physical activity and 0.5 fewer days per week of 60 minutes of physical activity compared to youth with 0 ACEs. Gender and race were also significantly associated with changes in screen time and physical activity.ConclusionsACEs are associated with higher adolescent sedentary behaviors, particularly greater screen time, during the early COVID-19 pandemic (May 2020). Clinicians caring for youth exposed to trauma in the postpandemic environment should explore screen time and physical activity behaviors.  相似文献

This study examined the contributions of home, school, and neighborhood factors related to youth physical activity (PA). Adolescents (ages 12-18; N = 137) and parents of younger children (ages 5-11; N = 104) from three US metropolitan areas completed surveys. Youth PA was estimated from six items assessing overall physical activity. Bivariate analyses between environment factors and PA were significant correlations in each environmental setting for adolescents (r's:0.16-0.28), but for parents of children, only for the home and neighborhood settings (r's: 0.14-0.39). For adolescents, pieces of equipment at home, family recreation membership, equipment at school, and neighborhood aesthetics explained 15.8% of variance in PA. For younger children (based on parent report), pieces of equipment at home, neighborhood traffic safety, walking/cycling facilities, and street connectivity explained 21.4% of the variance in PA. Modifiable factors like increasing access to equipment at home and school, and improving neighborhood aesthetics may impact youth PA. To optimize explanation of youth PA, factors from multiple environments need to be considered.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Health recommendations are for preadolescent children to have daily school physical education (PE) classes that engage children in moderate to vigorous physical activity at least 50% of class time. OBJECTIVE: To observe activity of children in PE classes in third grades across 10 different sites. DESIGN: Observational study. SETTING: Six hundred eighty-four elementary schools in 10 sites. SUBJECTS: A total of 814 children (414 boys, 400 girls; mean age, 9.0 years) enrolled in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development. METHODS: Each child was observed during 1 scheduled PE class. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: The SOFIT (System for Observing Fitness Instruction Time) observation method, a validated, heart rate observation system, yields levels of activity the child is engaged in as well as the lesson context, type of teacher, and location of the PE class. RESULTS: Children averaged 2.1 PE lessons per week, of 33 minutes each. Only 5.9% of children had daily PE. Children accrued 4.8 very active and 11.9 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per PE lesson, 15.0% and 37.0% of lesson time, respectively. Lesson length and number of minutes per week were similar for boys and girls; however, boys spent proportionately more PE time in very active and moderate to vigorous activity. This resulted in boys having a higher energy expenditure rate than girls. CONCLUSION: Children observed in this study received 25 min/wk of moderate to vigorous activity in school PE, falling far short of national recommendations.  相似文献

This study compares service use, perceived unmet needs, and expectations of providers of Latino and Euro-American families of children with disabilities enrolled in a Title V Program. Eighty-four families and 20 providers participated in open-ended, semistructured, and structured interviews. Latino families underused Title V services (p <.001). The Latino families were more likely to cite unmet needs in the following areas: an unresolved health problem (p <.05), rehabilitation therapy programs (p <.001), or need for more information or a support group (p <.001). The Euro-American families cited unmet needs in the following areas: lack of day care (p <.001), respite services (p <.001), recreational programs (p <.001), and home health aides (p <.007). Textual analysis of open interviews revealed that the two groups of families had different expectations of providers. Latino cultural values play a role in these differences, creating barriers for effectively communicating with providers and for meeting children's needs.  相似文献

The study investigated associations between selected physical activity correlates among 299 adolescents (90 boys, age 12-14 years) from 3 English schools. Physical activity was assessed by self-report and accelerometry. Correlates represented biological, predisposing, and demographic factors as described in the Youth Physical Activity Promotion Model. Boys engaged in more self-reported (p < .01) and accelerometer assessed physical activity than girls (p = .02). Positive associations between sex (male), BMI, Perceived PE Ability, Perceived PE Worth, number of enrolled students, and physical activity outcomes were evident (p < .05). School-based physical activity promotion should emphasize sex-specific enhancement of students' perceived PE competence and enjoyment.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: A randomized controlled pilot study to test the hypothesis that increasing preschool children's outdoor free play time increases their daily physical activity levels. METHODS: Physical activity was assessed by accelerometers for four consecutive school days in thirty-two Latino children (3.6+/-0.5 years) attending a preschool for low-income families. After two days of baseline physical activity assessment, participants were randomly assigned to an intervention (RECESS; n =17) or control (CON; n =15) group. The RECESS group received two additional 30-minute periods of outdoor free play time per day for two days. The CON group followed their normal classroom schedule. Between group differences in physical activity variables were tested with a Wilcoxon rank-sum test. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences between groups in changes from baseline in average total daily (CON, 48.2+/-114.5; RECESS, 58.2+/-74.6) and during school day (CON, 64.6+/-181.9; RECESS, 59.7+/-79.1) counts per minute, or total daily (CON, 0.4+/-1.3; RECESS, 0.3+/-0.8) and during school day (CON, 0.6+/-2.1; RECESS, 0.5+/-0.8) percent of time spent in moderate to vigorous physical activity. CONCLUSIONS: Substantially increasing preschoolers' outdoor free play time did not increase their physical activity levels.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo describe middle school student attitudes about school drinking fountains, investigate whether such attitudes are associated with intentions to drink water at school, and determine how intentions relate to overall water intake.MethodsStudents (n = 3211) in 9 California middle schools completed surveys between 2009 and 2011. We used multivariate linear regression, adjusting for school sociodemographic characteristics, to examine how attitudes about fountains (5-point scale; higher scores indicating more positive attitudes) were associated with intentions to drink water at school and how intentions to drink water at school were related to overall water intake.ResultsMean age of students was 12.3 (SD = 0.7) years; 75% were Latino, 89% low income, and 39% foreign born. Fifty-two percent reported lower than recommended overall water intake (<3 glasses/day), and 30% reported that they were unlikely or extremely unlikely to drink water at school. Fifty-nine percent reported that school fountains were unclean, 48% that fountain water does not taste good, 33% that fountains could make them sick, 31% that it was not okay to drink from fountains, and 24% that fountain water is contaminated. In adjusted analyses, attitudes about school drinking fountains were related to intentions to drink water at school (β = 0.41; P < .001); intentions to drink water at school were also associated with overall water intake (β = 0.20; P < .001).ConclusionsStudents have negative attitudes about school fountains. To increase overall water intake, it may be important to promote and improve drinking water sources not only at school but also at home and in other community environments.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to identify factors associated with the physical activity in young children. STUDY DESIGN: Participants were 214 children (aged 3-5 years) enrolled in 10 childcare centers who were monitored for physical activity with an accelerometer during 2 continuous days (48 hours). Mean daily activity counts, activity counts between 9 AM and 5 PM, and percentage of time spent in vigorous activity were determined. The factors investigated were age, childcare center, season, sex, body mass index (BMI), history of preterm birth, participation in organized activities, parental BMI, and parental educational level. Regression analyses were used to identify factors associated with each of the activity measures. RESULTS: A statistical model including sex, history of preterm birth, childcare center, and father's BMI accounted for 22%, 37%, and 23% of the variance in total daily counts, counts between 9 AM and 5 PM, and percentage of time spent in daily vigorous activity, respectively. Childcare center was the highest individual predictor of activity. Boys were more active than girls in all activity measures except counts between 9 AM and 5 PM. Children born preterm were less active than children born at term, and high activity levels in the child were associated with a low BMI in fathers. CONCLUSION: The findings indicate that sex, history of preterm birth, childcare center, and father's BMI influence the daily physical activity of young children.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Obesity and poor physical fitness constitute a health problem affecting an increasing number of children. Causes include a pervasive "toxic" environment that facilitates increased caloric intake and reduced physical activity. An effective strategy for prevention and treatment of childhood obesity likely includes a collaborative effort in the school setting. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a school-based fitness program can improve body composition, cardiovascular fitness level, and insulin sensitivity in overweight children. DESIGN: Fifty overweight middle school children with a body mass index (BMI) above the 95th percentile for age were randomized to lifestyle-focused, fitness-oriented gym classes (treatment group) or standard gym classes (control group) for 9 months. Children underwent evaluation of fasting insulin and glucose levels, body composition by means of dual energy absorptiometry, and maximum oxygen consumption (V0(2)max) treadmill testing at baseline (before the school year) and at end of the school year. SETTINGS: Rural middle school and an academic children's hospital. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Baseline test results for cardiovascular fitness, body composition, and fasting insulin and glucose levels. RESULTS: At baseline, there were no differences between groups before intervention (values for age, 12 +/- 0.5 years [all results, mean +/- SD]; BMI [calculated as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters], 31.0 +/- 3.7; percentage of body fat, 36.5% +/- 4.6%; lean body mass, 41.4 +/- 8.6 kg; and V0(2)max, 31.5 +/- 5.1 mL/kg per minute). Compared with the control group, the treatment group demonstrated a significantly greater loss of body fat (loss, -4.1% +/- 3.4% vs -1.9% +/- 2.3%; P = .04), greater increase in cardiovascular fitness (V0(2)max, 2.7 +/- 2.6 vs 0.4 +/- 3.3 mL/kg per minute; P<.001), and greater improvement in fasting insulin level (insulin level, -5.1 +/- 5.2 vs 3.0 +/- 14.3 microIU/mL [-35.4 +/- 36.1 vs 20.8 +/- 99.3 pmol/L]; P = .02). CONCLUSIONS: Children enrolled in fitness-oriented gym classes showed greater loss of body fat, increase in cardiovascular fitness, and improvement in fasting insulin levels than control subjects. The modification to the school physical education curriculum demonstrates that small but consistent changes in the amount of physical activity has beneficial effects on body composition, fitness, and insulin levels in children. Partnering with school districts should be a part of a public health approach to improving the health of overweight children.  相似文献

ObjectiveParticipating in physical activity (PA) is essential for children's proper development. Promoting physical activity from early school years is considered a highly important prevention task for good health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of PA and sedentary behavior of children and adolescents aged 6–17 years attending primary and junior high schools in Wroclaw, Lower Silesia, Poland. The study assessed the frequency of various forms of PA and sedentary behavior in children and adolescents. The age differences in PA and sedentary behavior in the cohort studied was also analyzed.DesignSurvey study to assess children's and adolescents’ physical activity and sedentary behavior were based on a parent-reported questionnaire.ParticipantsA total of 2913 children and adolescents aged 6–17 years (average age, 11.38 years) from Wroclaw, Poland, who participated in a pro-health campaign “Let's Get the Kids Moving.” This project promotes a healthy lifestyle among primary and middle school students.ResultsThe frequency of physical activity significantly decreased as children grew older (p < 0.0001). As many as 18.6% of adolescents 13–17 years old undertook the recommended level of physical activity less than once a week. Time spent in front of the television or computer by pupils in group 3 was longer than in younger children (p < 0.0001). Nearly 19% of adolescents (13–17 years old) spent 5 h or more daily in a sitting position in front of the television or computer on weekends.ConclusionsPolish children and adolescents do not spend the recommended level of time on physical activity and spend excessive time in front of the television and other electronic devices. The level of physical activity decreases as the number of hours spent in a sitting position increases with increasing age. Actions should be taken to avoid the long-term consequences of these behaviors.  相似文献

Aim: To objectively measure levels of physical activity in children, following treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). Methods: Nineteen children who had completed treatment for ALL 6 months–5 years prior to study enrolment wore an accelerometer for 2 weekdays and 2 weekend days. Results: The children spent an average of 141 ± 74 min/day engaged in moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), an amount similar to that previously documented in healthy children. Only three of the 19 subjects averaged less MVPA than the recommended amount (at least 60 min/day). MVPA levels were significantly higher on weekdays than weekend days (P= 0.006). Overall, boys engaged in significantly more MVPA than girls (P= 0.029). MVPA time was negatively correlated with age (r =?0.80) and age at diagnosis (r =?0.87). No trend between MVPA and time off treatment or body mass index was identified. Conclusions: Survivors of childhood ALL appear to be engaging in similar amounts of MVPA as those of the healthy children and are meeting recommended levels of physical activity.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Although adolescence is a time when physical activity levels decline, few interventions have targeted high school-aged girls in the school setting. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of a life skills-oriented physical activity intervention for increasing overall physical activity in high school-aged girls. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Baltimore magnet high school. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 221 ninth-grade girls, 83.0% of whom were African American. Intervention Participants were randomized to an 8-month physical intervention conducted in physical education class or to a standard physical education class (control). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Self-reported estimated daily energy expenditure (physical activity), self-reported sedentary activities (television viewing and computer or Internet use), cardiorespiratory fitness, and selected cardiovascular disease risk factors. RESULTS: Intervention classes spent 46.9% of physical education class time in moderate to vigorous activity compared with 30.5% of time for control classes (P<.001). There were no significant between-treatment group differences for mean daily energy expenditure (P = .93), moderate-intensity energy expenditure (P = .77), or hard to very hard energy expenditure (P = .69). The proportion of participants who spent 3 or more hours viewing television during school days declined from 22.3% to 17.0% in the intervention group, but remained at 26.7% for the control group (P = .03). Both groups improved their cardiorespiratory fitness (P<.001). CONCLUSION: A life skills-oriented physical education curriculum may need to be combined with other approaches to increase the magnitude of effects on physical activity behavior in predominantly African American high school-aged girls.  相似文献

This paper addresses and compares the impact of organized, more intensive sports participation with lower intensity participation among high school student-athletes. Subjects included 770 high school students who reported being active in organized school sports. Mental health, physical health, and coping skills were assessed as indicated by factor scores derived from the Juvenile Wellness and Health Survey (JWHS-76). Results indicate that compared to students who were less active, competitive sports participation was associated with fewer mental health problems, fewer total risks, and fewer eating and dietary problems for both girls and boys. These results provide initial support for the association between youth participation in competitive sports and mental health.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To describe the interrelationships between books and toys in the home, parent-child interaction, and child development at 21 months among low-income Latino children. METHODS: Latino mother-infant dyads enrolled in a level 1 nursery and infants were followed to 21 months. The subjects consisted of the control group of a larger intervention study. At 6 and 18 months, the number of books and toys in the home and the frequency of reading aloud were measured by the StimQ. At 21 months, child cognitive and language development and parent-child interaction were assessed by the Bayley Mental Development Index (MDI), the Preschool Language Scale-3 (PLS-3), and the Caregiver-Child Interaction Rating Scale, respectively. Eligibility for early intervention (EI) services was determined on the basis of the MDI and PLS-3. RESULTS: Data were obtained for 46 (63.0%) of 73 at 21 months. In multiple regression analysis, books provided at 18 months predicted both cognition (semipartial correlation [sr] = .49, P= .001) and receptive language (sr = .37, P= .02), whereas toys provided at both 6 and 18 months predicted 21-month receptive language (sr = .40, P= .01; sr = .32, P= .047, respectively). Reading aloud by parents > or =4 days a week was associated with decreased EI eligibility (adjusted odds ratio = 0.16, 95% confidence interval 0.03-0.99). CONCLUSIONS: Reading aloud and provision of toys are associated with better child cognitive and language development as well as with decreased likelihood of EI eligibility.  相似文献

Regular physical activity has both short- and long-term health benefits in adults. No study has investigated childhood determinants of adult physical activity patterns, however. In a nonconcurrent prospective study, the physical activity levels of 453 young men, 23 to 25 years of age, were compared with their physical fitness test scores as children (10 to 11 years of age and 15 to 18 years of age). The physically active adults had significantly better childhood physical fitness test scores than did the inactive adults. In 224 children, 2 years of fitness test results were available. The risk of physical inactivity in young adulthood was linearly related to the number of low scores on the 548.6-m (600-yd) run and sit-ups tests as children (P less than .001). In stepwise multivariate discriminant analysis, the childhood 548.6-m run score was the best discriminator between currently physically active and inactive adults. Reported parental encouragement of exercise, level of education, participation in organized sports after high school, and reported spousal encouragement of exercise also contributed significantly to the discriminant function. These results demonstrate that physical fitness testing in boys facilitates the identification of those at increased risk of becoming physically inactive young adults.  相似文献

In order to begin to compensate for a lack of data on the effects of athletic participation in the development of adolescent mental health patterns, as well as to assess general health of the adolescent population, the Juvenile Wellness and Health Inventory (JWHS-76) was administered to 1,769 high school students. Our results indicate that sports participation is associated with self-reported lower total risk scores, mental and physical health benefits, and an increased risk of injury. This suggests a positive role for organized sports participation in youth populations. Prospective studies are needed to assess the impact of different sports, mounting performance pressure, and transition into collegiate levels of participation.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe role of neighborhood physical activity resources on childhood physical activity level is increasingly examined in pediatric obesity research. We describe how availability of physical activity resources varies by individual and block characteristics and then examine its associations with physical activity levels of Latino and black children in East Harlem, New York City.MethodsPhysical activity resource availability by individual and block characteristics were assessed in 324 children. Availability was measured against 4 physical activity measures: average weekly hours of outdoor unscheduled physical activity, average weekly metabolic hours of scheduled physical activity, daily hours of sedentary behavior, and daily steps.ResultsPhysical activity resource availability differed by race/ethnicity, caregiver education, and income. Presence of one or more playgrounds on a child's block was positively associated with outdoor unscheduled physical activity (odds ratio [OR] = 1.95, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.11–3.43). Presence of an after-school program on a child's block was associated with increased hours of scheduled physical activity (OR = 3.25, 95% CI 1.41–7.50) and decreased sedentary behavior (OR = 3.24, 95% CI 1.30–8.07). The more resources a child had available, the greater the level of outdoor unscheduled physical activity (P for linear trend = .026).ConclusionsNeighborhood physical activity resource availability differs by demographic factors, potentially placing certain groups at risk for low physical activity level. Availability of select physical activity resources was associated with reported physical activity levels of East Harlem children but not with objective measures of physical activity.  相似文献
