Aseptic necrosis of the hamate: a case report.

The case of a 25-year-old man with osteonecrosis of the hamate is reported. He had pain and swelling in his right wrist. The diagnosis was accomplished with plain radiographs as well as with MRI. The case was treated surgically that included resection of the necrotic bone. The occured cavity was filled with autogenous cancellous bone graft. In addition, capito-hamate arthrodesis was performed. Histopathological examination following the operation demonstrated avascular necrosis of the hamate. The arthrodesis was obtained four months after the operation.     

Scaphocapitolunate arthrodesis for idiopathic avascular necrosis of the capitate: a case report

Idiopathic avascular necrosis of the capitate is a disorder of unknown etiology that causes wrist pain and limitation of function. Many different treatments have been presented in the literature with varying clinical results and levels of patient satisfaction. We present a case of a 23-year-old woman successfully treated with scaphocapitolunate arthrodesis.     

Nonunion of the capitate: a case report

A patient with nonunion of the capitate presented for treatment with a painful, snapping wrist. Grafting was successful in obtaining union of the fracture and relief of symptoms.     

Volar capitate dislocation: a case report

We present a rare injury involving a volar dislocation of the distal capitate with secondary median nerve compression. The injury was not recognized on the initial radiographs resulting in a delayed diagnosis and treatment. A satisfactory outcome was achieved following open reduction and internal fixation via dorsal and palmar approaches. This case illustrates the importance of careful review of radiographs for evidence of intercarpal injuries.     

Osteoid osteoma of the capitate: a case report

An osteoid osteoma of the capitate in a patient with Marfan's syndrome is described. Considerable difficulty was encountered in establishing the diagnosis.     

Impaction-fracture of the capitate and lunate: a case report

We report a 15-year-old girl who underwent a mid-carpal fusion for undiagnosed impaction-fractures of the capitate, lunate, and triquetrum after a fall on her outstretched left hand in a dorsiflexed and radially deviated position. The joint was dis-impacted, and the height of the lunate was restored using a cortical bone graft. The damaged proximal capitate articular surface was decorticated to facilitate fusion, as was the lunotriquetral articulation. Kirschner wires were inserted along the coronal plane. At the one-year follow-up, the patient had achieved a satisfactory range of motion and fusion of the capitate-lunate-triquetral articulations.     

Bilateral avascular necrosis of the capitate. A case report and a review of the literature

A case of bilateral avascular necrosis of the capitate is presented. A review of the literature has identified a clear-cut clinical syndrome. The aetiology and pathology of this syndrome is discussed and a new method of treatment is proposed.     

Spinal cord compression secondary to Gaucher's disease

A case of compression of the spinal cord and cauda equina secondary to collapse of the T-12 and L-3 vertebral bodies in a patient with type 1 Gaucher's disease is presented. Decompressive laminectomies were done at both the T-12 and L-3 levels with moderate improvement of the patient's neurologic findings. Histologic examinations confirmed the presence of Gaucher's cells in the bone. Review of the literature revealed only one previous report.

Ileo-anal pouch necrosis secondary to small bowel volvulus: A case report

Introduction  

Small bowel volvulus is a rare occurrence in the Western world and its occurrence after ileo-anal ouch formation is even rarer.     

Avascular necrosis of the capitate

Although a large portion of the capitate is supplied by a single nutrient vessel, avascular necrosis of the capitatum is a rare condition. Its etiology is not clear, but a number of factors are linked to its pathogenesis including: repetitive trauma, dorsal instability of the carpus, Gaucher disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, gout, and steroid use. A 24-year-old woman presented with right wrist pain of 12 months duration. She reported no major trauma and reported that her pain had begun during the third month of her pregnancy. She had a history of hyperemesis gravidarum treated with 2 to 4 mg/daily of prednisone during her pregnancy for 6 weeks. She had 70° extension and 45° flexion of her wrist. Radiographs showed a hypodense area at the capitate head and midcarpal joint arthritis. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated avascular necrosis of the capitate and midcarpal collapse at the lunocapitate joint. Lunocapitate fusion with a partial scaphoidectomy was performed. At final follow-up 28 months postoperatively, she had 60° of volar flexion, and 50° of dorsiflexion. She was pain free in the majority of her activities of daily living. A small dose of steroid use during pregnancy, even in a short period of time, is a potential risk for avascular necrosis of the capitate and patients with a gradual onset of wrist pain during pregnancy may need to be investigated further if symptoms are not resolved with basic nonoperative measures within a reasonable time frame.     

Dieterich's disease: avascular necrosis of the metacarpal head: a case report

The authors report a case of non-traumatic avascular necrosis of the third metacarpal head. This very rare condition is known as Dieterich's disease and has been associated with trauma, systemic lupus erythematosus and steroid use.     

Fractures of the scaphoid, capitate and triquetrum in a child: a case report

Carpal fractures in children are rare, especially with a combination of scaphoid, capitate, and triquetrum fractures. We report one such case in a 10-year-old boy who was successfully treated with Kirschner wires.
