Objectives: Métis, with a population of close to 390,000 people, are a culturally distinct and constitutionally recognized Aboriginal group in Canada that suffers from poorer overall health than non-Aboriginal Canadians. One important predictor of good health is physical activity. Guided by frameworks based on social and Aboriginal-specific determinants, we investigated the correlates of leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and active transportation (walking) among adult Métis, with a particular focus on how culturally specific variables were associated with these two types of activity. We also examined how demographic, geographic, socioeconomic and health-related factors were associated with physical activity.

Design: We used data from Statistics Canada’s 2006 Aboriginal Peoples Survey and Métis Supplement to analyze the correlates of physical activity among Métis aged 20–64, using a series of logistic regression models.

Results: Having attended a Métis cultural event in the past year was positively associated with LTPA, as was a high level of spirituality. Similarly, those who had attended a cultural event in the last year were more likely to report a high level of active transportation. Speaking an Aboriginal language and being a member of a Métis organization were not independently associated with the two types of physical activity. Self-perceived health, being male and household income were other correlates positively associated with LTPA, whereas age, body mass index and smoking were negatively associated with this type of activity. Active transportation was positively associated with self-perceived health and being female, while negatively associated with age and body mass index.

Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that interventions aimed at increasing physical activity among adult Métis might be more successful if they are connected to cultural activities and spirituality. This research also suggests that demographic, socioeconomic and health-related factors are important considerations when designing initiatives to increase physical activity among adult Métis.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To review the existing research on physical activity and parenthood in order to establish direction for future research. METHOD: Articles were limited to English peer-reviewed journals, published from 1989 to 2007. Major findings from 25 independent samples were summarized based on common subtopics of: physical activity of parents compared to non-parents, physical activity barriers, employment and marital status, number of children, and theory-based work applied to parents. RESULTS: Parenthood and physical activity involvement showed a negative relationship (meta-analytic d=0.41 to 0.48, correcting for sampling error) when compared to non-parents. Mothers were generally less active than fathers. Associations were found between specific barriers and parental physical activity, but the relationship between physical activity and marital/employment status as well as number/age of children was inconsistent. Finally, the use of theoretical models applied to understanding early family development and physical activity has been limited. CONCLUSIONS: Parents with dependent children are clearly more inactive than non-parents and the topic has received disproportionably scant research considering the size of the effect. Current research has largely been focused on mothers, and has relied heavily on cross-sectional designs and self-report measures. Future work should focus on longitudinal designs across family development, gender and role interactions, and include social ecological frameworks and objective physical activity measurement.  相似文献

Physical activity has the potential to modulate appetite control by improving the sensitivity of the physiological satiety signalling system, by adjusting macronutrient preferences or food choices and by altering the hedonic response to food. There is evidence for all these actions. Concerning the impact of physical activity on energy balance, there exists a belief that physical activity drives up hunger and increases food intake, thereby rendering it futile as a method of weight control. There is, however, no evidence for such an immediate or automatic effect. Short (1-2 d)-term and medium (7-16 d)-term studies demonstrate that men and women can tolerate substantial negative energy balances of < or = 4 MJ energy cost/d when performing physical activity programmes. Consequently, the immediate effect of taking up exercise is weight loss (although this outcome is sometimes difficult to assess due to changes in body composition or fluid compartmentalization). However, subsequently food intake begins to increase in order to provide compensation for about 30% of the energy expended in activity. This compensation (up to 16 d) is partial and incomplete. Moreover, subjects separate into compensators and non-compensators. The exact nature of these differences in compensation and whether it is actually reflective of non-compliance with protocols is yet to be determined. Some subjects (men and women) performing activity with a cost of < or = 4 MJ/d for 14 d, show no change in daily energy intake. Conversely, it can be demonstrated that when active individuals are forced into a sedentary routine food intake does not decrease to a lower level to match the reduced energy expenditure. Consequently, this situation creates a substantial positive energy balance accompanied by weight gain. The next stage is to further characterize the compensators and non-compensators, and to identify the mechanisms (physiological or behavioural) that are responsible for the rate of compensation and its limits.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: While cross-sectional research indicates physical inactivity and poor diet tend to co-occur, there are limited longitudinal data on how interventions targeting one behavior affect other behaviors. The current investigation examined cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between health behaviors within the context of a physical activity (PA) intervention. METHODS: Sedentary women (n=280; mean age=47.1; 94.6% Caucasian) were enrolled in a randomized controlled PA trial comparing the effects of print-based, individually-tailored and gender-targeted PA interventions to a wellness/control condition. Women completed baseline, month 3, and month 12 assessments that included measures of PA and dietary behaviors. RESULTS: Participants in more advanced PA stages of change reported significantly greater fruits/vegetables consumption than participants in less advanced stages, although the relationships between diet and minutes of weekly activity were less pronounced. The tailored and targeted print-based PA interventions had no effect on fruit/vegetable intake, although significant reductions in fat intake were observed from baseline (M=31.24%) to month 3 (M=30.41%), p<0.03; and baseline to month 12 (M=30.36%), p<0.01. Changes in PA were not predictive of improvements in eating behaviors. CONCLUSIONS: Although fat intake decreased in the context of this PA intervention, fruit/vegetable intake remained unchanged. Also, PA did not serve as a gateway behavior for dietary improvements. In fact, improvements in activity were associated with increases rather than decreases in fat intake.  相似文献

Physical inactivity is a major public health problem, and compelling evidence suggests that it is a contributing factor in several chronic diseases and conditions. Recognition of the health and functional hazards of a sedentary way of life has led numerous groups to promulgate public health recommendations for physical activity. In this report, we review the evolution of physical activity recommendations, discuss reasons for differences in the recommendations, and provide a summary recommendation in an attempt to harmonize existing differences. Current public health recommendations for physical activity are for 30 min of moderate-intensity activity each day, which provides substantial benefits across a broad range of health outcomes for sedentary adults. This dose of exercise may be insufficient to prevent unhealthful weight gain for some persons who may need additional exercise or caloric restriction to minimize the likelihood of further weight gain. Persons who get 30 min of moderate-intensity exercise per day are likely to achieve additional health benefits if they exercise more. In addition to aerobic exercise, people should engage in resistance training and flexibility exercises at least twice a week, which will promote the maintenance of lean body mass, improvements in muscular strength and endurance, and preservation of function, all of which enable long-term participation in regular physical activity and promote quality of life.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Physical activity, in particular vigorous activity (i.e., > or =6 METs), lowers mortality from chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease (CVD). The 7-Day Physical Activity Recall (PAR), a self-administered activity log (LOG), and heart rate monitoring (HR) were used to quantify activity patterns among sedentary adults. We hypothesized that individuals in this population could accurately estimate the duration, but not the intensity, of their activity. METHODS: Sedentary adults (n = 94, 47.8 +/- 7.1 years) completed two PARs 1 week apart and underwent HR monitoring while completing a LOG for 1 day during the PAR assessment interval. RESULTS: The relationship between PARs (kcal. kg(-1). day(-1) ) was significant (r = 0.80, 95% CI 0.68-0.87) among individuals (n = 63) reporting "typical" activity patterns and among all individuals (n = 94) reporting "typical" and "not typical" activity patterns combined (r = 0.44, 95% CI 0.26-0.59). Quantity of moderate activity was greater (P = 0.0001) on PAR and LOG compared to that measured by HR. Quantity of hard (vigorous) activity was also greater (P = 0.019) on LOG compared to that measured by HR. CONCLUSIONS: Sedentary adults tend to overestimate the intensity of their activity, specifically for moderate activity. Furthermore, the aerobic capacity of our sedentary adult sample (about 7.3 METs) suggests that the definition of a threshold intensity level of activity necessary to reduce mortality from CVD should be reexamined, because a value of > or =6 METs appears to be too high in this population.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Despite significant health benefits of regular physical activity, over 60 percent of college women do not meet recommended physical activity guidelines to promote their health and health-related quality of life (HRQoL), a comprehensive construct including physical and psychosocial health functioning. The major purpose of this study was to examine the influences of individual (e.g., self-efficacy, enjoyment), social (e.g., family and friend support), and physical environmental factors (e.g., crime safety) on college women’s physical activity and HRQoL. Participants were 235 (Mean age = 21.0 years) college women from a public research university located in the southwest region of the United States. They completed validated surveys assessing their perceptions of physical activity, HRQoL, and social ecological factors during the spring semester of 2012. The findings of three multiple linear regressions, entering individual factors first, followed by social and physical environmental factors, revealed that self-efficacy and crime safety were significantly related to physical activity. For HRQoL-physical functioning, significant factors were self-efficacy, enjoyment, and crime safety. Enjoyment was the only factor related to HRQoL-psychosocial functioning. These findings indicated that physical activity professionals need to foster safe environments, enhance self-efficacy, and provide enjoyable activities to promote college women’s physical activity and HRQoL.  相似文献

Objective: To determine if overweight adolescent girls are more likely to overreport physical activity compared to normal-weight girls. Methods: Participation in physical activities and perceived intensity of activities were assessed from the previous day physical activity recall (PDPAR) in 1021 girls aged 11-14 years old (37% overweight). Daily minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) were measured using accelerometery. Results: Girls in the "at-risk for overweight" and "overweight" categories had 17.7% and 19.4% fewer minutes of MVPA per block reported on the PDPAR compared to normal-weight girls (P<0.05). Conclusions: Overweight adolescent girls tend to overreport their total amount of physical activity.  相似文献

We investigated whether physical activity (PA) correlates differed for 9–10 year-old British children living in urban, suburban and rural settings.We analysed cross-sectional data on 1653 children (SPEEDY study). Exposure variables were self-reported, whilst PA was measured using Actigraph accelerometers. Data were analysed using multilevel hierarchical regression models, stratified by home setting.PA levels did not differ by home setting. Boys, those of normal weight and those having a preference for PA had higher PA levels in all strata, but additional correlates were identified within each setting.These results highlight the potential importance of tailoring interventions to specific environmental and population strata.  相似文献

The phenomenon of maintenance of health-related physical activity is explored through an analysis of the underlying concepts and of the existing empirical evidence. The following targets were used for the analysis: (1) the concept of health-related physical activity, (2) the concept of maintenance, (3) common manifestations of maintenance in everyday living, (4) the promotional and behavioral characteristics of health-related physical activity, (5) the known determinants of free-living physical activity, and (6) intervention trials on physical activity in free-living groups. The analyses revealed the inherent resistance to adoption and maintenance of physical activity, particularly that of high-intensity and program-centered activities, the persistence, however, of many simple everyday routines and habits, the multiple determinants discovered for free-living physical activity and a few empirical demonstrations of the successful promotion of the maintenance of physical activity over a year or two. The promotion of the maintenance of health-related physical activity seems thus a distinct possibility provided that (1) the promotional situation is analyzed thoroughly, (2) the activity is chosen carefully with an emphasis on moderation in intensity and integration into the participant's life-style, (3) multiple promotional contacts are used, and (4) support from the participant's social and physical environment is provided. There is a need for more research on the maintenance of health-related physical activity using the stages of change models, behavior modification principles, self-control concepts, the concept of intrinsic motivation and the Relapse model. The method of analysis used here could apply to other health-related behaviors as well.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The standard methodological approach for evaluating social cognitive theories when predicting physical activity behavior is the passive prospective/longitudinal survey design. Although this design is logical, a cross-sectional design may be a cost-effective alternative if the relationships between social cognitive constructs and physical activity are relatively stable. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the utility of a concurrent measure of physical activity used in a cross-sectional design in comparison to the standard prospective measure. METHODS: This study included two 6-month prediction time-periods, between 1997 and 1998, for the purpose of analysis replication, and the theory of planned behavior, the transtheoretical model, protection motivation theory, and social cognitive theory as the models of interest in a population sample (N = 703). RESULTS: Results showed trivial (69% of tests; q < 0.10) to small (31% of tests; q = 0.11-0.18) differences in the correlations between social cognitive constructs and vigorous physical activity occur when using a cross-sectional or prospective design. The cross-sectional design estimated slightly larger coefficients than the prospective design. CONCLUSIONS: It appears that a measure of concurrent physical activity included in a cross-sectional design can act as a reasonable proxy measure of future behavior measured in a passive prospective/longitudinal design. These findings support the use of cross-sectional designs when researchers seek a standard correlational investigation of physical activity and social cognitive constructs with the possibility that coefficients may be slightly biased upwards.  相似文献
