The present study examined whether corneal air puff can be used as an unconditioned stimulus to elicit reliable classically conditioned heart rate (HR) responses in rabbits. The conditioned and unconditioned HR responses were assessed during Pavlovian conditioning with different intensities of paraorbital shock (2.7, 1.2, or 0.5 mA) or corneal air puff (18.3, 5.9, or 2.2 N/cm2) unconditioned stimuli (UCSs). Each experimental group was given one acquisition session during which an acoustic conditioned stimulus was paired with either the high, medium, or low intensity of a shock or air puff UCS. The results suggest that: a) HR is reliably conditioned with a high-intensity air puff UCS, and with medium- or high-intensity paraorbital shock stimuli; and b) only UCSs that elicit a tachycardiac unconditioned HR response reliably support HR conditioning. It was concluded that either air puff or paraorbital shock can serve as an effective UCS for HR conditioned responses.  相似文献

Lateral eye movers are subjects who consistently shift their gaze either leftward or rightward while reflecting on visuospatial or verbal questions. When reliably assessed, prevalent direction of gaze can be assumed as a valid index of hemispheric asymmetry. The present study evaluated discrimination of heartbeat (HB) and of spontaneous changes of finger temperature in 24 right-handed females reliably selected as lateral movers. Results replicate and extend previous findings by showing that left movers' superiority in HB discrimination is present also in females and concerns the perception of a different vascular function, that is, peripheral finger temperature. Differences between right movers and left movers were not due to activation level during the test or to body composition.  相似文献

Increasingly, there is a trend to measure brain activity in more ecologically realistic scenarios. Normally, the confines of the laboratory and sedentary tasks mitigate sources of electrical noise on EEG measurement. Moving EEG outside of the lab requires understanding of the impact of complex movements and activities on traditional EEG and ERP measures. Here, we recorded EEG with active electrodes while participants were either riding or sitting on a stationary bike in an electrical and sound‐attenuated chamber in the lab. Participants performed an auditory oddball task, pressing a button when they detected rare target tones in a series of standard frequent tones. We quantified both the levels of spectral, single‐trial baseline, and ERP baseline noise, as well as classic MMN/N2b and P3 ERP components measured during both biking and sitting still. We observed slight increases in posterior high frequency noise in the spectra, and increased noise in the baseline period during biking. However, morphologically and topographically similar MMN/N2b and P3 components were measured reliably while both biking and sitting. A quantification of the power to reliably measure ERPs as a function of the number of trials revealed slight increases in the number of trials needed during biking to achieve the same level of power. Taken in sum, our results confirm that classic ERPs can be measured reliably during biking activities in the lab. Future directions will employ these techniques outside the lab in ecologically valid situations.  相似文献

We have recorded from 306 neurons in the inferior olive of six alert cats. Most of the cats were trained to perform a simple task with the forelimb. We observed the neural responses to a wide variety of cutaneous and proprioceptive stimuli, as well as responses during spontaneous and learned active movements. Neurons responsive to somatosensory stimulation were found in all parts of the inferior olive, and they were roughly evenly divided between those responsive to cutaneous stimulation and those responsive to proprioceptive stimulation. In the dorsal accessory olive all neurons were responsive to somatosensory stimulation. In the medial accessory nucleus 88% and in the principal olive 74% of cells were responsive to somatosensory stimulation. Cells responsive to cutaneous stimulation usually had small receptive fields, commonly on the paw. These cells had low-threshold responses to one or more forms of cutaneous stimulation and typically fired one spike at the onset of the stimulus on 80% or more of stimulus applications. Cells responsive to proprioceptive stimulation most commonly responded to passive displacements of a limb. These cells were often very sensitive, responding to linear displacements of less than 1 cm in one specific direction. No cells in our sample responded reliably during active movement by the animal. Only 21% of cells responding to passive proprioceptive stimulation showed any modulation during active movement, and the modulation was weak. Likewise, cells responsive to cutaneous stimulation generally failed to respond when a similar stimulus was produced by an active movement by the animal. Exceptions to this were stimuli produced during exploratory movements or when the receptive field unexpectedly made contact with an object during active movement. Electrical stimulation applied in the inferior olive failed to evoke movements or to modify ongoing movement. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that inferior olivary neurons function as somatic event detectors responding particularly reliably to unexpected stimuli.  相似文献

Monkeys were trained to exert a maintained isometric pinch with the thumb and forefinger. This task reliably elicited a simultaneous cocontraction of the forearm muscles. The same monkeys were also taught to insert the open hand into a manipulandum, flex and extend the wrist 35 and 15 degrees, respectively, and maintain an isometric wrist position against a mechanical stop for 1 s. This second task comprised two conditions: a dynamic or movement phase and a static or isometric phase. Movement always involved a wrist displacement of 50 degrees. Although some forearm muscles demonstrated bidirectional activity during the wrist displacement phase, all the wrist and finger muscles were alternatively active in isometric flexion or extension. Of the neurons in the dentate and interposed nuclei that consistently changed discharge during repeated isometric prehension, over 90% (61/67) of the neurons increased activity during this cocontraction of forearm muscles. About 70% (47/67) of these same nuclear cells discharged with a reciprocal pattern of firing during alternating wrist flexion-extension movements. Forty-six neurons had sustained and reciprocal discharge during the maintained isometric wrist postures. No differences were seen between the activity patterns of dentate and interposed cells with respect to either the prehension task or the reciprocal wrist-movement task. The discharge frequency of some dentate and interpositus neurons could be correlated with prehensile force as well as velocity of wrist movement and torque developed by wrist muscles. Correlation coefficients were calculated between nuclear cell discharge and the amplitude of the surface EMGs of the flexors and extensors of the wrist and fingers during the wrist-movement task. Sixteen nuclear cells showed low-order, but reliably positive, correlations with one of the two forearm muscle groups (mean r = 0.33). In contrast, a sample of seven Purkinje cells recorded during the same task demonstrated low-order correlations that were negative in sign (mean r = -0.30) between discharge frequency and one of the two forearm EMGs.  相似文献

Moffitt's theory regarding two types of adolescent antisocial behavior was investigated using a prospective, longitudinal study of normal and abnormal development in a primarily low socioeconomic status, ethnically diverse sample. Results supported the presence of an early-onset/persistent (EOP) group and an adolescence-onset (AO) group. Groups were most reliably and significantly distinguished by indices of socioemotional history within the first 3 years, but no significant differences were found on early measures of temperament or neuropsychological functioning. EOPs scored significantly lower than other groups on measures of neuropsychological functioning only during late childhood and adolescence, suggesting that the declines in verbal functioning that have been so reliably found in this and other samples of early-starting antisocial adolescents are progressive and consequent to adverse experience. In adolescence, AOs were significantly more likely to report high levels of internalizing symptoms and life stress, suggesting that AO antisocial behavior is not a benign phenomenon. Implications of these findings for etiologic theories of adolescent antisocial behavior are discussed.  相似文献

In Experiment One, phentolamine (PTA), an alpha-adrenergic blocker, was injected in rats at doses of 0, 50, 100, 200, and 300 micrograms/kg following a 4-hr fast. Measurement of food intake 1-hr postinjection revealed that 300 micrograms/kg PTA reduced food intake. Experiment Two evaluated the potential aversiveness of 300 micrograms/kg PTA. Four-hour fasted rats were adapted to a milk diet as the only food source during a 1-hr intake measurement period. After the 15-day adaptation period, three separate groups of animals (n = 8 per group) received the milk with cherry flavoring added and infections of either 1% body weight 0.9 NaCl, isosmotic LiCl or 300 micrograms/kg PTA. Only those subjects that had received LiCl injections developed a reliable aversion to the cherry-flavored milk. The final experiments subdivided the 1-hr feeding period into three 20-min segments and, in separate animals, food intake or plasma insulin and glucose changes were assessed. The animals were assigned to one of two groups receiving either 300 micrograms/kg PTA or equivolume 0.9% NaCl. PTA-injected subjects showed an immediate modest enhancement of insulin release during the first 20-min feeding segment following injection, compared to controls, while blood glucose levels decreased but never differed reliably between groups. Food intake was reliably suppressed in the second and third 20-min segments for the PTA-injected rats. We advance that PTA by enhancing glucose clearance may be reducing ingestion.  相似文献

Holes in latex gloves can be reliably detected by commercially available electronic devices. The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of an electronic glove hole detection device using latex gloves to that of neoprene, vinyl, and nitrile latex-free gloves. The electronic hole detection device accurately detected holes in the latex gloves during the 2-h study. In contrast, the latex-free gloves were immediately conductive of electricity in the absence of holes. Consequently, electronic glove hole detection devices cannot be reliably used with latex-free gloves.  相似文献

Since treatment with Freund's complete adjuvant in chickens with congenital avian leukosisvirus infection results in severe hypergammaglobulinaemia, it was of interest to determine how various means of chemical bursectomy affected such animals. Testosterone injected during the embryonic period or cyclophosphamide administered neonatally were, alone, relatively ineffectual in suppressing the response to influenza virus or production of natural rabbit haemagglutinins, nor did these treatments reliably depress IgG or IgM levels. However, the combination of both testosterone and cyclophosphamide completely suppressed antibody responses to the antigens and resulted in animals with serum immunoglobulin levels 10-(4)-10-(5) that of untreated hypergammaglobulinaemic controls.  相似文献

The role of physiological arousal is central to theories about the onset and maintenance of gambling behaviours including problem gambling. The range of possibilities suggested include tonic underarousal and phasic abnormalities such as hypersensitivity to reward and/or reduced sensitivity to negative consequences associated with losses. Among the various types of gambling, electronic gambling machines (EGMs) are associated with the large majority of gambling related problems. The demonstration that physiological changes associated with rapidly occurring win and loss events during electronic gambling can be reliably captured is fundamental to further progress in the psychophysiology of gambling. The current study monitored electrodermal and cardiac activities of twenty-four healthy participants to event outcomes (losses, fake wins, small wins and big wins) during a task on a real EGM. The results demonstrated that it is possible to reliably capture the profile of physiological changes as they occurred in real time to the many different win and loss events during electronic gambling. Relative to baseline levels, win events produced significant increases in skin conductance levels, (but not in HR) whereas loss events produced no significant changes. The study has important applications for further experimental and clinical research.  相似文献

This study analyzed the responses of rats with electrolytic lesions of the globi pallidi or of three different striatal regions to various regulatory challenges. Pallidal lesions abolished drinking during intracellular dehydration, feeding during glucoprivation (2-DG), and sodium appetite normally induced by desoxycorticosterone. Striatal lesions in the central part of the structure sparing the pallidum impaired feeding during 2-DG and the induction of sodium appetite, but did not alter drinking produced by intracellular dehydration. Rats with anterior or posterior striatal damage were not reliably different from controls on any of these measure. Animals with pallidal, central, and posterior striatal damage had abnormally low water intakes during food deprivation. the number of regulatory impairments found was related to the duration of aphagia initially following surgery. These results suggest that components of the lateral hypothalamic syndrome can be produced by lesions along the nigrostriatal dopamine trajectory which spare hypothalamic tissue, and indicate that anatomical specificity may exist within the striatum for regulating these behavioral responses.  相似文献

1. Single units that responded to yaw rotation were recorded extracellularly in the caudal inferior olive (IO) of barbiturate-anesthetized cats. Of 276 neurons, 55 responded reliably to yaw, and extensive quantitative data were recorded from 25. 2. No yaw-sensitive IO neuron responded to somatosensory or auditory stimuli but two responded, though unreliably, to flash. 3. Yaw-sensitive IO cells fired at low (1-4 spikes/s), irregular rates during one direction of rotation. Though cells responded reliably during yaw, firing rates varied considerably from cycle to cycle. Rotation speed and acceleration were not represented in any cell's firing rate. 4. Eighty five percent (47/55) of yaw-sensitive cells fired during contralateral rotation, 9% (5/55) during ipsilateral rotation, and 6% (3/55) fired from late in the ipsilateral phase of a sinusoidal oscillation to the middle of the contralateral phase. 5. Responses were tested to 0.1-Hz sinusoidal yaw oscillations with a range of peak angular velocities (1-200 degrees/s). Thresholds were not sharp because of the cycle to cycle variability in response rates but were estimated using averaged responses. The peak rate of the most sensitive cell was driven to criterion (2 SD above spontaneous rate) by an oscillation with a peak velocity of 1 degrees/s. Other cells reached criterion between 5 and 50 degrees/s. 6. Sinusoidal oscillation at all frequencies tested (0.01-0.5 Hz) elicited approximately the same firing rates. Even at 0.01 Hz cells responded well. Responses lagged acceleration by approximately 25 degrees at 0.01 Hz and shifted to later parts of the cycle as frequency increased so that firing lagged acceleration by approximately 200 degrees at 0.5 Hz. 7. Histological reconstruction showed that yaw-sensitive neurons were recorded in olivary subnucleus beta (N beta), the dorsal cap of Kooy (DC), the posterior medial region of the medial accessory division of the inferior olive (MAO), and in the medial-lateral center of the caudal MAO. 8. Yaw-sensitive neurons in the inferior olive provide a signal to the cerebellum that indicates the direction of passive rotation over a wide range of velocity and acceleration. The signal from individual neurons does not reliably encode either rotation velocity or acceleration. Yaw-sensitive IO neurons are therefore unlike other central vestibular neurons but are similar to somatosensory IO cells which signal the presence, but not the intensity of a stimulus.  相似文献

Reciprocal connections between the orbitofrontal cortex and the basolateral nucleus of the amygdala may provide a critical circuit for the learning that underlies goal-directed behavior. We examined neural activity in rat orbitofrontal cortex and basolateral amygdala during instrumental learning in an olfactory discrimination task. Neurons in both regions fired selectively during the anticipation of rewarding or aversive outcomes. This selective activity emerged early in training, before the rats had learned reliably to avoid the aversive outcome. The results support the concept that the basolateral amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex cooperate to encode information that may be used to guide goal-directed behavior.  相似文献

Rats were given extended training on a fixed-interval one-minute schedule in the presence of freely available water. Each food pellet delivery was accompanied by brief stimuli of blackout and tone. A total of 10 probe test sessions was conducted after stability was obtained with a maximum of 9 within-session probes during each session. On probes brief stimuli, food, or both were omitted. Omitting brief stimuli, singularly or in combination, did not reliably affect licks or bar presses. Omitting food, in the presence or absence of brief stimuli, eliminated polydipsic rates of licking but rates of bar presses were low early in the interval if brief stimuli were present and high throughout the interval if brief stimuli were absent. These effects were similar to those obtained with second-order schedules and suggest that polydipsic levels of schedule-induced drinking are under the control of the discriminative properties of food reinforcers.  相似文献

Two studies were conducted to investigate affective modulation of startle responses to unilateral tactile probes and to determine whether such modulation is lateralized. Right-handed undergraduates received airpuffs to the left or right temple while viewing pleasant, neutral, and unpleasant pictures. Side of probe presentation was varied between the two trial blocks of the experiment in Study 1 (n= 48) but varied randomly within trial blocks in Study 2 (n= 48). Primary results were consistent across studies. Replicating and extending the findings for acoustic probes, eyeblink responses to tactile probes were larger during unpleasant than during pleasant pictures. However, affective modulation of startle did not differ reliably between the two sides of probe presentation (sensory laterality) or the two sides of the response (motor lateralily) in either study or in a combined analysis.  相似文献

The control of behavior by stimuli presented during sleep, and related effects on sleep and daytime sleepiness, were investigated in 17 older (age = 60-74 years) adults. Experimental subjects (N = 8) were trained while awake to terminate tone presentations by taking a deep breath. Tones were then presented following sleep onset for four consecutive nights with a mean intertone interval of 4 min. Control subjects (N = 9) slept in the laboratory but did not receive tones. The daytime sleepiness of both groups was assessed by recording latency to sleep onset in a morning and afternoon nap test. It was found that the experimental subjects responded reliably to the tones. Responding, however, was almost invariably accompanied by disruption of sleep and overall sleep structure was markedly altered. Surprisingly, the daytime sleepiness of experimental subjects was not reliably greater than that of control subjects.  相似文献

The present study examined affective processes of social anxiety (SA) through emotional modulation of the startle reflex. Eighty-four high and low trait socially anxious undergraduates viewed socially-relevant and socially-irrelevant pleasant, neutral, and unpleasant pictures, and acoustic startle probes were presented during pictures and the inter-trial interval. Startle was potentiated during unpleasant compared to pleasant stimuli, but this valence modulation did not reliably vary between groups or socially-relevant and -irrelevant stimuli. However, when participants were categorized based on public-speaking fears rather than general SA symptoms, the high fear group demonstrated reliable valence modulation, whereas the low fear group did not. These findings are interpreted within the context of the broader literature suggesting that the specificity of fear in SA may influence psychophysiological reactivity.  相似文献

PURPOSE: Many criteria have been developed to rate the quality of online health information. To effectively evaluate quality, consumers must use quality criteria that can be reliably assessed. However, few instruments have been validated for inter-rater agreement. Therefore, we assessed the degree to which two raters could reliably assess 22 popularly cited quality criteria on a sample of 42 complementary and alternative medicine Web sites. METHODS: We determined the degree of inter-rater agreement by calculating the percentage agreement, Cohen's kappa, and prevalence- and bias-adjusted kappa (PABAK). RESULTS: Our un-calibrated analysis showed poor inter-rater agreement on eight of the 22 quality criteria. Therefore, we created operational definitions for each of the criteria, decreased the number of assessment choices and defined where to look for the information. As a result 18 of the 22 quality criteria were reliably assessed (inter-rater agreement > or = 0.6). CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that even with precise definitions, some commonly used quality criteria cannot be reliably assessed. However, inter-rater agreement can be improved with precise operational definitions.  相似文献

Here, we report on the development and performance of a robust 3-T single-voxel proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS) experimental protocol and data analysis pipeline for quantifying brain metabolism during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) surgery in a neonatal porcine model, with the overall goal of elucidating primary mechanisms of brain injury associated with these procedures. The specific aims were to assess which metabolic processes can be reliably interrogated by 1H MRS on a 3-T clinical scanner and to provide an initial assessment of brain metabolism during deep hypothermia cardiac arrest (DHCA) surgery and recovery. Fourteen neonatal pigs underwent CPB surgery while placed in a 3-T MRI scanner for 18, 28, and 37°C DHCA studies under hyperglycemic, euglycemic, and hypoglycemic conditions. Total imaging times, including baseline measurements, circulatory arrest (CA), and recovery averaged 3 h/animal, during which 30–40 single-voxel 1H MRS spectra (sLASER pulse sequence, TR/TE = 2000/30 ms, 64 or 128 averages) were acquired from a 2.2-cc right midbrain voxel. 1H MRS at 3 T was able to reliably quantify (1) anaerobic metabolism via depletion of brain glucose and the associated build-up of lactate during CA, (2) phosphocreatine (PCr) to creatine (Cr) conversion during CA and subsequent recovery upon reperfusion, (3) a robust increase in the glutamine-to-glutamate (Gln/Glu) ratio during the post-CA recovery period, and (4) a broadening of the water peak during CA. In vivo 1H MRS at 3 T can reliably quantify subtle metabolic brain changes previously deemed challenging to interrogate, including brain glucose concentrations even under hypoglycemic conditions, ATP usage via the conversion of PCr to Cr, and differential changes in Glu and Gln. Observed metabolic changes during CPB surgery of a neonatal porcine model provide new insights into possible mechanisms for prevention of neuronal injury.  相似文献

Cognitive control is required for correct antisaccade performance. High antisaccade error rates characterize certain psychiatric disorders, but can be highly variable, even among healthy groups. Antisaccade data were acquired from a large sample of healthy undergraduates, and error rate was quantified. Participants who reliably made few errors (good, n = 13) or many errors (poor, n = 13) were recruited back to perform antisaccades during fMRI acquisition. A data‐derived model was used to compare signal between good and poor performers during blocks of antisaccade trials. Behaviorally derived regressors were used to compare signal between good and poor performers during correct and error trials. Results show differential activation in middle frontal gyrus and inferior parietal lobule between good and poor performers, suggesting that failure to recruit these top‐down control regions corresponds to poor antisaccade performance in healthy young adults.  相似文献
