The present study investigated whether (a) a reduced duration of auditory sensory memory is found in late talking children and (b) whether deficits of sensory memory are linked to persistent difficulties in language acquisition. Former late talkers and children without delayed language development were examined at the age of 4 years and 7 months using mismatch negativity (MMN) with interstimulus intervals (ISIs) of 500 ms and 2000 ms. Additionally, short‐term memory, language skills, and nonverbal intelligence were assessed. MMN mean amplitude was reduced for the ISI of 2000 ms in former late talking children both with and without persistent language deficits. In summary, our findings suggest that late talkers are characterized by a reduced duration of auditory sensory memory. However, deficits in auditory sensory memory are not sufficient for persistent language difficulties and may be compensated for by some children.  相似文献

Mismatch negativity (MMN) is a promising window on how the functional integrity of auditory sensory memory and change discrimination is modulated by age and relevant clinical conditions. However, the effects of aging on MMN have remained somewhat elusive, particularly at short interstimulus intervals (ISIs). We performed a meta-analysis of peer-reviewed MMN studies that had targeted both young and elderly adults to estimate the mean effect size. Nine studies, consisting of 29 individual investigations, were included and the final total study population consisted of 182 young and 165 elderly subjects. The effects of different deviant types and duration of ISIs on the effect size were assessed. The overall mean effect size was 0.63 (95% CI at 0.43–0.82). The effect sizes for long ISI (> 2 s, effect size 0.68, 95% CI at 0.31–1.06) and short ISI (< 2 s, effect size 0.61, 95% CI at 0.39–0.84) were both considered moderate. A further analysis showed a prominent aging-related decrease in MMN responses to duration and frequency changes at short ISIs. It was also interesting to note that the effect size was about 25% larger for duration deviant condition compared to the frequency deviant condition. In conclusion, a reduced MMN response to duration and frequency deviants is a robust feature among the aged adults, which suggests that there has been a decline in the functional integrity of central auditory processing in this population.  相似文献

Impairment in mismatch negativity (MMN) generation is a robust biological marker of schizophrenia. Understanding the physiological and pharmacological processes involved in its generation may therefore advance our understanding of this complex disorder. The present study tested if acute administration of nicotine modulates human auditory sensory memory as measured with MMN. ERP responses to tone duration deviants were recorded using a stimulation protocol with continuously changing (roving) standard stimuli in order to measure the effect of stimulus repetitions on encoding of new stimuli (MMN memory trace effect). Twenty healthy adult volunteers were randomly assigned to receive either a nicotine gum or placebo after a baseline ERP recording. Nicotine administration augmented MMN amplitude in the treatment group compared to the baseline recording, while no MMN change was found in the placebo group. The drug effect was due to a selective enhancement of a frontal positive potential to standard stimuli (from 80-200 ms post-stimulus), while the negativity to deviants remained unaffected. Furthermore, under nicotine stimulation this repetition positivity showed a more marked increase with stimulus repetition compared to baseline and placebo. These results have potential implications for schizophrenia by suggesting that nicotinic agonists could ameliorate patients' MMN deficits by improving stimulus encoding and sensory memory trace formation.  相似文献

Physiological aging affects early sensory-perceptual processes. The aim of this experiment was to evaluate changes in auditory sensory memory in physiological aging using the Mismatch Negativity (MMN) paradigm as index. The MMN is a marker recorded through the electroencephalogram and is used to evaluate the integrity of the memory system. We adopted a new, faster paradigm to look for differences between 3 groups of subjects of different ages (young, middle age and older adults) as a function of short or long intervals between stimuli. We found that older adults did not show MMN at long interval condition and that the duration of MMN varied according to the participants' age. The current study provides electrophysiological evidence supporting the theory that the encoding of stimuli is preserved during normal aging, whereas the maintenance of sensory memory is impaired. Considering the advantage offered by the MMN paradigm used here, these data might be a useful reference point for the assessment of auditory sensory memory in pathological aging (e.g., in neurodegenerative diseases).  相似文献

Most natural sounds are composed of a mixture of frequencies, which activate separate neurons in the tonotopic auditory cortex. Nevertheless, we perceive this mixture as an integrated sound with unique acoustic properties. We used the Mismatch Negativity (MMN), a marker of auditory change detection, to determine whether individual harmonics are represented in sensory memory. The MMN elicited by duration and pitch deviations were compared for harmonic and pure tones. Controlled for acoustic differences between standards and deviants and their relative probabilities, the MMN was larger for harmonic than pure tones for duration but not for pitch deviance. Because the magnitude of the MMN reflects the number of concurrent changes in the acoustic input relative to a preexistent acoustic representation, these results suggest that duration is represented and compared separately for individual frequencies, whereas pitch comparison occurs after integration.  相似文献

Auditory sensory memory is an important ability for successful language acquisition and processing. The mismatch negativity (MMN) in response to auditory stimuli has been proposed as an objective tool to measure the existence of auditory sensory memory traces. By increasing interstimulus intervals, attenuation of MMN peak amplitude and increased MMN peak latency have been suggested to reflect duration and decay of sensory memory traces. The aim of the present study is to conduct a systematic review of studies investigating sensory memory duration with MMN. Searches of electronic databases yielded 743 articles. Of these, 37 studies met final eligibility criteria. Results point to maturational changes in the time span of auditory sensory memory from birth on with a peak in young adulthood, as well as to a decrease of sensory memory duration in healthy aging. Furthermore, this review suggests that sensory memory decline is related to diverse neurological, psychiatric, and pediatric diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, alcohol abuse, schizophrenia, and language disorders. This review underlines that the MMN provides a unique window to the cognitive processes of auditory sensory memory. However, further studies combining electrophysiological and behavioral data, and further studies in clinical populations are needed, also on individual levels, to validate the MMN as a clinical tool for the assessment of sensory memory duration.  相似文献

Behavioral estimates of time discrimination threshold on animals might be contaminated by the conditioning procedure used and by attentional effects. To avoid such side effects, we measured time discrimination by recording the rat electroencephalographic response to small temporal variations. Freely moving rats were presented with repetitive sounds, some of them being occasionally shorter than the standard, to produce a Mismatch Negativity (MMN) which is known to primarily involve preattentive processes. The smallest difference eliciting a MMN located the discrimination threshold between 16% and 33% of the standard, without attentional confound. Being observed in several species, MMN can be used to decipher both the phylogenetic and ontogenetic evolution of time discrimination, without attentional confound.  相似文献

This study investigates the electrical brain activity correlates of the automatic detection of suprasegmental and local speech cues by using a passive oddball paradigm, in which the standard Hungarian word 'banán' ('banana' in English) was contrasted with two deviants: a voiceless phoneme deviant ('panán'), and a stress deviant, where the stress was on the second syllable, instead of the obligatory first one. As a result, we obtained the mismatch negativity component (MMN) of event-related brain potentials in each condition. The stress deviant elicited two MMNs: one as a response to the lack of stress as compared to the standard stimulus, and another to the additional stress. Our results support that the MMN is as valuable in investigating processing characteristics of suprasegmental features as in that of phonemic features. MMN data may provide further insight into pre-attentive processes contributing to spoken word recognition.  相似文献

Two acoustic events occurring successively within 200 ms are processed as a single event when the first event predicts the occurrence of the second, but are processed as two separate events when the two events can also occur independently of each other and thus the second event provides new information. However, if the two events are carried by the same stimulus, they are always processed as a single event. This was shown by studies using the mismatch negativity (MMN) event-related potential (ERP). The current study was aimed at investigating the acoustic parameters that determine the integration of successive events within the putative temporal window of integration (TWI). The results demonstrate that temporal grouping (achieved here by presenting sounds in pairs) of the acoustic events within the TWI creates strong unitization, which is not broken up by higher level contingencies of the sound sequence, such as the predictability of the second successive event.  相似文献

Abstract Infrequently omitting a sound from a repetitive sequence elicits the mismatch negativity (MMN) ERP response when the stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) is less than 200 ms. We contrasted two alternative explanations of omission MMN. (1) Each sound starts a separate temporal integration process. Omissions violate the constancy of the temporal structure within the integration window. (2) Sounds preceding an omission are perceived to be louder than those followed by a sound within the integration period, because omissions allow the full stimulus aftereffect to be included in perceived loudness. We varied the SOA between 117 and 217 ms. For this case, the temporal structure explanation predicts that no MMN will be elicited, whereas the loudness summation explanation predicts that MMN will be elicited. MMN was elicited by tone omissions with random SOA, suggesting that loudness summation plays an important role in the elicitation of omission MMN.  相似文献

Attention and mismatch negativity   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
The mismatch negativity (MMN) component of the auditory event-related potential (ERP) is elicited by infrequent, physically deviant stimuli in a sequence of frequent homogeneous stimuli (standards). It has been suggested that the MMN is generated by an automatic (attention-independent) neural mismatch process with a memory trace that encodes the physical features of the standard stimulus. The proposed MMN independence of attention was addressed in the present study. Standard stimuli and two types of deviant stimuli, differing from standards either in frequency or intensity, were dichotically presented in random order and at a very rapid rate. The subject attended either to left-or right-ear stimuli, counting the number of a designated type of deviants in that ear. In the present conditions of very strongly focused attention, the MMN was elicited even by frequency change in the ignored input stream, and its amplitude was very similar to that of the MMN elicited by equivalent deviant stimuli (targets) in the attended input stream. In contrast, the MMN to intensity deviation was clearly attenuated in the absence of attention. This effect is, however, probably due to the attention effect on the MMN generator itself rather than the antecedent sensory-analysis and -storing functions.  相似文献

Information processing deficits in major depressive disorder have been infrequently examined electrophysiologically. Its preattentive and sensory information processing was examined using mismatch field (MMNm) and P1m components, respectively, by magnetoencephalography. Fourteen major depressive disorder patients and 19 healthy volunteers participated in the study. MMNm was elicited in response to duration and frequency changes of pure-tone stimuli and in response to a vowel across-category change. The magnetic global field power (mGFP) of MMNm was significantly smaller in the major depressive disorder patients than in the healthy volunteers, although that of P1m did not differ between the two groups. Information processing at the preattentive level is impaired functionally in major depressive disorder, and this dysfunction is not due to the dysfunction at the lower level of information processing.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine if duration‐related stress in speech and music is processed in a similar way in the brain. To this end, we tested 20 adults for their abstract mismatch negativity (MMN) event‐related potentials to two duration‐related stress patterns: stress on the first syllable or note (long‐short), and stress on the second syllable or note (short‐long). A significant MMN was elicited for both speech and music except for the short‐long speech stimulus. The long‐short stimuli elicited larger MMN amplitudes for speech and music compared to short‐long stimuli. An extra negativity—the late discriminative negativity (LDN)—was observed only for music. The larger MMN amplitude for long‐short stimuli might be due to the familiarity of the stress pattern in speech and music. The presence of LDN for music may reflect greater long‐term memory transfer for music stimuli.  相似文献

As a starting point for constructing a high-resolution, resliceable computer graphics model for the extraction, quantitative analysis, display, and modeling of neuroanatomical data the outer border and the boundaries of inner divisions and parts of the paraventricular nucleus have been drawn for all 39 serial histological sections prepared for a published reference atlas of the rat brain. This careful parceling revealed three new features of paraventricular nucleus topography: the full rostral extent of the anterior parvicellular part, the caudal end of the medial magnocellular part, and a thin rostrolateral extension of the dorsal medial parvicellular part composed at least in part of neurons expressing corticotropin-releasing hormone. The vector graphics drawings were aligned using the already established alignment of nine consecutive, relevant Atlas Levels, and then contours were smoothed to eliminate nonlinear distortions associated with histological mounting. This dataset was then used to create three-dimensional contour and surface models of the paraventricular nucleus, as well as two-dimensional horizontal and sagittal projections of its outer border. The computer graphics files containing raw and smoothed drawings for all 39 serial sections are supplied for use by researchers interested in developing new or better computer graphics analysis tools involving the paraventricular nucleus. This work may also stimulate the long range goal of creating a high-resolution, resliceable, computer graphics model of the whole brain, and eventually the whole nervous system, that is useful for quantitative analysis and topological transformation.  相似文献

To better understand the possible functional significance of electrophysiological sensory gating measures, response suppression of midlatency auditory event related potential (ERP) components was compared to the mismatch negativity (MMN) and to self-rated indices of stimulus filtering and passive attention-switching phenomena in an age-restricted sample of healthy adults. P1 sensory gating, measured during a paired-click paradigm, was correlated with MMN amplitude, measured during an acoustic oddball paradigm (intensity deviation). Also, individuals that exhibited less robust P1 suppression endorsed higher rates of "perceptual modulation" difficulties, whereas component N1 suppression was more closely related to "over-inclusion" of irrelevant sounds into the focus of attention. These findings suggest that the ERP components investigated are not redundant, but correspond to distinct-possibly related-pre-attentive processing systems.  相似文献

The detection of an irregular, potentially relevant change (deviance) in the regular, unattended acoustic environment is ensured by the automatic deviance detection mechanism. It underlies the formation of a regularity representation and a comparison of an incoming sound with this representation. A mismatch outcome of this comparison evokes the mismatch negativity (MMN) of the event-related potential. For unattended pure tones the automatic deviance detection mechanism operates most efficiently for initial sound parts, which is why these are suggested to contribute more to sound representation than later parts. A transient that physically segments the sound can overcome this temporal constraint in sound representation. Whether the resulting individual (initial and terminal) sound segments or the joined two-segments give rise to the regularity representation is addressed here. We took advantage that the MMN attenuation to the second of two successive deviances (deviance-repetition effect) is more pronounced when the deviances belong to the same unit of representation. We measured MMN for two deviances (frequency modulations) within segmented sounds that either occurred within the initial or the terminal segment, or that were split across both segments. Unexpectedly, we did not obtain a deviance-repetition effect. Instead, we obtained a temporal distance effect: With increasing temporal distance from deviance-onset relative to segment-onset the MMN amplitude decreased. Furthermore, this effect did not depend on whether the deviance occurred in the initial or in the terminal segment. Thus, (for the current approach) we suggest that the regularity representation is based on the individual rather than joined segments.  相似文献

Mismatch negativity (MMN) is measured by subtracting the averaged response to a set of standard stimuli from the averaged response to rarer deviant stimuli, and taking the amplitude of this difference wave in a given time window. This method is problematic when used to evaluate individuals, because there is no estimate of variance. We describe a new approach, in which independent components with high trial‐by‐trial variance are first removed. Next, each deviant response has the preceding standard response subtracted, giving a set of single trial difference waves. We illustrate this approach in analysis of MMN to brief tones in 17 adults. The best criterion for MMN combined t‐test with an index of inter‐trial coherence, giving significant MMN in 14 (82%) of individuals. Single‐trial methods can indicate which people show MMN. However, in some clinically normal individuals there was no MMN, despite good behavioral discrimination of stimuli.  相似文献

Previous studies have suggested that the memory underlying the mismatch negativity (MMN) can be deactivated by a period of silence and later reactivated. An alternative is that the memory becomes inapplicable due to a period of silence and subsequently reinstated. Both interpretations rest on the absence of a MMN for a deviant in Position 1 of a train (showing deactivation or inapplicability of the memory) and the presence of a MMN in Position 2 of the train (evidencing reactivation or reinstatement of the memory). In these studies, the standards were fixed across all trains of a given condition. Hence, it is not clear if the MMN elicited in Position 2 requires presentation of multiple trains with identical standards or only a single train. Experiment 1 showed that a single train is sufficient. With data from recent studies, Experiment 2 showed that MMNs in Position 2 of trains are due to reinstatement rather than reactivation of the memory.  相似文献
