We contrast naming from pictures, and reading words, for objects and verbs (actions relating to the objects) in a patient with a large, posterior left-hemisphere lesion. We present evidence for spared picture naming for verbs relative to objects, whilst the opposite pattern of sparing occurred in reading. Objects were also spared relative to verbs in tasks requiring that written words be matched to either pictures or auditory words, in the presence of semantically related or unrelated distractors. We conclude that verb semantics were more impaired than semantic knowledge for objects, and that the better semantic knowledge for object names supported word reading. With pictures, however, action verb retrieval was maintained through a nonsemantic route from vision to action, or though preserved right-hemisphere “action semantics.”  相似文献

We present the case of a fluent aphasic patient who is impaired at producing nouns relative to verbs in picture naming, sentence completion, and sentence generation tasks, but is better at both producing and comprehending concrete nouns than abstract nouns. Moreover, he displays a selective difficulty in producing the plural forms of some nouns and pseudowords presented as nouns, but was able to produce the phonologically identical third-person singular forms of corresponding verb homonyms and of the same pseudowords presented as verbs. This pattern of performance casts doubt on the hypothesis that grammatical class effects are always epiphenomena of more general semantic impairments that affect the naming of actions or of concrete objects, and suggests that these effects may arise instead from damage to syntactic processes pertaining specifically to the grammatical properties of words. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded from children, 9 to 13 years of age, while they named words and pictures. The words and pictures were presented individually and in superimposed picture-word pairs in which the meaning of the words and pictures was either congruent, semantically associated, or incongruent. Both words and pictures elicited large amplitude negative waves (N450) at anterior electrode sites. The amplitude of this N450 wave was larger for individually presented pictures than for words. N450 amplitude was also larger when naming pictures than when naming words in the superimposed arrays, an effect that is attributed to differences in attentional demand required to name pictures rather than to exogenous stimulus characteristics. No significant effects of semantic incongruity were observed. These ERP waveforms for children differ from those observed for adults who exhibited positive amplitude waves to individually presented pictures and who also exhibited semantic incongruity effects.  相似文献

The role of attention in the processing of pictures and words was investigated for a group of normally achieving children and for groups of learning disability subtypes that were defined by deficient performance on tests of reading and spelling (Group RS) and of arithmetic (Group A). An event-related potential (ERP) recording paradigm was employed in which the children were required to attend to and name either pictures or words that were presented individually or in superimposed picture-word arrays that varied in degree of semantic relation. For Group RS, the ERP waves to words, both presented individually or attended in the superimposed array, exhibited reduced N450 amplitude relative to controls, whereas their ERP waves to pictures were normal. This suggests that the word-naming deficiency for Group RS is not a selective attention deficit but rather a specific linguistic deficit that develops at a later stage of processing. In contrast to Group RS and controls, Group A did not exhibit reliable early frontal negative waves (N280) to the superimposed pictures and words, an effect that may reflect a selective attention deficit for these children that develops at an early stage of visuo-spatial processing. These early processing differences were also evident in smaller amplitude N450 waves for Group A when naming either pictures or words in the superimposed arrays.  相似文献

Differential patterns of impairment with respect to noun and verb production have been observed in the nonfluent and semantic variants of primary progressive aphasia. However, the factors influencing this discrepancy remain unclear. The present study evaluates verb retrieval in primary progressive aphasia using a naming task and a story completion task. Findings indicate that patients with the semantic variant are influenced by familiarity, frequency, and age of acquisition in both object and action naming, whereas patients with the nonfluent variant are not. Surprisingly, there were no differences in either group between object and action naming, presumably because the lists were well matched on pertinent variables. In the story completion task, greater impairment in semantically heavier than in semantically lighter verbs was observed for the semantic variant, and grammaticality and verb tense agreement was significantly lower in the nonfluent variant. The present findings suggest that lexicosemantic attributes affect verb production in the semantic variant, whereas both lexicosemantic and syntactic attributes affect verb production in the nonfluent variant.  相似文献

A long-standing debate regarding the representation of semantic knowledge is whether such knowledge is represented in a single, amodal system or whether it is organised into multiple subsystems based on modality of input or type of information. The current paper presents a distributed connectionist model of semantics that constitutes a middle ground between these unitary- versus multiple-semantics accounts. In the model, semantic representations develop under the pressure of learning to mediate between multiple input and output modalities in performing various tasks. The system has a topographic bias on learning that favours short connections, leading to a graded degree of modality-specific functional specialisation within semantics. The model is applied to the specific empirical phenomena of optic aphasia--a neuropsychological disorder in which patients exhibit a selective deficit in naming visually presented objects that is not attributable to more generalised impairments in object recognition (visual agnosia) or naming (anomia). As a result of the topographic bias in the model, as well as the relative degrees of systematicity among tasks, damage to connections from vision to regions of semantics near phonology impairs visual object naming far more than visual gesturing or tactile naming, as observed in optic aphasia. Moreover, as in optic aphasia, the system is better at generating the name of an action associated with an object than at generating the name of the object itself, because action naming receives interactive support from the activation of action representations. The ability of the model to account for the pattern of performance observed in optic aphasia across the full range of severity of impairment provides support for the claim that semantic representations exhibit graded functional specialisation rather than being entirely amodal or modality-specific.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of phonological neighbourhood density (PND) on the performance of aphasic speakers whose naming impairments differentially implicate phonological or semantic stages of lexical access. A word comes from a dense phonological neighbourhood if many words sound like it. Limited evidence suggests that higher density facilitates naming in aphasic speakers, as it does in healthy speakers. Using well-controlled stimuli, Experiment 1 confirmed the influence of PND on accuracy and phonological error rates in two aphasic speakers with phonological processing deficits. In Experiments 2 and 3, we extended the investigation to an aphasic speaker who is prone to semantic errors, indicating a semantic deficit and/or a deficit in the mapping from semantics to words. This individual had higher accuracy, and fewer semantic errors, in naming targets from high- than from low-density neighbourhoods. It is argued that the Results provide strong support for interactive approaches to lexical access, where reverberatory feedback between word- and phoneme-level lexical representations not only facilitates phonological level processes but also privileges the selection of a target word over its semantic competitors.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown that motor activations in action verb comprehension can be modulated by task demands (e.g., motor imagery vs. passive reading) and the specificity of action verb meaning. However, how the two factors work together to influence the involvement of the motor system during action verb comprehension is still unclear. To address the issue, the current study investigated the brain activations in motor imagery and passive reading of verbs about hand actions and tool-use actions. Three types of Chinese verbs were used, including hand-action verbs and two types of tool-use verbs emphasizing either the hand or tools information. Results indicated that all three types of verbs elicited common activations in hand motor areas during passive reading and motor imagery. Contrast analyses showed that in the hand verbs and the tool verbs where the hand information was emphasized, motor imagery elicited stronger effects than passive reading in the superior frontal gyrus, supplemental motor area and cingulate cortex that are related to motor control and regulation. For tool-use verbs emphasizing tools information, the motor imagery task elicited stronger activity than passive reading in occipital regions related to visual imagery. These results suggest that motor activations during action verb comprehension can be modulated by task demands and semantic features of action verbs. The sensorimotor simulation during language comprehension is flexible and determined by the interactions between linguistic and extralinguistic contexts.  相似文献

To test the claim that lesions of left anterior and middle temporal cortical structures specifically impair processing of nouns but not verbs, 56 left-hemisphere-language-dominant patients who had undergone anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) completed tasks assessing confrontation naming of pictured objects and actions, generation of synonyms for nouns and verbs, and semantic lexical judgments about nouns and verbs. Compared with right ATL patients, left ATL patients were impaired across different tasks that assessed naming and comprehension of high-imageability as well as low-imageability nouns. These groups did not differ, however, in verb naming or comprehension on most tasks. Results are consistent with the hypothesized specialization of left temporal lobe structures for processing nouns and suggest that naming problems commonly seen after left ATL extend beyond difficulties with retrieving object names and may be related to subtle disturbances in comprehension of the meanings underlying nominal word forms.  相似文献

Developing a cross-linguistic naming test has represented a challenge in language evaluation. In this paper, it is proposed that a cross-linguistic naming test should fulfill at least the following three criteria: (1) include only "universal" words found across different languages. The basic cross-linguistic core vocabulary is usually referred as the "Swadesh word list"; (2) include different semantic categories (e.g., living and nonliving elements); and (3) avoid the confounding of perceptual difficulties. Departing from the Swadesh word list, a cross-linguistic naming test was developed, including six different semantic categories: (a) body-parts (10 words), (b) natural phenomena (non-touchable) (5 words), (c) external objects (potentially known through the sight and the touch) (5 words), (d) animals (5 words), (e) colors (5 words), and (f) actions (10 words). A total of 40 color pictures were selected to represent these basic words. It is emphasized that this test has two major advantages: on one hand, it is readily available in hundreds of different languages; and, on the other hand, it is not a "fixed" test, but it includes photographs that can be replaced. Theoretically, norms are not required, and it represents a low-ceiling test. Word frequency can be used as a criterion of the level of difficulty. The next step will be to find the performance profile in different language pathologies, as well as the decline pattern in cases of dementia.  相似文献

Chinese characters appear in the currently used Korean language, and the system used for writing system the Korean language consists of a mixture of the Korean alphabet and Chinese characters. In the present study, neural mechanisms involved in reading a single Chinese character words and naming pictures by Korean native speakers were investigated using a functional magnetic resonance imaging technique. The findings show a right hemispheric dominance within the occipito-temporal and the left middle/medial frontal area for both reading Chinese characters and naming pictures. This should reflect the specific visual processing of reading Chinese characters. Additional activations in inferior frontal and cingulage gyrus were also observed. The activations of inferior parietal region and thalamus are of interest, since we assume that these activations are strongly related to the phonological status of single Chinese character words rather than two character words that are typically used by Korean native speakers.  相似文献

There are very numerous reports in the neuropsychological literature of patients showing, in naming and/or comprehension tasks, a disproportionate deficit for nouns in comparison with verbs or a disproportionate deficit for verbs in comparison with nouns. A number of authors advanced that, in at least some or even in every of these reported cases, the noun/verb dissociation in fact reflected an underlying conceptual deficit disproportionately affecting either object or action concepts. These patterns thus would put an additional constraint on theories of conceptual knowledge organization, which should be able to explain how brain damage could selectively disrupt the concepts of objects or the concepts of actions. We have reviewed 69 papers (published from 1984 to 2009) that reported a pattern of a noun or a verb disproportionate deficit in a single-case, multiple-case, or group study of brain-damaged patients with various aetiologies. From this review, we concluded that none of these studies provided compelling evidence in favour of the interpretation that the observed noun or verb disproportionate deficit arose at the conceptual processing level and, accordingly, that this level may be organized according to the "object/action" dimension. Furthermore, we argue that investigating conceptual impairments in brain-damaged patients according to the "object/action" dichotomy is not empirically fruitful if the purpose is to inform theories of conceptual knowledge organization. In order to provide evidence relevant to these theories, one needs to consider finer grained distinctions within both the object and the action category when investigating the scope of the patients' conceptual impairment.  相似文献

We report the case of DPI, an aphasic patient who shows a phonological impairment in production that spares certain syntactic and semantic categories. On a picture naming task, he produces mostly phono-logical paraphasias, and the probability of producing a correct response depends on the frequency and length of the target word. This deficit occurs in the presence of spared ability to find the grammatical gender of the items that he cannot name, intact conceptual knowledge, and very good reading and word repetition. Therefore, we conclude that DPI's deficit is restricted to the phonological retrieval of a correctly selected lexical entry. However, production errors are not uniform across semantic and syntactic domains. Numerals and names of days and months are totally spared compared to matched controls. In addition, abstract nouns and verbs are significantly less affected than concrete nouns, even when variables affecting phonological retrieval (frequency, length, syllabic structure) are controlled for. This suggests that a functional organisation in terms of semantic and syntactic variables exists at the level of phonological retrieval. We discuss these findings in light of current models of speech production.  相似文献

The interactive effects of attention and semantic relation on event-related potential (ERP) waveforms were examined during a naming task in which the physical stimulus array was the same across conditions. Superimposed picture-word pairs were presented in which the meaning of the words and pictures was congruent, semantically associated, or incongruent. In separate conditions, participants named words or pictures while ignoring the other stimulus. When words were attended, the superimposed pictures modulated the amplitude of P240 waves at posterior sites compared with when words were presented individually, but had no effect on N450 waves. In contrast, when pictures were attended to, the superimposed incongruent words elicited larger amplitude N450 waves at anterior sites than did congruent words or individually presented pictures. These effects affirm the independent processing of words and pictures during attention and are consistent with automatic and controlled processing of words and pictures, respectively. They also illustrate the endogenous nature of these late ERP waves.  相似文献
