Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is a conventional material used to construct rigid pavement that emits large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) during its manufacturing process, which is bad for the environment. It is also claimed that OPC is susceptible to acid attack, which increases the maintenance cost of rigid pavement. Therefore, a fly ash based geopolymer is proposed as a material for rigid pavement application as it releases lesser amounts of CO2 during the synthesis process and has higher acid resistance compared to OPC. This current study optimizes the formulation to produce fly ash based geopolymer with the highest compressive strength. In addition, the durability of fly ash based geopolymer concrete and OPC concrete in an acidic environment is also determined and compared. The results show that the optimum value of sodium hydroxide concentration, the ratio of sodium silicate to sodium hydroxide, and the ratio of solid-to-liquid for fly ash based geopolymer are 10 M, 2.0, and 2.5, respectively, with a maximum compressive strength of 47 MPa. The results also highlight that the durability of fly ash based geopolymer is higher than that of OPC concrete, indicating that fly ash based geopolymer is a better material for rigid pavement applications, with a percentage of compressive strength loss of 7.38% to 21.94% for OPC concrete. This current study contributes to the field of knowledge by providing a reference for future development of fly ash based geopolymer for rigid pavement applications.  相似文献

The production of Portland cement is widely regarded as a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. This contributes to 6–7% of total CO2 emissions, according to the International Energy Agency. As a result, several efforts have been made in recent decades to limit or eliminate the usage of Portland cement in concrete. Geopolymer has garnered a lot of attention among the numerous alternatives due to its early compressive strength, low permeability, high chemical resistance, and great fire-resistant behaviour. This study looks at the strength and microstructure of geopolymer based on fly ash and a combination of metakaolin and fly ash. Compressive strengths were measured at 7, 14, and 28 days, and microstructure was examined using SEM and XRD.  相似文献

Urban construction has produced a large amount of construction waste which has caused huge environmental problems. The sponge city is the development direction of urban construction, and permeable pavement concrete is an important material for sponge city construction. To see the law influencing different factors on the performance of recycled aggregate permeable pavement concrete, different water binder ratios, recycled aggregate particle gradations, ordinary aggregate substitution rates, and fly ash and admixture contents are designed to prepare permeable concrete. The compressive strength, permeability coefficient, frost resistance, and pore structure of permeable concrete are tested. The results show that when the replacement rate of recycled aggregate is 50%, the 28-d strength of concrete with a 0.25 water binder ratio can reach 28.9 MPa, and the permeability coefficient is 13.26 mm/s. The addition of fly ash will reduce the compressive strength, and the permeability coefficient increases first and then decreases with the increase of the fly ash content. When the mass fraction of fly ash instead of cement is 12%, the 28-d strength is 94.8% of that of the cement group, and the permeability coefficient can reach 14.03 mm/s. A water-reducing agent can obviously improve the workability of permeable concrete; the best content of the water-reducing agent is 0.2% of the cement mass. A reasonable amount of fly ash and water-reducing agent can optimize the number of harmless holes and less harmful holes in the concrete to improve the frost resistance and strength after the freeze–thaw, and the frost resistance is F150. This study provides a theoretical basis and technical guarantee for the resource utilization of recycled aggregate in permeable pavement concrete.  相似文献

Ternary Portland cement usage with a high amount of cement constituents different from clinker can afford great climate change advantages by lowering the Portland cement clinker content in the final product. This will contribute to cutting greenhouse gas emissions to close to zero by 2050. Such ternary Portland cements can be composed of different amounts of ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GBFS), coal fly ash (CFA), and clinker (K). Cements made with GGBFS, or CFA boast pozzolanic characteristics. Therefore, they would improve both the concrete compressive strength at later ages and durability. The 28- and 90-days mechanical strength test, non-steady state chloride migration test, described in NT BUILD 492, and natural chloride diffusion test (NT BUILD 443) were performed in concrete. Ternary cements made with GBFS and/or CFA presented better chloride diffusion resistance than concrete made with plain Portland cements. Furthermore, the development of compressive strength was delayed. The service life study was developed for concretes made with ternary cements with regard to the chloride penetration case.  相似文献

Concrete is known as the most globally used construction material, but it releases a huge amount of greenhouse gases due to cement production. Recently, Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) such as fly ash and Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS) have been widely used in concrete to reduce the cement content. However, SCMs can alter the mechanical properties and time-dependent behaviors of concrete and the early age mechanical properties of concrete significantly affect the concrete cracking in the engineering field. Therefore, evaluation of the development of the mechanical properties of SCMs-based concrete is vital. In this paper, the time development of mechanical properties of concrete mixes with various fly ash and GGBFS was experimentally investigated. Four different cement replacement levels including 0%, 20%, 30%, and 40% by fly ash and GGBFS as well as ternary binders were considered. Compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, and elastic modulus of concrete were measured until 28 days. Three additional concrete mixes with ternary binders were also cast to investigate the early-age autogenous shrinkage development until 28 days. In addition, prediction models in existing standards were used and compared to experimental results. The comparison results showed that the prediction models overestimated the compressive strength but underestimated the splitting tensile strength development and autogenous shrinkage. As a result, a model capturing the effect of fly ash and GGBFS on the development of compressive and splitting tensile strength is proposed to improve the prediction accuracy for current standards and empirical models.  相似文献

This study aims to evaluate the effect of curing and drying conditions on the strength properties of concrete containing coal bottom ash (CBA) and fly ash as substitutes for fine aggregates and cement, respectively. The strength properties of the concrete including CBA and fly ash were evaluated under two different curing and drying conditions: saturated surface-dry (SSD) conditions and oven-dried conditions at curing ages of 28 and 91 days. The natural fine aggregates of the mixtures were replaced by CBA fine aggregates at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% by volume. In addition, the cement in the mixtures was partly replaced with fly ash at 20% and 40%. The experimental program included the measurement of the unit weight, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, and ultrasonic pulse velocity of the concrete. The test results showed that the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength decreased as the CBA content increased under both SSD and oven-dried conditions. The curing and drying conditions of the concrete with CBA and fly ash considerably influenced the reduction in the compressive, splitting, and flexural tensile strengths of the concrete. Additionally, the experimental results showed that fly ash insignificantly contributed to the reduction in the strength properties under both SSD and oven-dried conditions. Finally, the relationships between ultrasonic pulse velocity and the splitting tensile strength, flexural tensile strength, and compressive strength were investigated.  相似文献

The use of fly ash in cement composites adversely affects its mechanical properties during the first days of mixture curing. Modern technology, in the form of an admixture containing the hydrated calcium silicates, allows to accelerate the hardening and binding process of concrete. In this paper, studies on the influence of the admixture on properties of concretes with the ordinary Portland cements (OPC) containing the addition of siliceous fly ash (FA) have been carried out. As part of the experimental research, the authors conducted a series of studies for cement pastes modified with the addition of FA and the CSH nano-admixture (NA). In order to compare the mixtures, the following tests of cement pastes were carried out: the compressive and flexural strength, heat of hydration, SEM and rheological shrinkage. The mechanical parameters were tested after 4, 8, 12 and 24 h. The hydration heat test and microstructure analysis were carried out during the first 24 h of the concrete curing. All tests were carried out on the standard samples. On the basis of the heat of hydration test, much higher hydration heat was found in mixtures modified with the NA. During the shrinkage test, a positive effect of the NA was observed—the shrinkage during the first 28 days of mixture curing was lower than in the reference samples. The application of the CSH nano-admixture to cement pastes with the addition of FA has brought positive effects. Apart from a significant increase in strength in the first 24 h of mixture curing, a reduction in the rheological shrinkage was observed. The admixture can be successfully used in the ash concretes, in which a higher early strength is required.  相似文献

The sustainability of the construction sector demands the reduction of CO2 emissions. The optimization of the amount of cement in concrete can be achieved either by partially replacing it by additions or by reducing the binder content. The present work aims at optimizing the properties of concrete used in the production of reinforced concrete poles for electrical distribution lines, combining the maximization of compactness with the partial replacement of cement by fly ash, natural pozzolans, and electric furnace slags. Natural aggregates were also partially replaced by recycled ones in mixtures with fly ash. Two types of concrete were studied: a fresh molded one with a dry consistency and a formwork molded one with a plastic consistency. The following properties were characterized: mechanical properties (flexural, tensile splitting, and compressive strengths, as well as Young’s modulus) and durability properties (capillary water absorption, water penetration depth under pressure, resistance to carbonation, chloride migration, and concrete surface resistivity). The service life of structures was estimated, taking the deterioration of reinforcement induced by concrete carbonation or chloride attack into account. Results revealed that mixtures with fly ash exhibit higher mechanical performance and mixtures with fly ash or pozzolans reveal much higher durability results than the full Portland cement-based mixtures.  相似文献

Concrete is the most commonly used structural material, without which modern construction could not function. It is a material with a high potential to adapt to specific operating conditions. The use of this potential is made by its material modification. The aim of the performed investigations was the assessment of rational application possibilities of fly ashes from thermally conversed municipal sewage sludge as an alternative concrete admixture. A concrete mix was designed, based on the Portland cement CEM I 42.5R and containing various quantity of ash, amounting to 0–25% of cement mass. The samples were conditioned and heated in a furnace at the temperature of 300 °C, 500 °C, and 700 °C. Physical and chemical properties of the ashes as well as utility properties of the concrete, i.e., density, compressive strength after 28, 56, and 90 days of maturation, frost resistance, and compressive strength in high temperature were determined. The tests were performed at cubic samples with 10 cm edge. The replacement of a determined cement quantity by the fly ashes enables obtaining a concrete composite having good strength parameters. The concrete modified by the fly ashes constituting 20% of the cement mass achieved its average compressive strength after 28 days of maturation equal to 50.12 MPa, after 56 days 50.61 MPa and after 90 days 50.80 MPa. The temperature growth weakens the composite structure. The obtained results confirm the possibility of waste recycling in the form of fly ashes as a cement substitute in concrete manufacturing.  相似文献

Geopolymer concrete has the potential to replace ordinary Portland cement which can reduce carbon dioxide emission to the environment. The addition of different amounts of steel fibers, as well as different types of end-shape fibers, could alter the performance of geopolymer concrete. The source of aluminosilicate (fly ash) used in the production of geopolymer concrete may lead to a different result. This study focuses on the comparison between Malaysian fly ash geopolymer concrete with the addition of hooked steel fibers and geopolymer concrete with the addition of straight-end steel fibers to the physical and mechanical properties. Malaysian fly ash was first characterized by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to identify the chemical composition. The sample of steel fiber reinforced geopolymer concrete was produced by mixing fly ash, alkali activators, aggregates, and specific amounts of hook or straight steel fibers. The steel fibers addition for both types of fibers are 0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.0% by volume percentage. The samples were cured at room temperature. The physical properties (slump, density, and water absorption) of reinforced geopolymer concrete were studied. Meanwhile, a mechanical performance which is compressive, as well as the flexural strength was studied. The results show that the pattern in physical properties of geopolymer concrete for both types of fibers addition is almost similar where the slump is decreased with density and water absorption is increased with the increasing amount of fibers addition. However, the addition of hook steel fiber to the geopolymer concrete produced a lower slump than the addition of straight steel fibers. Meanwhile, the addition of hook steel fiber to the geopolymer concrete shows a higher density and water absorption compared to the sample with the addition of straight steel fibers. However, the difference is not significant. Besides, samples with the addition of hook steel fibers give better performance for compressive and flexural strength compared to the samples with the addition of straight steel fibers where the highest is at 1.0% of fibers addition.  相似文献

Many scholars are concerned about the effect of nano-MgO as an expansion agent on the performance of cement-based materials at an early age, but over a long period less attention is paid to expansion stability and mechanical properties. This article examines the influence of nano-MgO on the long-term consistency, fluidity, expansion stability, hydration, and mechanical properties of 30% fly ash cement-based materials and improves research into nano-MgO as an expansion agent. Expansion performance, flexural and compressive strength, and stability after boiling and autoclave treatment were tested for specimens mixed with a 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10% cementitious material mass of nano-MgO. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) were employed to study their hydration process and microstructure. The results showed that nano-MgO had an obvious effect on the consistency, fluidity and expansion performance of cement paste. After curing in water for 365 days and autoclaving thereafter, the hydration of nano-MgO was relatively complete. The volumetric expansion pressure of the magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) crystals and the crystallization pressure generated after their continuous precipitation were the main reasons for the expansion of the slurry. Nano-MgO improved the microstructure of cement paste and significantly enhanced its long-term flexural strength and compressive strength. When the content of nano-MgO was less than 10%, the cement with 30% fly ash had good long-term stability with the potential to compensate for the shrinkage of large-volume concrete.  相似文献

The main objective of this study was to analyze the influence that the addition of finely ground hydrated lime has on chloride-induced reinforcement corrosion in eco-efficient concrete made with 50% cement replacement by fly ash. Six tests were carried out: mercury intrusion porosimetry, chloride migration, accelerated chloride penetration, electrical resistivity, and corrosion rate. The results show that the addition of 10–20% of lime to fly ash concrete did not affect its resistance to chloride penetration. However, the cementitious matrix density is increased by the pozzolanic reaction between the fly ash and added lime. As a result, the porosity and the electrical resistivity improved (of the order of 10% and 40%, respectively), giving rise to a lower corrosion rate (iCORR) of the rebars and, therefore, an increase in durability. In fact, after subjecting specimens to wetting–drying cycles in a 0.5 M sodium chloride solution for 630 days, corrosion is considered negligible in fly ash concrete with 10% or 20% lime (iCORR less than 0.2 µA/cm2), while in fly ash concrete without lime, corrosion was low (iCORR of the order of 0.3 µA/cm2) and in the reference concrete made with Portland cement, only the corrosion was high (iCORR between 2 and 3 µA/cm2).  相似文献

Environmental considerations and technical benefits have directed research towards reducing cement clinker content in concrete, and one of the best ways to do this is to replace cement with supplementary cementitious materials. High calcium fly ash, ladle furnace slag, and limestone filler were investigated as supplementary cementitious materials in cement pastes, and binary mixtures were produced at 10%, 20%, and 30% cement replacement rates for each material. The water requirement for maximum packing and for normal consistency were obtained for each paste, and strength development was determined at 3, 7, 28, and 90 days for the 20% replacement rate. Furthermore, two ternary mixtures at 30% cement replacement were also prepared for maximum packing density and tested for compressive strength development. The results showed that high calcium fly ash decreased cement paste packing and increased water demand but contributed to strength development through reactivity. Ladle furnace slag and limestone filler, on the other hand, were less reactive and seemed to contribute to strength development through the filler effect. The ternary paste with 70% cement, 20% high calcium fly ash, and 10% limestone filler showed equivalent strength development to that of the reference cement paste.  相似文献

The high pavement temperature plays an important role in the development of urban heat island (UHI) in summer. The objective of this study was to develop water retentive and thermal resistant cement concrete (WTCC) to enhance the pavement cooling effects. The WTCC was prepared by combining a water retentive material and a high aluminum refractory aggregate (RA) with porous cement concrete (PCC). Water retention capacity test, fluidity test, and compressive strength test were used to determine the composition ratio of the water retentive material. Mechanical performance and cooling effects of WTCC were evaluated by compressive and flexural strength tests and temperature monitoring test. The mass ratios of fly ash, silica fume, cement, and water in the water retentive material were determined as 65:35:15:63.9. The compressive strength and the flexural strength of WTCC after 28 days curing were 30.4 MPa and 4.6 MPa, respectively. Compared with stone mastic asphalt (SMA) mixture, PCC, and water retentive cement concrete (WCC), surface temperature of WTCC decreased by 11.4 °C, 5.5 °C, and 4.1 °C, respectively, and the internal temperatures of WTCC decreased by 10.3 °C, 6.1 °C, and 4.6 °C, respectively. The water retentive material has benefits of strength improvements and temperature reduction for WTCC. Based on the results, WTCC proved to have superior cooling effects and the potential to efficiently mitigate the UHI effects and be used in medium traffic roads.  相似文献

In this work, we present an analysis of natural fine aggregates’ influence on the properties of ultra-high-strength concrete. The reference concrete mix was made of natural sand with the addition of fly ash and microsilica. It was assumed to obtain concrete with a very high strength without the addition of fibers and without special curing conditions, ensuring the required workability of the concrete mix corresponding to the consistency of class S3. The reference concrete mix was modified by replacing sand with granite and basalt aggregate in the same fractions. Five series of concrete mixes made with CEM I 52.5R cement were tested. Experimental investigations were carried out regarding the consistency of the concrete mix, the compressive strength, the flexural strength and the water absorption by hardened concrete. A comparative analysis of the obtained results indicated significant improvement in the concrete strength after the use of basalt aggregate. The strength of the concrete series based on basalt aggregate, BC1, allowed it to be classified as ultra-high-performance concrete. Concrete based on sand, SC1, was characterized by the lowest compressive and flexural strength but obtained the best workability of the mix and the lowest water absorption. The results presented in the paper, show a significant influence of the type of aggregate used on the mechanical and physical properties of ultra-high strength concrete.  相似文献

The cement industry has brought serious environmental pollution problems. In the background of ecological civilization, accelerating rational use of waste resources plays an important role in protecting the environment. In this study, self-compacting concrete (SCC) is prepared using fly ash and lime powder as supplementary cementitious materials by replacing 50%, 60%, and 70% of ordinary Portland cement. By systematically analyzing the influence of the fly ash replacement rate on the workability and mechanical properties of SCC, steel-fiber-reinforced SCC containing 60% fly ash is chosen for further study, and steel fiber is added at the percentages of 0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75%, and 1.00%. The performances in fresh and hardened states are investigated in terms of workability, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, and axial compression deformation property. The obtained outcomes indicate that although the incorporation of fly ash can improve the workability of the mixture, there is a negative correlation between the mechanical properties of SCC and the fly ash replacement rate. For steel-fiber-reinforced SCC containing 60% fly ash, when the content of steel fibers exceeds 0.75%, the workability decreases sharply, and even when the volume fraction is 1.00%, the passing ability cannot meet the requirements of the technical specifications for applications of self-compacting concrete. The analysis results for mechanical properties show that compressive strength is not changed significantly with increasing percentage of steel fibers. The steel fibers strengthen splitting tensile strength and flexural strength significantly, and compared with that of without steel fibers, they increased by 22% and 58%, respectively, with steel fibers up to 1.00%. Additionally, the parameters of the axial compression deformation property are improved by introducing steel fibers, especially the strain energy (Vε) and relative toughness (Γ) of steel-fiber-reinforced SCC containing a high level of fly ash.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the properties of hardened alkali-activated concrete, which is considered an eco-friendly alternative to Portland cement concrete. In this paper, the precursors for alkali-activated concrete preparations are blends of fly ash and ground-granulated blast-furnace slag in three slag proportions: 5%, 20%, and 35%, expressed as a percentage of fly ash mass. Thus, three concretes were designed and cast, denominated as AAC5, AAC20, and AAC35. Their physical and mechanical characteristics were investigated at 28 and 180 days, as well as their properties of chloride ion transport. The modified NT BUILD 492 migration test was applied to determine the chloride ions’ penetration of the alkali-activated concretes. Improvement of mechanical strength and resistance to chloride aggression was observed with ground-granulated blast-furnace slag content increase in the compositions of the tested concretes. Mercury intrusion porosimetry tests provided insight into the open pore structures of concretes. A significant decrease in the total pore volume of the concrete and a change in the nature of the pore diameter distribution due to the addition of ground granulated blast furnace slag were demonstrated.  相似文献

The denitrification process was completed in coal-fired power plants, resulting in the fly ash containing NH4HSO4. When this kind of fly ash with ammonia was applied to cement and concrete, there could be phenomena such as a retarded setting time, decreased compressive strength, and volume expansion. This paper mainly investigated the influence of fly ash containing NH4HSO4 on the properties of fly ash cement paste, and pastes with NaHSO4 were set as the control samples. The research on Na+ in cement hydration was studied. The influence of NH4HSO4 content in fly ash on the properties of fly ash cement paste was also investigated. It was found that NH4+ could greatly affect the properties of fly ash cement paste, such as significantly reducing the fluidity, prolonging the setting time, decreasing the compressive strength, increasing the drying shrinkage, decreasing the total heat released during the hydration, and affecting the content of calcium hydroxide hydrate. Increasing the ammonia content of the denitrified fly ash would reduce fluidity, retard its setting time, increase the porosity of the cement stone, and increase the number of pores with large sizes in the fly ash cement paste. The increase of porosity and pores with large sizes in cement decreases the compressive strength and increases the drying shrinkage of the fly ash cement paste.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to apply a cementless binder using industrial by-products (fly ash, ground-granulated blast furnace slag, and silica fume) to precast concrete products. In this binder, calcium hydroxide was included as an alkali stimulant but Portland cement was not included. Experiments on the compressive strength and durability of this type of material were conducted and its applicability to precast concrete products was investigated using full-scale specimens. The experiments proved that high-temperature steam curing is effective at obtaining strength development and that compressive strength can be expressed as a linear function of the binder–water ratio. Experimental results of chloride ion diffusion coefficient and sulfuric acid resistance suggested that the proposed material has higher resistances than conventional cement concrete against these deterioration factors. It was also demonstrated that full-scale specimens of a box culvert and a centrifugally compacted pipe using this type of material have almost the same load-bearing capacity and deformation performance as those using conventional cement concrete. It is believed that the proposed material could be used as a construction material instead of cement concrete, contribute to reducing CO2 emission, and increase the reuse of industrial by-products.  相似文献

Fly ash is widely used in the cement industry to improve the performance and durability of concrete. The future availability of fly ash, however, is a concern, as most countries are inclining towards renewable energy sources as opposed to fossil fuels. Additional concerns have been raised regarding the impact of strict environmental regulations on fly ash quality and variability. This paper, therefore, evaluates if nano calcium carbonate (nano CaCO3) can be used as an alternative to fly ash. This paper presents comprehensive testing results (fresh, hardened, and durability) for OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) and PLC (Portland Limestone Cement) concretes with 1% nano CaCO3 and compares them to those for concretes with fly ash (both Class F and C). Compared to concretes with fly ash, OPC and PLC with nano CaCO3 presented improved testing results in most cases, including later age strength, permeability, and scaling resistance. As nanotechnology in concrete is a relatively new topic, more research on the efficient use of nanotechnology, such as for proper dispersion of nano CaCO3 in the concrete, has potential to offer increased benefits. Further, nano CaCO3 is environmentally and economically viable, as it has the potential to be produced within the cement plant while utilizing waste CO2 and generating economic revenue to the industry. Thus, nano CaCO3 has the potential to serve as an alternative to fly ash in all beneficial aspects—economic, environmental, and technical.  相似文献
