Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) is the vector of dengue virus in Brazil. Bioinsecticides based on Bacillus thuringiensis have shown satisfactory results in the control of Diptera, due to the production of proteins called Cry and Cyt. The aim of the present study was to select B. thuringiensis isolates carrying the cry and cyt genes, which are efficient in the control of Ae. aegypti. A collection of 27 isolates of B. thuringiensis, derived from various regions in Brazil, was evaluated using selective bioassays against A. aegypti larvae. Of the 27 isolates, five showed 100% larval mortality at a concentration of 0.05 ppm and the toxicity of these isolates in quantitative bioassays did not differ significantly at temperatures of 15, 25 and 35 °C. In addition, these isolates showed statistical differences for the LC50 values only above pH 9, which indicates a maintenance in insecticide potential in a wide range of alkaline pH values. This result is promising, considering that waste treatment reservoirs generally show an acid pH and higher temperatures. These isolates were also evaluated by PCR using specific primers for the genes cry4A, cry4B, cry10A, cry11, cyt1 and cyt2. The analyses demonstrated that all the five isolates showed amplification products for all the studied genes showing four different Cry proteins, besides Cyt proteins. The obtained results of bioassays and PCR demonstrates the great potential for the use of these isolates in controlling populations of Ae. Aegypti and perhaps other species of mosquitoes in a wide range of environments.  相似文献

Surveys of mosquitos in Sri Lanka have generally been confined to the South. A recent study in Jaffna peninsula in northern Sri Lanka reported on the biology of peridomestic mosquito species. The present survey indicates the predominant species to be Armigeres durhami (Edwaards) and Armigeres subalbatus (Coquillett). Aedes albopictus (Skuse), Ae. aegypti (Linnaeus) and Ae. novalbopictus Barraud were recorded only occasionally during the survey. Sampling of ponds in the Jaffna peninsula recorded the presence of Ae. aegypti, Anopheles sp. and Culex quinquefasciatus (Say).  相似文献

Rio de Janeiro is considered as the most important entry point for dengue viruses in Brazil. Using isoenzyme markers, we investigated the genetic structure of the mosquito vector Aedes aegypti sampled at three-month intervals in 14 districts in Rio de Janeiro from December 2002 to December 2003. We detected high levels of genetic differentiation (i.e. high F(ST) values and significant P values), which tended to persist throughout the year. The species does not take advantage of routes and railways to disperse. Genetic structuring was higher in the rainy season, suggesting low dispersion of Ae. aegypti at this time of year when all dengue epidemics have been reported in the city.  相似文献

We present a population genetic study of Aedes aegypti in Brazil using isoenzyme markers. Four polymorphic loci were used to examine 11 mosquito collections at four periods in 2003. Samples from a dengue-endemic area (southeastern region) and a dengue-free area (southern region) connected by an important network of roads and railways were analyzed. The degree of genetic differentiation observed between populations is consistent with limited gene flow between them. There was no evidence of passive dispersion of Ae. aegypti by vehicles among the different routes linking metropolitan areas.  相似文献

Aedes aegypti is one of the world's most widely distributed mosquitos and is of considerable medical importance as a vector of dengue and yellow fever. Not surprisingly therefore there has been more written on its biology than any other mosquito. The present paper summarizes ecological studies undertaken on this vector, including those on pre-adult mortalities, life-tables, adult dispersal and survival rates. In discussing surveillance techniques it is pointed out there are still no reliable methods for monitoring adult populations. The importance of the resting habits of adults and house construction in insecticidal control of Ae. aegypti is discussed. The question is, have ecological studies and population modeling resulted in any more understanding of the epidemiology of dengue, or helped formulate better control strategies? The answer seems to be not usually, possible because there have actually been relatively few good ecological studies on Ae. aegypti. Although mathematical modeling indicates that better control might be achieved if it were directed at the larvae, not adults, this has not usually been taken into consideration by those engaged in control. There is clearly need for greater collaboration between those practicing control, and ecologists and modelers.  相似文献

The 2007 outbreak of chikungunya in Gabon has indicated the potential of this disease to spread beyond its usual range ensuing from the expansion of the mosquito Aedes albopictus . A few cases of dengue (DEN) infection were also detected. Because little is known about the potential for Gabonese mosquito species to transmit both chikungunya and DEN viruses (DENV), we conducted studies to determine the susceptibility of Ae. albopictus and Aedes aegypti collected in Libreville to both viruses by experimental infections. Disseminated infection rates were high for Ae. albopictus infected with chikungunya virus (CHIKV) (66.7–86%) and low with DENV (13–21.4%). Moreover, Ae. aegypti sp. formosus was a less efficient vector of CHIKV than Ae. albopictus . The recent introduction and dissemination of chikungunya associated with the invasion of Ae. albopictus in Africa illustrates the potential for CHIKV to spread to other parts of the world.  相似文献

Spatial repellency of metofluthrin-impregnated polyethylene plastic strips against mosquitoes, Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus, were studied in a residential area in Hai Phong city, Vietnam. Thirty houses were selected as trial sites; half of these were assigned as untreated control and the other half were assigned for treatment. Primarily, irrespective of the room size, one room was treated with one strip. The dominant species in the trial sites were Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes aegypti. A rapid decrease in the mosquito index was observed immediately after the treatment with metofluthrin strips, and treatment was effective for at least 6 weeks.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Effective dengue prevention and Aedes aegypti control is a priority for the Cuban health authorities. To enhance effectiveness, strategies oriented towards a more active involvement of communities in control activities are being tested. This paper presents a sociological perspective on a pilot project conducted in the health area '26 de Julio' (La Havana) in 1999-2004. METHODS: Instrumental case study based on an exhaustive content analysis of project documents and on observations of a sociologist. RESULTS: The context and the pilot project are systematically described and an analysis of the evolution of the underlying concept of community participation is provided. The pilot experience was a dynamic process influenced by self-reflection of the research team, feedback from research partners and changes in the epidemiological context (provoked by two dengue outbreaks during the study period). Community participation evolved from being just one component in Aedes aegypti control directed by the health staff into a learning and empowering process for the people. This change in the concept of participation was reflected in different aspects of the pilot project such as the learning and evaluation processes. CONCLUSION: Empirical evidence from 5 years of research in the particular context of Cuba showed that moves towards community-based Aedes aegypti control are feasible. However, in order to be successful, community-based dengue prevention should be a social learning process, implying a transfer of power and responsibilities to local people. Actions undertaken must be oriented towards creating local capabilities, strengthening existing structures and organizations and promoting group work for learning participation from participation itself.  相似文献

During the dengue outbreak that struck Santiago de Cuba in 2006-2007, we conducted an observational study in the Mariana Grajales district, the former setting of a community trial for Aedes aegypti control. In the trial, community working groups (CWG) had been created in 29 randomly selected intervention house blocks, and routine vector control activities alone were conducted in the remaining 30 control blocks. The CWG elaborated and implemented with the population plans and activities to reduce Aedes infestation. They were still functional in 2006 and continued organizing community-based environmental management activities. The attack rate of dengue fever during the outbreak was 8.5 per 1000 inhabitants in the former intervention blocks and 38.1 per 1000 inhabitants in the control blocks, which corresponds to a relative risk of 4.5 (95% CI 3.1-6.5). There was a significantly higher proportion of unaffected intervention blocks, and affected blocks had on average substantially less cases than affected control blocks. This study indicates that community-based environmental management inserted in the routine A. aegypti control programme can not only sustainably curb vector infestation but also have an impact on dengue transmission.  相似文献

In Martinique, Aedes aegypti, the vector of dengue viruses has been the target of insecticide control for more than 35 years. Despite significant control efforts, dengue has become a major disease of public health concern. We conducted a population genetic analysis based on isoenzyme variations combined with an estimation of infection rate to a dengue virus among 26 Ae. aegypti samples. Aedes aegypti samples could be differentiated for their susceptibility to dengue infection (infection rates ranging from 42.8% to 98.6%) and showed important genetic variation (significant F(ST) values).  相似文献

Insect growth regulator (IGR), pyriproxyfen is a juvenile hormone analogue used in stored product insect pest and vector control programmes. It can be considered as an alternative source to conventional insecticides because of its specific activity against immature insects, low persistence in the environment and virtually nontoxic to mammals. So, in our laboratory the effect of Pyriproxyfen was evaluated against the late 3rd instar larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes aegypti to study the Concentration-mortality response and inhibition of adult emergence. The results showed that LC50 was 0.00084 ppm and 0.00166 ppm for Cx. quinquefasciatus and A. aegypti respectively. Toxicity of this insect compound extended till the adult emergence by inhibiting pupae formation up to 61.0% and 95.6% of adult emergence against Cx. quinquefasciatus. Likewise it affected 65.0% of pupal formation and 98.9% of adult emergence against A. aegypti. These results represent a promising strategy to use insect growth regulator, Pyriproxyfen for the instant, safe and successful improvement in the integrated vector control programme.  相似文献

Studies on the seasonal fluctuation of Aedes aegypti were undertaken in different localities of Delhi, during 2000. The Aedes aegypti population was found to be prevalent in all the localities in Delhi. Water coolers and tires were found to be the preferred breeding habitats of Aedes mosquitos in the city. Aedes aegypti, being hygroscopic, showed a phenomenon of annual pulsation. It tends to move to mother foci in the central areas of the city, which are humid in the dry season, and spread out during the wet season. Out of 103,778 houses surveyed, 20,513 houses and 3,547 containers were reported positive for Aedes aegypti. The house container, and Breteau indices were very high during the post-monsoon season. The container indicies was very high (17.7%) in the defence area in September 2000. The container index in the areas of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the New Delhi Municipal Committee (NDMC) were found to be high during the same period. The house index forAedes aegypti ranged from 0.1 to 7.4, 0.1 to 11.3, and 0.1 to 11.1 in the MCD, NDMC, and Defence areas, respectively.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To explore the perceptions about community participation in dengue fever control during formative research for a community project. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study was conducted in three health areas of the Santiago de Cuba municipality during the year 2000. Qualitative and quantitative techniques were used to explore the opinions of health professionals, community leaders and a random sample of 200 people living in the community. RESULTS: The health professionals who were interviewed judged that difficulties in Aedes aegypti control were due to lack of participation of the community and to limited knowledge of prevention methods. Community leaders considered that the population was poorly motivated.The randomly selected subjects who were interviewed did associate Aedes control with technological intervention.The authors identified barriers to acceptance of control program activities. In general, the concept of "participation" was interpreted as "collaboration". CONCLUSIONS: Our findings show that the community has transferred the responsibility for Aedes aegypti control to the health sector.There is an evident need for unifying the concepts of community participation, as well as for matching the interests of users and health care providers, in order to attain a significant social mobilization.  相似文献

Objective: To evaluate an essential oil with larvicide, adulticide and growth inhibitory activity against Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus and Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes, of medical importance. Methods: Standardized methodology by WHO was used to determine the levels of susceptibility of mosquito larvae exposed to the essential oil. To evaluate the adulticide activity with the essential oil at different doses, bottles were impregnated according to the methodology CDC. To determine the development inhibitory activity of Melaleuca quinquinervia(M. quinquinervia) oil in three mosquito species, third instar larvae were exposed to the LC_(50) and LC_(90) dose(calculated for each population) of M. quinquinervia oil in glass containers with a capacity of 500 mL. After 24 h exposure, the dead larvae were discarded. The mortality of larvae and pupae were recorded on a daily basis. Results: The calculated LC_(50) indicates an order of effectiveness of preferential oil for Culex quinquefasciatus(LC_(50)=0.002 1%), Aedes aegypti(LC_(50)=0.004 7%) and Aedes albopictus(LC_(50)=0.004 9%). Conclusions: The adulticide activity was achieved with impregnated bottles at 40 and 50 mg/mL with the three mosquitoes species. In larvae, a growth inhibition was detected when exposed to sublethal doses. The results indicate that M. quinquinervia is a plant with promising environmentally sustainable source for vector control.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of intact, mature and immature ookinetes of Plasmodium gallinaceum is compared with corresponding stages which have been damaged by Aedes aegypti extracts prepared during blood digestion. The study reveals some new details of ookinete ultrastructure. In particular the composition, development and mode of formation of the pellicle of plasmodial ookinetes is shown to be similar to that of other sporozoans. The pellicle is composed of three membranes, develops in the growing protrusion of the retort-shaped early ookinete and its inner layer is probably formed by fusion of peripheral vesicles. Staining with ruthenium red indicates the presence of a surface coat. Furthermore Golgi-like structures and lysosomes can be observed. After exposure to A. aegypti extracts the parasites exhibit signs of severe cell damage and degeneration, such as disintegration and vacuolization of the cytoplasm. Damage of the plasma membrane is demonstrated by its permeability for ruthenium red. Cell damage is particularly prominent in those cell parts which are not covered by the pellicle and therefore suggests a protective function for this structure.  相似文献

Objective: To record the human cases of dengue fever(DF) and investigate the Aedes mosquito species circulating during the Hanoi 2011 DF epidemics. Methods: 24 different outbreak points were recorded in 8 districts between August and December 2011. Results: 140 patients were hospitalized following dengue diagnostic with a predominance of males(59.3%) and the 15-34 age class. Only DENV-1(11.27%) and DENV-2(88.73%) serotypes were detected in human samples. Mosquito sampling performed in and around patients households revealed the predominance of Aedes aegypti(95.15%) versus Aedes albopictus(4.85%). There is a positive correlation between the population density of Aedes aegypti and the number of human cases and duration of outbreaks. Conclusions: This was not observed for Aedes albopictus. 3 pools of Aedes aegypti were positive with dengue virus, two with DENV-1 and one with DENV-2.  相似文献

Two highly active synthetic pyrethroid insecticides, lambdacyhalothrin and cypermethrin, were evaluated as thermal fogs against houseflies (Musca domestica Linnaeus) and mosquitos (Aedes aegypti Linnaeus). Lambdacyhalothrin (OMS 3021) showed an average of 2.5 times more knockdown activity and over 5 times more adulticidal activity than cypermethrin against Musca domestica and Aedes aegypti. These results demonstrate that lambdacyhalothrin is highly effective at very low rates as a thermal fog against Ae. aegypti and M. domestica. Commercially available formulations of 2.5% and 5% lambdacyhalothrin can be diluted either with water for ULV cold aerosol space-spraying or with diesel/kerosene for thermal fogging at recommended application rates of 0.5-1 g ai/ha for mosquito control and 2 g ai/ha for housefly control. Due to the very low rates of application, formulated products of lambdacyhalothrin are unlikely to present any acute hazards in normal use. The low dosages required to bring about rapid control of houseflies and mosquitos make this new pyrethroid insecticide particularly cost-effective. Coupled with its good residual activity (Jutsum et al, 1984), lambdacyhalothrin can be adopted as a powerful tool in integrated pest management program for the control of medically important pests and vectors.  相似文献

There is compelling evidence that Aedes aegypti distributes small numbers of eggs among many sites, and that this "skip oviposition" is a driver for dispersal. The behavior is compatible with published results of mark-release-recapture studies, although many of these have been interpreted as evidence for limited dispersal. Skip oviposition also extends the duration of the gonotrophic cycle, the key parameter in the use of parous rates to estimate physiologic age. In addition, contact with multiple oviposition sites was probably a factor in the remarkable success of "perifocal" treatments with DDT in the campaign to eradicate Ae. aegypti from the Americas and the mobility of the vector probably limits the efficacy of attempts to suppress dengue transmission by source reduction and "focal" treatments with aerosols. Innovative approaches that exploit or negate this behavior may be required before effective Ae. aegypti control can become a reality.  相似文献

We evaluated the ability of three mosquito species (Aedes caspius, Aedes detritus, Culex pipiens), collected in southern France and Tunisia, and of different laboratory-established colonies (Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, Aedes vexans, Anopheles gambiae, Culex pipiens, Culex quinquefasciatus) to disseminate two strains of Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV), the virulent ZH548 and the avirulent Clone 13. After feeding on an infectious blood meal at 10(8.5) plaque-forming units/mL, females were maintained at 30 degrees C for 14 days. Surviving females were tested for the presence of virus on head squashes. Disseminated infection rate corresponds to the number of females with disseminated infection among surviving females. Among field-collected mosquitoes, Cx. pipiens was the most susceptible species with disseminated infection rates ranging from 3.9% to 9.1% for French strains and up to 14.7% for Tunisian strains. Among laboratory-established colonies, Ae. aegypti from Tahiti exhibited the highest disseminated infection rates: 90% when infected with ZH548 and 72.6% with Clone 13. The presence of competent Cx. pipiens in southern France and Tunisia indicates the potential for RVFV epizootics to occur if the virus was introduced into countries of the Mediterranean basin.  相似文献
