Aim: This study determined changes in knee extensor and plantar flexor muscle volume during 29 days of bed rest with or without resistance exercise using a gravity‐independent flywheel ergometer. Methods: Seventeen men (26–41 years) were subjected to 29 days of bed rest with (n = 8) or without (n = 9) resistance exercise; Supine Squat (SS) and Calf Press (CP) performed every third day. Quadriceps and triceps surae muscle volume was determined before and after bed rest and force and power were measured during training. Prior to these interventions, reproducibility of this device for training and testing was assessed in 23 subjects who performed bilateral maximal concentric, eccentric and isometric (MVC) knee extensions and plantar flexions over repeated sessions with simultaneous measurements of force, power and electromyographic (EMG) activity. Results: Quadriceps and triceps surae muscle volume decreased (P < 0.05) 10 and 16%, respectively, after 29 days bed rest. Exercise maintained quadriceps volume and mitigated triceps surae atrophy. Thus, either muscle showed different response across subject groups (P < 0.05). Force and power output during training were either maintained (P > 0.05) or increased (P < 0.05). EMG amplitude in the training mode was similar (SS; P > 0.05) or greater (CP; P < 0.05) compared with that elicited during MVC. Peak force and power test‐retest coefficient of variation (CV) ranged 5–6% and 7–8% for SS and CP, respectively. Conclusion: The present data suggest that this resistance exercise paradigm counteracts quadriceps and abates the more substantial triceps surae muscle atrophy in bedridden subjects, and therefore should be an important asset to space travellers.  相似文献

AIM: The efficacy of a mechanical, gravity-independent resistance exercise (RE) system to induce strength gains and muscle hypertrophy was validated. Designed for space crew in orbit, this technique offers resistance during coupled concentric and eccentric actions by utilizing the inertia of a rotating flywheel(s), set in motion by the trainee. METHODS: Ten middle-aged (30-53 years) men and women performed four sets of seven maximal, unilateral (left limb) knee extensions two or three times weekly for 5 weeks. Knee extensor force and electromyographic (EMG) activity of the three superficial quadriceps muscles were measured before and after this intervention. In addition, with the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), volume of individual knee extensor and ankle plantar flexor muscles was assessed. RESULTS: Over the 12 training sessions, the average concentric (CON) and eccentric (ECC) force generated during exercise increased by 11% (P < 0.05). Likewise, maximal isometric strength (maximal voluntary contraction, MVC) at 90 and 120 degrees knee angle increased by (P < 0.05) 11 and 12% respectively, after training. Neither individual quadriceps muscle showed a change (P > 0.05) in maximal integrated EMG (iEMG) activity. Quadriceps muscle volume increased by 6.1% (P < 0.05). Although the magnitude of response varied, all individual quadriceps muscles showed increased (P < 0.05) volume after training. As expected, ankle plantar flexor volume of the trained limb was unchanged (P > 0.05). Likewise, MVC, CON and ECC force, iEMG and knee extensor and plantar flexor muscle volume were unaltered (P > 0.05) in the right, non-trained limb. CONCLUSION: The results of this study show that the present RE regimen produces marked muscle hypertrophy and important increases in maximal voluntary strength and appears equally effective as RE paradigms using gravity-dependent weights, in this regard.  相似文献

Skeletal muscle atrophy and strength loss induced by short-term simulated spaceflight are offset or attenuated by resistance exercise (RE). This study compared the effects of plantar flexor and knee extensor RE on muscle size and function in 17 healthy men (aged 26–41years) subjected to 90 days 6° head-down-tilt bed rest with (BRE; n=8) or without (BR; n=9) RE. The RE program consisted of coupled maximal concentric and eccentric actions in the supine squat (4 sets of 7 repetitions) and calf press (4×14) every third day employing a gravity-independent flywheel ergometer (FW). Prior to, and following bed rest, muscle volume was assessed using magnetic resonance imaging. Similarly, muscle strength and power and surface electromyographic (EMG) activity were determined during maximal actions using FW or isokinetic dynamometry. In BR, knee extensor and plantar flexor muscle volume decreased (P<0.05) 18% and 29%, respectively. Torque or force and power decreased (P<0.05) 31–60% (knee extension) and 37–56% (plantar flexion) while knee extensor and plantar flexor EMG activity decreased 31–38% and 28–35%, respectively following BR. Muscle atrophy in BRE was prevented (P>0.05; knee extensors) or attenuated (–15%; plantar flexors). BRE maintained task-specific force, power and EMG activity. The decrease in non-task-specific torque was less (P<0.05) than in BR. The present data imply that the triceps surae and quadriceps muscles show different responsiveness to long-term bed rest with or without resistance exercise. The results also suggest that designing in-flight resistance exercise protocols for space travellers is complex and must extend beyond preserving muscle only.  相似文献

AIM: The goal of this investigation was to test specific exercise and nutrition countermeasures to lower limb skeletal muscle volume and strength losses during 60 days of simulated weightlessness (6 degrees head-down-tilt bed rest). METHODS: Twenty-four women underwent bed rest only (BR, n = 8), bed rest and a concurrent exercise training countermeasure (thigh and calf resistance training and aerobic treadmill training; BRE, n = 8), or bed rest and a nutrition countermeasure (a leucine-enriched high protein diet; BRN, n = 8). RESULTS: Thigh (quadriceps femoris) muscle volume was decreased (P < 0.05) in BR (-21 +/- 1%) and BRN (-24 +/- 2%), with BRN losing more (P < 0.05) than BR. BRE maintained (P > 0.05) thigh muscle volume. Calf (triceps surae) muscle volume was decreased (P < 0.05) to a similar extent (P > 0.05) in BR (-29 +/- 1%) and BRN (-28 +/- 1%), and this decrease was attenuated (P < 0.05) in BRE (-8 +/- 2%). BR and BRN experienced large (P < 0.05) and similar (P > 0.05) decreases in isometric and dynamic (concentric force, eccentric force, power and work) muscle strength for supine squat (-19 to -33%) and calf press (-26 to -46%). BRE maintained (P > 0.05) or increased (P < 0.05) all measures of muscle strength. CONCLUSION: The nutrition countermeasure was not effective in offsetting lower limb muscle volume or strength loss, and actually promoted thigh muscle volume loss. The concurrent aerobic and resistance exercise protocol was effective at preventing thigh muscle volume loss, and thigh and calf muscle strength loss. While the exercise protocol offset approximately 75% of the calf muscle volume loss, modification of this regimen is needed.  相似文献

Summary Synergistic behaviour of triceps surae muscles (medial gastrocnemius-MG, lateral gastrocnemius-LG, soleus-SOL) during sustained submaximal plantarflexions was investigated in this study. Six male subjects were asked to sustain an isometric plantar flexor effort to exhaustion at two different knee angles. Exhaustion was defined as the point when they could no longer maintain the required tension. The loads sustained at 0 and 120 degrees of knee flexion represented 50% and 36% of their maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) respectively. MVC was measured at 0 degree knee flexion. During the contractions, electromyograms (EMG) from the surface of the triceps surae muscles were recorded. Changes in the synergistic behaviour of the triceps surae were assessed via partial correlations of the average EMG (AEMG) between three muscle combinations; MG/LG, MG/SOL, LG/SOL, and correlation between SOL/MG+LG and MG/SOL+LG. The latter combinations were based on either common fibre type or innervation properties. Two types of synergisms were identified: trade-off and coactivation. Trade-off and coactivation synergies were defined by significant (p<0.05) positive and negative correlations respectively. Coactivation synergism was found to occur predominantly under conditions of high load or reduced length of the triceps surae, and increased with the duration of the contraction. Trade-off synergism was evident when the muscles were at their optimum length and the loads sustained were submaximum. Complete shutdown of one muscle activity was ruled out. It is postulated that, in the absence of voluntary strategies on the part of the subjects, changes in the syznergistic behaviour of the triceps surae muscles, manifested through trade-off and coactivation, is dependent on the load placed on the muscle and the muscle effectiveness as characterized by the force/length curve.  相似文献

The effect of a 120-day period of bed rest on the mechanical properties of human triceps surae muscle was studied in a group of male volunteers (n = 6, mean age 38 years). The results shows that the contractile properties of skeletal muscle in response to disuse change considerably. Time to isometric peak tension of the triceps surae muscle increased from 120 (SEM 3.0) ms to 136 (SEM 2.9) ms (P < 0.01), half relaxation time from 92 (SEM 2.1) ms to 100 (SEM 1.6) ms (P < 0.05) and total contraction time from 440 (SEM 9.9) ms to 540 (SEM 18.7) ms (P < 0.001). Isometric twitch force (F t) decreased by a mean of 36.7% (P < 0.05), maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) and maximal force (F max) by a mean of 45.5% and 33.7%, respectively (P < 0.05-0.01). The valueF max:F t ratio increased by 3.6% (nonsignificant). The difference betweenF max and MVC, expressed as a percentage ofF max and referred to as force deficiency, has also been calculated. Force deficit increased by a mean of 60% (P < 0.001) after bed rest. Force-velocity properties of the triceps surae muscle calculated according to an absolute scale of voluntary and electrically evoked contraction development decreased considerably. The calculations of the same properties on a relative scale did not differ substantially from the initial physiological state. The results would suggest that muscle disuse is associated with both atrophy and a reduction in contractility in the development ofF max and decreased central (motor) drive. The change in the triceps surae muscle contractile velocity properties may indicate changes in the kinetically active state in the muscles.  相似文献

To determine the non-uniform surface mechanical activity of human quadriceps muscle during fatiguing activity, surface mechanomyogram (MMG), or muscle sound, and surface electromyogram (EMG) were recorded from the rectus femoris (RF), vastus lateralis (VL), and vastus medialis (VM) muscles of seven subjects during unilateral isometric knee extension exercise. Time- and frequency-domain analyses of MMG and of EMG fatigued by 50 repeated maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) for 3?s, with 3-s relaxation in between, were compared among the muscles. The mean MVC force fell to 49.5 (SEM 2.0)% at the end of the repeated MVC. Integrated EMG decreased in a similar manner in each muscle head, but a marked non-uniformity was found for the decline in integrated MMG (iMMG). The fall in iMMG was most prominent for RF, followed by VM and VL. Moreover, the median frequency of MMG and the relative decrease in that of EMG in RF were significantly greater (P?) than those recorded for VL and VM. These results would suggest a divergence of mechanical activity within the quadriceps muscle during fatiguing activity by repeated MVC.  相似文献

In elderly males muscle plantar flexor maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) torque normalised to muscle volume (MVC/VOL) is reduced compared to young males as a result of incomplete muscle activation in the elderly. The aim of the present study was to determine the influence of a 12-month resistance training programme on muscle volume, strength, MVC/VOL, agonist activation and antagonist coactivation of the plantarfexors in elderly males. Thirteen elderly males aged 70 years and over (range 70–82 years), completed a 12-month whole body resistance-training programme (TRN), training three times a week. Another eight males (range 18–30 years), who maintained their habitual physical activity for the same 12-month period as the TRN group acted as controls (CTRL). Isometric plantarflexor maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) torque increased in the TRN group by 20% (P<0.01), from 113.1±22.0 Nm to 141.5±19.2 Nm. Triceps surae volume (TS VOL) assessed using MRI, increased by 12%, from 796.3±78.9 cm3 to 916.8±144.4 cm3 . PF activation, measured using supramaximal double twitch interpolation, increased from 83.6±11.0% pre training, to 92.1±7.6% post training (P<0.05). Dorsiflexion MVC and antagonist coactivation (assessed using surface electromyography) did not change with training. Plantarflexor MVC torque normalized for triceps surae muscle volume (MVC/VOL) was 142.6±32.4 kN m–2 before training and 157.0± 27.9 kN m–2 after training (a non-significant increase of 8%). No significant change in any measurement was observed in the CTRL group. This study has shown that the gain in muscle strength in response to long-term (12-month) training in older men is mostly accounted for by an increased muscle volume and activation.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of 2 weeks of ankle joint immobilization on triceps surae neural activation, with particular emphasis on the potential differences between the monoarticular soleus and the biarticular gastrocnemius muscles. Seventeen male volunteers were divided into the immobilized group (IG, n=8) and the control group (CG, n=9). Elastic adhesive bandages and an ankle stabilization orthosis were used to immobilize the ankle joint only. The plantar flexor torque obtained during maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and after single, paired and tetanic stimuli applied at rest was measured. The associated EMG activity from the soleus and gastrocnemius muscles was also recorded, and their activation levels were estimated by means of the twitch interpolation technique. After immobilization, triceps surae maximal voluntary torque significantly decreased by 17% (P<0.001). Strength losses were accompanied by a decrement in activation level (–6%, average of the three techniques used) and in maximal 100 Hz tetanic force (–11%). A significant decrease in the soleus (–22%, P<0.05) but not in the gastrocnemius EMG activity, normalized to respective M-waves, was also found. It was concluded that the reduced voluntary torque output after immobilization could be attributed to both muscular and neural alterations. These latter selectively involved the monoarticular soleus muscle, while neural drive to the biarticular gastrocnemii, which had not been immobilized in their function as knee flexors, was preserved.  相似文献

Fifteen healthy men performed a 5-week training program comprising four sets of seven unilateral, coupled concentric–eccentric knee extensions 2–3 times weekly. While eight men were assigned to training using a weight stack (WS) machine, seven men trained using a flywheel (FW) device, which inherently provides variable resistance and allows for eccentric overload. The design of these apparatuses ensured similar knee extensor muscle use and range of motion. Before and after training, maximal isometric force (MVC) was measured in tasks non-specific to the training modes. Volume of all individual quadriceps muscles was determined by magnetic resonance imaging. Performance across the 12 exercise sessions was measured using the inherent features of the devices. Whereas MVC increased (P < 0.05) at all angles measured in FW, such a change was less consistent in WS. There was a marked increase (P < 0.05) in task-specific performance (i.e., load lifted) in WS. Average work showed a non-significant 8.7% increase in FW. Quadriceps muscle volume increased (P < 0.025) in both groups after training. Although the more than twofold greater hypertrophy evident in FW (6.2%) was not statistically greater than that shown in WS (3.0%), all four individual quadriceps muscles of FW showed increased (P < 0.025) volume whereas in WS only m. rectus femoris was increased (P < 0.025). Collectively the results of this study suggest more robust muscular adaptations following flywheel than weight stack resistance exercise supporting the idea that eccentric overload offers a potent stimuli essential to optimize the benefits of resistance exercise.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine whether the human gastrocnemius medialis (GM) fascicle length and pennation angle alter during a sustained submaximal isometric plantar flexion. Fourteen male subjects performed maximal voluntary plantar flexions (MVC) on a dynamometer before and after a fatiguing task. This task consisted of a sustained submaximal isometric fatiguing contraction (40% MVC) until failure to hold the defined moment. Ultrasonography was used to visualise the muscle belly of the GM. Leg kinematics were recorded (120 Hz) to calculate the joint moment using inverse dynamics. The exerted moments and the EMG signals from GM and lateralis, soleus and tibialis anterior were measured at 1,080 Hz. The root mean square (RMS) of the EMG signal of the three triceps surae muscles increased significantly (P0.05) between 17% and 28% with fatigue. Further, the fascicle length of the GM significantly decreased from 47.1±8.0 mm at the beginning to 41.8±6.7 mm at the end of fatigue and the pennation angle increased from 23.5±4.1° to 26.3±2.2° (P0.05). The changes in fascicle length and pennation angle of the GM during the contraction can influence the force potential of the muscle due to the force–length relationship and the force transmission to the tendon. This provides evidence on that an additional mechanical mechanism, namely tendon creep, can contribute to the increase in the EMG activity of the GM during submaximal isometric sustained contractions.  相似文献

The purposes of the present investigation were: to evaluate a possible use of changes in the mean spectral frequency (MSF) of the EMG power spectra as a measure of reflex cardiovascular responses originating from the muscles during static exercise; and to study the relation between muscle fibre composition, EMG, and the cardiovascular response. Heart rate (HR), arterial blood pressure (BP), myoelectric signal (EMG), and intramuscular temperature (Tm) were measured during prolonged static contractions in five healthy male subjects (25-44 yrs). Two studies were performed. In study I constant EMG contraction muscle force in the first 5 s of the knee-extensor contraction was set to 20% MVC, (maximal voluntary contraction), and in the rest of the 5 min contraction the myoelectric signal was kept constant by visual feedback from an oscilloscope. In study II, (constant force contraction) two 1 h 7% MVC isometric contractions of the elbow-flexors and extensors were performed on two separate days. During the 5 min constant EMG contraction, the force fell from 20 to 11% MVC, mean BP (MAP) increased from 97 +/- 5 to 120 +/- 4 mmHg (P less than 0.01), and the EMG MSF decreased from 87 +/- 16 to 66 +/- 9 Hz (P less than 0.01). The decrease in MSF was strongly correlated to the increase in MAP (r = 0.96, P less than 0.01). The intramuscular temperature showed a small increase from 34.3 degrees C to 35.3 degrees C (P less than 0.01). During the 1 h constant force contraction involving m. triceps, MAP increased from 104 +/- 10 to 120 +/- 12 mmHg, with a simultaneous decrease in the EMG MSF from 96 +/- 11 to 70 +/- 19 Hz and an increase in the EMG amplitude (247% of the initial value). In the contractions involving m. biceps, however, both MAP and EMG MSF remained almost unchanged, but EMG amplitude increased (197% of the initial value). Very modest changes in HR were observed: 63 +/- 6 to 66 +/- 6 beats min-1 and 61 +/- 5 to 59 +/- 7 beats min-1 in the contractions involving m. triceps and m. biceps, respectively. The intramuscular temperature increased simultaneously, 1.3 degrees C and 0.7 degrees C in m. triceps and m. biceps, respectively. We investigated the effects of 4 weeks of detraining subsequent to an 8-week electrostimulation (ES) training program on changes in muscle strength, neural and muscular properties of the knee extensor muscles. Nine male subjects followed the training program consisting of 32 sessions of isometric ES training over an 8-week period. All subjects were tested before and after 8 weeks of ES training, and were then retested after 4 weeks of detraining. Quadriceps muscle anatomical cross-sectional area (ACSA) was assessed by ultrasonography imaging. The electromyographic (EMG) activity and muscle activation (i.e., by means of the twitch interpolation technique) obtained during maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) were used to examine neural adaptations. After training, the knee extensor voluntary torque increased significantly by 26%. Torque gains were accompanied by an increase in vastii EMG activity normalized to respective M-wave (+43%), muscle activation (+6%) and quadriceps ACSA (+6%). After detraining, knee extensor MVC, vastii EMG activity, muscle activation and quadriceps ACSA decreased significantly by 9%, 20%, 5% and 3%, respectively. Also, the knee extensor MVC values remained significantly elevated (14%) above baseline levels at the end of the detraining period and this was associated with a larger quadriceps ACSA (+3%) but not with a higher neural activation. We concluded that the voluntary torque losses observed after detraining could be attributed to both neural and muscular alterations. Muscle size preservation could explain the higher knee extensor MVC values observed after the cessation of training compared to those obtained before training, therefore indicating that muscle size changes are slower than neural drive reduction.  相似文献

1. This study was undertaken to determine whether low-threshold cutaneous and muscle afferents from mechanoreceptors in the foot reflexly affect fusimotor neurons innervating the plantar and dorsiflexors of the ankle during voluntary contractions. 2. Recordings were made from 29 identified muscle spindle afferents innervating triceps surae and the pretibial flexors. Trains of electrical stimuli (5 stimuli, 300 impulses per second) were delivered to the sural nerve at the ankle (intensity: 2-4 times sensory threshold) and to the posterior tibial nerve at the ankle (intensity: 1.5-3 times motor threshold for the small muscles of the foot). The stimuli were delivered while the subject maintained an isometric voluntary contraction of the receptor-bearing muscle, sufficient to accelerate the discharge of each spindle ending. This ensured that the fusimotor neurons directed to the ending were active and influencing the spindle discharge. The effects of these stimuli on muscle spindle discharge were assessed using raster displays, frequencygrams, poststimulus time histograms (PSTHs) and cumulative sums ("CUSUMs") of the PSTHs. Reflex effects onto alpha-motoneurons were determined from poststimulus changes in the averaged rectified electromyogram (EMG). Reflex effects of these stimuli onto single-motor units were assessed in separate experiments using PSTHs and CUSUMs. 3. Electrical stimulation of the sural or posterior tibial nerves at nonnoxious levels had no significant effect on the discharge of the 14 spindle endings in the pretibial flexor muscles. The electrical stimuli also produced no significant change in discharge of 11 of 15 spindle endings in triceps surae. With the remaining four endings in triceps surae, the overall change in discharge appeared to be an increase for two endings (at latencies of 60 and 68 ms) and a decrease for two endings (at latencies of 110 and 150 ms). The difference in the incidence of the responses of spindle endings in tibialis anterior and in triceps surae was significant (P less than 0.05, chi 2 test). 4. For both triceps surae and pretibial flexor muscles the electrical stimuli to sural or posterior tibial nerves had clear effects on the alpha-motoneuron pool, whether assessed using surface EMG or the discharge of single-motor units. Based on EMG recordings using intramuscular wire electrodes, the reflex effects differed for the gastrocnemii and soleus. 5. Aim: To examine the effect of unweighting as a possible contributory factor to a reduced calf muscle volume on postural sway during quiet standing, changes in postural sway following bed rest with or without strength training were investigated. Methods: Twelve young men participated in a 20‐day bed‐rest study. Subjects were divided into a non‐training group (BR‐Con) and a strength training group (BR‐Tr). For the BR‐Tr group, training was comprised of dynamic calf‐raise and leg‐press exercises to maintain the muscle volume of the plantar flexors. Before and after bed rest, subjects maintained quiet standing in a barefoot position on a force platform with their eyes open or closed. During the quiet stance, foot centre‐of‐pressure (CoP) and the mean velocity of CoP was calculated. Muscle volume of the plantar flexors was computed using axial magnetic resonance images of the leg. Results: After the bed‐rest period, the muscle volume decreased in the BR‐Con group but not in the BR‐Tr group. The mean velocity of CoP as an assessment of postural sway, however, increased in both groups. These results indicate that the strength training during bed rest cannot counteract the increase in postural sway. Conclusion: We concluded that postural sway increases following 20 days of bed rest despite maintenance of the muscle volume of plantar flexors as the main working muscles for the human postural standing.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare the behaviour of electromyographic (EMG) power spectrum statistics, mean power frequency (MPF) and median frequency (MF), across increasing force levels of the soleus (SO), gastrocnemius medialis (GM) and gastrocnemius lateralis (GL) muscles. Surface EMG signals of these three muscles were recorded in 12 men and 10 women during both (1) ramp (single ongoing contractions with the force increasing linearly from 0 to 100% of the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC); and (2) step (steady force levels: 10, 20, 30, 40, 60 and 80% MVC) static (isometric) plantar flexions. Power spectral analysis of these signals was performed on single 256-ms windows at all of the above-mentioned force levels, for both types of contraction. The MF and MPF were calculated from each of the obtained spectra. A less pronounced increase in the MF or MPF was expected for the SO because of its higher type I fibre content. The main results are as follows: (1) similar behaviours were found in the value of MPF and MF across increasing force for the SO and GL muscles, while the GM gave rise to a different behaviour; (2) no difference was found between ramp and step contractions in the behaviour of either MF or MPF across force levels; and (3) different behaviours were observed between the MF and MPF across increasing force levels, for both ramp and step contractions. Our initial expectations were thus not confirmed. It is concluded that the present results support the hypothesis that the EMG power spectrum may be more sensitive to the diameter of the fibres than to the fibre type proportion of the triceps surae muscles. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the power spectrum statistics of a given muscle to the low-pass filter effect of its skin layer was also emphasized.  相似文献

The present study was designed to determine the relative contribution of the gastrocnemius muscle to isometric plantar flexor torque production at varying knee angles, while investigating the activation of the gastrocnemius muscle at standardised non-optimal lengths. Voluntary plantar flexor torque, supramaximally stimulated twitch torque and myoelectric activity (EMG) from the triceps surae were measured at different knee angles. Surface and intra-muscular EMG were recorded from the soleus muscle and the medial and lateral heads of the gastrocnemius muscle in 10 male subjects. With the ankle angle held constant, knee angle was changed in steps of 30° ranging from 180° (extended) to 60° (extreme flexion), while voluntary torque from a 5-s contraction was determined at 10 different levels of voluntary effort, ranging from 10% of maximal effort to maximal effort. To assess effort, supramaximal twitches were superimposed on all voluntary contractions, and additionally during rest. Maximal plantar flexor torque and resting twitch torque decreased significantly in a sigmoidal fashion with increasing knee flexion to 60% of the maximum torque at 180° knee angle. For similar levels of voluntary effort, the EMG root mean square (RMS) of gastrocnemius was less with increased knee flexion, whereas soleus RMS remained unchanged. From these data, it is concluded that the contribution of gastrocnemius to plantar flexor torque is at least 40% of the total torque in the straight leg position. The decrease of gastrocnemius EMG RMS with decreasing muscle length may be brought about by a decrease in the number of fibres within the EMG electrode recording volume and/or impaired neuromuscular transmission.  相似文献

The effects are reported of prolonged exposure to simulated microgravity (strict bed rest in an antiorthostatic position –?6° head-down tilt, HDT) on voluntary and electrically evoked contractions of the triceps surae muscle in men (n?=?6) and women (n?=?4). The subjects served as their own controls. Bed rest is a model that has commonly been used to simulate spaceflight. Measurements made in the control condition (10–8 days before the beginning of HDT) and after 120-days of HDT (on the 3rd day after it ended) included examination of the properties of isometric maximal voluntary contractions (MVC), isometric twitch contractions (Pt) and tetanic contractions (Po). After HDT, the MVC decreased by means of 44% and 33%, Pt by means of 36% and 11%, Po by means of 34% and 24%, in the men and the women, respectively. The difference between Po and MVC, expressed as a percentage of Po and referred to as force deficiency (FD), has also been calculated. The FD increased by means of 60% and 28.8% in the men and the women, respectively. Time-to-peak tension of the triceps surae muscle increased by means of 12% and 14% in the men and the women, respectively, but half-relaxation time decreased by means of 9% and 19%. Total contraction time increased by a mean of 23% in the men and decreased by a mean of 17% in the women. Force-velocity of properties of the triceps surae muscle calculated according to a relative scale of voluntary contraction development significantly decreased more in the women than the men. The calculations of the same properties of electrically evoked contraction development did not differ substantially from the initial physiological state. It can be concluded that not only were the contractile properties of the triceps surae muscle significantly different in the men and the women, but that the effects of exposure to simulated microgravity on these properties were also different. These differences may be explained by sex differences in the muscle tissue itself and in its maximal neural activition.  相似文献

Our purpose was to study central fatigue and its dependence on peripheral reflex inhibition during a sustained submaximal contraction of the triceps surae. In 11 healthy subjects, superimposed twitches, surface electromyograms (EMG) from the medial head of the gastrocnemius (MG) and soleus (SOL) muscles, maximal compound motor action potentials (Mmax), tracking error and tremor were recorded during sustained fatiguing contractions at a torque level corresponding to 30% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). When the endurance limit (401±91 s) of the voluntary contraction (VC-I) was reached, the triceps surae could be electrically stimulated to the same torque level for an additional 1 min in 10 of the 11 subjects. These subjects were then able to continue the contraction voluntarily (voluntary contraction II, VC-II) for another 85±48 s. At the endurance limit of VC-I, the superimposed twitch was larger than during the unfatigued MVC, while there was no significant difference between the twitch at the endurance limit of VC-II and MVC. The EMG amplitude of both MG and SOL at the endurance limit of VC-I was significantly less than that during the MVC. While the EMG amplitude of MG increased further during VC-II, SOL EMG remained unchanged, neither muscle reaching their unfatigued MVC values. This difference was diminished for SOL by taking into account its decrease in Mmax found during VC-II, and relative EMG levels approached their MVC values. These results clearly indicate that a higher voluntary muscle activation was achievable after 1 min of electrical muscle stimulation, which continued metabolic stress and contractile fatigue processes but allowed for supraspinal, muscle spindle and/or motoneuronal recovery. It is concluded that peripheral reflex inhibition of -motoneurons via small-diameter muscle afferents is of minor significance for the development of the central fatigue that was found to occur during the first voluntary contraction.  相似文献
