Family Communication and Innovativeness in Family Firms

This conceptual article seeks to address the heterogeneity of family firms in terms of their innovativeness by investigating business family communication dynamics. We use the established family communication constructs of conversation and conformity orientations to develop a typology of family firms in terms of innovativeness. We provide empirically testable propositions and present possible operationalizations for future research. In particular, we argue that supportive business families (i.e., families characterized by high conversation orientation and moderate conformity orientation) are associated with the highest levels of innovativeness in the family‐controlled firm. Through this article we hope to deepen our understanding of the relationship between family and firm levels of analysis, to develop a stronger bond between communication and innovative behavior, and to identify family‐related antecedents of heterogeneity in family firm innovativeness.

Uses and Abuses of Family of Origin Material in Family Therapy Supervision

There has been a parallel increase in family therapy practice and emphasis on family of origin material among social work students and practitioners. There has been no concomitant assessment of the use of family of origin material as a tool used in supervision. This article traces the evolution of family of origin material and how it must be applied differentially to promote learning about family practice.

Defining the Family in Family Medicine

Physicians and social workers in the family medicine setting anticipate that a substantial portion of their practice will consist of intact, nuclear families. This study examined that expectation by collecting data on age, sex, and marital status of the patients in a family practice residency. Two separate methods of sampling the practice were used, and each resulted in a different picture of the practice. A dramatic finding was that 9% of the patients with active medical charts consumed 45% of the medical care. WOmen and patients over age 40 were overrepresented in the sample of frequent-user patients. Social work implications are presented.     

The Supervision of Family of Origin Family Systems Treatment

The primary emphasis in the Family of Origin Family Systems treatment literature is upon theory and treatment. A review of the existing literature reveals relatively little regarding the teaching or supervision of this model. The paper presents an integrative approach which includes theory, experiential learning and supervision. The author discusses candidacy criteria and preparation of the client for this treatment approach. Finally, case material is presented to describe the supervision and utilization of this model in practice.
