Sixty-one isolates of Aeromonas spp. from the faeces of pigs, cows and a variety of associated environmental sources were examined for the characteristics that are reputed to have roles in pathogenicity. Most isolates of Aeromonas hydrophila were cytotoxic (96.4%) and were capable of producing cell elongation factor (75%) and haemagglutinins (67.9%). In contrast few of the Aeromonas caviae isolates produced these three markers (13.6%, 27.3% and 36.4% respectively). In general, Aeromonas sobria occupied an intermediate position (36.4%, 27.3% and 54.5%), but they did produce the highest mean invasion index for HEp-2 cells. Statistical analysis revealed significant associations between the carriage of these factors and it was clear that many isolates of aeromonads from water and animals possessed the full battery of putative virulence factors.  相似文献

This investigation was designed to determine the prevalence of Corynebacterium suis in the preputial diverticulum of pigs of various age groups, located in different parts of the U.K., and to demonstrate whether the organism is transmissible between male pigs. C. suis was isolated from almost 90% of 224 adult males, distributed among 25 pig units in widely separated regions of the country and in 96% of 66 pigs aged 5-6 months originating from six different herds in East Anglia. The rate of isolation of C. suis from younger pigs depended, at least in part, on the system of husbandry practised. Thus, in one herd, A, in which young pigs were maintained in comparative isolation, none of 26 pigs aged 5-8 weeks harboured C. suis; however, in the same herd, the organism was isolated from 77% of 64 pigs aged 9-15 weeks which were in close contact with male pigs aged up to 6 months. In another herd, B, in which individual litters were housed in the same pen from birth to 5 months of age, C. suis was isolated once from only one of 36 pigs in the age range 5-17 weeks, sampled on two occasions, with an interval of 5 weeks between each sampling.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The results of examinations of stools for Bacillus cereus among three unrelated groups of individuals are presented. The groups consisted of (1) healthy school-children aged 6-11 years in a rural region of South Africa examined during each of the four seasons of the year; (2) 15 healthy volunteers comprising staff of a London microbiology laboratory and their families examined on each of 3 consecutive weeks; (3) 75 unrelated young children, 2 months to 5 years of age, in a second rural region of South Africa examined during a pilot study of 1 week's duration on the aetiology of rural gastroenteritis. The stools of the last group were submitted as being related to present or recent diarrhoea in the respective children. In group 1, B. cereus isolation rates ranged from 24.3% at the autumn visit to 43% at the summer visit with a significantly higher rate of isolation in the summer than at other seasons of the year (P less than 0.05). B. cereus was isolated from 40% of group 2 volunteers on week 1, none on week 2 and 20% on week 3. The organism was detected in the 12 positive specimens at levels of approximately 10(2)/g and constituted 2.5-30% of the total aerobic spore-forming bacillus population in the stools. In group 3, B. cereus was recovered from 18.7% of the stool samples and was isolated consecutively with other pathogens (enteropathogenic Escherichia coli and rotavirus) on only five occasions. In groups 1 and 3, less than 5% of the stools had '3+' levels of B. cereus (greater than 10 colonies per direct plate culture). B. cereus was readily isolated from all of 10 food samples, representative of the typical diet of the group 1 individuals, and was present in substantial numbers (10(4) to 5.5 X 10(6)/g) in half of them. The isolation results, supported by serotyping, indicated that carriage of B. cereus in stools is transient and its presence at any one time reflects solely its intake with foods.  相似文献

The occurrence of Aeromonas spp. in a hospital water supply, in patients and in the local community was investigated. In healthy persons outside the hospital the isolation rate was 3.6% and among hospital patients it was 6%. Seven per cent of water samples yielded Aeromonas strains. Isolates were typed by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of sulphur-35 methionine labelled proteins of Aeromonas isolates. No relationship between water and human isolates could be established, even when a strain of A. hydrophila producing Vero cell cytotoxin contaminated enteral feeds given to patients in the intensive care unit.  相似文献

Bacteroides spp. were isolated from the faeces of neonates and identified by rapid modifications of established conventional methods. Gram-negative anaerobic bacilli were recovered from 12 out of 16 neonates and a heavy growth of Bacteroides spp. was obtained from all 12 specimens. Twelve representative isolates from each subject were selected for identification; 141 of the 144 Bacteroides isolates belonged to the B. fragilis group and three to the B. melaninogenicus/oralis group. Eight species were represented within the B. fragilis group. B. vulgatus (c. 46%) and B. thetaiotaomicron (c. 30%) were the predominant species. B. fragilis, the type-species of the group, formed only a small proportion of neonatal faecal flora. The proportional representation of individual species were similar to that found in adults but B. asaccharolyticus was not represented.  相似文献

The aerobic faecal flora of 953 infants aged over 5 days was studied on discharge from 22 neonatal wards in Swedish hospitals. Klebsiella/enterobacter was isolated from 74% of infants and dominated the aerobic gram-negative flora in 19 wards. Escherichia coli was carried by 42% and showed a slight dominance in two wards. Initially klebsiella/enterobacter dominated the flora but became increasingly mixed with and taken over by E. coli, carriage increasing from 21% in infants discharged after 5-7 days to 57% after 3 weeks or later. Among infants with E. coli, P-fimbriated strains were demonstrated in 23% (range 0-67) and were independent of age. Occasional clustering of such strains was observed in 3/22 wards during the study period. It is postulated that the general and local colonization patterns observed reflect differences between individual strains of E. coli and klebsiella in both their capacity for transmission and their persistence in the newborn gut. The role of P-fimbriae in intestinal colonization of neonates by E. coli was, however, not supported.  相似文献
