This study was undertaken to compare the attitudes of nurses and nursing students toward computer use in nursing practice and to clarify factors that influence these attitudes. Three factors within the student sample were examined: changes over time, prior experience with computers, and attitudes toward technology in general. Second, the attitudes of the nursing students were compared with those of a sample of practicing nurses. Finally, the multidimensional structure of Stronge's attitude scale was analyzed. A total of 353 sophomore nursing students and 358 staff nurses participated in the study. The analysis produced a refined 17-item attitude scale composed of three identifiable subscales: computers and patient care, computers and personal security, and general attitude. It was found that students had less experience with computers than the investigators had anticipated, and there was little change over three successive cohorts of students. However, in general, students' attitudes toward computer use in nursing were positive, and the more computer experience students had, the more positive their attitudes. The attitudes of the practicing nurses also were generally positive, but differences between students and nurses were observed.  相似文献

This longitudinal study examined how nursing students' moral judgment changes after they become qualified nurses working in a hospital environment. The sample used was a group of 80 nursing students attending a university in Suwon, Korea, between 2001 and 2003. By using a Korean version of the Judgment About Nursing Decisions questionnaire, an instrument used in nursing care research, moral judgment scores based on Ketefian's six nursing dilemmas were determined. The results were as follows: (1) the qualified nurses had significantly higher idealistic moral judgment scores than the nursing students; (2) the qualified nurses showed significantly higher realistic moral judgment scores than the nursing students; and (3) when comparing idealistic and realistic moral judgment scores, both the qualified nurses and the nursing students had higher scores for idealistic moral judgment. Further study is recommended to examine changes in moral judgment.  相似文献

AimsTo describe the contribution of nursing students to clinical settings based on the perceptions of nurse preceptors and to examine whether certain characteristics of nurses’ professional activity are associated with a positive perception of nursing students.BackgroundMost clinical agencies receive many nursing students each year, who acquire clinical competencies under the guidance of a registered nurse preceptor. However, there is limited evidence of the contributions made by nursing students during clinical placements.MethodsA multi-center cross-sectional study was carried out between June and December 2019. A convenience sample of Registered Nurses (n = 927) was recruited from four public hospitals in Spain. The Nursing Student Contributions to Clinical Settings' questionnaire was used. In addition, sociodemographic, work and teaching activity variables were collected. Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine the variables associated with positive student contributions.ResultsThe nursing student contributions were deemed favorable by 70.7% of the nurse preceptors, mainly because the nursing students are future professionals who know the center, support the development of the nurses' teaching role and constitute a link between the health center and the university. Certain professional characteristics of the Registered Nurses were significantly associated with a positive perception of the contributions of nursing students: having daily coffee breaks (Odds ratio: 2.60; 95% Confidence interval:1.27–5.32), high levels of professional satisfaction (Odds ratio: 2.13; 95% Confidence interval:1.21–3.75) and work in medical-surgical units (Odds ratio: 1.62; 95% Confidence interval: 1.08–2.41). In contrast, nurses with greater work experience (≥ 30 years) (Odds ratio: 0.48; 95% Confidence interval: 0.27–0.85) and who worked at units where 10 or more students perform clinical practice (Odds ratio: 0.57; 95% Confidence interval: 0.36–0.90) were associated with a lower probability of positive perceptions.ConclusionsIn Spain, the contributions made by nursing students to clinical settings are favorable, both for the nursing profession and for healthcare institutions. Their contributions are influenced by the professional characteristics of the Registered Nurses, as well as the environment and the teaching activity within the units.  相似文献

BackgroundThe requirement for clinical teaching and supervision of undergraduate nursing students is a continual high volume, high impact essential requirement of registered nursing staff. Nurses are integral in facilitating the learning of nursing students in the practice environment to deliver quality safe care. However nurses engaged in teaching and supervising nursing students have unique challenges.ObjectiveTo understand how well recognised, prepared, and supported nurses perceive they are to teach and supervise undergraduate nursing students in the practice environment?MethodsNurses from 12 different wards of two hospitals were invited to participate in the study. A sequential mixed methods approach comprising hard-copy questionnaires, completed by 59 nurses, and six focus groups. Four feedback sessions verified findings.ResultsA low level of recognition and support for the amount of time available to nurses to teach and supervise was reported from both survey and focus group data. Four themes emerged from focus groups. Nurses recognised their role to teach and supervise students; The role in teaching and supervision was not recognised at a system level; Nurses could be more prepared to teach and supervise students; and Nurses required more support for their role in teaching and supervising students. A major challenge was the low level of support nurses perceived from the education sector in preparing students for placements. The nurses reported a disconnection of components of the student placement system, which was difficult to negotiate when undertaking this teaching and supervision role.ConclusionThe complex practice environment, where nursing student numbers are increasing and nurses have to navigate an often disconnected student placement system, requires a rethink of the precentorship or buddy one-to-one model of clinical placement. Addressing these challenges will be an essential step in protecting the interests of the public, nurses and nursing profession.  相似文献

The first COVID-19 case was confirmed in China in December 2019, and countries around the world rapidly diagnosed new cases from January 2020 onwards. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared an international emergency, characterising it as a pandemic in March 2020. In Spain, final-year Medicine and Nursing students were recruited to reinforce the healthcare system.Using a qualitative phenomenological approach we aimed to clarify the experiences of these final-year year nursing students employed to provide nursing care during the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain. A total of 20 interviews were conducted with final-year students from six universities who were employed by Catalan Hospitals.Data was analyzed using Colaizzi's method. Analysis identified the meta-category ‘feeling the commitment’ from the interaction of two categories, ‘facing the unknown’ and ‘being and feeling like a nurse’, and five subcategories. Students felt highly committed to fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, volunteering to work as nurses despite facing the unknown and not yet having finished their studies. Future Spanish nursing programmes should include ‘pandemic and disaster management’ content to increase students' preparedness for such scenarios.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Nursing has dealt with sexual harassment long before the term was coined during the 1970s. The current study investigated sexual harassment of nurses and nursing students in Israel following new legislation against sexual harassment in the workplace. METHODS: A self-report questionnaire was administered to 281 nurses and 206 nursing students (80% women) from five medical centres in Israel. Seven types of sexual harassment behaviour patterns were evaluated. FINDINGS: Frequency of sexual harassment decreased as the behaviour became more intimate and offensive. Ninety percent of subjects reported experiencing at least one type of sexual harassment and 30% described at least four types. A significant difference was found between nurses and nursing students. Furthermore, "severe" types of behaviour were experienced by 33% of nurses, in comparison with 23% of nursing students. Women were significantly more exposed than men to "mild" and "moderate" types of sexual harassment, while 35% of men vs. 26% of women were exposed to "severe" types of harassment. However, women responded significantly more assertively than men to "severe" sexual harassment. CONCLUSIONS: Particular attention is needed when sexual harassment occurs to male students and nurses because they may be subjected to the more offensive sexual conducts and at the same time may lack the ability to respond assertively.  相似文献

Registered nurses and nurse educators are often unaware of how nursing students experience the nursing profession. In the current practice climate of increased workloads, reduced funding, and higher patient acuity, nurse educators are likely to hear from colleagues how unprepared newly qualified nurses are for the needs of practice. It is difficult for many nursing students to see value in their practice because they become preoccupied with their perceived lack of knowledge and technical skills. Nurses and nurse educators should be aware of how this brands new graduates and informs their sense of developing professional identity. Despite their feelings of deficit in terms of skills and knowledge, it is clear that many nursing students are, in fact, effectively negotiating relational ethics. This article presents a collaborative account of the important relational work being undertaken by one group of nursing students in New Zealand.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of staff nurses towards associate degree (AD) nursing students. The null hypothesis stated there will be no significant difference in the attitudes of staff nurses towards AD nursing students and associated concepts (nursing education, patient, physician, work, nurse.) The staff nurse's value as a role model is held in high regard yet little regard is given to her attitudes towards students. Through better understanding of staff nurses' attitudes, nurse educators can better plan, develop and coordinate clinical activities to provide an optimum learning environment. The findings showed the concept AD nursing student was significantly different from the rest, indicating a less positive attitude towards the AD nursing student than the related concepts. Implications for nursing practice are threefold. Nurse administrators must create an atmosphere and a philosophy which support the educational process within their institution, and recognize nurses' attitudes towards students. Practising nurses should examine their attitudes and willingness to work with students if their hospital offers their agency as a clinical facility. Educators must look closely at the units they assign students to, continually maintaining the lines of communication between staff nurses and clinical instructors. As service and education work together a quality environment can be provided in which there is optimum learning for the student. Both groups then contribute to the future of professional nursing.  相似文献

Perceptions of nursing students on men entering nursing as a career.   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of nursing students who were enrolled in an under-graduate nursing programme in a rural university, on men entering nursing as a career. Questionnaires were returned by 38 males (63%) and 117 females (50%). The major findings were that male nursing students intend to work in specialty areas such as emergency nursing, operating room nursing and intensive care. Both male and female nursing students perceived that the public displayed an increasing respect and acceptance of male nurses. Differences between male and female nursing students were evident in demographic characteristics, course interests, career aspirations, motivating factors and barriers associated with males choosing a nursing career.  相似文献

Nurses are playing a vital role in caring for patients. However, this can be very emotionally taxing. In two studies, professional nurses and nursing students from two different countries (Spain and United States) were compared on different measures-objective and self-perspective-taking, personal distress, and emotional impact—when facing different types of patients who suffered from the same illness: One terminally ill and one non-terminal. Results showed that the type of patient (terminal vs. non-terminal) only affected significantly the nursing students, who reported a higher self-perspective taking, personal distress, and emotional impact when the patient was terminal. Nursing students, compared to professional ones, seem to be more vulnerable to the type of patient they care for as they exhibited higher levels of negative emotional experience when the patient described was terminal. The significant implications are discussed.  相似文献

This study focused on nursing journal clubs as an intervention in promoting evidence-based nursing. Nursing journal clubs refer to arranged meetings where nurses convene to discuss the use of research knowledge in nursing practice. Researchers and directors of a university hospital planned the intervention. The study aimed to assess learning and utilization of research knowledge after implementation of nursing journal clubs from the perspective of nursing students. In journal clubs, answers were sought from scientific nursing articles to solve nursing problems specified by each ward/outpatient unit. Nursing students paired up to make an oral presentation of a research article to staff nurses. After the presentation, they acted as chairpersons in the discussion. The students had a vocational nursing diploma and were aiming at bachelor's degree in nursing. After the final club meeting, the students (n = 53) responded to a questionnaire. The results indicated that the students were not able to utilize the studies to the same extent as they learnt from them. Age, work experience and participation in research and development activities were connected to learning. Despite limitations, the results may be used to develop nursing journal clubs as a learning and collaboration method between nurse education and health care.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the factors which can lead to the labelling of students in nursing. It commences with some of the considerations involved when one elects to enter a profession. This is examined in the light of changing ideologies about the ways in which it is believed that nurses should be taught and whether teaching aims to train or educate nurses. This analysis is applied to the issues that arise in terms of labelling students, and the possible subsequent effects on the students' capacity to succeed. The continuing dissonance inside the educational environment and between education and clinical practice are proposed as contributory factors in the processes that can lead to student frustration and disenchantment. Finally, some suggestions are made to attempt to address these issues.  相似文献
