North West Group Society for Occupational Medicine: a retrospective view

Professor Nicola Cherry has taken the Chair of OccupationalMedicine at Manchester University. At a unique event on 28 February1991, the three Emeritus Professors met Professor Cherry ata meeting held at the A.M.I. Alexandra Hospital, Cheadle, Manchester.The meeting organized by the North West Group of the SOM, includeda tour of the hospital followed by a buffet supper. ProfessorLane (now aged 94) introduced Professor Cherry who gave a talkon her first impressions on return from McGill University andher future objectives. Over 70 members of the SOM, BOHS andRCN Greater Manchester Group of OH nurses attended.     

Education in Occupational Medicine

The Society of Occupational Medicine was one of the organizations invited to submit evidence to the Royal Commission on Medical Education. Printed below is a résumé of the memorandum the Society submitted and of the Royal Commission's recommendations. The Society's reactions to the Royal Commission's views then follow. *     

人细胞色素P450基因多态性与职业医学实践

癌症的发生大多与环境化学因素有关,就职业环境而言,从业人员长期暴露于一些较高浓度的外源化学物质环境中,这些物质在工作场所通过呼吸道、消化道、皮肤等途径进入机体,在大多数情况下,先经由细胞色素P450酶(cytochrome P450,CYP)催化的Ⅰ相反应活化后,由前致癌物转化为致癌物,与生物大分子发生加合,造成基因损伤,启动化学致癌过程.目前已知的环境化学物质至少达20万种以上,绝大部分是各种细胞色素P450的底物,有些还作为诱导物或阻抑物而起作用[1].

Residency Training in Occupational Medicine

Adding oxygen (O₂) to an exercise laboratory at a rate of about 14 liters/min produced an atmosphere with a measurably higher O₂ concentration (FO₂ ≈ 0.2110) than normal ([Fl_O2 ] = 0.2093). Assuming Fl_O2 to be 0.2093 instead of its actual value led us to calculate an erroneously small [vdot]O₂ consumption ([vdot]O₂).
