To determine whether there are characteristic changes in event-related potentials (ERPs) in parkinsonian syndromes we studied 8 patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), 10 patients with corticobasal degeneration (CBD), 9 patients with striatonigral degeneration (SND), and 16 patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) with a mean duration of illness shorter than 5 years in each group. A visual oddball paradigm was employed to elicit P300. P300 to the rare target and rare nontarget stimuli and reaction time (RT) to rare target stimuli in each group were compared with those in the corresponding age-matched normal control group and to each other after age correction. The correlation of P300 and RT to motor disability score was also studied. In PSP P300 amplitude was markedly reduced while in CBD P300 latency was prolonged. P300 amplitude to rare nontargets in SND and PD was attenuated. The mean RT in the PSP and the CBD group was significantly longer than in the other two groups. The mean RT in PD and P300 amplitude to rare nontargets in both CBD and PD showed significant correlation with the severity of motor disability. Simultaneous measurement of P300 and RT may yield useful supplementary information in facilitating diagnosis of parkinsonian syndromes in addition to clinical criteria. BACKGROUND: Clinicians have long recognized that psychopaths show deficits in cognitive function, but there have been few experimental studies exploring these deficits. We present here the first in a series of event-related potential (ERP) experiments designed to elucidate and characterize the neural correlates of cognitive processes of psychopaths. METHODS: We recorded ERPs from a topographic array from 11 psychopathic and 10 nonpsychopathic prison inmates, assessed with the Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised, during performance of a visual oddball task. ERPs to target (25% of trials) and nontarget (75% of trials) visual stimuli were analyzed. RESULTS: Consistent with previous research, there were no group differences in the latency or amplitude of the ERPs for the nontarget stimuli. For nonpsychopaths, the P300 amplitude was larger when elicited by the target stimuli than when elicited by the nontarget stimuli. In contrast, psychopaths failed to show reliable P300 amplitude differences between the target and nontarget conditions. Psychopaths had a smaller amplitude P300 to target stimuli than did nonpsychopaths. In addition, the amplitude of the P300 was less lateralized in psychopaths than in nonpsychopaths. Psychopaths also had a larger centrofrontal negative wave (N550) during the target condition than did nonpsychopaths. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study indicate that there are substantial differences between psychopaths and others in the processing of even simple cognitive tasks and provide support for information processing models of psychopathy.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Target/standard discrimination difficulty was manipulated systematically to assess how this variable affects target and nontarget P300 scalp distributions for both auditory and visual stimuli. DESIGN AND METHODS: A 3-stimulus paradigm (target, standard, nontarget) was employed in which subjects (n = 16) responded only to an infrequently occurring target stimulus. The perceptual discrimination difficulty between the target and more frequently occurring standard stimuli was varied as Easy or Difficult in different conditions, while holding the nontarget stimulus properties constant. RESULTS: When target/standard discrimination was Easy, P300 amplitude was larger for the target than the nontarget across all electrode sites, and both demonstrated parietal maximums. In contrast, when target/standard discrimination was Difficult, target amplitude (P3b) was larger parietally and occurred later than nontarget components, whereas nontarget amplitude (P3a) was larger and earlier than the target P300 over the frontal electrode sites. Similar outcomes across task conditions were obtained for both auditory and visual stimuli. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that target/standard discrimination difficulty, rather than stimulus novelty, determines P3a generation for both auditory and visual stimulus modalities.  相似文献

Amplitude reduction of the P300 event-related potential has long been suggested as a marker for schizophrenia. However, recent research has shown that this reduction in the P300 amplitude is not specific to schizophrenia as it can also be observed in related illnesses such as bipolar disorder. Due to this lack of specificity the P300 elicited using traditional oddball paradigms may be a less valuable endophenotypic marker. The current study employed a cognitively demanding three-stimulus oddball paradigm to elicit the P300 to visual target and distracting stimuli. Patients with schizophrenia showed amplitude reductions of P300 components to targets, distractors and frequent stimuli. The P300 in patients with bipolar disorder was not significantly different from either group. The pattern of results may further the understanding of the nature of the impairment in schizophrenia.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The P300 event-related brain potential (ERP) was elicited with auditory and visual stimuli in a separate session of a 3 stimulus oddball paradigm, and the scalp topography was assessed with 15 electrode locations. METHODS: Target (0.10), standard (0.80), and infrequent non-target (0.10) stimuli in the auditory task were 2000, 1000 and 500 Hz tone, and in the visual task, 'X', 'O', and 'H', respectively. The stimuli were presented in a random series, once every 2 s, and participants responded only to the target (N = 12). RESULTS: Target stimuli elicited larger P300 components than non-target did in both stimulus modalities. For both target and non-target stimuli, P300 amplitude was larger and latency longer for the visual compared with the auditory stimulus. Analysis of normalized P300 amplitude data indicated that the target and non-target P300s from both modalities had identical topography. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that both target and non-target stimuli in 3 stimulus oddball paradigm elicited the same type of P300 (P3b) for both stimulus modalities.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: The effects of instructions to refrain from blinking on the P300 event-related brain potential (ERP) from auditory and visual stimuli were assessed. METHODS: An oddball paradigm was employed in which young adult subjects (n = 20) silently counted the infrequent target stimuli and were given either no instructions or told "do not blink" in different conditions, with auditory and visual stimulus tasks employed for all subjects. ERPs were recorded from the midline electrodes, with amplitude and latency of the P300 and other components obtained. RESULTS: P300 amplitude for both modalities and target/standard stimulus conditions was smaller and visual peak latency longer in the "do not blink" condition. Blink instructions did not directly affect the other components. CONCLUSIONS: Instructions to refrain from blinking can decrease P300 amplitude and can increase peak latency.  相似文献

Visual p300 effects beyond symptoms in concussed college athletes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In order to assess whether cerebral anomalies may be observed in the absence of clinical symptoms, the current study compared the effects of concussions on attentional capacities (reaction times, accuracy) and Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) in concussed athletes with (n = 10) or without (n = 10) symptoms as well as in athletes who never had a concussion (n = 10). The P300 response was recorded from 28 electrodes during a modified visual oddball paradigm. Participants were instructed to press a key upon the appearance of the frequent stimuli as well as when a rare nontarget stimulus followed the frequent one. The other key was to be pressed when the subsequent rare stimuli (rare target) appeared until a frequent one reappeared. The symptomatic athletes displayed longer reaction times than the other two groups of athletes. The P300 amplitude to the rare target stimuli was significantly more attenuated in the symptomatic athletes than in the other two groups. Moreover, the P300 amplitude varied inversely with the severity of post-concussion symptoms but was not influenced by time elapsed since injury. Although the clinical significance of the P300 differences shown by the symptomatic athletes is still uncertain, the results do indicate that symptom severity may be a crucial indicator of functional impairments following mild traumatic brain injury.  相似文献

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the properties of a new modification of the classical auditory oddball paradigm (auditory oddball paradigm combined with passive visual stimulation, AERPs + VEPs) and compare the scalp topography obtained with the new paradigm and the classical auditory oddball paradigm (AERPs) in healthy humans. The responses to bimodal stimulation, and to the classical oddball paradigm were similar to those reported in other studies in terms of location, amplitudes, and latencies of P1, N1, P2, N2, and P300. The new modification of the oddball paradigm produced P300 at fronto-central locations in contrast to centro-parietal locations during the classical oddball paradigm. The amplitudes and latencies of P300 were also significantly larger during the new than the classical paradigm. Furthermore, the amplitudes of N1 and P2, but not N2 were significantly higher and differed in location during the new paradigm in response to both target and standard stimuli. The latencies of all three waves were significantly longer and the latency of P2 differed in location between the new and the classical paradigms in response to only the standard stimuli. The results of this study suggest that the new modification of the classical oddball paradigm produces different neural responses to the classical oddball paradigm. Therefore, this modification can be used to investigate dysfunctions in sensory and cognitive processing in clinical samples.  相似文献

The P300 wave of the human event-related potential.   总被引:30,自引:0,他引:30
The P300 wave is a positive deflection in the human event-related potential. It is most commonly elicited in an "oddball" paradigm when a subject detects an occasional "target" stimulus in a regular train of standard stimuli. The P300 wave only occurs if the subject is actively engaged in the task of detecting the targets. Its amplitude varies with the improbability of the targets. Its latency varies with the difficulty of discriminating the target stimulus from the standard stimuli. A typical peak latency when a young adult subject makes a simple discrimination is 300 ms. In patients with decreased cognitive ability, the P300 is smaller and later than in age-matched normal subjects. The intracerebral origin of the P300 wave is not known and its role in cognition not clearly understood. The P300 may have multiple intracerebral generators, with the hippocampus and various association areas of the neocortex all contributing to the scalp-recorded potential. The P300 wave may represent the transfer of information to consciousness, a process that involves many different regions of the brain.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of conceptual similarity between target and nontarget stimuli on the P300 component of event-related potentials using a multi-stimulus oddball paradigm. The stimuli were pictures of three objects and their corresponding Chinese and English words. The pictures and their corresponding Chinese and English words were considered to the target stimulus, respectively. The experiments elucidate that imagery and verbal information are processed by distinct but interconnected systems.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Visual event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were elicited using a 3-stimulus oddball paradigm to assess the P3a with passive stimulus processing. METHODS: Young adults (n=12) were presented with a series of visual stimuli consisting of a solid circle standard stimulus (P=0.76) that was difficult to discriminate from a larger target circle (P=0.12), with a large square distractor stimulus (P=0.12) presented randomly in the series. Subjects were instructed in the passive condition to simply look at the stimuli and in the active condition to press a mouse key only to the target stimulus. ERPs were recorded from 15 scalp electrodes, with the amplitude and latency of the P300 from the distractor and target stimuli assessed. RESULTS: The P3a from the distractor stimulus was similar in amplitude, scalp topography, and peak latency across the passive and active task conditions. The P3b from the target stimulus demonstrated much smaller amplitude, highly altered scalp topography, and longer latency for the passive compared to active task conditions. CONCLUSIONS: The P3a can be obtained with visual stimuli in the 3-stimulus paradigm under passive viewing conditions. Theoretical implications and clinical applications are discussed.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The perception of bodily signals ("interoceptive awareness") was found to modulate evoked potential components, especially the P300, in response to emotional pictures and to internal signals. It remains an open question whether this variable is related to more elaborated information processing in general. METHODS: The present study investigated the relationship between heartbeat perception and the amplitude of the P300 to target stimuli in a visual oddball paradigm. RESULTS: Interoceptive awareness was positively correlated with the P300 amplitude at Cz which remained significant after controlling for anxiety differences. CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrate a positive relationship between interoceptive awareness and the attentive processing of visual stimuli. SIGNIFICANCE: Interoception is related to more elaborated information processing in general. This effect could be mediated by arousal differences and might rely on common neuroanatomical structures.  相似文献

Twenty patients with major depressive disorder were studied with evoked potential (EP) topographic mapping after receiving placebo, imipramine, or amoxapine for 2 days in a random-assignment, double-blind design. Patients performed the Continuous Performance Test (CPT), a visual vigilance test. The stimuli were the digits 0-9, with 0 a target to be responded to with a button press. EPs were recorded from 32 channels and were averaged separately for detected and undetected targets and for false positives and correctly identified nontargets (no button press). Twenty-one normal controls were also tested. Amoxapine enhanced N120 amplitude in midline parietal and right parietal cortex where selective attention effects have been found to be greatest in studies of normal controls. Both amoxapine and imipramine enhanced differences in P200 between target and nontarget stimuli in comparison to placebo, with amoxapine differences again being greatest over midline parietal locations. CPT performance was significantly better on amoxapine than placebo.  相似文献

Visual event-related potentials were recorded from five male autistics and five matched controls. Sensory effects were investigated by having subjects passively view flashes of three different but equiprobable intensities (augmenting/reducing paradigm). Cognitive effects were examined by having subjects count infrequent, target, flashes of one intensity embedded within a series of frequent, nontarget, flashes of a different intensity (oddball paradigm). In the augmenting/reducing paradigm, the sensory N100 wave of autistic but not controls showed a significant increase in amplitude (augmenting) as flash intensity increased. The cognitive P300 wave of autistics did not differ from controls in the oddball paradigm. Unlike controls, autistics had an equally large P300 in the no-task augmenting/reducing paradigm. It is concluded that autistics may experience a degree of stimulus overload in the visual modality.A preliminary version of these data was presented at the Twenty-Fourth Annual Meeting of the Society for Psychophysiological Research, Milwaukee, October 1984. The work was supported in part by a grant from the Moody Foundation.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: This study investigated attentional allocation in 39 Vietnam combat veterans, 25 with and 14 without posttraumatic stress disorder, assessing P300 amplitudes and latencies during both three-tone and novelty "oddball" tasks. METHODS: The three-tone oddball task consisted of three stimuli: frequent tones (85%), rare target tones (7.5%), and rare distractor tones (7.5%). The novelty oddball task was identical to the three-tone task except that the rare distractor tones were replaced with nonrepeating novel sounds (7.5%). RESULTS: Combat veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder showed significant P300 amplitude enhancements at frontal sites in response to distracting stimuli during the novelty but not during the three-tone oddball tasks. There were no amplitude differences in target tones during either task. CONCLUSIONS: The data suggest that combat veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder demonstrate P300 responses consistent with a heightened orientation response to novel, distracting stimuli. This finding is consistent both with the clinical presentation of the disorder and with theoretical notions that individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder demonstrate information-processing biases towards vague or potentially threatening stimuli.  相似文献

A visual oddball paradigm and an S1-S2 paradigm were employed to evoke event-related potentials (ERPs) in 38 nondemented Parkinson's disease (PD) patients and 24 healthy elderly subjects. Delayed N200 and reduced P300 amplitude in the whole PD sample were only found in the S1-S2 paradigm. Delayed N200 and reaction time in PD with short duration of illness were found only after the S1-S2 paradigm, which might be an early sign of cognitive changes in PD. This is the first study to apply an S1-S2 paradigm for a visual P300 test in PD and proved the value of this paradigm for detecting minor cognitive abnormalities. ERP changes were correlated with clinical features. Reduced P300 amplitude for the S1-S2 paradigm was significantly correlated with WAIS-R scores and gait disturbance. The correlation between P300 amplitude and clinical scores has rarely been discussed before. P300 latency during the oddball paradigm in PD was influenced by age at test, age at onset, and duration of illness. This may explain why P300 results in nondemented PD have varied among previous authors.  相似文献

The effect of motivational instructions on P300 amplitude.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The aim of this investigation was to determine the effect on P300 amplitude of instructions aimed at increasing the subject's degree of task involvement. To this end, two different studies were carried out. In Study 1, 20 university students were tested with an auditory event-related potential (ERP) oddball paradigm (target: 1,100 Hz; standard: 1,000 Hz) in two consecutive runs, each with a different set of instructions; after the first run, subjects were verbally motivated to increase their level of performance in the second run. In Study 2 (performed 1 year later), ERPs were similarly obtained from the same subjects during two oddball runs, but this time both tests were preceded by neutral instructions. The amplitude and latency of N1 and P2 elicited by non-targets and of N2 and P3 in target waveforms were evaluated. The findings showed that following motivating instructions, P3 amplitude increased while P3 latency showed a non-significant decrease. The amplitude of P2 to non-target stimuli--which could be interpreted as P250--was also affected by the instructions provided. The overall results suggest that the presentation of motivating instructions is followed by a higher amount of attentional resources allocated to all stimuli, and a more efficient evaluation and discrimination of relevant targets. The implication of these findings for the clinical use of P300 has been discussed.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Visual event related potentials (ERPs) were studied during an oddball paradigm, to testify whether cognitive slowing in Parkinson's disease exists and to investigate whether cognitive information processing can be influenced by different interstimulus intervals (ISIs) of an oddball task in patients with Parkinson's disease and normal subjects. METHODS: ERPs and reaction time were measured in 38 non-demented patients with Parkinson's disease and 24 healthy elderly subjects. A visual oddball paradigm was employed to evoke ERPs, at three different interstimulus (ISI) intervals: ISI(S), 1600 ms; ISI(M), 3100 ms; and ISI(L), 5100 ms. The effect of ISIs on ERPs and reaction time was investigated. RESULTS: Compared with the normal subjects, P300 latency at Cz and Pz was significantly delayed after rare target stimuli in patients with Parkinson's disease only at ISI(L). Reaction time was prolonged in patients at all the three ISIs, compared with the normal controls. There was also significantly delayed N200 and reduced P300 amplitude at Cz and/or Pz to rare non-target stimuli in patients at the three ISIs, compared with the normal controls. During rare target visual stimulation, P300 latency and reaction time in the patients with Parkinson's disease and reaction time in the normal subjects were gradually prolonged as the ISI increased. CONCLUSION: Prolonged N200 latency to rare non-target stimuli might indicate that automatic cognitive processing was slowed in Parkinson's disease. Cognitive processing reflected by P300 latency to rare target stimuli was influenced by longer ISI in patients with Parkinson's disease.  相似文献

Event-related potentials to emotional and neutral stimuli in alcoholism   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Several studies have demonstrated that the emotional value of stimuli affects P300 amplitude. In the present study, the influence of alcohol-related stimuli in alcoholic patients was investigated. Subjects were 10 alcoholic inpatients (3 female) and 10 age- and sex-matched controls. Eight alcohol-related and 8 neutral words served as stimuli in a visual oddball paradigm. Acohol-related words were targets (48 stimuli, 33%) and neutral words were standard stimuli (96 stimuli, 66%). Results showed that P300 amplitude for targets did not differ significantly between the two groups. However, P300 latency for targets as well as reaction time were significantly shorter in male alcoholic patients. In contrast, P300 latency was increased in female alcoholic patients but reaction time did not differ. These results suggest that male alcoholics process information linked to alcohol cues more rapidly than neutral cues, probably because a specific semantic network is activated in these patients. The decreased reaction time confirms the impulsive behavior frequently found in male alcoholism, as it has been described in type II alcoholism. Besides, the results imply that information processing was delayed in female alcoholic patients. Therefore this study demonstrates a gender-dependent impact of alcohol-related stimuli on information processing.  相似文献
