BackgroundIncreased serum concentrations of pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) have been linked to the metabolic syndrome in the general population. However, the relationship between serum PEDF and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome, remains unknown.MethodsWe assayed serum PEDF levels in 156 patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD and 103 nonsteatotic control subjects who were matched for age and sex. The association between levels of PEDF and clinical, biochemical, and histological phenotypes was examined.ResultsNAFLD patients had significantly higher serum PEDF levels (1.97 ± 0.50 μg/mL) than control subjects (1.51 ± 0.49 μg/mL, Student's t test, P < 0.001). Multivariable-adjusted stepwise regression analysis showed that PEDF ([beta] = 0.32, t = 3.13, P = 0.002) and triglycerides ([beta] = 0.22, t = 2.23, P = 0.02) were, in the order they entered into the model, the main independent predictors of steatosis scores in our patients with NAFLD.ConclusionsSerum PEDF levels are significantly increased in patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD and are associated with liver steatosis independently of traditional risk factors.  相似文献

ObjectivesPrior to large studies in breast cancer patients, we have sought to establish the normal range of a potential serum biomarker, Amphiregulin, in healthy women and to determine whether sampling during the menstrual cycle influences the detected Amphiregulin levels.Design and methodsSerum Amphiregulin levels were quantified using a commercially available ELISA in 85 normal female donors.ResultsThe range of circulating Amphiregulin was 0–4467 pg/mL. The majority of women had no detectable circulating Amphiregulin (n = 54), and only five women had levels exceeding 500 pg/mL. Serum Amphiregulin levels did not vary significantly during the menstrual cycle (n = 7 women).ConclusionsDetection of circulating Amphiregulin in a significant minority of healthy women suggests that it may not have the specificity necessary for a population screening tool; however its potential utility for monitoring response to treatment or disease progression should be examined in breast cancer cases.  相似文献

ObjectivesThe aims of this study were to measure serum levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and to investigate the association of these BDNF levels with biomarkers of glucose metabolism and insulin resistance.Design and methodsWe studied 112 patients with T2DM and 80 age- and gender-matched control subjects.ResultsSerum BDNF levels were significantly lower in patients with T2DM compared to control subjects (15.5 ± 5.2 ng/mL vs. 20.0 ± 7.3 ng/mL, P < 0.01). In patients with T2DM, BDNF levels were significantly higher in females than in males (P < 0.01). In the female patients, BDNF was positively related to immunoreactive insulin (IRI) (ρ = 0.458, P < 0.05) and HOMA-R (ρ = 0.444, P < 0.05). Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed a significant relationship between BDNF and IRI (F = 5.294, P < 0.05) in female patients with diabetes.ConclusionsThese findings suggest that BDNF may contribute to glucose metabolism.  相似文献

ContextSelf-compassion entails qualities such as kindness and understanding toward oneself in difficult circumstances and may influence adjustment to persistent pain. Self-compassion may be a particularly influential factor in pain adjustment for obese individuals who suffer from persistent pain, as they often experience heightened levels of pain and lower levels of psychological functioning.ObjectivesThe purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship of self-compassion to pain, psychological functioning, pain coping, and disability among patients who have persistent musculoskeletal pain and who are obese.MethodsEighty-eight obese patients with persistent pain completed a paper-and-pencil self-report assessment measure before or after their appointment with their anesthesiologist.ResultsHierarchical linear regression analyses demonstrated that even after controlling for important demographic variables, self-compassion was a significant predictor of negative affect (β = ?0.48, P < 0.001), positive affect (β = 0.29, P = 0.01), pain catastrophizing (β = ?0.32, P = 0.003), and pain disability (β = ?0.24, P < 0.05).ConclusionThe results of this study indicate that self-compassion may be important in explaining the variability in pain adjustment among patients who have persistent musculoskeletal pain and are obese.  相似文献

ObjectivesTo evaluate the potential clinical significance of serum autotaxin (ATX) level in patients with cancers of the digestive system.Design and methodsSerum ATX activity was measured as the lysophospholipase D activity in patients with cancer of the esophagus (n = 8), stomach (n = 18), colorectum (n = 21), biliary tract (n = 19), or pancreas (n = 103) and in patients with benign pancreatic diseases (n = 73).ResultsAmong patients with various cancers of digestive system, increased serum ATX activity was predominantly observed among pancreatic cancer patients. Serum ATX activity was not increased in patients with chronic pancreatitis or pancreatic cysts. In the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, the area under the receiver operating curve for serum ATX activity was 0.541 (95% CI, 0.435–0.648) for men and 0.772 (95% CI, 0.659–0.885) for women. No significant correlation was observed between serum ATX activity and CEA, CA19-9 or Dupan2 levels.ConclusionSerum ATX activity may be useful for identifying pancreatic cancer when used together with other serum markers of pancreatic cancer.  相似文献

BackgroundSerum retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) and small dense low-density lipoprotein (sdLDL) have been suggested to be associated with insulin resistance, but no information is available on the relationship between RBP4 and sdLDL.MethodsWe determined serum RBP4, sdLDL-cholesterol, and other metabolic variables on 38 young women, aged 19–29 years. The homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was used for the estimation of insulin resistance.ResultsIn simple regression analyses, RBP4 levels had significant correlations with total cholesterol (r = 0.354, P = 0.029), LDL-cholesterol (r = 0.396, P = 0.014), and sdLDL-cholesterol (r = 0.510, P = 0.001) levels. The sdLDL-cholesterol levels also correlated significantly with total cholesterol (r = 0.402, P = 0.012), LDL-cholesterol (r = 0.627, P < 0.001) and triglycerides (r = 0.449, P = 0.005). Stepwise multiple regression analyses showed only sdLDL-cholesterol (β coefficient (ß) = 0.510, P = 0.001) level was a significant independent predictor of RBP4 levels (adjusted R2 = 0.240), whereas RBP4 (ß = 0.289, P = 0.026) level was one of major factors affecting sdLDL-cholesterol levels (adjusted R2 = 0.519). There was no significant association of HOMA-IR with RBP4 or sdLDL levels.ConclusionsWe showed an independent linkage between serum RBP4 and sdLDL-cholesterol levels in young adult women. These findings may contribute to understanding of lipoprotein metabolisms involved in diabetes and cardiovascular disease.  相似文献

ObjectiveAtrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is a key regulator in the homeostasis of water excretion and has emerged as an important prognostic marker for symptomatic chronic heart failure (CHF). The stability of ANP represents a crucial factor in assessing its use as a cardiac biomarker. Accordingly, we assessed the stability of ANP in blood samples collected from healthy controls and CHF subjects for a 12 month period.MethodsBlood samples from 10 healthy controls and 12 symptomatic CHF subjects with left ventricular systolic dysfunction were drawn. Determination of plasma ANP was performed by a standardized radioimmunoassay protocol.ResultsThe ANP levels of healthy subjects were 68.5 ± 11.6 pg/mL at baseline and 69.9 ± 17.2 pg/mL at 12 months (p = 0.71). The ANP concentrations of CHF subjects were 199.25 ± 44.8 pg/mL at baseline and 197.83 ± 47.4 pg/mL at 12 months (p = 0.70) respectively.ConclusionANP is a stable molecule with no evidence of degradation when stored at ? 80 °C.  相似文献

ContextIt is well known that insomnia is highly prevalent in cancer patients. Although various studies have used the Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS) for insomnia assessment, it has never been applied to cancer patients with insomnia.ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to establish the reliability and validity of the Taiwanese AIS version (AIS-T) and evaluate the severity of insomnia among cancer patients in Taiwan.MethodsUsing a cross-sectional research design, 195 cancer patients (n = 195) were recruited from outpatient oncology clinics.ResultsCronbach’s alpha for internal consistency was 0.83, and the test-retest reliability was 0.94 over an interval of three days, based on a sample of 30 patients. Moreover, concurrent validity could be evaluated by significant correlations of the AIS-T with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index-Taiwan form (PSQI-T) (r = 0.82, P < 0.001) and sleep efficiency measured by Actiwatch parameters (r = ?0.54, P < 0.001). Construct validity could be established by the Brief Fatigue Inventory-Taiwan form (r = 0.56, P < 0.001) and Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36-Taiwanese version (physical component summary: r = ?0.52, P < 0.001; mental component summary: r = ?0.53, P < 0.001). The AIS-T could detect significant known-group validity from sleep quality (PSQI-T ≥5 or <5, respectively). The Actiwatch parameters are consistent with the results of the AIS-T, and both data sets indicate that patients experienced sleep disturbances. The prevalence of insomnia, as defined by the criteria of the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th ed., was 22.56%; 49.2% subjects had significant insomnia at the score ≥6 at AIS-T.ConclusionThis study concludes that the AIS-T is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing insomnia among cancer patients in Taiwan.  相似文献

ObjectivesAn increased level of serum vascular adhesion protein-1 (VAP-1) has been found in patients with diabetes mellitus and vascular disorders. This study examined whether serum VAP-1 levels are associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD).Design and methodsWe included 262 subjects aged 30 and above with fasting plasma glucose level < 7 mmol/L checked within 1 year. First morning urine specimens were collected. Microalbuminuria was defined if urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio ≥ 30 μg/mg creatinine. The glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was estimated. CKD stages were defined according to the suggestions of the National Kidney Foundation. Serum VAP-1 levels were analyzed by immunofluorometric assay.ResultsSerum VAP-1 levels were positively associated with the urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio ( r = 0.29, p < 0.0001) and negatively associated with estimated GFR (r = ?0.24, p =  0.0001). Subjects with CKD stage 2 (N =  51) and stage 3 (N =  91) had significantly higher levels of serum VAP-1 than those without CKD (p =  0.0003 and p =  0.035, adjusted for age and gender, respectively). A high serum VAP-1 level was associated with the presence of CKD (OR 1.63 for 1 SD increase of VAP-1, p =  0.018), adjusting for age, sex, and smoking. Ordered logit models revealed that high serum VAP-1 levels correlated with advanced stages of CKD.ConclusionsSerum levels of VAP-1 are associated with the severity of kidney damage or stages of kidney disease. The true mechanism which links the serum VAP-1 and CKD remains to be elucidated in further studies.  相似文献

BackgroundFollicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) may play an important role in bone mass regulation in postmenopausal women.MethodsA cross-sectional study of 699 healthy Chinese women, aged 20 to 82 y, was conducted. Serum FSH and LH and BMD were measured at the posteroanterior (PA) spine, lateral spine, total hip, and distal forearm.ResultsThe geometric mean values (± SD) of serum FSH and LH in premenopausal women were 3.94 ± 2.08 and 7.51 ± 2.58 IU/l, respectively, and in postmenopausal women were 28.8 ± 1.88 and 25.6 ± 1.95 IU/l, respectively. The correlation of FSH to BMD at different skeletal regions (r = ? 0.597  ? 0.492, P = 0.000) was higher than that of LH to BMD (r = ? 0.452  ? 0.332, P = 0.000). The prevalences of osteoporosis for the quartiles of FSH at various skeletal sites were 0.57%, 0.43%, 27.1%, and 30.9%, respectively; and of LH were 2.14%, 4.43%, 19.5%, and 26.0%, respectively. The prevalence of osteoporosis in 3rd and 4th quartile was more significantly increased than the 1st and 2nd quartile.ConclusionsThese data suggest that FSH and LH levels in circulation are associated with BMD changes and osteoporosis occurrence in Chinese women.  相似文献

ObjectiveInsulin resistance and type 2 diabetes are associated with an increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases. Decreased brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels might play a role in the pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric disorders. The aim of our study was to estimate serum BDNF concentration in nonobese women divided into subgroups according to their insulin sensitivity.Design and methodsWe studied 46 young, healthy, nonobese women. Insulin sensitivity was estimated with the euglycemic–hyperinsulinemic clamp technique. Then, participants were divided into subgroups of high (mean, 12.79 ± 2.01 mg/kg fat-free mass/min) and low insulin sensitivity (mean, 7.33 ± 1.66 mg/kg fat-free mass/min).ResultsWe observed decreased serum BDNF concentration in women with low insulin sensitivity in comparison to high insulin sensitivity group (3306.11 ± 603.10 vs 4141.91 ± 755.37 pg/mL, p = 0.001). Serum BDNF was positively related to insulin sensitivity (r = 0.43, p = 0.003). This correlation remained significant after adjustment for other estimated parameters.ConclusionsSerum BDNF is decreased in young nonobese women with low insulin sensitivity. Early detection and prevention of insulin resistance might be useful in the prevention of neurodegenerative disorders.  相似文献

BackgroundThe bioactive lipid lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) exerts multiple effects in the female reproductive system. Serum/plasma LPA is mainly produced by the lysophospholipase D activity of autotaxin (ATX). Previous studies have suggested that ATX has critical roles in cancer, reproduction, and vascular development. In the present study, we evaluated the usefulness of serum ATX measurements in pregnant women.MethodsWe measured the serum ATX antigen levels in 32 normal pregnant women, 15 patients with pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH), and 7 patients with preterm delivery using a recently developed automated enzyme immunoassay.ResultsThe serum ATX antigen levels in normal pregnant women were significantly higher than those in non-pregnant women (P < 0.001). The serum ATX antigen levels in normal pregnant women were significantly and positively correlated with the gestational week (r = 0.809, P < 0.001). During the third trimester, the serum ATX antigen levels of the patients with PIH (3.299 ± 1.720 mg/l) were significantly lower than those of the normal pregnant women (4.915 ± 2.323 mg/l) (P = 0.04).ConclusionsThe serum ATX antigen level increases with the progression of pregnancy. The serum ATX level may be a serological marker for the prediction of PIH.  相似文献

ContextPatients with advanced cancer often experience symptoms such as pain, anorexia, and fatigue. Opioid therapy for the management of cancer pain may result in neurohormonal dysfunction that may contribute to a patient’s symptom burden.ObjectivesTo examine the association between serum cortisol and testosterone levels, opioid therapy, and symptom distress in patients with cancer.MethodsA retrospective chart review was performed on 77 consecutive patients with advanced cancer referred for symptoms of fatigue or cachexia. We collected information regarding cortisol levels (am or random), testosterone levels (men only), morphine equivalent daily dose (MEDD), and symptom severity measured by the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale. Nonparametric correlation analysis was performed.ResultsThe median age was 63 years (range 24–79), and 62% were men (n = 48). Most patients had gastrointestinal (n = 33, 43%) or thoracic (n = 21, 27%) malignancies and were Caucasian (n = 46, 60%). The median random cortisol level was 19.1 μg/dL (Q1–Q3, 13.4–23.8 [normal, 4.3–22.4]), which correlated with MEDD (Spearman coefficient, 0.25, P = 0.032) and symptoms including pain (0.50, P < 0.001), fatigue (0.29, P = 0.012), nausea (0.34, P = 0.003), depression (0.24, P = 0.032), and anxiety (0.25, P = 0.031). Pain and nausea remained significant after Bonferroni correction. Median morning cortisol level (n = 28) was 20.6 μg/dL (Q1–Q3, 16.6–25.4) and significantly correlated with pain (0.55, P = 0.003) after Bonferroni correction. Patients with a MEDD <30 mg/day had a mean random cortisol level of 16.6 μg/dL, whereas patients with a MEDD ≥30 mg/day had a mean random cortisol level of 20.6 μg/dL (P = 0.01). In 44 male patients with cancer, MEDD was inversely correlated with the total testosterone level (?0.52, P = 0.001).ConclusionIn patients with advanced cancer, elevated random cortisol levels were associated with pain and opioid use, although abnormally low levels of cortisol were found to be infrequent. Patients on higher opioid therapy (MEDD >30) had increased cortisol levels, and male patients had lower testosterone levels. Our study suggests that opioid therapy in patients with advanced cancer may inhibit gonadal function while sparing the adrenal axis. Future studies are needed.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo investigate the relation between functional impairments of cancer patients and circulating cytokines using a multiplex technique.Design and methods50 patients with cancer were assessed using the quality of life (QOL) questionnaire. 27 plasma cytokine levels were determined by using the Bio-Plex array system. The relation to QOL scores was assessed using Chi-square test for categorical variables and univariate linear regression analysis for cytokine levels.ResultsMultivariate analysis showed that interleukin-6 (IL-6) level is a significant independent determinant of physical (β = ? 0.238, P = 0.0126) and cognitive functioning (β = ? 0.462, P = 0.0006) and that vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) level is a significant independent determinant of emotional functioning (β = ? 0.414, P = 0.039).ConclusionThis study, in which 27 cytokines are simultaneously tested with cutting edge technology, demonstrates that plasma IL-6 and VEGF are significant independent determinants of functional impairments in patients with cancer.  相似文献

ObjectivesSerum Fetuin A has been identified as an inhibitor of ectopic calcification. It is reduced in subjects with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and it has been proposed as a potential link between CKD and the higher prevalence of arterial calcification observed in these patients. During aging both the stiffening of arterial wall due to calcification and a decline in kidney function are frequent. The aim of the study is to investigate if Fetuin A serum levels are associated with aging and with AHSG T256S polymorphism. Moreover, we aim at investigate whether serum Fetuin A is correlated to kidney function in this setting of senescence.Design and methods256 health long-lived subjects (age 92 [81–100]) were recruited for the study. Serum Fetuin A was evaluated by ELISA, Cystatin C by immune-nephelometry. AHSG T256S was determinated by PCR-RFLP.ResultsSerum Fetuin A shows a significant correlation with age (r = 0.20; P = 0.0048). AHSG TS and SS genotypes are associated to lower levels of serum protein (0.27 [0.19–0.29] g/L vs 0.42 [0.32–0.49] g/L; P < 0.027 and 0.34 [0.25–0.41] g/L vs 0.42 [0.32–0.49] g/L; P < 0.001, respectively). No significant correlation between Fetuin A and Cystatin C was observed.ConclusionsSerum Fetuin A increases with age in elder individuals and subjects with the TS or SS AHSG polymorphism have lower levels of the circulating protein. No correlation with kidney function decline was observed. Other mechanisms should be investigated to explain the increase of Fetuin A with age.  相似文献

BackgroundPolypharmacy has been shown to influence outcomes in elderly patients. However, the impact of medication regimen complexity, quantified by the Medication Regimen Complexity Index (MRCI), on health outcomes after discharge of elderly patients has not been studied.ObjectiveOur aim was to test the convergent, discriminant, and predictive validity of the MRCI in older hospitalized patients with varying functional and cognitive levels.MethodsWe retrospectively applied the MRCI to the medication regimen of 212 hospitalized patients and assessed its validity.ResultsThe mean (SD) MRCI scores for medication regimens and number of medications at discharge were 30.27 (13.95) and 5.95 (2.40), respectively. The MRCI scores were strongly correlated with the number of medications (r = 0.94, P < 0.001) and the number of daily doses (r = 0.87, P < 0.001) and increased as the number of medications taken ≥3 times daily increased (27.35, 34.45, and 43.00 for none, 1, and 2 drugs, respectively; P < 0.001). Positive correlations were observed between the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale–Geriatrics score and both the number of medications and the MRCI score (r = 0.40, r = 0.46, P < 0.001, respectively). No relationship was found between MRCI scores and the number of medications and age, sex, and postdischarge medication modifications. Patients nonadherent to at least 1 drug were discharged with a higher MRCI score and higher number of medications compared with medication-compliant patients (33.3 and 7.0 vs 27 and 5.8, respectively; P < 0.01). An inverse correlation was found between overall adherence 1 month after discharge and the MRCI score (r = ?0.188, P = 0.028); however, no such correlation was found regarding the number of medications at discharge.ConclusionsThe MRCI showed satisfactory validity and good evidence of classifying regimen complexity over a simple medication count. The MRCI demonstrated application in clinical research and practice in the elderly. However, more studies are needed to investigate its advantage over the number of medications for identifying patients with complex medication regimens and directing interventions to simplify their medication regimen complexity.  相似文献

ObjectivesTo investigate the role of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) in patients with urinary tract infection (UTI) and renal stone in relation to Tamm–Horsfall protein (THP) and osteopontin (OPN).Design and methodsELISA kits were used to determine these markers in serum and urinary samples of 20 patients with UTI, 15 with renal stone and 10 controls.ResultsBMP-2 significantly increased in serum of patients who had UTI (P = 0.05) and renal stone (P = 0.01). In the case of UTI, serum BMP-2 at cutoff 44 pg/mL had sensitivity and specificity (92%, 80%), while cystatin C at cutoff 525 ng/mL showed sensitivity and specificity (85%, 91%). THP is a good predictor of renal diseases (P < 0.001) by regression analysis. It is also the most sensitive urinary marker for UTI with sensitivity and specificity (94%, 75%) at cutoff 305 ng/mL.ConclusionCombination of serum BMP-2 and cystatin C are more sensitive and accurate for early diagnosis of renal infection and damage.  相似文献

BackgroundHyperadiponectinemia or hypoadiponectinemia is associated with different diseases. There is a paucity of data on circulating plasma adiponectin concentrations in human intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). We investigated the plasma adiponectin concentrations in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage, and analyzed the correlation of adiponectin with the severity of brain injury and early mortality after ICH.MethodsThirty controls and 86 patients with acute ICH were included. Plasma samples were obtained on admission and at days 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 after ICH. Their concentrations were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.ResultsAfter ICH, plasma adiponectin level of the patients increased immediately within 6 h, peaked within 24 h, plateaued at day 2, and decreased gradually thereafter. It was substantially higher than that in the controls in a period of 7 days. A multivariate analysis showed plasma adiponectin level was an independent predictor for 1-week mortality (odds ratio, 1.199; 95% CI: 1.035–1.389; P = 0.015) and that it was associated with Glasgow coma scale (GCS) score (t = ? 3.596, P = 0.001) and plasma C-reactive protein level (t = 4.194, P < 0.001). A receiver operating characteristic curve identified that a plasma adiponectin level > 16.4 μg/ml predicted the 1-week mortality of patients with a sensitivity of 65.6% and a specificity of 90.7% (AUC, 0.789; 95% CI: 0.688–0.870). The predictive value of adiponectin concentration was significantly lower than that of GCS score (P = 0.007) and hematoma volume (P = 0.022). Adiponectin could not improve the predictive values of GCS score (P = 0.317) and hematoma volume (P = 0.226).ConclusionsAdiponectin is an independent indicator of early death and may play an anti-inflammatory role after intracerebral hemorrhage.  相似文献

ObjectivesTo investigate retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4), small dense low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (sdLDL-C) and oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) levels and their associations in dyslipidemia subjects.Design and methodsWe determined RBP4, sdLDL-C, ox-LDL levels in 150 various dyslipidemia subjects and 50 controls. The correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were performed.ResultsThe RBP4, sdLDL-C and ox-LDL levels were found increased in various dyslipidemia subjects. The sdLDL-C levels were positively correlated with RBP4 (r = 0.273, P = 0.001) and ox-LDL (r = 0.273, P = 0.001). RBP4 levels were also correlated with ox-LDL (r = 0.167, P = 0.043). The multiple regression analysis showed that only sdLDL-C was a significant independent predictor for RBP4 (β coefficient = 0.219, P = 0.009; adjusted R2 = 0.041) and ox-LDL (β coefficient = 0.253, P = 0.003; adjusted R2 = 0.057) levels, respectively.ConclusionsThe independent associations of sdLDL-C with RBP4 and ox-LDL were observed in dyslipidemia subjects. RBP4 may play an important role in lipid metabolism of atherosclerosis, particularly in formation of sdLDL.  相似文献

BackgroundOxidative stress plays an important role in multiple sclerosis (MS).Objective and methodsThe present study was designed to evaluate the modifications of plasma proteins by estimation markers of oxidative/nitrosative stress: carbonyl groups and 3-nitrotyrosines (3-NT) levels in relapsing-remitting (RR) (n = 10) and secondary progressive (SP) (n = 10) clinical course of multiple sclerosis. Moreover, we estimated the level of uric acid (UA) in plasma of MS patients.ResultsCompared to controls (n = 10), the levels of carbonyl groups in plasma proteins were elevated (P < 0.0001) as well in RRMS as in SPMS. The highest concentration of 3-NT was observed in plasma proteins obtained from SPMS patients (P < 0.0005). The level of uric acid in plasma was significantly lower in RRMS (P < 0.0001) than SPMS.ConclusionThis is the first report which presented differences between SPMS and RRMS patients in 3-NT and protein carbonyl groups in plasma proteins.  相似文献
