Urinary retention due to idiopathic megacolon

A 58-year-old man with neurogenic bladder dysfunction was hospitalized with chief complaints of urinary retention and abdominal distention. He had been treated for neurogenic bladder due to cerebral infarction for 3 years. The pelvic CT scan and excretory urogram revealed an obstruction of the neck of the bladder due to an abundant stool, which was found to have resulted from adult idiopathic megacolon. A permanent colostomy with sigmoid resection was established. The postoperative urodynamic examination demonstrated improvement of micturition.     

Urinary retention due to herpes virus infections

Urinary retention is uncommon in patients with herpes zoster and anogenital herpes simplex. Seven patients (four men, three women) with a mean age of 68.1 years (range, 35–84) with urinary retention due to herpes zoster (n = 6) or anogenital herpes simplex (n = 1) were studied. Six patients had unilateral skin eruption in the saddle area (S2–4 dermatome) and one patient with herpes zoster had a skin lesion in the L4–5 dermatome. All patients had detrusor areflexia without bladder sensation, and two of them had inactive external sphincter on electromyography at presentation. Clean intermittent catheterization was performed, and voiding function was recovered in 4–6 weeks (average, 5.4) in all patients. Urodynamic study was repeated after recovery of micturition in three patients, and they returned to normal on cystometrography and external sphincter electromyography. Acute urinary retention associated with anogenital herpes infection has been thought to occur when the meninges or sacral spinal ganglia were involved, and, in conclusion, this condition may be considered to be reversible. Urinary retention due to sacral myeloradiculitis: a clinical and neurophysiological study

We report 5 cases of sacral myeloradiculitis presenting with transient urinary retention. Neurophysiological testing, including bulbocavernosus reflex, pudendal evoked response and external anal sphincter electromyography, was performed. Parasympathetic pelvic nerves, pudendal nerves as well as the spinal cord seem to be involved to various degrees in this infrequent disorder.     

Ureteral obstruction due to fecal impaction in patient with colonic loop urinary diversion

An interesting case report of ureteral obstruction due to fecal impaction in a meningomyelocele patient with colon loop diversion is presented. This case is an important reminder that neurologic deficits in patients with meningomyelocele are not limited to the genitourinary system. Conservative management of our patient's colonic hypotonicity obviated surgical intervention and has been successful in preventing recurrence of ureteral obstruction.     

Urinary retention due to catheter occlusion by worms

Herein we report a very rare case involving acute occlusion of a Foley catheter by worms. The treatment consisted of removal of the occluded catheter followed by bladder washing with a Betadine solution mixed with normal saline and introduction of a new catheter.

Acute urine retention in a child due to fibromatosis of the prostate

The authors describe an 11-month-old boy with acute urine retention due to fibromatosis. Cystoscopic examination revealed no abnormalities in the bladder but intraurethrally there was an impression of the lobi prostate. Repeated transurethral and transperineal biopsies showed proliferation of randomly arranged spindle cells in a loose collagenous matrix. Mitotic figures were scarce. Fibrous proliferations of the prostate and bladder are rare. The fibromatoses constitute a group of nonmetastasizing fibrous growths which tend to invade surrounding tissues. They show a wide range in histological appearance and biological behavior, varying from spontaneous regression to aggressive and destructive local growth. As in our case the histopathological diagnosis was fibromatosis without any further specification, it was impossible to predict the behavior of the process. For this reason, a wait-and-see policy was adopted: after a very short period of time, the tumor regressed spontaneously.     

Uremia as a complication to urinary retention due to hypothyreosis. Case report

Uremia caused by urinary retention necessitated acute hemodialysis in a middle-aged woman. The primary etiology was most probably hypothyreosis. Normal micturition was reestablished after thyroid substitution.     

Tracheal obstruction due to congenital tracheomalacia in a child. Case report.

Congenital tracheal obstruction, though not notably uncommon in infancy, is rarely due to isolated tracheomalacia, especially when characterized by complete absence of cartilaginous rings. A 5-year-old boy underwent successful tracheal resection and anastomosis following severe tracheal obstruction due to aplasia of cartilaginous rings.
