The aims of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of upper body quadrant pain among Israeli professional urban bus drivers and to evaluate the association between individual, ergonomic, and psychosocial risk factors and occurrence of neck pain. Three hundred and eighty-four male urban bus drivers were consecutively enrolled in the study. Data pertaining to work-related ergonomic and psychosocial stress factors were collected. The 12-month prevalence of neck pain was 21.2%, followed by shoulder: 14.7%, upper back: 8.3%, elbow: 3.0%, and wrist: 3.0% pain. Prevalence of neck pain was associated with uncomfortable seats (odds ratio; OR [95% confidence interval; CI]: 2.2 [1.2-4.3], back support (2.3 [1.2-4.2]), and steering wheel (2.2 [1.1-4.5]). Drivers with neck pain reported significantly higher prevalence of pain in the upper back (OR [95% CI]: 5.9 [2.7-12.9]), shoulders (8.1 [4.3-15.3]), and wrists (7.0 [2.0-21.8]) compared to drivers without neck pain. Work-related organizational stress factors were not associated with neck pain prevalence.  相似文献

A cross-sectional study of selected jobs in an aluminum smelter was conducted to assess the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMDs), and to estimate their association with physical and psychosocial characteristics of the jobs. A structured interview and physical exam were used to assess the musculoskeletal health status of the participants, and a self-administered questionnaire was used to assess the psychosocial factors. Observational job analysis was conducted to evaluate 37 potential physical risk factors. Complete data were available for 104 subjects. The prevalence of WMDs on interview and physical exam were 0.8%, 14.9%, 11.6%, 14.9%, and 17.4% for the neck, shoulder, elbow/forearm, hand/wrist, and low back regions, respectively. Unconditional multiple logistic regression was used to model the relationship between physical and psychosocial factors and health status. Years of forearm twisting were found to be a significant predictor for hand/wrist disorders on interview (OR = 17, 95% CI = 2.9–106); for elbow/foream disorders on physical exam and interview (OR = 37, 95% CI = 3.0–470); and for shoulder disorders on interview (OR = 92, 95% CI = 7.3–∞) and on interview and physical exam (OR = 46, 95% CI = 3.8–550). Low decision latitude was also found to be significant for the shoulder on interview (OR = 4.5, 95% CI = 1.3–16). High job satisfaction (OR = 5.9, 95% CI = 1.4–25) and low social support (OR = 5.3, 95% CI = 1.3–22) were associated with low back pain report on interview; only high job satisfaction (OR = 5.3, 95% CI = 1.1–26) was associated with low back pain on both interview and physical exam. INTRODUCTION: Massage practitioners are at high risk for work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). We investigated the prevalence and risk factors. METHODS: We randomly selected 161 visually impaired practitioners. Demographics, musculoskeletal symptoms, and working postures were analyzed with multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: Results indicated that about 71.4% had at least one WMSD in 12 months. Prevalence rates were finger or thumb, 50.3%; shoulder, 31.7%; wrist, 28.6%; neck, 25.5%; arm or elbow, 23.6%; forearm, 20.5%; and back, 19.3%. Working duration >20 years had an adjusted odds ratio (OR) for finger or thumb 4.0-4.5 with 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.5-13.8, client contact >4 h/day (adjusted OR for finger = 3.2, 95% CI=1.3-8.1), and < or =7-kg pulp-pinch strength (adjusted OR for upper extremity = 2.9-3.2, 95% CI=1.2-8.3). Adjusted ORs for lower-back symptoms were 3.1 (95% CI=1.3-7.8) and 3.6 (95% CI=1.4-9.6), respectively, for lack of neutral neck posture and for inappropriate working-table height. OBJECTIVES—To determine the influence of short term exposure to mechanical factors on regional musculoskeletal pain.
METHODS—Full time newly employed workers were recruited from 12 occupational groups and information collected by questionnaire. Subjects indicated on a blank body manikin any low back, shoulder, wrist or forearm or both, or knee pain which had occurred during the past month and had lasted more than 1 day. Data were also collected with a previously validated questionnaire on working postures, manual handling activities, and repetitive movements of the upper limb. The relations between mechanical factors and each area of pain were calculated as odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). Adjustment was made for age and sex.
RESULTS—1081 subjects (median age 23; interquartile range 20-27) were recruited to the study (a participation rate of 91%). 261 (24%) reported low back pain, 221 (20%) shoulder pain, 93 (9%) wrist or forearm pain, and 222 (21%) knee pain. Several specific manual handling activities were found to be associated with low back, shoulder, and knee pain. Carrying weights of more than 50 lbs (23 kg) on one shoulder was the factor which was most strongly associated with low back pain (OR 2.4 (95% CI 1.5 to 3.8)), shoulder pain (OR 3.1 (95% CI 1.9 to 4.8)), and knee pain (OR 3.5 (95% CI 2.2 to 5.5)), whereas forearm pain was most strongly associated with repetitive movements of the wrists (OR 1.8 (95% CI 1.04 to 3.1)). By contrast very few postures were associated with regional pain, although bending forwards in an uncomfortable position for at least 15 minutes was associated with shoulder pain (OR 1.6 (95% CI 1.2 to 2.2)) and kneeling for at least 15 minutes was associated with knee pain (OR 1.8 (95% CI 1.2 to 2.6)). Exposure to mechanical factors was most strongly associated with pain at multiple sites rather than with pains in individual regions.
CONCLUSIONS—Even among workers with only short term exposure to mechanical factors, musculoskeletal pain is increased.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to analyze the associations between work-time organization, psychosocial factors at work, and musculoskeletal pain of the neck, shoulders, and wrists and hands among administrative employees. METHODS: We analyzed the pain felt in a population of 762 employees during the 7 days before the survey at any of the three sites studied (multiple logistic regression). RESULTS: We found no associations between work-time organization and neck or shoulder pain. Wrist and hand pain increased with irregular schedule (odds ratio "OR" = 2.01; 95% confidence interval "95% CI" = 1.19-3.41) and lack of advance (at least 8 days) notice of schedule (OR = 1.90; 95% CI = 1.03-3.50). Of the psychosocial factors, only high psychological demand was associated with a significant increase in the prevalence of pain, in the neck and the shoulders (respectively: OR = 1.86, 95% CI = 1.23-2.82; OR = 1.88, 95% CI = 1.17-3.03). CONCLUSION: Prevention by improved psychosocial constraints at work must continue.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The process of referral between the first and the second level of the health system in the Democratic Republic of Congo is poorly understood. This report intends to study the association between the referral and the hospital perinatal outcomes. METHODS: Delivery outcomes in a retrospective cohort of 1162 women admitted between June 95 and May 96, in two referral hospitals in Kivu were analyzed according to the referral status and the women's characteristics. RESULTS: Forty-three percent (n=492)of women admitted, corresponding to 2.3% of expected pregnant women, were referred. Referred women had higher risks of obstetrical complications (OR=2.0; CI95%: 1.3-3.1) and intervention (OR=1.5; CI95%: 1.0-2.3) and similar risks of low birth weight and perinatal mortality. Women with complications during the antenatal period had a double risk of intervention and perinatal mortality. The risk of obstetrical intervention was lower when women had attended 2 visits (OR=0.5; CI95%: 0.3-0.8); the risk of low birth weight was lowest only for mothers who had attended one visit (OR=0.5; CI95%: 0.3-0.9). Distance > or =90 minutes walking from home to hospital raised the risk of obstetrical complication (OR=1.7; CI95%: 1.1-2.5), the risk of obstetrical intervention (OR=1.5; CI95%: 1.0-2.1), and the risk of perinatal mortality (OR=1.6; CI95%: 1.0-2.7). Late admission raised the risk of perinatal mortality (OR=1.8; CI95%: 1.2-2.9) and lowered the risk of obstetrical complication (OR=0.7; CI95%: 0.5-1.0). Part payment of care was associated with higher risks of low birth weight (OR=1.9; CI95%: 1.3-2.9), perinatal mortality (OR=2.2; CI95%: 1.4-3.5) and obstetrical intervention (OR=2.4; CI95%: 1.7-3.4). CONCLUSION: These results suggest a deficit of referred cases considering that 15% of pregnant women in the area covered by the referral hospitals should have been referred. They confirm the negative influence of economic and geographic constraints on the delivery outcomes. They point out the relevance of making reorganization of the referral system a priority.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: In Dutch agriculture, musculoskeletal disorders are a main cause of sick leave. Among self-employed insured farmers, neck, shoulder, upper extremity, and back disorders accounted for 30% of the claims for sick leave of less than 1 year This case-control study set out to identify and quantify risk factors for sick leave due to musculoskeletal disorders among self-employed Dutch farmers. METHODS: Sick leave, claimed at an insurance company from 1998 to 2001 for back (SL-BP, n = 198) or neck/shoulder/upper extremity trouble (SL-EXT, n = 89) was analyzed; the controls did not file any claim in this period (n = 816). RESULTS: Multivariate analysis showed that risk factors for SL-BP were increased age (OR = 1.06 per year, CI = 1.04-1.09), body mass index (BMI) >27 (OR = 1.93, CI = 1.2-3.2), smoking (OR = 1.90, CI = 1.2-2.9), former pain (OR = 3.28, CI = 2.1-5.1), tractor driving >1,000 hr/year (OR = 2.44, CI = 1.0-6.4), and "high work pace and workload" (OR = 1.59, CI = 1.0-2.4). SL-EXT was associated with pig (OR = 3.63, CI = 1.4-9.7), mushroom (OR = 6.14, CI = 1.4-27.2), or dairy/pig farming (OR = 4.56, 1.1-19.5), while age (OR = 1.10, CI = 1.06-1.14), smoking (OR = 1.79, CI = 1.0-3.2), and former pain (OR = 3.37, CI = 1.9-6.1) were also contributing. CONCLUSIONS: Prevention of sick leave of self-employed farmers should focus on life style (obesity, smoking), reducing older farmers' exposure to physical load, exposure to long-term tractor driving. Specific attention should be paid to animal and mushroom farmers.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The genital complaint of abnormal vaginal discharge is common in South Asia. We describe the risk factors for the incidence of the complaint in women of reproductive age. Method Population-based cohort study in Goa, India. Out of 3000 randomly selected women, 2494 women participated. The outcome was an incident case of the complaint of abnormal vaginal discharge at 6 months (T1) and 12 months (T2) review. RESULTS: In total 71 (3.6%, 95% CI 2.8-4.5%) of the 2000 eligible women reviewed at T1 reported the complaint; and 80 (4.0%, CI 3.2-5.0%) of the 1999 women who did not complain of abnormal vaginal discharge at T1 reported it at T2. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified the following factors as associated with the complaint: younger age (OR 0.26, CI 0.1-0.5 for women aged 40-49 years compared with women aged 18-24 years); illiteracy (OR 1.48, CI 0.9-2.4); religion (Muslim women OR 3.15, CI 1.7-6.0 compared with Hindu women); women's concerns regarding their spouse's extramarital relationships (OR 3.46, CI 1.2-10.0); current BV infection (OR 1.87, CI 1.2-2.9); somatoform complaints (OR 3.30, CI 1.7-6.5 for the highest somatoform score quartile compared with the lowest); and depression and anxiety (OR 1.55, CI 0.9-2.6 for the highest mental health score quartile compared with the lowest). CONCLUSIONS: Reproductive and sexual health programmes must strengthen the capacity of practitioners to assess and treat bacterial vaginosis and psychosocial problems in women with complaints of abnormal vaginal discharge.  相似文献

More than 50% of infants with Down syndrome have associated defects that cause considerable morbidity and mortality. We evaluated the hypothesis that the trisomic genome interacts with environmental factors to increase the risk for specific associated defects. We evaluated risk factors present during early pregnancy in a multiracial population of 687 infants with Down syndrome. Mother's cigarette smoking was associated with the grouped cardiac defects [odds ratio (OR)=2.0; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.2-3.2]. When adjusted for other cardiac defects and maternal race, the following specific defects were associated with smoking: atrioventricular canal (OR = 2.3; 95% CI = 1.2-4.5), tetralogy of Fallot (OR = 4.6; 95% CI = 1.2-17.0), and atrial septal defects without ventricular septal defect (OR = 2.2; 95% CI = 1.1-4.3). Hirschsprung disease was associated with mother's daily consumption of more than three cups of coffee (OR = 6.02; 95% CI = 1.2-29.7) and with mother's fever (OR = 3.4; 95% CI = 0.7-16.4), but the number of cases was small. Use of alcohol was not associated with any defect. Mother's race, age, parity, income, or education did not confound the associations. Results suggest that environmental factors can modify the occurrence of associated anomalies in the embryo with Down syndrome.  相似文献

Occupational low back pain (LBP) is a major cause of morbidity and cost. Efforts to control LBP are largely unsuccessful, and better understanding of risks is needed, especially psychological factors. The purpose of this research was to assess the association between worker attributions and LBP. Attributing LBP to internal causes may increase the worker's perceived control, whereas external attribution may cause distress. A new model was developed to explore these associations. A cross-sectional design was used in this study of 278 garment workers. Data were gathered by a self-administered questionnaire and through direct observation. Responses to questions on worker attributions of LBP cause and knowledge of back safety were subjected to factor analysis and other psychometric evaluation to develop scales. Six hypotheses were tested using multivariate logistic regression. Workers who scored high in internal attribution were more likely to be knowledgeable of back safety (OR = 3.7, 95% CI = 2.0-6.7). Workers reporting high demand were more likely to report LBP (OR = 2.3, 95% CI = 1.2-4.4). Workers attributing LBP to job tasks were more likely to report LBP (OR = 3.2, 95% CI = 1.5-6.9), and those reporting high supervisor support were less likely to report LBP (OR = 0.23, 95% CI = 0.08-0.66). Workers with annual incomes above 15,000 dollars were more likely to report LBP in the test of both the Demand-Control-Support and Attribution models (OR = 2.8, 95% CI = 1.2-6.9 and OR = 4.1, 95% CI = 1.5-11.1, respectively). While both models appeared to be useful for the study of low back pain, the R(2)(L) of the Demand-Control-Support model equaled only 11.9 percent, whereas the Attribution model equaled 26.2 percent. This study provides evidence that attribution theory is useful in the study of LBP, including in future interventions in the prevention of LBP.  相似文献

Objective: To describe the factors asssociated with smoking and intention to smoke among a representative sample of first-grade pupils of secondary education (12-13 years old) in Barcelona.Subjects and methods: 37 secondary schools were randomly selected to evaluate the impact of a European-wide smoking prevention program (European Smoking prevention Frame Approach, ESFA project). In these schools, 1041 pupils of first grade of secondary education responded to a questionnaire designed at the University of Maastricht to study life-style attitudes and behaviours, mainly smoking.Results: 9.8% of boys and 12.6% of girls declared to smoke either regulary or ocasionally. Among the no-smokers, 61.4% of the boys and 73.3% of the girls reported to have the intention to smoke in the future. Among the boys, factors associated with smoking included social norms (odds ratio [OR] = 2.5; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.2-5.2), smoking by siblings (OR = 2.4; 95% CI, 1.1-5.2), attitudes against smoking (OR = 0.3; 95% CI, 0.1-0.6), practicing some sports in the leisure time (OR = 0.3; 95% CI, 0.1-0.7) and having more available pocket money (OR = 3.2; 95% CI, 1.5-6.8). Intention to smoke was only related to attitudes (OR = 0.3; 95% CI, 0.2-0.5). Among girls, smoking was associated to perceived pressure to smoke (OR = 2.5; 95% CI, 1.2-5.0), consumption by friends (OR = 6.0; 95% CI, 2.4-15.4) and attitudes against smoking (OR = 0.2; 95% CI, 0.1-0.4), while intention was only associated to attitudes (OR = 0.4; 95% CI, 0.2-0.6) and hanging out in the street in the leisure time (OR = 2.2; 95% CI, 0.3-3.5).Conclusions: The results stress the need to deal simultaneoulsy with the different factors associated to smoking initiation and attitude shaping, including cognitive factors, environmental factors, and patterns of leisure time utilization.  相似文献

Fractures of the proximal humerus, forearm, and wrist account for approximately one third of total osteoporotic fractures in the elderly. Several risk factors for these fractures were evaluated in this prospective study of 739 men and 1,105 women aged > or =60 years in Dubbo, Australia. During follow-up (1989-1996), the respective incidences of humerus and of forearm and wrist fractures, per 10,000 person-years, were 22.6 and 33.8 for men and 54.8 and 124.6 for women. Independent predictors of humerus fracture were femoral neck bone mineral density (FNBMD) (relative risk (RR) = 2.3, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.2, 4.5) in men and FNBMD (RR = 2.4, 95% CI: 1.7, 3.5) and height loss (RR = 1.1, 95% CI: 1.0, 1.2) in women. For forearm and wrist fractures, risk factors were FNBMD (men: RR = 1.5, 95% CI: 1.0, 2.3; women: RR = 1.5, 95% CI: 1.2, 1.9) and height loss (men: RR = 1.2, 95% CI: 1.0, 1.3; women: RR = 1.1, 95% CI: 1.0, 1.2). In addition, dietary calcium (men: RR = 2.0, 95% CI: 1.0, 3.6) and a history of falls (women: RR = 1.9, 95% CI: 1.4, 2.6) were also significant. These data suggest that elderly men and women largely share common risk factors for upper limb fractures and that FNBMD is the primary risk factor.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the differences and similarities in the incidence and recurrence of shoulder and neck complaints with respect to work-related physical, psychosocial, and personal risk factors. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was carried out among 769 workers of nursing homes and homes for the elderly. At baseline, a questionnaire was used to collect data on personal characteristics, physical workload, psychosocial workload, and the presence of shoulder and neck complaints. After 1 and 2 years, follow-up data were collected on shoulder and neck complaints. Generalized estimation equations were used for analyzing risk factors for the participants with at least one follow-up measurement available (N=556, 72%). RESULTS: In the multivariate model, adjusted for age and gender, obesity [odds ratio (OR) 2.12, 95% confidence interval (95%CI) 1.23-3.65] was related to the incidence of shoulder complaints. The incidence of neck complaints was increased for obesity (OR 1.81, 95% CI 1.07-3.05), work in awkward postures (OR 1.76, 95% CI 1.11-2.78), and poor or fair general health (OR 1.53, 95% CI 1.02-2.31). The recurrence of both shoulder and neck complaints was associated with chronic complaints at baseline (shoulder: OR 1.91, 95% 1.36-2.67; neck: OR 1.71, 95% 1.14-2.55) but not with work-related risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that there are differences in risk factors for the incidence and recurrence of shoulder and neck complaints.  相似文献

With the aim of obtaining a representative overview of the situation in German homes regarding dampness and mold growth and also analyzing the causes and factors affecting the development of these signs of dampness, a random sample of 5,530 homes was investigated. A questionnaire relating to behavior in the home and other aspects of the living environment was presented to the occupants. In addition, the prevalence of asthma and allergic diseases of the 12,132 inhabitants was surveyed. There were visible signs of dampness (including mold) in 1,213 (21.9%) of the examined dwellings and mold spots in 513 (9.3%) of them. The risk of dampness was significantly greater for increasing moisture emission indoors (OR=1.8; CI: 1.4–2.4), inadequate user-related airing (OR=1.7; CI: 1.2–2.3), presence of edges or corners of outside walls (OR=1.4; CI: 1.2–1.7), and for the socioeconomic criterion ?rented home.“ The existence of a userindependent exhaust ventilation system (OR=0.5; CI: 0.3–0.8) or of chimney ventilation (OR=0.7; CI: 0.6–0.9) and characteristics of modern state-of-the-art building such as sealed windows (OR=0.7; CI: 0.6–0.8) or thermal insulation (OR=0.9; CI: 0.7–1.0) as well as an increasing rooms-per-head index (OR=0.9; CI: 0.9–1.0) are significant protective factors. With regard to mold growth the critical factors are on the whole similar, with some differences: the importance of indoor moisture sources decreases (OR=1.3; CI: 0.9–1.9) while a pet in the home increases the risk of mold significantly (OR=1.4; CI: 1.2–1.8). Also, socioeconomic variables become more important (e.g.,?rented home“ OR=2.0; CI: 1.6–2.6). All types of moisture-related damage are significantly associated with the self-reported prevalence of respiratory and allergic diseases.  相似文献

A case-control study involving 406 incident cases and 2,434 controls was conducted in Iowa to examine the association between occupational exposures and renal cell carcinoma risk. After adjusting for major confounders, an increased risk was observed for men among mechanics and repairers (odds ratio [OR] 1.9, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.2-2.9); assemblers (OR 2.5, 95% CI = 0.8-7.6); automotive dealership and service station employees (OR 1.9, 95% CI = 0.9-3.9); wholesale traders of durable goods (OR 1.5, 95% CI = 0.7-3.2); farm product vendors (OR 4.4, 95% CI = 1.3-15.5); service organization managers (OR 2.2, 95% CI = 1.0-5.1); financial specialists (OR 2.7, 95% CI = 1.0-7.6); sales occupation supervisors (OR 1.8, 95% CI = 1.0-3.3); guards (OR 5.4, 95% CI = 1.4-20.7); and general farm workers (OR 1.9, 95% CI = 1.0-3.7). Among women, an increased risk was found for employees in depository institutions (OR 3.6, 95% CI = 1.1-11.3); colleges and universities (OR 7.6-95% CI = 2.3-25.6); and retail, including those in grocery stores (OR 2.2, 95% CI = 1.0-4.7). Our results indicate that occupational exposures may increase the risk of renal cell carcinoma.  相似文献

Objectives

This paper sought to assess organizational safety practices at three different levels of hierarchical workplace structure and to examine their association with injury outcomes among construction apprentices.

Methods

Using a cross-sectional sample of 1,775 construction apprentices, three measures of organizational safety practice were assessed: contractor-, steward-, and coworker-safety practice. Each safety practice measure was assessed using three similar questions (i.e., on-the-job safety commitment, following required or recommended safe work practices, and correcting unsafe work practices); the summed average of the responses ranged from 1 to 4, with a higher score indicating poorer safety practice. Outcome variables included the prevalence of four types of musculoskeletal pain (i.e., neck, shoulder, hand, and back pain) and injury-related absence.

Results

In adjusted analyses, contractor-safety practice was associated with both hand pain (OR: 1.27, 95 % CI: 1.04, 1.54) and back pain (OR: 1.40, 95 % CI: 1.17, 1.68); coworker-safety practice was related to back pain (OR: 1.42, 95 % CI: 1.18, 1.71) and injury-related absence (OR: 1.36, 95 % CI: 1.11, 1.67). In an analysis that included all three safety practice measures simultaneously, the association between coworker-safety practice and injury-related absence remained significant (OR: 1.68, 95 % CI: 1.20, 2.37), whereas all other associations became non-significant.

Conclusions

This study suggests that organizational safety practice, particularly coworker-safety practice, is associated with injury outcomes among construction apprentices.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To expand the knowledge about the occurrence of life events, and how they affect the risk of low back and neck/shoulder pain. DESIGN: A population-based case-control study. SETTING: Men and women 20-59-years old, living in and not working outside the municipality of Norrt?lje, Sweden, from November 1993 to November 1997. PARTICIPANTS: Cases (n = 1,148) were defined as all subjects from the study base who sought healthcare for a new episode of low back and/or neck/shoulder pain by any of the care givers in the municipality. Controls (n = 1,700) were selected as a stratified random sample from the study base, considering sex and age. Study subjects were interviewed about life events and critical life changes. Critical life changes were defined as events that brought about a marked psychosocial change. Odds ratios (ORs) associated with different numbers of life events or critical life changes were calculated. RESULTS: Having experienced at least two life events during the preceding 5 years was associated with an increased risk of neck/shoulder pain (OR = 1.6, 95% CI 1.1 to 2.4). At least two critical life changes were associated with an increased risk of neck/shoulder pain (OR = 1.9, 95% CI 1.3 to 2.7). In general, no associations were observed in relation to risk of low back pain. CONCLUSION: Life events and critical life changes are of importance for the risk of neck/shoulder pain of the kind that people are seeking care for. The study provides useful information for clinical practice and for future aetiological research on neck/shoulder pain.  相似文献

We investigated the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) and skin disease within a Japanese compact disk (CD) manufacturing plant. For this study, a stratified cross-section of workers completed self-reported questionnaires distributed over a 6-month time period. Low back pain (LBP) was the most commonly reported category (affecting 20.1%), followed by MSD of the shoulder (15.4%), neck (10.1%) and head (5.4%). Dermatitis was the most frequent skin disease (affecting 8.1%), followed by eczema (3.4%), acne (3.4%) and xerosis (2.7%). The odds of suffering neck MSD was 10.8 times higher among staff who sat in a chair all day (95% CI 1.8-112.8, P < 0.05). Standing all day was also a risk factor for this condition (OR 8.2, 95% CI 1.2-81.7, P < 0.05). Female gender increased the risk of shoulder MSD 4.3 fold (95% CI 1.4-13.7, P < 0.05), as did alcohol consumption (OR 3.3, 95% CI 1.1-11.9, P < 0.05). The odds of suffering any skin disease were significantly enhanced by working longer than 12 months in one's current job (OR 10.7, 95% CI 1.5-7.3, P < 0.05) and having a history of atopic disease (OR 7.2, 95% CI 2.6-21.4, P < 0.001). Overall, the staff within our study reported generally lower levels of MSD and skin disease than in previous investigations of other workplaces.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed at determining the prognostic factors related to the recurrence of low-back pain and future sickness absence due to low-back pain. METHODS: Data were used from a prospective cohort study in a working population with a 3-year follow-up period. They were collected with annual questionnaires. A generalized estimating equation model was used to study the relation between pain characteristics, individual characteristics, and work-related factors and the recurrence of low-back pain or sickness absence due to low-back pain in the following year. Adjustments were made for potential confounders. RESULTS: All the pain characteristics [odds ratios (OR) varying from 1.4 to 2.4], flexion and rotation of the upper part of the body [OR 1.6, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.1-2.5], low decision authority (OR 1.6, 95% CI 1.0-2.6), and low job satisfaction (OR 1.5, 95% CI 1.0-2.3), increased the risk of recurrent low-back pain. High disability due to low-back pain (OR 2.6, 95% CI 1.2-5.7), low co-worker support (OR 4.1, 95% CI 1.6-10.5), and low job satisfaction (OR 2.4, 95% CI 1.3-4.5) were predictors of sickness absence due to low-back pain. Lifting weights did not influence the risk of recurrences or sick leave. CONCLUSIONS: According to this study, high disability due to low-back pain is a prognostic factor for recurrent low-back pain and future sickness absence due to low-back pain. In addition, the following work-related factors predict a poor prognosis of low-back pain: flexion or rotation of the trunk, low job satisfaction, low decision authority, and low social support.  相似文献
